Midnighters in Japan

About a year ago, I blogged about the wonderful Japanese cover of the first Midnighters book. Well, the other two in the series are available now, and are equally lovely.

Let’s take a look at all three:

What I love about these interpretations is how they’re simultaneously literal and surreal. All three use scenes directly from the book, but they also have a trippiness about them: the close up on the raindrops, the huge moon, the distended human figures.

Also, I like how the key settings—suburban, urban, and wild—show up across the covers. Location is everything in Midnighters, where the differences between city and wild are even more extreme than those in Uglies. So it’s nice to see those geographies reflected here.

And best of all are the odd touches of a different culture, like the water tower on the book 2 cover. Maybe it’s just me, but that tower seems more Okinawan than Oklahoman.

Altogether satisfying.

  1. UHHHHH!!!!! My computer hates me. It just deleted the blog entry that I was working on. So, I redid it. It’s way shorter though…

  2. yeah…I’m listening to Taylor Swift. My brother randomly came into the room and I was bobbing my head to the extreme to the music. He looked at me all weird and left. hahaha.

  3. Ha, my little brother hates Taylor Swift. I think it’s cuz he’s in love with Hannah Montana(*GAG ME!*) and he thinks Taylor Swift is like taking all her fans or whatevers but seriously though…grossness. Which songs do you like best? I like Stay Beautiful and I’m only Me when I’m With you.

  4. I like Picture to Burn and I like The Outside. My computer has stopped being mad at me. It wasn’t loading and was being very annoying.

    gewiz. lots of stuff.

  7. Yeah…I haven’t learned to just shut up. Sometimes I talk so fast that even if what I was saying did make sense, no one can actually understands it.

  8. same here. so frustraiting. like when i study for exams and my friends are quizing me, I’ll say something really fast and not sense-making, and they’ll ask me for actions.

  9. YEAH!!!!!! ME TOO!!!! And then on tests I have to make footnotes so that the teacher knows what the heck I’m talking about. I think I make more sense when I’m writing than when I’m talking.

  10. Same…in reality I’m very insane. My friends and I have had actual serious discussions about what our excuses are when the men in white coats come…lol.

  11. Im the only crazy one in my group the rest of them look at me funny and would prolly be the ones who call the men in while coats. I do have one friend whos like me but I dont see her as often even though we go to the same school
