Cheap Stuff

Note All of these deals are over. But there’s a cool video below, and info about my Sydney Writers Festival appearance.

If you’ve never tried the audio book of Leviathan, it’s pretty awesome. Alan Cumming does a wonderful job with all the accents and characters.

For the next day or so, you can download the audiobook for only $5.99 from Audible. (Offer only good in the US, I think.)

Click here to make it happen. This offer expires at the end of Monday May 20, US time.

As a reminder, here’s one of my interviews with Alan about the books:

Also, on Monday morning, US time, there will be another low-price offer for another of my books, which I’ll announce right here. I’m not allowed to tell you till then, so come back Monday!

UPDATE:
The first book of the Midnighters series is on sale to Kindle readers for $1.99 (US only.) Click here to buy it. Monday, May 20 ONLY. So act fast.

Last night I had a great time at the Aurealis Awards in Sydney. And I’ll be appearing at the Sydney Writer’s Festival next week. On Saturday, May 25, at 11:30AM, I’ll be on a panel with Lauren Beukes, David M. Henley, and James Bradley.

What is speculative fiction, and where do the boundaries start to blur between genres and sub-genres? Have the classic genres changed now that we live in a world where technology has caught up?

This is free and no bookings required. Event details.

Just got back from my 50th birthday vacation, and will resume normal blogging shortly. Thanks for sticking around.

  1. Anyway, I’m glad the audio book is cheap, I’ve been wanting to buy it for a while now, but have been basically broke (too many books and not enough money).
    Yay! Scott’s back to blogging!

  2. Welcome back! Hope your birthday was awesome.
Also, have you heard of the Google Glass? It sounds almost straight out of Extras.
What do you think of it?

  3. Happy B-day, Scott!! Hope you had a great time 🙂

    @3 & 5- what is Google Glass???…sounds interesting….

  4. It’s a wearable computer – pair of glasses style, with voice command and a heads up display.

  5. congrats Scott! great to hear an update!
@Julie-wa i want the Google Glasses so much! they’re so awesome and yeah kind of like something out of Extras.

um so Scott it is past morning here in the U.S. so can you give us the other update plz? …unless you meant Hawaii time. it’s only about 9:45 am there when i’m commenting this.

  6. Compared to an eye-screen Google Glass isn’t very icy 🙂 BUT it is still freaking cool! They aren’t even for sale yet though, are they?

  7. Only trial ones were for sale for a limited time, but the official thing won’t be for sale until the end of the year about.

  8. The audiobook is what taught me to speak in a Scottish accent – which comes in handy for my Steampunk character, my Renaissance Fair character, and my Merida cosplay.

  9. The audible page says or me that the Leviathan audio book is now 7.49. Not that it really matters, but I wonder if anyone else has the same result.

  10. Some sort of membership thing, I now believe. How I wish for an edit button. 😉

  12. Happy belated birthday! 😀

*sob* I could’ve had the audiobook on my phone if I hadn’t bought that last song…. (For the record, it was “Early One Morning” because CHAOS WALKING. Still doesn’t beat Leviathan. 🙁 )

I’m surprised. This was yesterday. I’m not way late. Whew. Such a chaotic last few days. That Google Glass thing sounds amazing. I feel like stuff like that shouldn’t exist yet for some reason….

Now, off to prove Antonio and Bassanio are in love with each other and Portia is a possessive ninny. 😀 (I’m that weird girl who LIKES analyzing Shakespeare. Hi.)

    Also, who saw Into Darkness?

(Please tell me I’m not the only one.)

    Who saw it?
    Who cried?
Who knows what scene I mean when I say THE SCENE made me cry?
Who desperately needs to see it again?

(AHHHH THIS MOVIE WAS SO AMAZING. FIVE YEARS OF PATIENTLY WAITING….)

  13. Wow, the Google Glass does sound pretty cool, and yeah, Extras-like. I saw something like that in a magazine the other day, it was some glasses that you could watch movies with, like instead of lenses, it was a screen or something. I wonder how the world’s gonna be like when we all have stuff like that…

@Midshipman K- I saw it too!! Twice!! And yes I cried. Twice. It was such a cool movie! I could watch it a thousand times and not get bored 🙂

  14. So….a while ago you mentioned movie news. You ever going to share this with us? cause it is really driving me crazy!!

  15. @19: Whoa. Movies? Doesn’t anyone like the real world anymore….? (Actually, wait, why do I read then? XD)

YAY! Someone else who has seen it! I’m seeing it again on Saturday (hopefully). We’re taking my friend. 😀 I haven’t actually seen the old series or movies, but my dad had watched [a certain movie, if you know it] often enough for me to recognize the parallel of THE SCENE and I was just….no. Tears….
I’m trying to watch all the old Star Trek stuff now because I want to understand all the inside jokes….like the tribbles. Do you know that one? And I’m named after someone from Deep Space 9, so….
ANYWAY. I could just talk about Into Darkness forever. Gods it was so amazing….
“I am expressing multiple attitudes simultaneously, sir. To which are you referring?” 😀
And that moment when Kirk and Scotty were going to fall and Chekov caught them….and everything….and ahhh I have homework. How am I even supposed to function when I want to see this movie so badly….?

  16. @21 i’ve heard of Into Darkness, and it would appear to be very amazing. can you explain without spoilers please?
and also being named after someone from Deep Space 9 that is so cool! who?

  17. @21- well, I watched about half of The Next Generation with my dad, who’s always liked Picard better than Kirk. But now that I’ve seen these movies, I do want to watch the original series.
I think I know which movie you mean…is it Generations? (I won’t say anything else cause of spoilers)
Benedict C is also so awesome in the movie. He’s just so cool and badass.
    “I am better.”
    “At what?”
    “Everything”.
And then Sulu as captain! And Chekov in Engineering!
    And Spock!
“I am, surprisingly, alive.” I just loved it!
And then when……No, I can’t say anything. I don’t want to spoil it for Scorpio-Ferret. @22- you should most definetly watch it!!

And no, I don’t know about the tribbles. The only connection I can make out between the old and new movies is Spock 🙂 he’s the best.

And named after someone from Deep Space 9? That is so awesome!

  18. I listened to the first four chapters of Leviathan and I have to things to say about it:
    a) Alan Cumming narrating is AWESOME! I love him and Leviathan and Scott and oh! what a good combination! BUT-
    b) Am I the only who can’t take Alek seriously with the prissy German accent Alan gives him? I mean, I love that he’s changing accents for the respective characters (and I will admit that I shamefully read everybody in an American accent when I read the books), but I always thought maybe Alek sounded a bit spoiled (because he’s a prince) and naive, but not prissy. I guess it’s because Alan’s trying to make him sound YOUNG and German (which explains why I’m not bothered by Volger or the other Austrians), but I just didn’t picture my Alek with that voice.

Also, @Star Trek discussion: I haven’t seen Into Darkness. I want to see Into Darkness. I thank everyone who’s refrained from posting spoilers about Into Darkness. (And no, I’m not really familiar with much Star Trek stuff, though I did see the 2009 reboot.)

  19. @24 i think Alek’s voice was a bit prissy too, but not that bad. i kind of liked it a lot actually. although i had always read Alek’s stuff with a hint of prissy, spoiled, uppity-ness.
you should totally watch Star Trek! the reboots were well, reboots. as a general rule (at least in my opinion not trying to offend) remakes and such can’t seem to match the awesomeness of the original. but i have to say in this case Into Darkness does look very amazing too.

  20. IMPORTANT NEWS EVERYBODY!!! TODAY IS THE FIRST (semi)OFFICIAL DEFENESTRATION DAY!!! THE ANNUAL DAY TO THROW THINGS OUT OF WINDOWS (I KID YOU NOT)! JOIN ME IN SPREADING THE WORD!

    AND DEFENESTRATE STUFF!!! 😛 😀

  21. @26 what is this? an official excuse to throw stuff out windows? i’m all for it! this is amazing! *throws textbook out window* didn’t ever use that one anyway 😀

  22. @27 (and everyone): Yeah, pretty much. I thought the fact that there is actually a word in existence that means “to throw out of a window,” it deserved to be celebrated.

May 23rd was picked as the date because it marks the anniversary of the start of the Thirty Years’ War, which was in fact actually sparked by two imperial governors getting thrown out of a third floor window (thus making it the coolest war ever 😀 ). (I’d post links, but I’m afraid that’d make the computer withhold my comment, just look up Defenestration and the Defenestrations of Prague via Wikipedia.)

So yeah, it’s my favorite word. 😀 But seriously, spread the word (FAR), and this could TOTALLY become a legit holiday! The holiday of throwing things out of windows (what could be better?)!

  23. The audio books are AMAZING! Alan Cumming did such a fantastic job, and I’ve listened to them twice.
One question about them: I love the music that plays at the beginning and end of Leviathan. Does anyone know what the song is called, who the composer is, and how I can find a recording of it? Or was it specially composed just for the audio book?

  24. I absolutely love your blog and find nearly all of your post’s to be just what I’m looking
for. Would you offer guest writers to write content in
your case? I wouldn’t mind publishing a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write regarding here. Again, awesome blog!

  25. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a
comment is added I get several e-mails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
    Thanks a lot!
