Is it just me, or are the flash tattoos out in force these days?

This bit of tat-spotting comes to us courtesy of Gabrielle:

Now I know that facial tattoos have been around for millennia, but I’m seeing a lot these days that seem to look very Special Circumstances-ish. Maybe that’s because my Special tats were based on those of the Maori (the people who got to New Zealand 600 years before Europeans did their “discovering” thing). Maybe there’s just been an upsurge in awareness of Maori culture, or maybe it’s all about henna.

Still, I’d be interesting to know how many of you have spotted sort-of flash tattoos in popular culture lately. Anyone besides Gabrielle?

  1. Have you heard of I-Doser? I meant to mention it to you earlier, but it slipped my mind.

    It uses sound waves to cause the effects of prescription and non-prescription drugs. I’ve never tried it, seems really bubbleheaded to me, but I’ve noticed it increasing in popularity (it’s been around for a bit, but wasn’t very known for awhile).

    and first off,
    that is WAY creepy and potentially unsafe.
    second,
    i listened to the sample,
    and it just sounded like a really crappy try at techno!
    so i personally think it’s a scam,
    and if it could work… it’s probably not the best thing for you.
    but really thats just my opinion…

    so basically what i was saying was if there are valentines days in pretty or extra times. then i asked if everyday was valentines since pretties were all in love and pretty and whatnot. lol
    but yeah, i really wonder what holidays they celebrated, if they had any.

    ugh, i hate Valentine’s Day. it’s my theory that everyone does, but the holiday is just a conspiracy to make you think everyone else is enjoying it. stupid hallmark.
    my friend and i made 2 bucks selling Smarties at the library though….

  14. This day only makes me feel LESS loved. without a special someone this day only haunts you. Like a constant reminder. Like “Hey Bran-la, ur single HAHAHAHA! I bet that guy u have a crush on hate u!!!! Ha!!!!” Whoever invited this day, they just make it hard for those who dont have a lover. SOOO MEAN!!!!

    There should be a ‘Solute the singles’ day. WEEEE!!! So all the couples get a day that will haunt them!!!!

  15. HaHaHa!!! Yeah, so for V-day my Dad and I decided to get my Mom one of those personal novels. Ya know, where they put in her name and desgn the story about her. Yeah, she loves it but it’s all mushy and romantic. It’s a total yuck fest,I couldn’t stop cracking up laughing when she read some of it out loud, I mean seriously “And they gazed into eachother’s eyes and knew it was fate that brought them together.” HaHaHa!!! ROFL! Yeah, so my Mom’s all “Why are you laughing?” and I’m like”I didn’t know it was a comedy!” Yeah, I know that’s a bit heartless but HeHeHE!!! Can’t…stop…laughing!

  16. I boycott Valentine’s Day at my school by not wearing pink or red. Today I wore black, head to toe. That’s very not pink or red. I hate Valentine’s Day.

  17. This isn’t exactly popular culture. But there was a cult tv show produced in New Zealand from 1999-2003 called The Tribe. The premise was that all the adults died from an anti-aging virus. The style of the show was very anti-fashion. Face paint and designs were very common.

  24. I wore regular clothes. I had a really bad fight with my guy friend yesterday so today i was totally bummed. I was like crying my heart out last night. and my friend was supporting me a lot today.

  25. hhhhmmmm…i wore all black. cuz im cool like that. but this is the first year ive actally GOTTEN stuff for Vday. i mean, except for those things where everybody has to give everybody else sompthing…like in elem school. but thats different. i got a FAWESOME heart shaped box of chocolate. DOVE chocolate. how fawesome is that?! except i cant eat it. the guy that gave it to me is supposedly crazy about me. but hes just so…Brandon. hes hilarious. but i dont like him. and he spent 15 bucks on it! 15!!! i cant eat it! im ridden with guilt!!! ive been staring at it for an hour and a half!!! but i coodnt give it back to him cuz everybody said it wood hurt his feelings. and he woodnt talk to me all day! woodnt even look at me! Vday sucks. big time.

I didn’t have school today, but yesterday my friends and I felt like being really stupid so we got all decked out in pink and red and hearts and stuff and it was really funny. Cuz everyone’s all, “Why are you guys dressed up for Valentine’s Day?” and we put on shocked faces and were like, “We are not! Why would you say that? It’s AFSAAWBFFE Day!”
    translation: Absolutely Fantastically Super And Awesomely Weird Best Friends For Eternity!
    Yeah so it was fun confusing people.

  27. -stifles giggles- Sorry Lizzy-wa, gosh do I know how that feels. Okay last year this guy asked me to the Valentine’s dance, and I had to make up an excuse to say no cuz I really really didn’t like him. I was just one of the only people that was remotely nice to him cuz he was new. So that’s what I get for being nice,Ugghh! I was so mad at my friend cuz she set me up it was a trap! I was argueing with myself whether or not he’d be stupid enough to buy it if I told him that I was allergic to dancing, but I just told him that I probably wasn’t going to the dance cuz I might be going out of town. Yeah, so I did go anyway but he wasn’t there cuz he got grounded, but stupid me feeling guilty already was just standing there with my friends when, well what do you know, my crush(his best friend) comes over and asks me to dance! TWICE! Yeah, so I did and he said he didn’t ask me to the dance cuz he heard I was going out of town and seriously I felt sooooooooooooo bad. I had a very very guilty conscience.

  28. My take on Valentine’s Day:

    Singles Awareness Day. At my school the orchestra (which I’m in) sells carnations at lunch time. Last year I got none (sob) and this year I got two from my two BFFS. So, yeah. I’m happy. A lot of the kids don’t get any, so I’m thankful. Me and my friends all get those really dorky like, Hello Kitty Valentines Day cards, and give ’em to each other. It’s hilarious reading the things that we write to each other. xD

  29. Haven’t seen too many maori-based tattoos, but they’ve been around, from what I can tell.
    Very neat, though. If it wasn’t permanent, I would totally get some on my face. Look Special.

    My guy friend is saying that i change because i rewad to much now and that all i talk about is books which isnt true. He said that, u no what, wait one sec.

    -you know what just read and go to your reading world like you always do because everyday before any conversation comes is about a book tell las time we talk about something normal not a fight or a bout a book

    -o only 3 year you know that was a long journey but w/e i have to go now think if you really want to push me away and not be my friend

    so ya got a funny story about henna tattoos…. ok so 2 years ago my big bro went to nyc for a class or something and the frist day he’s there he calls us to say i got a real tattoo! and my mom started freaking out….. and she was like going crazy…. (i was on the line w/ the phone on mute) and she was all “where?omg why would u do that?!” and he was like “its on my butt and i got itcause it looks cool, oh ya its a unicorn,” and at that i was glad i had put the phone on mute cause i started cracking up…. then my mom was still freakingout for like 15 mins before he told her it was a henna…… it was sooooooo funny……… you had to be there…….

    So ya…….

    i want a tattoo but i want a rose in the speacials flash tatto disign. like you have the different reds rose in the middle and then the cool flash tattoo disign on top and around it…. ya it would be so fool… i want it on my lower back but at my school everyone is like “tattoos on ur lovr back are Tr*mp stamps”

  36. i dunno, there’s lower-back tattoos, which’re all, i wear painfully low-cut jeans and kind of sluttish. but shoulder-blade and back-of-the-neck tattoos are awesome.

    hmm…somehow, i can find no sympathy for you, Lizzy-wa. mainly because my school is painfully small and lame and i’ve literally never had any kind of interest shown by any guys around here, which honestly, i probably wouldn’t want anyway here in Stoner Central.
    ugh. my total lack of drama manifests itself into drama eventually.

    yeah, i’m gonna go back to spending my Valentine’s day listening to The Strokes and wearing my uberfawesome big Skullcandy headphones and hiding under the hood of my sweatshirt.

  38. Vday sucks. I couldn’t care less. But my friend runs guys away by chasing after them. So I had to MISS LUNCH to stay with her when she cried in the bathroom. I didn’t eat breakfast either.

  41. I just got back from dinner with my family. It was…interesting. Gosh I love my older brother, he makes everything sooooooo much more funny! Seriously, this is a fancy restaurant that we were at and when it was his turn to order he puts on this cheesy British Accent and was all. “Hello Ma’am, I do believe that I’m ready to order.” and she’s all “Okay sir.” and he looks at the menu and goes, “Pffshh.” tosses it aside,putting on a southern accent”I think I’ll go with the Big Mac and extry fries with that ya hear?” before she could say anything else he looks to me and my parents and asks,”Ya’ll ready to order up some good eaten? and by this time I’m doubled over laughing and everyone’s staring and the waitress started hitting on my brother and then he’s all “Excuse my rude behavior, but do you happen to have a Valentine?” Yeah and so my parents looked about to kill him and I couldn’t keep a straight face on, but yeah it’s fun having a 23 year old brother that acts like a three year old. It was much much more fun than I thought it would be!

  54. i just got home from Phantom of the Opera. it was amazing. there were so many special effects, and some really, really talented singers. and i got a ton of new clothes from AE. v-day was actually kinda good for me. i got a *fake* rose from my friend. lol. it smells incredibly good though! and then i got some chocolates from some other friends and 10$ from my grandma and grandpa. and then i got to go to a brodway musical and shopping! 🙂 and then no school tomorrow, but i do have to babysit all day.

    Can you imagine my surprise when I went to your blog and saw Hera! I know her, she lives in the same city as me, I have been to her house and seen her drunk on cocktails with a blue cocktail mustache.
    And then you talk about New Zealand and Maoris, which i am. I dont personally know anyone with their tamoko (face tattoos, usually on the chin) but they are not un-common to see on the street.

  78. Oh God my eyes are killing me! Seriously they’re all bloodshot and hurt really really badly like they’re constantly burning. Oooouuucccchhh!!!   79. ha i did the love is the movement day thing. i have one of those twloha shirts. got it from my boyfriend for christmas. he has like two of them. they’re so cool… but no one here knows what they’re about, so they’re like, ‘why does your shirt say ‘to write love on her arms??’ they get confused. and then i have to explain it all. but valentines day isn’t all that bad. my best friend and i had a great day, even though both our boyfriends live far away. hmm. i think it’d be weird if everyone got these tattoos all of a sudden…

  81. Regarding facial tattoos, I seem to recall a book I read called “Lady of Ch’iao Kuo, Warrior of the South,” by Laurence Yep. It takes place in South China in AD 531, and it’s part of Scholastic’s Royal Diaries series. The main character, Princess Redbird (the Lady of Ch’iao Kuo) is a Hsien of south China, who have prominent facial tattoos (hers was of butterflies and flowers). I haven’t read the book since it came out in 2001, so I don’t really recall if it was henna or a real tattoo, however I believe their purpose was so that ancestors could recognize their relatives when they died. There’s probably more about the tattoos in the book I can’t really remember anymore.   84. I would LOVE one, but my mum said for jobs and shizzle its bad to have tattoo that are visible. Its so lame! However for the next halloween my friend is having a party, and im SO going as a special XD I’ll either ink it on [Ink poisoning much :P] or henna… Whichever way will be FAWESOME 😀

    like, The Last Days in a cool font on the front, maybe with a picture of a stratocaster or something, on a black shirt, and a list of cities on the back (including Bixby, Oklahoma, of course) like it was from a tour……

    it’s becoming my goal to collect as many fictional band t-shirts as is possible. i want a Scorpio Bone one too!

  91. You have winter break now? Thats so weird, mine was like, in december. For Christmas and all…Now i’ve got a week off for half term…

    Then its back for 4 weeks and 2 days, then EASTER! My birthday!! Yeah…

  94. i have midwinter break rite now. for a week. plus i had winter break for two weeks back in december. yepyepyep. except i have to stay at my chinese-speaking grandmas house for three days while the family goes skiing. i like skiing an all, but i always fall and “endanger my life”. so the parentals think it best for me to wait til im older. well @!(&*$#^)!!!! my brother and sister are 9 and 11!!! im 13!!! who cares if i keeps running into trees and spinning in circles and forgetting to get off the chairlifts! i LIKE IT!!!

  96. Haha, i loooove skiing. I used to go every year since i was 2. Stopped a couple of years ago… HAHA. You think you were bad. I was good, but if a slope was too steep of looked icy i would get in a strop at the top and all stressed about it. I hated falling over.

    This one time, i like, sat down on my skiis, then i just went down this slope. I couldnt stop, and i was suddenly like, SHIZZ! That stupid orange plasticy stuff around the edge of a slope is so useless, i was sliding towards the edge of this mountain about to fall, and it didnt do ANYTHING.
    I was in this stuff starting to fall off, when my ski instructor grabbed my arm with all his force and pulled me away from the edge. I seriouslt nearly died. That was one BIIIIIG drop! Those huge trees were everywhere, if the fall didnt kill me hitting them on the way down sure would’ve!

    I’m lucky to be here to be honest… I couldnt thank him enough! 😛
    So yeah. Tell you parents THAT 😛 I think i was, 10 at the time?

    but pplz….i need help. i’m writing a story, and i need to rename two of the characters, cuz they’re all nameless. one girl’s name and one guys name. the girl needs a name that isn’t super-girly and i have a wierd feeling the guy’s name should start with an s, and also a guilty desire to name him vlad.

    i was thinking syd, not sid, but still….ugh. i already have a seth, and a joseph, so i can’t really use joseph and shorten it to seph and i’m rambling.

One year ago right now I was on a stage in Disney World in Florida, performing for all of Tommorrowland to see, but not neccesarily hear, since the Buzz Lightyear ride was louder than the HMS Encore Show Choir. Right now, on the other hand, I am sitting in my freezing cold basement in freezing cold Chicago wearing my Show Choir dress in memory of the event. The aforementioned dress happens to be sparkly red with itchy sequins, sleeveless, and knee-length. *shivers* I think I’ll go change.

MWAHAHA!

    this one in particular of mine (well, honestly i don’t know much about what it’s about cuz i just started it, pretty much all i have is the characters) but they’ve got wierd sort of powers and they all live in this carnival place (thier own personal “freak show”, they call it) and they sort of clash with the kids from town and stuff and have many of their own problems, because they are tres angsty.

Here (in Chicago, Illinois) it’s 10:24, even though none of my clocks are on the right time. My watch is 58 minutes fast, my alarm clock is 3 minutes fast, and my computer clock is 6 hours and 58 minutes slow. Good thing I can keep track of all this!

  194. My little brother is completely possesed and I’ve lost all hope for him to ever be normal. He scares me, but I can kick his a– anyday but I wouldn’t do that cuz I’m not eveil and demented like him.   199. you should watch Lost it’s sooooooo very fawesome! and i don’t really like Harry Potter…i saw the first one i think i was like maybe 9 or 10 maybe i don’t exactly remember for sure but i do remember going and watching it. it was like one of the worst nights of my life. me and my mom went and she fell asleep during the movie and the popcorn we ate was bad so i spent the whole night throwing up and then my ear ate my earing (haha yes i know that sounds weird but everytime i get my ears pierced they swell up really big and engulf the earing. its really gross) yea well so my mom had to yank it out with a pliars which hurt like no other and then ontop of that i was throwing up. it was just not a good night and for some reason i blame harry potter.   204. I Love riding in planes! It’s mostly fun with my Mom because she has this major fear of heights yet she always wants the window seat and it’s extremely funny to watch because she freaks out a lot. Before when we were in the plane at night we were right smack in the middle so we could see the wings of the plane through the window and since it was dark we couldn’t really see much of the wing…besides the flashing light. So I pointed out to my Mom that it looked like lightning and this was so conveniently timed right after the captain said that there was going to be some turbulence because of an oncoming storm. My Mom had a panic attack and was freaking out worse than ever. When I write it or say it, it makes it sound mean but it was funny and I just said it looked like lightning. I was only like nine when that happened and that was my first time on a plane. I soooooooooo can not wait to go to Italy!!!!!!!! How did you like France Serafina-la. i might like France better than Italy cuz I can speak French and I can’t speak Italian. But I think I’ll love them both!

    You think 6 hours on a plane is bad? Try 4 hours in a cramped coach seat then a hour long ferry ride then 16 fricking hours on that same small coach seat! I couldnt sleep at all. I ended up upside down at one point trying to get comfy. All anyone could see was my feet.. I tried sleeping in the isle but was told if i got caught by a teacher i would get into troulb eas i had no seatbelt on the floor. I hated that coach more than my life… Grrrr…

  211. Yeah. One of my ears got pierced on the squiff so when it got caught and came out i couldnt get it back in. So i had to wait ages, then get that one repierced, then the other one got all ucky and infected so i took them b oth out and gave up. Who needs them anyway, they are’t THAT great!

  231. back to the whole freshman bit. I’m a sophmore, but at my school it is AWFUL because your basically a freshman again. We have two high schools, one small one for the freshman, and one huge one for the 10-12 grade. So…being a sophmore, i am the youngest within my school….and the freshman are safe in there own world…

    with the whole freshman thing, my last name is really unique and all my brothers went to the high school im going to go too, so they left a really good impression for me. Plus all the junors and senoirs will know who i am!!! 😀 more power to me! (evil laugh)
    softball is fun, though i have gotten hit in the head to many times to count.
    and all my friends are reading geeks like that. but other wise, i would say were anything but normal.

  234. oh i’m not talking about games. lol. i’m talking about two-a-days which means two practices a day. the first one is at 6 a.m. and last an hour. and it is pure sprinting. like for example the 2nd day of two-a-days last year we had to sprint from one end of a soccer field to the other and then run back. we did that 10 times. and like the first day of two-a-days started i pulled my hamstring and i still had to do all the stuff. it sucked majorly. then after the 6 a.m. sprinting you can go home and relax and then at 3 you have to go to practice again and that practice is 2 hours long and it is hitting/throwing/batting and this last for an entire week and if you survive (haha yes maybe i’m a little dramatic) you have a chance at making one of the teams and based on your performance you get placed in one of the teams. and in my school freshmen, and softmores make a team for sure if they don’t quit before the week is up. and juniors and seniors might make a team and might not.

    and each time we have a game it is a double-header. meaning 2 games back-to-back. and tourneys are like 3 or 4 games in one day depending on if you win or lose. but in the end it’s all very worth going out for it.

  236. Tried softball…wasn’t so good. Soooo now i row! been happy with that for the last 4 years. Rowing is seriously intense (i hate it when people think its uber easy, because its KILLER!) its kinda gross, but we get REALLY bad blisters on our hands from gripping on the oar, and so my hands bleed a lot (i know, i know…too graphic.) And its like uber strength/endurance stuff. its like trying to run a marathon will dragging your own weight, plus some. Anyone out there who hasn’t tried it…give it some thought =] its great to spend time on the water =]

  237. Wow, that sounds really hard, I’d most likely suck at it though. The sports that I’m good at are softball, soccer, and track. I’m like one of the fastest people in my P.E. class, but I’m really short so I take a lot smaller steps or strides or what ever when running so I have to take a lot more strides than the rest of the people who are fast because most of the fast people are like 6 feet tall and are towering ovwer me.

  244. I hate sports, especially ones that involve projectiles hurtling through the air at my head. We’re doing volleyball in gym now, and my team hates my guts since I treat it more like dodgeball. And if I’m not in gym class, you will prevent anyone in my immediate area from throwing a ball – if you know what’s good for you, anyway.

    UGH! Ear piercing… pain-making… I had a terrible experience with that. I got them pierced when I was 11, and the first ear was fine, but the second one the chick screwed up on, and I almost passed out. I did puke. I looked like I was totally drunk! Poor little me…

    Being a Freshman ain’t scary. I’m a Sophomore now, so no worries, lil peeps. But I’m also not in all that stupid drama that goes on. I just stand on the sidelines, pointing and laughing at all the stupid, over-emotional teenagers who can’t reign in their hormones. High School sucks, but has its own funny moments… ^_^

I dance about 15 hours a week and i mean real dance not like the”i take one class a week and im amtureish”which is fine if dance is like your main focus i take pointe ballet modern jazz hip hop tap and kinda lyrical and it really takes muscle plus you have to be pretty cordinated so you use your brain i’d say. When the “jocks” try to bash on dance i get like UBER defensieve and go into like attack mode 😀 dancers need to starting getting more credit!!!!

I played Gladys, and the only reason I didn’t get Peggy (the lead) was because I hadn’t already been in a performance of the show, unlike the girl who did get Peggy. I am now in the One-Act plays, which (unfortunately) are not musicals, but are still fun. I’m the crazy drama director in the play. I get to run around and say things like, “God rest my bleeding ulcer.” It’s fun.

  270. Zane, I’m happy to say that I have absolutely no clue if zombie’s like the taste of fried brain. I sooooooooooooo want horseback riding lessons! Can’t though, grrrrr. In my defense, I’m not a jock like at all. Well just cuz I’m good at softball and running doesn’t mean I am, right? I use my brain all the time, except for times like now when I’m completely brain dead and I’ve got pretty much all A’s. Yeah um… Me + Dancing = Injury. Very uncoordinated person here. I’m working on a book, but I’m only on like page thirty and I’m working on two short stories.

  273. i’m not a jock. i play softball, and i use to play a lot of soccer, not as much anymore though. and i’m a dancer-(jazz.) we have a really awesome recital coming up in May. i’m so excited for it were dancing to the song “I want it all” by Queen. and were gonna be like all attitude.

    and the whole thing about NOT thinking in sports is very NOT true. sports are all about thinking, muscle, skills, cordination, determination, flexibility, and quick reactions. and i’m talking about all sports not just the ones where you have to run and stuff. some sports require different strengths but they ALL require you to think.

    Clarissa-wa-i hate that too. i use to take gymnastics when i was little. lol. i wasn’t too good at it though. i would always pull my arm out of socket on that one bar in the air where you have to like swing and stuff. and i fell off the balance beam a lot too. lol.

Over the summer i did a camp and we did High school musical (shoot me now) but i was gabriella. I enjoy being part of the ensemble more for school things though…cuz then i have more time to be with my friends and understudy when needed.

    Gymnastics….i have respect for those people! I did a split like a month ago…and i like died. i haven’t been able to do it since…haha. Plus you need super coordination (that of which i don’t have) so…yea. thumbs up to the bendy people =P

But I had practically no voice when I tried out, so I was lucky to make it in in the first place. But they were glad they’d taken me, since I was one of the oldest people in the cast and I helped keep order backstage. I also did most girls’ makeup for them. I am 13, and most of the cast was about 10.

  411. yep retainers are a pain. i went this morning to get the braces taken off and 1 nonpermanet but nonremvoable retainer put in and then i went back at 5 and they were just suppose to give me my clear retainer but instead the my ortho was like “You still have one slightly crocked tooth that we missed before and its really not in the way and isn’t really causing any trouble but i would still like to get it straight.” the tooth is in the very back of my mouth, second to last tooth, you can’t even tell that it’s not perfectly staight and he still wants to fix it! grr… everytime they tell me i’m gonna be done they change their minds and say well acutally we could fix this. it’s a conspiracy! they just don’t want to let me go. so i go back thursday and they put another wire and some type of spacers behind my bottom row of teeth. much suckish. but at least it won’t be in the front. (and i wouldn’t be so upset about this if i hadn’t already had braces on, retainer, braces back on, and now another retainer, but when you’ve dealt with this stuff since third grade (i’m now in 9th grade) it starts to make you a little crazy!)
