Okay, so the novels of Leviathan are done. Finished! We will probably have to wait for some major change in medium (movies? comics?) to see more stories from that world.
This is sad, of course, even though we still have the Manual of Aeronautics coming out next August! The Manual will have dozens of pieces of art showing the machines, beasties, uniforms, and equipment of the world of Leviathan. And it’s all in COLOR!
In the meantime, however, I’ve noticed that a few people felt like SOMETHING was missing from the trilogy itself. Like, they needed ONE last illustration of one sort or another for the series to feel totally complete. So Keith and I have decided to create a final piece of art to satisfy your whims. (Yes, we all know that your whims are infinite and will never be satisfied. But we can PRETEND, can’t we?)
We aim to please, after all.
So you will be voting on what this image should be, Keith will be drawing it, and I shall post it here as an early Hanukwanzmas present to you all!
After extensive research into comment threads, Westerforum discussions, and random reviews of Goliath, I have identified four illustrations that the Leviathan trilogy didn’t contain, that you most want to see:
1) Deryn in a dress.
Many of you have expressed a need to see this image, for a certain kind of closure, I suppose. After all, Deryn literally starts out the series by putting on boy’s clothes, so you want to see her come first circle. I doubt she would approve, but Alek would, so we’ll put her in a dress if you want!
2) Alek in a dress.
Because you just want this. Needless to say, Alek wouldn’t approve either, but it would be pretty darn amusing. And Deryn would approve!
3) The Kiss, but a close-up.
There were many complaints that the illustration of a Certain Event at the end of Goliath was from a SLIGHTLY wide angle. Some of you clearly want that image to be shown in close-up. I doubt that either Alek or Deryn would approve of SNOOPING, of course, but it’s not like they don’t do a lot of snooping themselves.
4) Bovril in a dress, or a goatee, or just doing whatever’s funny.
Everyone approves more Bovril, I assume. Including the wee beastie itself.

The kiss. I feel that although we see a lot of the beautiful fanarts on many websites and here on your blog of the two of them together, I think having an official piece with what we’ve known they look like in the entire series will just make the ending all the better.
It’ll definitely give me, and I’m sure many others, closure in a sense that everything ended as they dreamed it to, that they’re going to be okay even after the adventure has ended. Ok, I’m going to be honest for a second.
I really, strongly believe that if we get a bonus picture printed in an actual book it should be cannon.
No Alek in a dress. Very funny thought, lets go make some fanart about it. If y’all want stories and pictures about Lilit and Adella, so make them, enjoy eachothers works, I’m all about it.
Crashing the Bash was amazing, but there is a reason that its not in the ACTUAL story. Lets keep the books legitimately in the story.

Bea @ 20 has the right of this: I see no reason why these options should be mutually exclusive. As Gladys @ 68 noted, though, we’d need a story showing why this was not silly at all but in fact totally plausible. I’m thinking it’s during a mission for the Zoological society that a plot to assassinate Alek is discovered, and Deryn must sneak him away in disguise. With Deryn’s mischievous streak, she knows exactly which disguise would irritate Alek the most–but imagine her dismay when Dr. Barlow suggests they would be most likely to sneak under the bad guys’ surveillance if they both wore dresses! And as for the kiss . . . well heck, who needs a reason to kiss?

I’m thinking, Barlow said Deryn might have to go on missions for the London Zoological Society that involve disguising herself as a girl, right? And Alek is going with them, right?
So it’s not out of the question that they might both be sent on a top secret mission involving them both being disguised as girls, right?
It gives a sense of balance, they both meet as boys and spend the series together as boys and now they’re together as girls.
And it’s a compromise. For even more of a compromise, Bovril (there for information gathering and perspicacious purposes) can look on as they both find they can no longer resist each other and find a private place to kiss passionately, perhaps with Deryn’s bonnet/wig falling off in the process, while Alek’s stays firmly on. :p

Mmm, they are all good ideas…eh…I kinda want to see them all…but if I am to state my opinion, then I’d have to say that I don’t think that seeing any of the characters in dresses will bring any sort of closure. In fact it’d probably create the want for more, only this time it’s Volger in a dress. While seeing Alek in a dress is tempting (very, very, *very* tempting) my vote has to go to the kiss. I feel like that will bring closure, maybe more for me than anyone else, though.
But I have to say…after getting over the initial shock of the kiss from that event, I found the wide angle to be quite appropriate. I can’t have been the only one who liked it like that, can I?

The kiss would be refreshing. I felt a bit lost at the end, as if the story came to a resolution all too quick. I think this is because Mr. Thompson was able to illustrate large sections of a scene in one picture throughout the series, but was limited with that one. Fans would have prefered to see the first kiss on the spine instead, because it was a much more desperate time and represented more of the chapter. The last kiss was quick, and left a person hanging in a very uncomfortable way. I felt it was crammed in there at the last second. A true kiss would show readers their real relationship and commitment to one another, and how they plan to live out their lives. It would make me and others like me see that the love between them wouldn’t be short lived, and Alek’s sacrifice wasn’t in vain. The kiss would console the readers with the fact that the relationship wouldn’t be short lived. This would make Alek’s extreme decision easier to swallow; I was uneasy with it because the books didn’t concentrate on their love life. Most would think that he would get to know her a little better before throwing away his struggles and old life. Their love didn’t seem sound by the time he made up his mind. While the other choices are funny (and I would greatly enjoy them), we can draw that ourselves and be content, whereas the kiss should feel official.

I’d just like to see Deryn and Alek together in their twenties (I need to know they are still going strong) and Deryn not hiding her gender. I complete respect and understand Deryn’s revulsion towards dresses, but it always saddened me that she had so few opportunities to just be herself, completely and fully. Deryn always had to hide part who she was to do what she loved and I didn’t feel that part of the story was resolved. Why can’t Deryn wear her uniform or pants, but look female? I think Deryn just being Deryn with some Alek on the side
would be the ultimate closure.

Here’s why…
1.) Volger in a dress scares me in so many ways.
2.) If we keep feeding Bovril’s ego like this he will end up like Dr. Barlow’s loris.
3.) Alek in a dress would just be humiliating and I don’t want to put him through that social embarassment.
4.) If Lilit and Deryn get a close up kiss, then why shouldn’t Dalek?
5.) Deryn in a dress…meh. I can take it or leave. Girls in pants. Girls in dress(es?). I really don’t care.

I am all for the kiss.
But as long as we can have write-in candidates, I would just like to offer a few suggestions. A group Photo would be cool. Or all the Clankers together, I don’t think I have ever seen them all in one scene together.
Or, a scene featuring Dr. Barlow and Count Volger. And before anyone says anything, it doesn’t have to be romantic. They could simply have a nice sunday brunch in the countryside as friends, and scheme. Going in to Goliath I was hoping for more interaction between those two. But alas, there was none.

I am growing concerned! Very few people have realized that the OBVIOUS answer is to have BOTH OF THEM IN DRESSES WHILE KISSING! Why can’t they wear dresses while they kiss?
Think about it this way: if one of them is already going to be in a dress, why not put a dress on the other too? And why not just have them kiss while they’re at it?
Or – If they’re already going to be kissing, why not have them wear dresses while they do it?

I found a mistake in Behemoth! Chapter 31 is told from Alek’s point of view, and on pg. 342 (paragraph 3) it is narrated that he is sitting beside DERYN!!! When the narration follows Alek, Deryn is always referred to as Dylan-at least before Alek finds out Deryn’s a girl.
(note that this is not something Alek said aloud, but part of the narration).
Has anyone else noticed this, or do I just have a keen eye?

I want to know what happened after Goliath. Maybe you could draw Alek and Deryn in future, possibly 5-10 years later when the war is over? Because I know some people felt that it ended too quickly and not much was told about Alek and Deryn’s life after the Leviathan.
Whatever it is, I want it to be realistic. I think putting certain characters in dresses is kind of pointless and should be left to fan art. Maybe the illustration could be depicting the final chapter of Goliath, picture of what the newspaper article was implying? This is the last piece of art and whatever it is I think it should give us realistic closure, so accurate that it could be put on the final page of Goliath and would stay true to the story.

I actually love dresses from the turn of the century. But I’m not really crazy about Deryn with long hair either. Everyone seems to have it. Not that there is anything wrong with long hair. But short hair is different and cool. So while I am willing to stuff her into a gorgeous period dress if there is a need. I am strongly against her with long hair. And, I don’t need to see Deryn in a dress because I can live out all of my Victorian dress dreams through Barlow & Lilit.

Please do not put Alek in a dress. The picture shouldn’t cause anyone any sort of social embarrassment or cause them to hang shame curtains. A kiss makes the most sense, and would please the majority. You cannot go wrong with a kiss close-up. THIS TRILOGY IS AMAZING.
I am depressed its over, no joke i have this deep gut wrenching soul crushing heart broken emotion that is hard to contain. my mother thought I was in a mood, so its not just me.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! A wedding with Alek having a daft look as he stares at Deryn wearing a dress(with her boots and rigging knife ) but don’t make her look like a ninny! This should take place on the Leviathan as it flies over the London Zoo.
On a side note-please don’t leave this world! I have become addicted(reading= happy), I read Leviathan and Behemoth twice and had to return them to the library(BLISTERS!) and just bought all three.
I shall read them over and over until my teachers and parents decide I need therapy. I thank you good sir for this marvelous work of Literary Art!

Of course the wedding wouldn’t have their ages right as they were when the story ended. They’d be about mid-twenties.
MY argument for it is that you get your kiss without Deryn looking too dudely (because face it, her disguise was /good/ and that close-up kiss at the end would look like two dudes kissing (not that there’s anything wrong with that, except for the fact that she isn’t actually male)), you get her in skirts, you get closure, you get everyone smiling their dopey faces off, and you maybe get some other characters all done up in fancy duds.
PLUS you get to see Deryn in a time period where everyone else is starting to catch up to her. Her short hair won’t be so scandalous, women did in fact wear flapper style dresses to their weddings, which I think she’d prefer (the loose shape eradicated “delicate curves” and implied strength, and the skirt’s short enough that she could still shove her foot up someone’s bum if need be) and personally I think that’d be just swell to see. Roaring Twenties, guys! What’s not to love??
Didn’t mean to write an essay (well, not one here, anyway o.o’). There’s some light reading for that salt kid when she gets back.

Anyway, I DON’T WANT TO SEE A WEDDING. I THINK IT’S TOO FAR INTO THE FUTURE, AND IT DOESN’T INTEREST ME UNLESS I SEE THEIR RELATIONSHIP TOWARDS THE WEDDING.
When I read that “Tu felix Austria nube” line, I was super excited at what it might imply, but I think the wedding thing is too far removed from the Deryn and Alek I know.
Anyway, I’d like to amend my previous choice. It’s now Deryn and Alek in casual early 20s clothing, but with Alek in a kilt (which I think will play well with Deryn’s Scottish background). And a zoomed up kiss, of course.

However much we want, (or don’t want) Scott won’t be writing an epilogue 19 years in the future. He’s not going to tell us how the characters end up, I think he feels that that’s our choice as readers to imagine where they will go. I think the wedding leaves too many futures set in stone, so we should choose the kiss and let fan art give us weddings.
