I don’t have a book out this year, so I won’t be on any sort of tour. But I will be traveling around a bit and doing a few live appearances (mostly in Australia) so it makes sense to list everything in one place for easy linkage. And this is that place.
Here are all my known appearances in 2013. I will update this page as things change. Note that Justine will be at many of these things.
Conflux
Canberra, Australia
April 26-28
I’ll be doing a presentation about Leviathan and the history of illustrated novels on Friday (April 26) at 5:00PM, Event Room One. (And otherwise hanging out, so come say hi.) Conference site.
INTERNET DEAD ZONE
May 3-10
I am turning off my internet for this whole week. Get off my lawn!
Aurealis Awards
Sydney, Australia
May 18, 7PM
I’ll be hosting the ceremony for these yearly awards for Australian fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Hopefully I will be funny. Click here for details.
Sydney Writer’s Festival
Saturday, May 25, 11:30AM
I’ll be on a panel with Lauren Beukes, David M. Henley, and James Bradley. What is speculative fiction, and where do the boundaries start to blur between genres and sub-genres? Have the classic genres changed now that we live in a world where technology has caught up?
This is free and no bookings required. Event details.
Alpha Teen Workshop
Pittsburgh, PA
July 13-16
I’ll be teaching at this week-long writing seminar for teenagers. Admissions for the workshop are closed, but there will probably be a bookstore appearance in Pittsburgh. Check back here for details about that, or at the Alpha site.
San Diego Comic-Con
July 18-12
I’ll be hanging out here and getting into trouble. They might make me do a panel or two. Check back here for details, or at the con site.
Melbourne Writer’s Festival
August 22-30
I’ll be here and doing stuff. Details not set yet, but you can always check back here or on the festival site.
Brisbane Writers Festival
September 4-8
I’ll be here too! Details following. Festival site
All in all that’s a fair amount of travel, but nothing like when I go on tour. I’m kind of glad to be mostly hanging out at home and writing.
But next year i’m planning to have a book out, so who knows . . .
And I won’t be able to go to any of these things… but this ‘new book’ is VERY exciting!
My excitement for this new book is greater than….30 elephants (which is roughly equivalent to a blue whale). I do hope you come back to Vancouver! I still have books that must be signed! My Westerfeld section is just not complete! π as for all those events…I wish. I so wish. sadly, I’m stuck here where the rain is more reliable than the public transit.
Woah, did someone say new book? *starting camping out in bookstores*
But yea, I am very interested in this new book.
How I wish I lived in Australia or America so that I could attend those. TwT
But I live in Asia where nothing good happens.
So yea.
i don’t care if this new book doesn’t come out for another year i’m SO EXCITED!
tours… wah i can’t make it to any of them. i feel bad for you, carmensakura-la! wow so far away.
I need you to be in Texas *sniff, sniff* so far I have the Uglies and Pretties signed from friends who got the book and went to the signing for me. I plan to actually get the Specials signed in person :3
In case no one looks at the other thread again:
I think someone needs to start that idea. Not me, thoughβ¦ π
But if, in years to come, I come across a well-loved and thoroughly dog-earred copy of Leviathan, complete with several notes and such in a million different hand-writings, then Iβll know I inspired it. π
Also, @Zac-la: I’M HOMESCHOOLED, TOO! π
Okay, on to this thread: New book? I’m excited! Alpha…*sob*
Athena: Us Texans need to stick together through the disgusting humidity and Scott-less book signings, lol. π
Please please please do a bookstore visit in Pittsburgh!! I will be sure to drag multiple friends of mine along. We’re all HUGE fans of your books!!!
I really hope you end up doing a bookstore signing while in Pittsburgh. I have Leviathan and Behemoth signed. I’d love to make it a whole set with Goliath! π
New book=AWESOME. Can’t wait, Scott!
I wish I could go to something. I think the closest one to me is San Diego, maybe I can convince my uncle who lives there to invite me…
Or just convince Scott to come to Mexico…
@7, 8: There IS a bookstore signing during Alpha in Pittsburgh (or Greensburg, somewhere around there) at B&N. The Alpha guest authors read from their books, and Alpha students have a chance to read a flash piece if they so desire.
*sigh*
I’ve never wanted to go to Australia so badly….
The closest one to me is also San Diego, Middy Me! But I’m in California. Then again….Alpha….But that’s still across the country and will remain so for the next two and a half months. NEW BOOK. AHHH. Flutters of excitement.
@6: Aw, but what if we want you to participate too?
(There may be a problem if I did it, though, because I would bookmark/highlight the entire barking book. Well, not ALL of it, but a lot of it.) And, @10 (but still you Roxanne), why would you tell me that? I might just die no. Not because I want to read something, but the idea of going to a book signing for these amazing writers….It’s like when I really wanted ask Cassie Clare something when I was at her signing, but I was seized by a terror like I’ve never felt before….(Seriously, it was the most frightened I’ve ever been, while my friend kept telling me, “She’s just a person, [MiddyK].”) Yeah, exciting and thrilling but terrifying. Like turbulence! I love turbulence….
Also, Zacl-la, whenever you head on over here: I am SO jealous of that bill that just got passed for you lucky kiwis. America needs to grow up over here. But guess what tomorrow is? Day of Silence! Who’s wearing the duct tape with me? (Actually, this blog will say that it is tomorrow, but where I am it’s still the 18th. My beastie’s birthday!)
Please Mr.Westerfeld come to Portugal or even just to Europe! i know that you don’t have many fans here, but the ones that you have will be surly very excited if you came!
SCOTT!! Awhile ago (last year actually) you said there’d be some Uglies movie news or effects images released soon? Is that happening this month? This year? π Please answer!
@Roxanne (for some reason I had to spell your name like 5 times ahahah ‘rozanne’ ‘rozenne’) YUSS! Go us home-schoolers π do you like it? And have you been home-schooled your whole life like me? π
Some of you guys that got into Alpha should share you submission piece of writing!
I LOVE that idea of sending Leviathan around the world π someone should totally start that π
Leviathan as a play? Say what! Personally I would love to see Leviathan as a movie! Ahhhhh it would be a thing of beauty…
Also! Has anyone else read So Yesterday? I’m re-reading it again!
@Midshipman K I’m assuming you’re talking about the gay marriage bill? Do people hear about that in other countries?! Well since I don’t really agree with it I’m not one of the ‘lucky’ kiwis. I’m not homophobic (right word?) but I just don’t agree with the government redefining marriage. Anyway I’m not going to get all political on this blog π
@13: I do mean the gay marriage bill. π In the US we have that whole debate going on right now. I agree; it’s barking ridiculous that the government is in charge of affairs of the heart, but right now that’s what we’re stuck with. That’s also why I haven’t said a word all day (okay two slip-ups, but I actually held back even for Shakespeare). Today is Day of Silence and I have duct-taped my mouth shut to mirror the silence inflicted upon the voiceless LGBT community. (Obviously, I feel very strongly about this, but, like you, I don’t want to get all political here.) π
@Middy Miles, whenever you show up XD: Have you joined the email group yet? (Sorry, I don’t know how else to ask….)
hey everyone i miss you all! barking homework.
@6 what’s this thing with a copy of Leviathan and notes and all that? sounds cool correct me if i’m wrong but it sounds like a fan-shared copy?
@13 is it fun to be home schooled i always wanted to try that but no one in my family wanted to commit to that. also Leviathan as a play, movie, etc… it just needs to be a performance! let’s all hold a kickstarter or something!
oh and April 22nd is Earth Day everyone go green! it’s also the internet “blackout” day in protest of CISPA, for those of us in the U.S.
@13: Yes, I have been homeschooled by entire life. I actually kind of wish I went to high school for all the social stuff, but mostly I’m happy with homeschooling. And yeah, I can get it done in just a couple hours, too. π
@16: To quote myself: “This is a totally random idea, but how cool would it be to have a book that got passed around from stranger to stranger? Like, someone would buy a fantastic read, write something in it like their name or a comment, or highlight their favorite passage, and then pass it on to someone else, whether it be a friend or a complete stranger. Youβd have this internationally-traveled book, with so much history attachedβ¦
So obviously this book should Leviathan. π ”
And back to schooling: It’s pretty fun. It’s not about grades, it’s about actually learning the material. I dunno about Zac-la, but I pretty much teach myself at this point. You just read from the textbook, do the problems, and ask your parents for help if need be. Simple.
@13 i’ve read so yesterday…but i barely understood it
@17: Homeschooling sounds like a dream come true….I would just do the work in a few hours then actually write or something. But alas, school and busy work. I know someone who just started homeschooling, though. She’s a junior in high school. I know a lot of people who switched over, too.
It seems like a lot of people say they’ve wanted to be home-schooled! I really like it because I’m very unsocial… haha!
But yeah there isn’t any distractions or anything I guess…
I’m part of a corespondance school though so I have a teacher for each subject that I can call or email whenever.
@18 That’s what it was like when I read So Yesterday the first time! But re-reading it has been awesome! Such a great book π Midshipman, Middy, Roxanne, please tell me you’ve read it?!
I can’t wait to see you in Brisbane!!! Will be looking forward to it, and this new book sounds great!
@20: I SO want to be homeschooled right now. I would have time! I wouldn’t have to deal with my annoying Algebra II teacher for Read period and third period! And soon to be STAR testing for which you spend like all day in your third period classroom….grrr….
I, um, have not, er, read So Yesterday….yet. hehe π
By the way, Chaos Walking people: You do know “Early One Morning” is a real song, right? I just discovered that and now I bought it on iTunes and am listening to it on repeat….ahhh….
@20- yes, I have read So Yesterday, though I had to reread it and all through the second time I was like “oohh, so that’s what it was…”. But I really love it. I think it’s the book I’ve lent to most people, even my friend’s dad read it, and he said he liked it.
@22- wow, it is real?? I didn’t know but now I absolutely need to listen to it.
BTW, I just read they’re gonna make the book into a movie, and a director is already chosen. I don’t remember his name, but I think he directed one film called “Being John Malkovitch” (sorry if I spelled that wrong).
And Maze Runner is also going to be a film! Man, we really need a Leviathan movie or something to put some Westerfeld in there.
@23: WHOA, really? A movie? I’m trying to imagine the Noise….
And for The Maze Runner too? Huh. I thought that was just a mediocre book. Oh well. Yes, we definitely need a Leviathan SOMETHING. Preferably a movie but I will never give up my silly les Mis-scale musical fantasies. ^^ lol
Heeeeeerreee. Go liiiisteeeeen: (There are many versions of this song, btw. Many versions.) :

Hope that works. π
I’ll be attending the Brisbane Writers Festival! I will look for you there!
