Announcements!

Two of them:

I woke up this morning (Saturday in Sydney) to an email from my S&S publicist telling me to immediately call a reporter for the NY Times. They wanted to interview me for an essay about cosmetic surgery, pegged to the recent face transplant in France. Apparently thanks to Uglies, I am the man to call when someone’s face gets eaten by a dog.

But luckily for my breakfast, the piece was about cosmetic surgery in the future. The questions were smart, and despite the fact that I hadn’t had any coffee yet, I think I said some intelligent stuff. I’ll let you know when (and if, always if) the article appears.

Announcement 2:

The book that has been optioned is So Yesterday! I can’t tell you the producers yet, but one of you has got it right! Which Justine and I didn’t think would happen, because it’s kind of out of left field.

But let’s say for now that I have met with them and am thrilled with their ideas. I’ll be able to reveal all before the end of the year, or so my agent says.

Let the serious casting begin! Here are the parts:

Hunter Bracque: a 17-yo trend-spotter with an ambiguous relationship to “cool.”
Jen James: his innovator love interest. A cross between Kim Possible and . . . well, pretty much just Kim Possible.
Mandy Jenkins: Hunter’s smart alecky boss at a certain athletic shoe company. I get dibs on Sarah Silverman.
Lexa Legault: Technogeek and visual effects artist.
Tina Catalina: Hello Kitty geek supreme.
Antoine: Bronx God of athletic shoes.
Hiro Wakata: Lord of All Things With Wheels: bikes, inlines, skateboards, etc.
Hillary Winston-Smith: escapee from Gossip Girl world.
Mwadi Wickersham: anarchist of cool, and the Missing Black Woman not in all those Nike ads.
Futura Garamond: ace designer and anarchist sidekick. Dresses like a “gay body-builder doing an ironic take on NASCAR fandom.”
Hunter’s Mom and Dad: perfume designer and epidemiologist, respectively. Hmm.

Those of you who haven’t read the book, feel free to bone up with the recently released paperback edition.

  1. Well, I can’t tell you about the producers yet, so that prize remains a secret. Obviously, the casting hasn’t been done at all yet, so only the future will tell if anyone got that part right.

But I will say that Fiona wins something from my author shelf for her excellent analysis of why it had to be So Yesterday. See the third comment on the first contest post:

Glad you’re happy, Forcher. I am too.

  2. WOOHOO!!!! how long do u think itll take until the movie comes out?! cuz trust me u will definately get my cash (and my friends’ ofcourse since ill be dragging them along) from ur movie profit:P

  3. Can I be in it? 🙂 Hahaha, nah…I’d probably somehow funk up the movie….can I? 😀

Oh yeah, whatever you do, do NOT pick Frankie Munez, Hillary Duff or Lindsey Lohan for ANYthing…ew. Unless they’re getting run over by a truck but I don’t recall that happening in So Yesterday…or did it? Dang I’ll have to re-read it.

  4. Cool! I guess I’d better read the book now. 🙂 From what you’re saying, it sounds like the option deal is pretty solid, so fingers crossed it gets to production stage.

Despite all good reasons to the contrary, I was kind of hoping it’d be the Risen Empire, only because I’m reading it now (nearly finished book 2) and really enjoying it.

  5. Congratulations! That’s bound to be a cool film. Will try and think of good choices for the parts, but for now I’ll just say Emily Browning Emily Browning.

  6. i havent read So Yesterday yet, so i dont noe wat the characters have to be like but mite i once again suggest..Sarah M Gellar?

  7. frankie muniz isn’t THAT bad…i think he’s funny. It is strange he still reminds me of an adolescent 12 year old when he’s what…20? 19? 18? right now?

  8. Shia LeBoeuf for Hunter! *jumps up and down* That would be awesome! I love that kid.

And your choice for Mandy = perfect.

    YAY So Yesterday!

  9. ohh i def need to read so yesterday…i’ve read peeps, uglies, and i am almost done w/ pretties! i love all of them and you are an awsome writer ur my favorite author besides stephenie meyer:) keep up the good work

  10. i am sooooo excited for “so yesterday” the movie now. that was the first book i read of yours and i loved it i’m reading peeps right now and i’ve already read uglies and pretties i can’t wait for specials. i hope that those books get made into movies too. that would be neat. i really loved so yesterday it would be cool to be in one of those movies b/c i love the books so much. anyways i’m very excited for that and i will definatly take all my friends to see it!!!!

  11. In addition to Jonathan Ahdout I’d like Famke Janssen for Hunter’s mom and Robert Downey Jr. for his dad. They are both cool, smart and pleasant to look at, Jonathan Ahdout could be their son and I think Johnny Depp might be a tad too expensive these days. But by all means get Depp if you can.

I’m enjoying this casting lark! But I’m going to stop here, since I’m really bad at hip young actors, and yesterday I realised with a shock that Ahdout could perfectly well be my own kid, agewise. Eep!

  12. WOW! U DON’T KNOW HOW HAPPY I AM THAT YOU CHOSE SO YESTERDAY! THAT IS MY FAV. BOOK OF YOURS! THAT WAS THE FUNNIEST BOOK EVA! CAN U CAST ME IN IT? I DON’T CARE WHO I AM, AS LONG AS IM IN THE MOVIE!!! WOO HOO!!! THAT’S SO GREAT, SCOTT! WOW! I THINK IM GOING TO HAVE A CELEBRATION IN HONOR OF YOUR BOOK–DON’T WORRY, WE’LL BRING DOUGHNUTS! HAHA! LOL. I WANT TO BE A PART OF THE COOL PYRAMID! I WANT TO BE A PART OF THE HUNT FOR MANDY AND SEE THE PAKA PAKA AND GO TO DA PEER GROUP FOR SHOES AND THE FANCY HOI ARISTOI PARTY WITH THE POO SHAM!!!

    YOU FIDDLE LUCKER!

  13. Hey, congrats! Of course, I did what any self-respecting fan who hasn’t read So Yesterday yet would have done and ran out and bought it yesterday and am nearly finished! I’m loving the book, so I can’t wait for the movie (and my Socoiology teacher thanks you for giving me discussion topics that keep the class from becoming a lecture class instead of a discussion class like he likes it…)

  14. I have only just discovered Scott Westerfeld coz I’ve read Uglies and loved it SO much!!! I use to be a Harry Potter nut but Uglies has totally changed my perspective on novels and I can’t wait to read Pretties or any other Scott Westerfeld book. On the note of this movie you’re talking about I haven’t read the book so of course I wouldn’t know what it’s about but I say cast me or at least give me a shot when Uglies goes into production!! Cheers.

  15. Everyone else here is saying a lot of things, but I’m just going to stick with “yay” and “that’s very cool.” My comments are so short. Wow.

  16. I have a question does anyone know how to tie the shoelaces like Jen does in the book? I really want to tie my laces like her cause it sounds soooo cool!!!(scott could you tell us how to tie the laces like jen Please!)

  17. Ok, so this is a comment comming a bit late, ok, way late, but can I just say, OMG? Good. OMG OMG OMG! xD This is so awesome. Can’t wait to see it. By the way, Sarah Silverman would be more than perfect for Mandy’s role. She even looks like I pictured Mandy. I’m only two thirds through So Yesterday though.

And since this is my first comment, time for book-worship! I’ve ready Uglies and Pretties, and I can’t wait for Specials. It’s quite sad, how close our world is to becoming theirs, it scares me, but hopefuly we’ve got a bunch of Zees and Tallys to fight through. Then, as I said, I’m reading So Yesterday. I bought it for a friend (who has also read Uglies and Pretties), then ninja-ed it back from him when he’d finished. So far, so awesome. I’d been pondering a lot how cool became cool before I read the book, and it’s really interesting to see someone’s perspective on it. Much thanks to you for writing them all!

Alright, I’m getting long here, so, once more, congrats on the movie, and I will definately see it!

  18. Mandy–I actually do know how to tie the laces. It’s a tad complicated to explain. Basically, you start by threading the lace through the middle loop on the outside edge of your sneaker, then cross to the bottom loop on the inside edge, then back to the middle loop on the outside, then cross to the second from bottom loop on the inside, then back to the middle loop on the outside, and so forth. You need a LONG and relatively skinny lace, preferably in a bright neon color, for best results.

But of course, if you do it now, you’ll be at best an Early Adopter. Worst case scenario, you could be considered a Laggard…. 🙂

  19. I just finished So Yesterday. I was hoping for the Uglies Trilogy to become a movie but oh well. I DON’T want to see anyone (actors/ actresses) that have become really popular right now in the movie. ESPEICALLY (sp) Hillary Duff, Frankie Muniz…ect…
