The Big News

I’m still at ALA, and let me tell you that librarians rawk! We’re having a great time and meeting lots of excellent people. More about them later.

Because, of course, while I’m here away from computer and internet connections, The Big News has finally appeared!

From this week’s Variety:

As they prepare “Eragon” for a Dec. 15 release, 20th Century Fox and producer John Davis have bought into another young adult fantasy book series with “Uglies,” the Scott Westerfeld novel that hatches a trilogy.

Davis will produce with his wife, Jordan. Futuristic tale taps into teen angst over conformity and acceptance. Kids are called “Uglies” until they reach 16 and get surgically transformed into the attractive “Pretties,” who move to the glamorous part of town. A precocious teen is threatened with being denied the procedure unless she spies on a pal who skipped the operation and joined a rebellious group. Studio has bought the three-book series for a potential franchise. The second novel, “Pretties,” is near the top of the young adult bestseller lists; the IPG-repped Westerfeld’s third installment, “Specials,” was also released this year.

The producers were plugged into the tale by their daughter, who read the book in school. Studio has begun the search for a scribe to adapt.

Okay, actually, that’s only part of The Big News . . . more later, when I get back to my own computer!

Cool how the producers were clued into the books by their daughter. See? Word of mouth works!

Update: My agent has hard copy of the issue of Variety in hand, and it turns out the article was on page one. This is ego-boosting if nothing else.

  5. Wow I can’t wait for more news on this. If that’s only part of the big news I can’t imagine what else might be happening. When I first read Uglies I made all my friends read it and we all agreed it should be made into a movie or show or something. It’s so exciting!!!

  8. Congrats, Scott! That’s pretty amazing. Though movies are never as good as books and seem to change stuff. It would be awesome if you got to work on it and make all the big decisions. *nods* Yep, I trust you to make it good, not all those people in the business who could screw it up. =P

  9. Congrats! You seem to be getting a lot of offers from the media. So Yesterday the Movie, Midnighters TV (by the way whats going on with that?) and now this. All thats left is a peeps movie and You’ll have it all 😀

  11. Cool. My favourite will always be the midnighters, but I like Uglies too. Yeah, I heard they’re making a movie of Eragon. I just finished reading the sequel to Eragon, so that’s kind of interesting. Can’t wait to see that and Uglies. Hope they do a good job. And yeah, anything happen with midnighters TV show?

  13. Holy yay! Way happy-making news. Looks like I’ll be busy this next year, force-feeding my friends the Uglies trilogy (though of course, I’ll only force-feed the first book. After that, they hound me for the others). Chances are, we’ll have a huge group of people going on opening night.

    I’ll be the one with crash bracelets.

    And yay to the existence of MORE big news.

  16. I really hope that they dont use big stars for parts of the Uglies. They should be very normal looking. It shouldn’t be any primped and polished hollywood girls/guys.

    Movie! Uglies! Yay!
    In my opinion, the best thing about this is that it will probably give you a much bigger fan base. And maybe people won’t go “huh?” when I mention your name.

    Then, people at my school would read the books, then read the other books by Scott, and then they must read more and more books by various authors! I’ll turn my entire school into biblophiles! Mu-wha-haha!

  33. This is pretty wonderful news.
    But I must admit I’m very nervous; so far, the only bookthatIlove-turned-movie done successfully is the Harry Potter novels. Take Ella Enchanted, for example: that was my favorite book a while back, and the movie?
    Well.
    Let’s just remind everyone that they put song and dance routines in it.
    So here’s to hoping they won’t make a mess of your fabulous work.

  41. Congratulations! Older reader here (24) that basically *inhaled* the trilogy over a week or so and just finished _Specials_. I love these books and have been raving about ’em to my friends. Thank you so much for writing them. My only regret is not having had them around when I was a kid.

    I’m curious and looking forward to seeing how a director will choose to show uglies and pretties visually; I also wonder who they’ll get to direct.

    Anyway, congratulations again on this news. And thanks again for creating such a great trilogy.

    I was actually thinking about how it would be very odd to cast these if they were made into a movie because you need one person for ugly tally then another perosn for pretty/special tally .. plus you need tons of great looking people just for extras .. but they aren’t in short supply in hollywood I guess

    Oh noo but what if it sucks, like so many movies-based-on-books do?? NO THAT WOULD BE HORRIBLE. Uggh but I know I’d *love* it anyway. Hey you know I was actually thinking about an Uglies movie a few weeks ago…and like who could play who, if it was with actors… I actually thought that Nicole Kidman would be good as Dr. Cable, because she’s exactly how I picture Dr. C. Well, I pictured her being like mid-30s young, that is, until Specials and she was like much older than that. But I mean, she’s tall, has perfect skin, and her bone structure is both beautiful and also a little severe. I dunno, just thinking out loud. OHH THIS IS SO EXCITING THOUGH. Let us fans know of any castings, please, if you find out about stuff like that. I’d certainly be interested in trying out for a role in the movie version of my FAVORITE BOOK EVER. Ok well now that I’ve finished boring you, I just wanted to say that I LOVE YOU MISTER WESTERFELD aanndd g’night XD

    K- I agree with you on your Nicole Kidman idea…that, or one of the ladies from Desperate Housewives. They all look sort of…icy. 🙂

  56. Wow that is really cool. I am really excited, acually i think they sould do open casting call. They really need a few new faces. The Only thing with amber Tamblyn is shes like 22 i think. I really think of Tally as a 15 year old because she is. I just think open castings a good idea becase there really arent many 15year old ish actresses who could pull that off. I dont really think any of them could fit. Anyway congrats Scott, i am still trying to get of hold of specials from my libaray but i am very excited to get a hold of it.

    I have noticed Scott, ends his books all kind of the same ish. Although they all rock!!!

  58. PLEASE RREAD THIS!!!!!
    i think that you should cast fresh faces. I think it will prevent the movie from becoming too hollywood and plus the actors will stay true to their character and not just think of it as just a gig or just some sort of moneymaker.
    Also as a true fan, I think only one tally should be used throughout the 3 movies. You want the viewers and the fans to create this connection with Tally. You might just lose it if you have more than one Tally. For an example, if they used a different actor to play Harry for the harry potter movies than the viewers would be upset and there wouldn’t be a connection between the actors and the fans.There are always computers that you can use to make tally look different throughout the movies.
    Make sure that you take part duringthe production of the movie!

    Just finished “Pretties” (iknow, I”m behind, but I haven’t been reading any spoilers) and I figured I ought to check to see if they were going to be films.
    It seems that every book I read nowadays is being turned into a movie!
    Not that that’s bad.

    I think this would be a great one to see on the big screen, and I’m SUPER-JEALOUS of the actors (hoverboards! I mean really. And I thought using pyro in community theatre was cool!)

    Anyway, can’t wait. Congratulations! And I’ll get Specials read before I come on again, lest it be spoiled.

    PS-I agree, “Uglies: the Musical” would kind of ruin the story.

    i know you said that ‘in a world of extreme beauty, anyone normal is ugly’, but wouldnt it be kind of hard to make so many people drop dead gorgeous? so you’d kind of have to make everyone else look ugly even though that ruins the message you sent out to readers when you wrote this book

  82. my favorot books are the uglies trillogie, and i would love to see it all on screen, though i know for sure that the books are like 50 times better than any movie will be. but it would still be awesome to see the whole book on screen. but if they do make a movie, it should be three, one for each book. cant wait!!!!

    I think they should cast unheard of actors as to not make it too, well, hollywoody. I don’t think I could even think of a well known actress who I’d like to see as tally. If you’re having open casting for smaller roles, let me know.

  93. I was thinking throughout the entire series what a good trilogy it would make – I couldn’t put any of the books down. But anyway, I hope someone real is cast as Tally, because I really connected with her and it would be great if the audiences could do that too. Amber Tamblyn is too commercially pretty, I think.     My friend came up to me today and said “I have something that will make your day. THE UGLY TRILOGY IS GOING TO BE A MOVIE!!!” Yeah, we pretty much screamed our heads off. I found Uglies at a school book fair once and thought the cover was interesting, and the first line got me hooked with it’s reference to cat vomit! I ended up getting about twelve of my friends hooked, who in turn got their friend’s hooked. There was a literal Ugly epidemic at my school (:

    I hope the actors fit the characters!
    You can bet I’ll be one of the first to the movie theatre!

I loved Uglies Pretties and Specials those were the best books ever and i would really want to be the first in line to see the movie i got all of my friends hooked on your books and they loved them although Specials was a little sad. No joke, and if they mess it all up and change it I will hunt them down and kill them all!!!!!!! Also, I hope they pick good actors and actresses. People who get the charcters and portray them right! I also hope to god that they dont get anyone very famous for any of the roles AT ALL! Except maybe Dr. Cable just because I can think of a bunch of old actresses that could do her really well I think.

    i got done with the trilogy a couple weeks ago. i was thinking it should be made into a movie halfway through Uglies. tho i’ve heard books made into movies sometimes suck, i’m extremely excited about this.

  116. im a big FALL OUT BOY fan and i just finished reading PRETTIES and there’s this song called OF ALL THE GIN JOINTS IN THE WORLD!!!! by fall out boy and it goes perfectly with the part were Zane gets the headaches.

  121. I teach 7th grade and read Uglies as a read-aloud to my class. They insisted I read Pretties and Specials. We will finish Specials this week. One of my students told me yesterday that he had heard it was going to be a movie. We can’t wait to see Uglies on the big screen.

Plus, I think there are many scenes in which they could totally screw up. Like the roller-coaster scene, the Rusties. My sister and I are both sort of…eh about this. But if they do it right I’m all for it.

  124. OMG!! I can’t wait for it. Once I found out about it I was wondering if Fox was going to have a casting call because I would definatly go. Even if I could just see the process that would be enough for me….I mean if I could audition that would be even better. One question: what are the characters ethnicity because if the book is placed in the future wouldn’t they be tan because the races would have mixed into one unicolor right? This whole thing is totally bubbly-making right.

  128. WOW, that’s amazing. I was reading Specials last night and I was thinking, “This series would make GREAT movies!” and I saw this and I almost screamed. Haha! Congratulations!

    As for the casting calls, I do hope they’re *open* casting calls…I noticed, when I read Uglies, that I look uncannily like Ugly!Shay’s described. O_o That and I sort of act like her…or at least like her as an Ugly, hehe.
    Of course, I’m sure every Uglies trilogy fan wants to do casting calls, I mean come on…Hoverboards, purifiers, sneak suits, the Rusty Ruins…Geniuusssss!

  129. wow i always did think the book was darn to become a movie. don’t mean to sound negative but i hope it comes out great and not some movie that can’t compare w/the book. like when i read the series of unfortunate events i thought those books were the best. but the movie changed the story a lot. and it kinda killed the whole story. i would have rather perferred no movie and leaving the characters to my imagenation so the story stayed the same way i imagen it. oh well thats just me there. but no matter what i guess to me the story will stay the same. well good luck w/your movie. best wishes.

  137. I am so happy about this. I would absoloutely adore ahving the chance to audition. That would make me so sad not to have the chance =( I hope the auditions are open to the public because then the producers can choose out of more people and find the perfect person!! This is amazing. I already emailed Scott and I asked him about whether there are going to be auditons still and for the public.. I just finished the 4rth book in the “triogy” (lol yea) and I loved it!

    Is the Uglies trilogy movie gonna have open auditions for the part of Tally? Like auditions for people without agents? Thanks soooo much you guys ar awesome! =) Also, links would be great.. Is there an age thing like only 14 years old or whatever? I’m not 14 but still lol.

  140. Speaking of word of mouth, a friend I met through neopets told me about the series..and so I read them, loved them more than Harry Potter..which I’m completely obsessed with, and then got so far, four people in my class reading them.

    I cannot WAIT for the auditions, but I can’t seem to find ANY info about it. =[
    sad-making.
    But..I’m soo determined to try out, I would LOVVEEEE to be in those movies.

  141. I’m actually upset. These books are about much more than the plot and the little love story- its about the deeper meaning and the warning against our society. As if there aren’t already enough thirteen year old girls that go ‘omg weee yayy!!!1’ about these books, can you imagine what it would be like after a movie that probably won’t even be nearly as good as the books? I think the books were meant to let you put in your own views of pretty and ugly- but now, actors are going to be doing that for us.

  148. Yes everybody seems to want to try out… i honestly don’t want to play tally because its gonna be a hard role and all that stuff.

    I would love to play Tally(as I’m sure millions of ppl would, but i’m still hoping something will let me and those at least try out.)

    I’ve been, looking but haven’t found anything.

    This movie is going to be great. The books are wonderful and have many deep meanings in them.
