We might have a Favorite Quotations section in Tally’s World: The Ultimate Guide to the Uglies Universe. So I thought I’d ask you guys what your fave quotes are.

Here are mine:

Feel free fill this comment thread with your own suggestions. I’d prefer to stick to things that the characters actually say, rather than my own spare prose. But we’ll see.

  3. so I got out all my books and looked started skimming through uglies and I liked the irony of this one.
    Tally to Shay:
    “I don’t think I could stand to lose another friend. You know? We don’t have to worry about one of us abandoning the other.”
    Maybe she should have worried.
    Thats all i can find for now. I think I might just have to read all the books again and like, write down all of my favorite quotes. But the ones you have are most of my favs.

    Ok so its not the best, but Zane must receive recognition!

  7. I like “Face it, Tally-wa. You’re Special.” From Shay. It’s not particularly fantastic on its own, but the implications are cool. And I don’t have the books with me so I can’t look for others.

    also, Shay’s entire “grinding your bones and peeling off your skin ect” speech.
    okay, noticed that u used Extras quotes up there so i’m guessing they’re allowed.
    hmmmmmm….
    what were Shay’s Extras nano jokes again?
    or that line Aya had about “saving the world without blowing anything up”?
    wow, i am a bad uglies fangirl. i can hardly quote anything.
    now midnighters, that is my personal speciality.

    and yes i loved Shay’s “They’re just lucky we didn’t use Nanos.” quote from extras.

  25. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! So many to choose from! The WHOLE book!DUH!!!
    Okay I’m being dumb.Oh yeah that reminds me! Yesterday my friend was all to my other friend”You are acting so dumb.     i guess i like zane’s quotes because they kind of
    wake up tally to the real world, and she has to face reality.
    especially the one about how she’s so special no one can touch her, and she has to cut her self to feel.

    Then, of course the classic, “I don’t want to hurt you but I will if I have too.”

    Ninety-nine percent of humanity had had soemthing done to their brains and only a few people in the world knew exactly what.

    THen you have to include “the early summer sky was the color of cat vomit.”

    Interesting way to begin a saga. It’s great though, very captivating.

  49. omg! thats so hard! but there is one thing that the quote spred should not be without; tally’s manifesto from specials. i think that that was one of the best things that tally ever said in all four books. the guide so has to have a copy of that in it. =]!!

  50. the whole manifesto would be a little long for just a quote section. especially if he already puts in “Freedom has a way of destroying things.”

    maybe it could be placed in the beginning to blind all those first page readers with its awsomeness.

  54. Ohhhhh, i like that quote. I remebvr when i thought David was the best thing ever! Man was i wrong! I need to reread the Uglies and stuff, it feeks like its been forever! I still love Zane better though. I like David but, he doesnt no how to touch my heart like Zane.

  55. Well, sadly my friends are currently borrowing all of my books except for Specials, so I guess for right now I’ll just do my favorite from those.

    AND my favorite part of the uglies’ series, also happens to be my favorite piece of writing that I have EVER read in my life. Its the last ping that Tally sends to everyone before going into the wild with David. It’s AMAZING and I’m proud to say I have it memorized, word for word. I DEFINITLY think you should include that!!!

    See, theres one thing that drives me crazy. Tally needs to realize SHEEEEE is the reason Zane dies. He was trying to get ride of the shackyness to suit HEr so SHE could be with him. I dont no but if my boyfriend died for me, i would mourn im like crazy!

    Tally does know that it was her fault. and I think that is what motivates her to save diego. She is trying to make up for killing zane and destroying the city.
    really, tho, none of the bad things tally did was her fault. The only thing she did wrong was be brainwashed into wanting to be pretty and that wasn’t even her fault. Because she was brainwashed, she decided to betray the smoke. She actually changed her mind but she accidently betrayed them anyway. that lead to the destruction of the smoke, which lead to her saving everyone except shay (which, in a way, was shays own fault for fighting too hard). That lead to Tally turning pretty, which lead to her meeting Zane, who CHOSE to take the pills with her, which lead to the headaches, and them getting the bracelets. This lead to her not being able to talk to shay (which lead to shay becoming special), and Zanes headaches. This lead to them escaping, and it was SHAY’S FAULT that she didn’t come with them. This lead to Zane and Tally eventually getting caught and Tally becoming Special. This lead to her following Zane and hating Zane (she was brain-damaged remember) and then this lead to Zanes eventual death and the war with deigo.
    So, as you can clearly see (ish?), none of the bad things that happened were really Tally’s fault. She only really chose to do good things (burning the necklace, saving the smokies, taking the pills, saving deigo, and others.) I guess it was bad that she stole David from Shay, which really was of her own free will.

    I LOVE WICKED!! (the musical. haven’t read the book.) IT IS THE GREATEST THING EVER!!! (ok so not as good as uglies, but it has got to be the greatest musical ever.) EVERYONE MUST GO SEE IT ASAP!! (Sorry to random people who don’t live near any of the cities its in. I live near Chicago so that is where I saw it.) YYYAAAAAYYYYYY! 😀

    Even though it wasn’t a quote, my favorite “part” of Extras was the very end, when Aya watches Tally and David disappear together into the gardens.
    I re read that part like, thirty times for some reason.

    I squeed so bad when I read this. (I’m a huge Tally fangirl)

    No really though, i am a huge fan of the ping-la one. And there has to be something about Moggle, because i LOVE moggle.

    Honestly, i hate Shay. I hate that Shay made her spaecil becuase if you look back, she is proubly to blam for the whole Zane dieing thing. Shay just HAD to make her speacil, like life wasnt hard enough. and tally wanted to ask him to come with her and she saw him and since he was all “little bit shaky” she couldnt stand him. And of curse Shay didnt help, she was throwing stuff at him to catching knowing full well he wouldnt be able to! and of course then tally saw more wrong things with him. Urg. Why cant people just have a simple relationship these days!?!?!?!

  90. Because Bran-la, it makes everything more interesting. And personally, Shay is my favorite character. And it wasn’t Shay who made Tally special. Cable did. Then again, I guess Shay didn’t do anything to stop it, but still. Shay was trying to help Tally see what had happened to Zane, to help her understand that they were different, that there was a lot wrong with Zane’s mind. Which was because of the pill, which was because Tally volunteered to be pretty and be cured, which happened because Shay wouldn’t give consent because she had the lesions, which happened because Tally turned in the Smoke, which happened because Cable gave Tally the locket and Tally betrayed the Smoke (accidentaly) so she could turn pretty, and she was supposed to betray the Smoke because Shay had run away. So, I guess pretty much everything is Shay’s fault, but without her the story would just be bland. So…. yeah. ^-^

  101. I liked tally because at first she wasn’t all that independant.
    She relied on Peris when she was an ugly, and then when she met Shay she stuck to her too.
    I think that by the end of Uglies, she became a lot more indpendant. She knew that she didn’t have to do what everyone told her to do, and she had some rough desicions to make. She was scared, but she didn’t get to the point where she totally broke. She was couragous and she knew that a lot of what happened was her own fault, and even though she let it bother her a bit, that doesn’t mean she backed down.

  108. yeah, Tally seems to stay the same, but i think that a lot of that’s cuz ur reading through her POV, so u see her doubts about everything. if u were to see just her actions, she’d probably come across a lot like Shady.

    i disagree about the “knowing what to do” and “knew how to be a leader” things. Tally was always running around lost and bounced around by the system. she learned those things in the end, but even then, not really. even in Extras she’s still got some issues and stuff.

    I think I really would have liked Zane if Tally hadn’t been with David when they “hooked up”. I felt like she was cheating on David. Plus, Tally and Zane were both pretties and their whole relationship seemed artificial to me (I know a lot of people don’t think that, though). He was a great guy. In fact, pretty much every male in the book was a great guy. Tally acted bratty and mean to everyone, but they were all still nice to her. So, yeah.

    i just got a chocolate Frosti from Wendy’s. 😀 and i get my evil braces off a month earlier than planned!! yay me! i’m really happy right now! see i have had 2 phases of braces…i 1st got them on the summer of 3rd grade then got them off right before 6th grade started and got a retainer i had the retainer for a year and trust me i wore it all the time. and my teeth were pretty good just not good enough. and so then they decided i would get stinking phase two…which sucked buckets. and so summer before 8th grade i got my braces back on and now i’m a freshman in highschool and will finally get them off in a month. can you see how happy i am? the only down fall is that i will have a stupid retainer for 2 years that will give me a lisp. hate lisps. o well though. soon i will be brace-face no more! 😀

  365. My favorite quote isn’t really a quote at all. It just goes with the quote and what I think part of the book was trying to mean…

    This quote and throughout the Specials book makes me think what made Tally cure herself was love. First she loved David then she loved Zane and then she was all twisted up inside… Love can sometimes do amazing things… It’s just to bad Shay-la never got it….
