Fan Art Friday, Goliath Tour 2

It’s Friday and time for another FAF. This is the second of three FAFs dedicated to fan art given to me during the Goliath tour.

But the concluding tour-FAF will not be next week, because next week is CosPlay FAF! This is Halloween weekend, after all, so many of you will be dressing up. If your costumes are based on any of my books, please send them here! (Click the Contact button in the right panel, way down.)

And NOW . . . some fan art. My apologies that I don’t know/remember the names of the folks who handed these to me. Tour is a memory-melting experience.

These first three pieces were given to me in Kansas City, I think.

Yes, that appears to be a Twilight reference, plus there’s a bit of Full Metal Alchemist in there too.

Half Deryn, half Dylan! I’ve seen a few of these around the interwebs. Is it that you all want to see Deryn in a dress?

This was handed to me right before I went to the airport. THE AIRPORT, WHERE THEY LOVE IT WHEN YOU BRING IN STEAMPUNK GUNS. But it was made of plastic, so I’m not blogging from Gitmo.

This next one was done by the staff of the Wild Rumpus in St. Louis.

Wild Rumpus actually has a ferret named Ferdinand. And given Leviathan‘s hero’s father’s name, I demanded a bonding session with the beastie.

It turns out if you hold ferrets this way, they think you’re their mother and go to sleep. So Ferdinand is not dead, okay? Just resting. (Pining for the moors, maybe.)

This piece is from that very visit, and was one of those artsy kids who drew it while I talked, then gave it to me.

It’s very light here, but in person the lines were very beautiful and aerodynamic.

And finally, a bit of fanfic. Well, not fiction at all, really. More in the persuasive writing category. But you can see that this young wordsmith knows the value of repetition.

Okay, that’s it for this week. early next week I’ll give you guys a more formal tour report, with lots of numbers. It might be interesting. Or maybe not.

Don’t forget to send me your costume photos! And if you’re on FaceBook, you can also take a picture of yourself with one of my books and enter the Show Us Your Steampunk contest. Win the actual aviator caps and goggles from the cover photo shoot. Click here for details, or just to look at stuff.

  1. I can’t wait to see all the Westerfeldian halloween costumes. It makes me want to dress up as Deryn for Halloween.

  2. The ferret picture and the persuasive one nearly killed me from laughing so much……..
I wonder, would me going as a steampunk person count??

  3. Oh. My. God.
    I wants a Ferdinand!
I love ferrets, and that one is sosososososososo cute:):):)
Great fan art everyone! Can’t wait to see next weeks cosplay!

  4. Aw, that makes me miss my ferrets. What would be cool is a fabricated ferret. They could be put in the sequel. See, now there is a start for a sequel. WW2 and fabricated ferrets, and Alek and Deryn of course, Deryn in a dress.

  5. That is so barking awesome!! I love the gun; and the ferret~ X3
The others look wonderful as well! I’m impressed with the colors.

I was planning on doing steampunk this year for Halloween anyway, this contest just makes it all the more fun!! I can’t wait to see everyone’s entries~

  6. That one sketched is amazing. I would love to see it completed.

And you just made me want to get another ferret now. Like really badly, too bad I cannot have animals in my dorm. πŸ™

  7. Aww!! Ferret! They’re like socks with brains!!! πŸ˜€ I used to have one named Kitty. XD

….How many comments have the word ‘ferret’ in them? XD *counts*

  8. When i read that bit about the ferret I started at, “It turns out if you hold ferrets this way…” completely ignoring the previous paragraph and it sounded as if Franz Ferdinand wasn’t dead. But I do love the story you told about the ferret. But are you sure he isn’t dead?

Ferdinand is so cute in a rat-like sort of way. I like his name. I always thought Ferdinand was such a cool name. Which is why I shall continue to refer to Alek as Mr. Ferdinand even if he technically has no last name. Sorry Alek.

  9. I just walked around in My Red Riding Hood outfit (With steampunk heels…) for around 8-9 parties between two school parties. If I did a cosplay, I’d be Deryn in bed, trying to convince that doctor she doesn’t have a bomb strapped to her chest. XD I wouldn’t have to get out of bed in the morning! It’d be PERFECT!!! I have Shakespeare class tomorrow. At 10ish in the morning. Have to remember a Portia (Merchant of Venice) monologue by tomorrow. So basically, I’m going to be wishing I could do a cosplay while typing my monologue over and over again on my handy dandy iPad while trying to get to class. Why am I saying all this???

Good question. Don’t really know. πŸ˜€

ANYWAY, awesome art this week!!! Can’t wait to see the cosplays!!!

  10. YOU KILLED THE FERRET, SCOTT. STOP LYING TO US.

Kidding. But the fan art is great! But I see you forgot to check the ‘Yes’ box next to ‘Write a sequel to Goliath!’

  11. You did forget, right? You not planning to just leave us waiting for sequel that never comes?

For the sequel, we need to see Deryn in bloomers. Because you know she would.

  12. I wore my Barlow costume to a school dance. No one got it. It was bad. OH and I totally agree with Jacquie-la and Hannah-la about the Deryn ballgown thingie!

Oh and Ferdinand? He’s pinin’ for the fjords! (This is an EX-FERRET!) I love Monty Python… And for the Sequel thing, why u no check yes box?

  13. Does anyone else find it hilarious that Alek looks WAY more femine than Deryn in the first one? Im gonna ask my parents for a ferret now… I’m gonna name it Bovril and teach it how to say “MR. Sharp” πŸ™‚

  14. Barking Spiders! I’m going steampunk for halloween! I MUST ENTER THIS CONTEST. I MUST, FOR THE SAKE OF SCOTT-LA FANDOM.

  15. COOL! Leviathan sounds uber-interesting,but can you write a blog about the Uglies series? I just finished the series, and I’m feeling glum. I was just wondering….

IT WOULD BE SUPER DUPER UBER COOL AND AWESOME AND FANTASTIC AND BRILLIANT AND AMAZING AND SURPRISING AND HAPPY-MAKING AND BUBBLY-MAKING AND WONDERFUL AND MAGNIFICENT IF YOU COULD MAKE ANOTHER BOOK IN THAT SERIES?

ok…..calm down…… i know you are working hard on Leviathan right now, but please? it could be a break from Leviathan or something. Email me back with an answer!

P.S. I put my comment on your latest Leviathan post so you’d read my comment, so REPLY!!!!REPLYREPLYREPLYREPLYREPLY!

now I am starting to sound like the guy in your post.

    PLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZLPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZ TIMES 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000?

oh, and make sure thatif you are still making the uglies movie, WHICH YOU MUST< OR ELSE…………………

it can't be bogus, but has to be bubbly.

    Ok?……

    THANKS A MILLION! πŸ™‚ πŸ˜€ ;D

  16. oh, and also? please DO look at your 2009 uglies post about making a movie, and read the comment that is at the moment the 2nd last one. It’s name is Becca-wa,i think , and you

    WILL NOT MISS IT

because it is absolutely uber long, not just spaces like the one above, but filled with about 700 words. THANKS AGAIN!

  17. Oh, AND DO WRITE A MINI BOOK OR SOMETHING AFTER GOLIATH SO WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHARACTERS FROM MALONE OR RODGERS POV!!! πŸ˜€ like a news story. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. lol sorry for the all caps.

  18. Hmm, that’s funny, because if you hold me the right way I think you’re my Mother and subsequently fall asleep. I wonder if Bovril does that…

  19. I really do want to see Deryn in a dress. That’s was what I was looking for in Goliath.

I also do want a ferret! But… Me + small animals = small animals biting my fingers πŸ™ I guess i’ll just admire the ferrets for now then

  20. I’m not sure I would want to see Deryn in a dress. It just wouldn’t seem right. XP. Plus, I as much as a huge fan girl as I am about these books, and that’s sad, I’m almost 21 and still fan-girling over books, I don’t think I’d like to see a sequel to Goliath. I will resign myself to FanFiction, because just look at Star Wars or WoW and tell me that hasn’t gone past its peak and just keeps going. I’d hate to see that happen to the Leviathan trilogy.

Also, Neko-con this weekend, I will be debuting my Newkirk costume. >.< Stupid boy only has one picture, so work with me here! But I'm uber excited.

  21. I agree with the written fan letter. Continue with the series please. Alek and Deryn Zoological agents FTW!

  22. Mr. Westerfeld,
*the Wild Rumpus is actually in St. Paul
I was there! I was the one who asked you whether you are ever concerned about your stories getting really complicated πŸ™‚

  23. I think the reason many readers want a sequel is because we want to know what happens. There are a million different outcomes that could happen and we can interpret things in all sorts of ways. I want to see how Deryn’s now-known secret will affect everyone. Its not that I don’t like the ending of Goliath. I love it. I just want to know, what happens! It doesn’t have to be in the form of multiple books, just one. What happens to Deryn and Alek? Happy endings are hard to come by right?

  24. What you said about Ferdinand is pretty much what Monty Python said in their dead parrot sketch! HAHAHA…it totally made my day!! πŸ˜€

  25. Soooooo… About that sequel. The writer of that letter was right, WWII Darwinists and Clankers would be totally awesome. I’m seeing a daughter pulling a Deryn…

  26. *gasp! Ferdinand looks excaclty like my ferret Gus! When ever I hold him like that he yawns. Its kinda funny he has a big mouth.

  27. hehehe i’m wondering why that letter-writer signed it as “you’re number two fan” … who do they think is number one? hehehhe

    -Lizzy-wa OUT! ❓

  28. I love that letter thing and i have to agree:
Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please ,please please ,please, please, please please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please write a sequel to Goliath set in WWII when they are older!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
