News flash! There is currently no contest going on! There is no rush to comment!

Here’s why: I have a short story to write this week. Justine and I are both contributing to an anthology of five short stories called Love is Hell. It’s a sequel to Prom Nights from Hell, which featured Meg Cabot, Lauren Myracle, Michelle Jaffe, Kim Harrison, and Stephenie Meyer.

I’m not sure who’s in this one besides us yet—watch this space for news. But the stories are due soon. (And, um, mine’s going a little slowly.)

So I’m not going to post for a week or so. And when I do come back it will be with a calmer way to distribute samplers. So don’t kill yourself obsessively refreshing.

But how will you entertain yourselves? Well, for one thing you can go check out the Inside a Dog blog, where Justine and I will still be posting. It’s been really fun so far, with lots of writing questions asked and answered.

Of course, here you can while away the time doing something like . . . reading and discussing the first chapter of Extras:

    I’m sitting here with my buddy and we’re feeling retarted because when we hit refresh and saw that there was a new post, we jumped out of our seats and flailed our arms. We even took all of the library’s books by Scott and had them conveniently sitting to our left… and then no contest.

    Come on. We even denied food for this!

  13. thanks for the first chapter. i still dont know the deal with moggle. is it a hovercam that is illegal (like it said uptop) but why does she have one? and why is it still called new pretty town. and it said that uglies werent allowed there, at night. does that mean that she can go there durring the day? and japan seperates uglies from pretties just like america. but with the cure, wouldnt it be more like deigo. and is there a river seperating new pretty town from uglyville, like there was in tally’s town? and if tally is back in this novel, how did she get to japan? these are the questions that haunt me.

  14. Oooh. Now I can’t wait. There’s some things in this chapter that either nobody gets or I’m just forgetting from the other three books (face rank?). And I think I have a guess as to what an Extra is now, althought it’s probably wrong. Aya seems awesomely tricky. Thanks Scott!

  19. ahhh….. no contest 🙁 . I could of even been firsat if i didnt read the first part of the post.

    As for the first chapter, could that not have made any less sense? What is an Extra exactlly? What happened to New Prettytown? What is up with Uglys getting surges? Not that’d I expect you to answer these questions. It’d ruin the book.

    I am now offically sinced for Love is Hell! I only read part of Prom Nights from Hell though 🙁 . More inspiration to do so now, I guess. *says under breath:I cant believe your ditching us for a week*

And all of the unanswered questions in the first chapter just make me even more excited because I know they are all going to be explained in the book and it’s going to be another awesome adventure!!!   31. Well I’ll just tell you which couple I like better I guess…

    I like Tally and David better because even though Zane is totally sweet and can become bubbly on his own (and not to mention he died trying to help the entire Pretty population by eating one of the pills), David has always been the guy I favored because he was Tally’s first love. He opened her eyes to the problem that faced their furturistic world, and he was always there to comfort and help Tally. And even after Tally had the operation and left him for Zane, he still tried to win her over because he loved her so much. I was completely happy that Tally and David ended up together at the end of Specials (even if it wasn’t a boyfriend/girlfriend thing) because I just love that couple!

  33. I liked David and Tally better too. To me it seemed like Zane was using Tally to find out about new smoke in the beginning of pretties. But thats just me.

  38. thanks for posting the first chapter. i really liked how your writting showed obvious aspects of japan, yet it wasnt too much detail, which is a mistake most writers make. cant wait for the whole thing!

  39. Yeah I want to find out what face count is too. And I noticed a lot of differences like she had a brother and knew who he was (which never happened in uglies as far as i can remember) and her parents were crumblies but maybe that’s just because they were older than usual when they had her but in Uglies the kids never really had relations with their parents and Tally was 16 and her parents were still adult pretties. So basically I can’t wait to see what else has changed in the world after Tally’s little revolution (or should i say big).

  40. Oh yeah and I also can’t wait to find out what an extra is? Is it different than an ugly? Probably, or else she would’ve called herself an ugly. And we already know they are definitely different than Pretties, but they are the same age as uglies. And how exactly does somebody become “pretty” if the operation was terminated? Maybe they just move to New Pretty town once they are 16 and are allowed to get surges without parental permission. Anyone have any predictions about the book? Like how Tally is going to come back or about any of the stuff I said above? (sorry for the long posts guys I don’t really have much to do today…and I LOVE westerblog)

  43. Tally and Zane, without a doubt. I just like Zane so much more. He really seems to care about anti-bubbleheadedness, and David grew up knowing about the lesions. Who knows what his reaction would have been if he had been raised in the city?

  45. I definately cannot wait for Extras now. Before, I thought maybe, just maybe, I could hold out. But no, there’s absolutely no way I can wait now. This is going to be tough.

  46. Dude… I am literally CRYING… And I don’t cry easily AT ALL. THAT’S how much I have been looking forward to this!! I swear, as soon as I have Extras in my hands, I’m gonna have a nervous break-down!!

    I love so incredibly much how you create your own lingo, and borrow from the current one as well!! “Moggle-chan” made me screech in excitement, as did “manga-head” because I would probably be a manga-head if I lived there. XD

    This is SO FREAKING AWESOME AND I SERIOUSLY CAN’T WAIT FOR THE BOOK TO COME OUT!!!!!!!!!!! *cries*

WOW, very interesting first chapter. at first i thought, “am i the only one who thinks this chapter doesn’t make a lot of sense, or is it that i missed a bunch of details in the other three books?” i tihnk that might of been confusing, but besides that, WONEFUL first chapter scott, and i can’t wait until EXTRAS comes out. :]] it’s going to be SICKK.

OMG i just read the first chapter of EXTRAS and now i want to read the reast no fair i want to know what happends next now i have to wait for the book to come out or scott can put up the next to chapters PPPPPLLLLEEEAASSS with a chary on the top oh and i’m sorry for the missed speald words i’m just so excited.   49. hmm. i want to read Prom Nights From Hell, but i can’t find it ANYWHERE, however, I love all of the Authors that did that, and I love Scott and Justine, so I’m sure both PNFM and LIH will be wonderful.
    also, thanks for the first chapter! its wonderful! kind of short, but i absolutely cannot wait until october!

  52. this post makes me so0o0o0o0o want to read extras. i think extras is a new word for uglies since nobody is really pretty any more. i think that most people get crazy surg. when they turn 16, some people look like a normal pretty, and some people kept their faces. i guess that people can get a little bit of surg. when they are 15 because the cure lets EVERYBODY have an ugly mind, so the athorities are like, “what the heck.” a lot of authors explain everything in the first chapter. the way scott only gives a little bit of info is awesome. it makes you want to know more.

  60. well i’ve only read the Uglies trilogy…but they are my favorite books ever.

    oh and the extras thing could be like a loser. because on page 7 it says:

    “Not if they were extras. Losers. Unknowns.”

    so i kind of think that some uglies could be kind of like more noticed than others and Aya is just not very popular. i don’t know. it’s confusing. can’t wait to read it though and find out the answers to all these questions.

  69. one of the authors in prom nights from hell is Stephenie Meyer. my friend read a book written by her called twilight. she gave me a copy for my birthday, and i havent read it yet. if someone on the blog has read that book, is it good? my friend thinks so, but i need more than one input.

    idk exactly why, its just that zane and her seem to have more of an actual relationship where her and david had barely started theirs and also zane just seemed to fit better with her personality ya know more of a rebel plus he was with and trying to help her fight the bubbleheadness and after everything he still would do anything to be with her idk i just much perfer them together

    ive read the uglies and midnighters series
    out of the uglies my favorite book was pretties hands down
    and out of the midnightners its a close fight between touching darkness and blue noon but my favorite is blue noon
    but between blue noon and pretties i can’t choose

    If David and Tally don’t do anything this book, I’m going to be extremely mad.

    Is this book even supposed to be about David and Tally? Because Specails ened, kind of leaving you wanting more.

    So, Extras should be more and I hope Tally and David are in it.

  79. Scott? umm, i love ur uglies series, (in the simplest way i can say that) and i wanted you to know that…

    so, aya is not allowed to be in NPT? this is like what Tally did in the very first chapter of the series. i’m really interested to find out the meeting of aya with david and tally. i love the thought of them being together!!!

  81. My favorite book by Scott is a tie between Uglies/Pretties/Specials and Peeps.

    My favorite series would have to be Uglies/Pretties/Specials because it’s the only series I’ve read. I have yet to read Last Days and I’m totally excited because my friend is going to lend it to me!!!

    Oh btw Scott one of my favorite part of Peeps was how every other chapter was about a different parasite. It may have been extremely disgusting at times but it sort of helped put you in the mood for the next chapter and the rest of the book. I found it was a good reminder of what the book was really about. LUVED IT!

  82. OMG I totally agree!!! When I finished Specials I literally jumped up and shouted “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!” and almost started crying because it was all over. So that’s why when I heard the news about Extras I almost had a heart attack (not literally…)!!! And I can’t wait for Tally and David to come back! I hope they are a pretty big part of the book. Even though it’s not from Tally’s point of view, she can still be a huge influencial and important character!

  83. Lauren you are totally right! This first chapter is pretty much a flash-back to the first chapter of Uglies! Tally always sneaking of the NPT and now Aya. It’s just weird because I keep picturing this city as if it were exactly the same city Tally grew up in (but I know it’s not) so hopefully as Scott describes the city in the next few chapters I can get a new picture in my head. I have got to remember the difference between Japan and the US…lol.

    and to anna, extras takes place in japan and the main charicter is aya. the cure has been spead world wide and aya notices the differences. tally is gonna be in this book, but how she gets to japan is a question to me.

    and Amy-la: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is my favorite book! (sorry, Scott) It’s about vampires but not anything like Peeps. I don’t think there is an book that comes even close to being like Peeps. (peeps is a close second, though!!)

    Second: Amy-la and Lauren; I was looking at past comments and saw a Hillary all over the place, and I didn’t stop to think that it might be one person rather than mutiples. I don’t think I’m very mean, well I am mean when I can’t find the book that I want or have to wait for it. But surely all of you understand that type of predicament.

    Third: I thought Scott said Tally would only be making a brief cameo, or something along those lines, so I would take his word rather than get all worked up and be disappointed.

    Finally: I agree with IndigoEyes, about Tally and Zane being the better couple, and David having always known about the lesions but Zane figuring it out for himself. Plus I tend to prefer the more tragic characters. Like Jacob Black.

Cause, you said this is in Japan or something and I don’t know how fast news traveled around that time so it could have taken awhile for the ‘mind rain’ or whatever you called it to happen. hmmmm. This is making me think more than the upcoming Harry Potter book! -sniffle- (only about 5 days, give or take for that!) I’m not saying Harry will be killed by Voldemort (LORDY LOU!), I’m saying, I think, that he’ll succeed(sp?) in killing V. but one of V’s. followers will kill Harry in retaliation; or some such other thing very similar to that.   124. Those people on the Wall of Shame are just as whacked out as Death Eaters. I grew up in a VERY christian family and they find nothing wrong with it. My poppa, a catholic, is probably more PotterObsessed than I am. Those people have a few, if not many, loose skrews in there heads.

  128. Yeah ur right (i 4get who said this) but Scott did say Tally and David would only make a cameo appearance. So I guess everyone is gonna have to get used to it being all about Aya. But maybe Aya will be so similar to Tally that it won’t make much of a difference (??). But I know that I’ll always miss Tally and David no matter what!

  134. I dont think Hermonie will die. There is a HUGE chance that Harry and Voldemort will die. Ron will probably die. But I think thats about it. Probably some ppl from the order and some random death eaters but ur predicting that basically every main character will die and I honestly don’t think that’s going to happen.

  135. She (JKR) said three very important characters would die. Now, are they important because of their sacrifice in death, or because they are main characters? HMMMMMM…

    Actually, I hope Aya has a different personality, otherwise why change characters? other than wanting to change the time line?
    But I do hope they have things in common, like realizing what she realy wants rather than what has (in this story) been subtley(sp?) programmed into her, as is implied, what I read into it at least, at the end of the chapter.

  153. Darn! I just got COFFEE on my glasses. SO…What’s the Slytherin version again? I am refraining from reading the entirety of the series until I have finished the 7th so that things go more smoothly and I don’t have to tear out my hair in anticipation.

  155. Oh. My. God. I screamed when I saw the chapter. Thank you so much Scott! Now it’s time for the OBSESSIVE ANALYZING EXPERIENCE. Extras – I think there might be a law about how many children you could have and if you had more than one (or the required amount) they were an ‘extra’. Because in Specials it was mentioned that population growth was controlled so it wasnt growing exponentially. They might not have the same rights, as single children, and she is almost 16, official time for being pretty. The face rank thing might be about how recognizable the uglies or extras movie feeds and stuff are.

    I could be going out on a really weird theory here though, so you don’t have to listen to me.

  184. Totally, she makes the orphan-boy-with-magical-powers-that’s-in-a-prophecy seem not too cliché, which is really hard to do, but you can’t judge an author on how well they can pull it off. While, Scott can write original plot ideas fexcellently good.

    My friend asked for 6 stakes yesterday, like one of those 8 cm tall garden plant markers, but I literally thought ‘Vampire stakes? Mmmmk.’ And got out these 3-foot long sharpened wooden stakes. That was kinda embarassing, but at least I now know where they are. I got to go find the first Midnighter’s book, I haven’t read it in forever.

  231. omg!! i read this article about snape and how this guy thought he was good. but then it goes into details on why he now thinks he is evil. snape killed dumbledor, but on the bottom of page 595 (us hardcover) dumbledor says, “severus … please…” that could mean that he was saying please kill me. but he could also be saying “severus, i trusted you, dont kill me.” BUT SNAPE KNOWS LEGAMENCY! snape could of read dumbledors mind before killing him. my guess is that snape is gonna get killed by the order or voldemort (voldemort might be mad because draco was suppot to kill dumbledor.)

I LOVE Kenina-chan’s theory about who Extras are- but, sis, have you been reading too much of Ender’s Game? And what about “But, for some reason, it didn’t get the night-vision thing.”? It’s a bit repetitive, and it makes me think it’s foreshadowing something. And the last names… Fuse and Machina? A country thing or maybe… not lesions this time, but robots? The light-flashing: a paka-paka thing to control uglies?

As for myself, I was staring out at the ocean of clouds and imagined getting lost in them: the soft moister against my face, floating on the hills and dips of the puff whiteness, oblivion among the clouds.
    My mom had always dreamed of living in New York, but it was my sick grandfather that kept her here. She was an artist, but my grandfather disapproved of spending your entire life painting and with a sister who is deaf, my mother was unable to follow her dream. With his death came freedom and $760,000.
    “Honey? Can I get you something to drink?”

    I tried to sit up but the slightest movement rent my skull in two. I waited, unmoving, till the pain subsided to a dull throbbing before attempting to rise again.
    Finally able to look past the wreckage before me, I was beginning to understand what had happened.
    My father, consumed in his rage, had narrowly missed hitting the person that came out of nowhere and drove into a ditch, but my dad was not on the seat next to me.
    Slowly and painfully I dragged myself out and lay on the grass. Crying and moaning when I discovered my broken arm. I looked around for anything familiar and caught sight of a human sized lump on the ground directly in front of the car.
    “DAD!” I screamed and frantically ran to his side, but the only reply was my scream of agony when I discovered that he was already gone.
    “Two down, one to go,” I jumped up still craddling my arm to see a pale figure dressed in ragged cloths standing by the side of the road. His perfect features, menacing smile and wide cruel eyes made me cringe. “Such a shame your father had to go.”
    Jason had warned me I was being hunted, but he never said anything about vampires.

    I was used to this kind of thing. I was unusually tall at almost 6 feet and I had gorgeous dark chocolate hair that fell in waves down to my shoulder blades. My eyes were a deep blue. These two gorgeous guys didn’t seem to fall for my spell, but I could feel there constant gaze on me.

  293. wait, so if someone’s and extra they’re not the first child in a family? i thought it was because everyone’s face was rated (the face rank on her eyescreen) when they were born or whatever, and that determined your like social status or whatever. i thought that she was an extra because she wasn’t very “pretty,” since her face rank was so bad (451,396 out of 1,000,000–really low), and that was what the whole “extra” thing was. i’m probably totally wrong, but that was just the impression i got when i read it.

    Extras – I think there might be a law about how many children you could have and if you had more than one (or the required amount) they were an ‘extra’.
    Because in Specials it was mentioned that population growth was controlled so it wasn’t growing exponentially. They might not have the same rights, as single children, and she is almost 16, official time for being pretty. Anyways, I thought of the first child thing because of what is happening now and the fact that Akira Hall had a really low face rank, as if it was isolated.
    Oh and the thing about a ‘construction site across town’, I guess that could be another piece of evidence that the population is growing exponentially, they would need more buildings.
    I think face rank is the scale of being famous, the lower the number, the more famous you are. The ‘face’ part may be of how recognizable you are from your feeds. Feeds seem really important in this society, as Aya sees the “ego-kickers” talking into their cameras. These “ego-kickers” probably have big egos, thinking that they’ll be famous because of their feeds. OR That’s what they do; kick people’s egos, kind of like “Reputation Bombers”
    “She’d had her own feed for a whole year now, had kicked a great story just a week ago and she was still anonymous. *Well tonight was finally going to change that*” Aha! Subtle FORESHADOWING. “Reputation Bombers.” Is it another clique that Aya might belong to, or wishes to join? They dress to be invisible, like Aya, so maybe this is what she will be recording on her feed, a bombing of someone’s reputation?
    Tech-heads: The people who trick things, like the uglies did to hoverboards and to get past the drones. Except pretties do it too. Fuse and Machina sound like tech-head names.
    “Real AI might still be illegal” So, Artificial Intelligence *might* be illegal. That means that the government is not as stable as it could be; yet they do have feeds. If AI isn’t allowed, then what those tech-heads are doing is illegal, yet there seem to be a whole clique of them… I need to think about this…
    Either everyone has lesions of some sort since they are using pretty talk or paka-paka, which I totally hope is not happening. **It’s probably a fad of some sort.** Well, the cure is injectable, but what if there was a new thing? – The lesions could be injectable and target the certain place in your brain.

  455. Yeah, I went and there were 250 people (approx.) in front of me in line, so I was, like, “No way!” I went over to the grocery store and I got one there at 12:02. They made us wait an extra 2 minutes! There were no visible clocks, so everyone was looking at their cell phones. I set mine ahead by one minute so I could yell before anyone else. Also, I finished the book in 5 hours, I tried to read it slower, but it didn’t work that well. I won’t tell anyone what happened. Except for that it didn’t make my cry.

  548. hey dude i just finished the last chapter of specials like 5 minutes ago for like the 3rd time and then i heard that there was a 4th book. so i check out the first chapter on here and it talks about this aya girl… where is tally? she was like the focus of all 3 books and then u wanna go and bring some1 new in? where in the world is tally? thats the only reason why i wanted to buy the 4th book when it came out. dude i want to keep reading about tally and david… i love those books because of her and now shes like disappeared. dude wat happened? do tell all cause im mad now man.

  549. back from leadership camp! it was kinda weird. i had to hold a whole bunch of guys’ hands, do the hussel and the electric slide, and listen to all of the guys at camp sing… build me up buttercup, you know that i love you… really really off key. but i learned a lot! (ish)

  575. Wow. That book is going to be good. I just hope i get hooked on the main character like i did with Tally. But, Scott Westerfields amazing and i totally trust him. It’s gonna be a hit.   584. I loved the entire series and have read it like a million time. I just really hope that Tally and David and Shay and everyone else are still in this book.
    I feel really stupid though. I like just figured out that Extras was coming out and that it was a continuation of the Uglies Trilogy. When I found out, I was soooo excited and was jumping up and down!!!

  595. ive been wanting to email u 4 like ever. youre books r extremely addictive but i must admit, after reading that zane died in specials i called u a few bad names. i kept thinking hed wake up long enough 4 tally to say like goodbye. when he didnt i kinda called u a deranged psychopathic man with a dark, twisted mind. then i sorta threw the book in the gravel. oops.but 4 some odd reason i decided 2 read all your books (twice so far) and cant wait to read extras. even though all i could think about 4 a week was a different ending to specials. that made me sooooooo MAD! sorry, im done ranting now. bye!

    I wonder what the non-Extras are called? I guess that’ll be the title of the next book!

    In a way, this is like the opposite of what the world was like in the first books. In that era, everyone was trying to look more or less the same, but now people are trying to look as different from each other as possible. Interesting!

  606. Here again…Not enough words to even put into retrospective what Uglies did for me.

    That’s how I wrote the first half of my story, met my best friend, publisher, and boss, E.M.O. (and no she’s not a cutter!)
    Figured I would try and find something new, and hey I’m only 12, reading about places called Crumblyville, and rollercoasters,hoverboards,bionic women, blah , blah, blah, and instantly I was hooked. I cried my eyes out when Specials was over and now I scream with delight over Extras!

    Tally and David are definately my favorite couple. My main character in a book I’m writing now is David, and even though he’s got a total different personality and everything in your books, I freaked when I saw the name in Uglies. I was crying and screaming and running around my house. My parents thought I was dying haha.
    Yeah, I can’t wait for this book! I need to get to a book store before the week is over.
