About a year ago, Justine and I were guests of honor at High Voltage Confusion, a yearly convention in Detroit. As we blogged here and here, we had an incredible time and met lots of lovely people.

Our introduction to the local folks was via a long interview with blogmeister John Scalzi, best known for his crankiness at the Whatever. He asked us the usual stuff about ourselves and our work, but then we branched into a far-ranging discussion of YA. I listened to the interview recently, and it was one of those, “Huh, I was pretty smart that day” things.

It really sums up my thinking about our field, and Justine is also on song. So if you’ve got a spare, um, close to an hour(!) forty-five minutes, take a listen.

  8. In my mind, that hoverboard is similar to the oh-so-obscure mode of transportation known as the segway. Personally, I prefer the hoverboards in Uglies. I’d actually like to get off the ground, as in people-look-like-ants, I-might-die-if-I-fall (without crash bracelets) high.

  10. This interview began with me showing everyone in the audience, along with the first three writers I ever met a convention, my spiderman shoes. I cannot wait until this year’s Confusion. Cory’s coming. Then Wheaton’s coming to Penguicon in May.

  12. The hoverboard doesn’t actually hovers and it looks like a vacuum cleaner or a lawn mower. LOL.

    But it looks speedy enough. Maybe some day they will actually have one that really does hovers. Just like those boards in UGLIES and SPECIALS. I prefer a SPECIALS hoverboard though. 😀

    As +-+miko kagome+-+ said, it does resemble a vacuum cleaner. But it’s a step closer to a real get-off-the-ground, crash-bracelet-neccessary thing.

  20. Yes, it would be really awesome to ride a hoverboard to school. Unless they stuck in some stupid safety regulation thing and you have to get a license when you are 16.

    That was a really long and really awesome interview. Especially Justine’s bit about old people saying YA is dead. I was like… they think that? For serious? And I hope that I won’t end up as those narrow readers when I grow up. Also, the things about horrible writing as a kid. I look back on what I’ve written last year and think it that the work was totally ridiculous.

    I’ve just realised that Tally&Zane sounded a little bit like Tarzan&Jane. Just saying, you know. like when you look at a word too long and then it just doesn’t seem right anymore. Heh.

  28. Ashley-wa : I heard it was so sad because they follow dog from time he was a puppy to the time he is put down my friends cried I didn’t see it yet though cause my moms a sucker for sad movies she always cries even at some commercials

  31. Ashley-wa: I just saw Marley and Me yeasterday. it was really sad at the end. my friends were either near to tears (like me), or laughing at the people crying (only the guys). it was a good movie.

  43. Allie-wa, aren’t you always supposed to be super enthusiastic in infomercials? I mean, just look at the guys who do Oxi-Clean or the Sham-wow, or (my personal favorite) Snuggies! haha… Just think: someday, you’ll be looking at a 1-800 number for a hoverboard that is slightly less lame than the one on this thirty second clip.

  44. That’s awesome! I can’t wait to watch those videos! (I have to leave..and have dial-up…But it will be wholly worth it) Hoverboards rock! Next to anything with the word ‘hover’ in it, and sneak suits in the land of Uglies, Aircraft strength teeth would be great. A video on teeth would be boring…but hey.

  47. Omg, I was reading the synopsis for Legally Blonde on iTunes, and in the description, it said the main character was “bubble-headed Elle.” I just thought that was really funny.

  48. I would definitely prefer a hover board like the ones in the Uglies books (there so much cooler). The one in the video looked a little like lawn mower.

    I was also wondering, if Bixby had those spectacular fireworks at midnight, then the midnighters would have an hour with a sky-ful of frozen fireworks. I mean, how cool would that be?!

    Audrey-Sensei: ‘Bubble-headed Elle’ = LOL. Brings to mind of another equally bubble-headed character named Elle, in heroes.

    I am making brownies. But not just brownies, they are brownie pops because you put them in the freezer and then you dip them in MORE chocolate. Talk about weight gain, right?

  69. Um, I have sleeping problems anyways so I don’t get a ton usually. It’s kinda weird. Sometimes I’ll be really tired cuz of it, but sometimes I’ll be hyper. Woah, Bran-la those sound amazing! Lol, I think I gained like 5 pounds just thinking about them, not good! Lmao…jkjk.

  73. lex: There will definitely be auditions for the parts of Tally and Shay, etc. However, I can pretty much guarantee you that they won’t be open casting calls. You have about two years to get an agent. Good luck.

    Trish-la: What? Elle from Heroes was not bubble-headed! She was the most adorable and messed up character in the entire show and I was so sad when (SPOILER) Sylar killed her.

    Oh yeah, and this is my first post on Westerblog in 2009! How exciting is that?

  75. Haha, Abby, have you ever seen Mythbusters? Basically, to make a hoverboard, they strapped a leafblower to an innertube thing. Uglies hoverboards are still about 300 years away.

  79. I’m going to try to build a hover board this summer.
    My dad’s going to help me. We’re going to get a leaf blower at first and then some thing stronger (lawn mover engine?) and use some king of propeller to generate enough wind.

  80. Audrey-sensei: oh my gosh…i saw that episode of mythbusters!!!!!! i totally wanted to go out and build my own mythbuster’s hoverboard, but alas, it happens to cost money.

  82. Audrey-Sensei: She was in Season 2…. but that was when we didn’t know her as much. She was all ‘Daddy can I keep him.’ and ‘I wanna zap you’. She became my favourite sociopath in S3 and I was so upset when she d***, I was just starting to get into the whole Syelle thing and then they k***** her. How unfair was that?

    Bran-la: The brownies sounds really really tasty. And I’m getting hungry thinking of it.. mmm

  86. Ohhh we made one of those in school last year! It was fun! Except this one kid pushed me off on accident. lol it’s kind of dangerous. I wish I had a real hoverboard!

    Trish-la: True. Very true. But what about those flashbacks to when she was working with Bennet? That made everything make sense, but it wasn’t very consistent with her Season 2 characteristics. She could have had her memory erased by ominous Bob, but she still remembered the incident with Sylar when she saved him from committing suicide, so idk. It could have just been bad writing.

    Elle is a really bubble-headed name after all. Maybe it’s because it’s also a name of that magazine.

    i hate homework too. it sucks and i’ve got a ton to do still. i go back monday. 🙁 and then i have finals on thursday and friday. isn’t that stupid? we go on break for 2 weeks and then have to take finals after we’ve forgotten everything. my school is dumb.

  94. Jay-wa: I totally agree. We go back to school Monday and I have to do not one, but TWO essays. grant it, they’re somewhat fun and creative, but they’re still hard and a relatively big part of my grade. If *I* had a fairy, it would be a Good-grade fairy. I wouldn’t need it in, say English, but I would definitely use it to get an A in Chemistry and Algebra 2/Trig.

    Actually, I do have a fairy. It’s a fabulous Handbag-fairy. I can always find great purses that look adorable and are (usually) affordable. And I can fit *anything* and everything in them. Once, I snuck a full liter of Arizona Iced tea into a movie theater for my friend’s birthday by hiding it in my Dolce and Gabana knockoff. And you couldn’t even tell.

    That’s my story for today.

  95. I was listening to the interview (yay! most important sci-fi writer! finally) and it sounded like some one was pouring water during it…I loved the interview! Justine sounds awesome! And now I finally know how to say her last name! It was vastly hilarious and informative!

  96. i NEED to update my blog….but alas, i haven’t the time. for now, i am writing another short story, or as my friends would call it, short novel. i swear, i WON’T go over 20 pages this time. i mean, really, how much is there to write about a girl trapped in a blizzard with a stranger gripping her arm, not letting her go? this one wont be too long.

    Jay-wa: I think it’s totally cool how we are starting to combine Pretty talk *and* NA slang. Maybe someday, this new lingo will escape from the internet and enter our conversations at school. That would be interesting.

    And I think “littlies” is Australian slang, not made up, but I’m not from Australia, nor have I ever been there, so I’m not sure.

  99. Andrea-la: Okay, that’s good. I’m working on my AP Euro homework. At least it’s kind of an interesting assignment, because it’s a story about a person in the time period we’re working on. Historical fiction is fun, so I don’t mind it so much.

  100. I have a question for everyone that’s read Love is Hell. The last story in there is LoveStruck by Melissa Marr. Am I the only one that thinks the song I’m Yours by Jason Mraz totally fits it? It came on the radio this morning and I was like Woah! Sounds like an interesting story Andrea-la.

  101. Okay, if anyone has an iPod Touch or iPhone, download the Tetris application (it’s on sale for the Holidays). It’s totally trippy and the graphics are awesome, and since you have to use a touch screen to navigate it, it’s totally something that people in Tally’s world would use.

    Something that would be okay about Tally’s world: No more school after 16! (and the aircraft hard teeth..)

  105. Jay-wa: I would use Ugly/Pretty/Special/NA slang at school, but most of my friends have read the Uglies series, so they would be like “Meh, you stole that from scott westerfeld,” so I can’t. And yeah, scott-la definitely used the term littlie.

    Actually, one term I have actually used in life is faither (from Skinned). I just use it as an insult about someone who is a jesus freak and goes around pushing their ideas on others, so the term pretty much fits. I have nothing against religion (well, actually I do, but not against people that practice it), it’s just that when a certain person at my school brings god into every conversation, it gets very annoying. And now I have the perfect word to describe him! Thank you Robin Wasserman!

  108. Yayayayay!!! Why was I ‘yay’ing? you may ask. Because I FINALLY got my Bogus to Bubbly ytd night! That’s why I hadn’t been on, I’ve been reading it late into the night and finished it this morning. So, yes. Littlies is an Aussie slang.

    School already started for me, but it’s the start of a new school year so we are all at orientation and such and I got no homework. =D

    Yes, I prettyspeak has found it’s way into my world. And also stuff like fawesome and fexellent. But mostly people think I’m just speaking wierd. Well most of my friends and I speak and reference really strange things, you should hear us during lunch. We would be making jokes about Schrodinger’s Cat (an experiment in which a cat get’s shot… or maybe not) and the LHC and how to prove that pi is rational. It’s all really geeky.

    Need ideas for a fundraising thingy. Was thinking of a cookie bake sale. No one can resist the temptation of chocolate chip confectionary, can they? Or maybe I can borrow your brownie pop recipe, Bran-la…

  112. Trish-la: I learned about Schrodinger’s cat from The Big Bang Theory, but I thought it was in a quantum box?

    Audrey-sensei: Most people at my school are too stupid to read or to ignorant to read anything besides what they’re assigned, so it’s fun to use words they don’t understand (like pulchy) or fun words. Dumb people like simple words like bogus and bubbly.
    My friends find it vastly annoying when I use pretty slang, but it’s just SO AWESOME.

    (slanguage is awesome. Purely.)

  115. Jay-wa: Slanguage? You’re my hero. Problem with me, is I end up forcing my friends to read the awesome books I do, hence the doos language would be recognized. I’ll have to make the integration slowly.

    Trish-la: I don’t really like nerds, but there’s a difference between them and people who are really smart (here’s an example of my obsession with word accuracy). Smart people are awesome. I think I’m one, but you never can be sure. You sound like a smartie too.

    Audrey-Sensei: I learned what Schrodinger’s cat was from T.V. so..you don’t seem ignorant because you don’t know. I don’t know if you followed that link, but basically there’s this cat, in a box, put there by Mr. Schrodinger and there is also a vile of poison in said box. So, theres a cat in a box, with poison and no one knows if it’s dead or alive. (though I suspect without any oxygen, it’s probably dead..)
    No one remembers the slang from the books I force them to read. Massively sad-making.

    Trish-la: Good point, why don’t we have hoverboards yet? Someone better get crackin’.

  123. I hate school. Why cant they make it fun? We can start by taking homework away. I hate homework. After homework we can remove all objects that require thinking logically. Thinking logically can be boring. Unless you just need to. Then we can pretend that a dictator over ruled us and said we couldn’t use pencils, pens, or any devices that caused for your hand to make letters. Then we couldn’t write! But then they would resort to computers… We will make the dictator ban computers in schools and/or around teachers who command you to do things.

    My style is more Pac Sun and Hollister. I love the neon green tees and vans and skinney jeans! I love the colored skinney jeans the most like purple and blue!

    I don’t have a myspace either. 🙁 But I am writing a book! Its about a human who is searching for her love because a crazy frotune teller told her her TRUE love (as in not her boy friend, Alex) is hiding in the shadows and is evil! That evil true love is a vampire and she has to choose between her current boy friend and the Vampire! OOOOOH SCARY! I don’t like scary things. That’s why I sleep with Elmo in my bed. 😀

    I’m not really a Elmo freak… I just act like it. My boyfriend thinks it’s cute. 🙂

    Ewwww, Jacob EVIL. I won’t get into that rant right now though, it’s a really long one.
    Ah! Elmo is scary. At least my little brother’s elmo’s scary. It’s like demented and thrashed cuz he’s had it for like 11 years and it’s missing one of it’s eyes and half it’s stuffing and a lot of fur and has a million holes, the poor lil guy. I’m writing a book too. Can’t tell ya what it’s about though. Tis a secret! Rofl. I don’t have a particular style per se…I like tons of things and I almost never match. Purposely though…neon colors are fun.

Tally&Zane/Amanda-wa: The book is called “Audrey, Wait!” and it’s about this girl who breaks up her bf and he writes a song about it that then becomes a chart-topping one hit wonder song of the year Hey There Delilah type delio and she’s instantly famous. It’s a really fun book, I recommend it. There’s this one scene where she goes to a concert and wears leg warmers on her arms, which your comment remind me of, that’s all. It brought a really funny visual image to my head. I have this thing with visual images.

    Amanda-wa/All Gossip Girl fans: I love Chuck and Blair together, and Jenny and Nate! Dan and Serena bug the crap out of me though. Seriously, the whole thing with their parents makes everything gross, and they should just give it up. Dorota is my favorite, though. Blair is so mean to her.

    I finished reading Blue Noon today and the ending was unexpected. You must have heard this a number of times. But Why did you make Jessica frozen in the normal time? After all she was trying to save people’s lives? Are there more books in the series? The ned was so lonely.

    I finished reading Uglies trilogy last month. I am surprised taht it hasn’t been optioned into a movie yet.

    I do hope you answer my question. I didn’t know what was the best place to ask this question about Midnighters — e-mail or the Blue Noon Spoliers page. So I am posting it here.

    Audrey-Sensei: I don’t like Serena and Dan either. I don’t really like Dan period. Serena is too good for Dan and the parents just make things worse. But I do like Serena’s mom and Rufus. I feel bad for Chuck. 🙁 It ust be hard for his dad to die. I’m not that close to my dad, but still I imagine his pain. 😥

  155. That was an awesome interview. I put it on my i pod and listened to it on the way to school and back. I related to so much of it, too! I like when you talked about comic-con, cause I’ve been there! 🙂 It was also funny when you guys were talking about winter and how she said if it’s under 50 degrees people would be, like dying. It sounding a lot like my older sister, who can’t stand it being under 60, because we live in Arizona. xD Anyway, thanks for letting us listen to it, I really enjoyed it! ^^

  157. On the subject of Uglies tech, this thing I saw online the other day is *just like* the charging station Uglies hoverboards use to charge! Seriously! Well, similar by how I pictured the charging station. xD

  159. My friend from school back in 5th grade made a hoverboard similar to those for science fair. (1999) Because he was only a fifth grader he had help with the cutting and building and it had a separate power source so you couldn’t move freely, you had to stay in one place. It was fun.
