Scare-a-Thon Revealed!

A few days ago, I got an email from Lauren Myracle, author of the TTYL series and a very scary horror novel called Bliss. It was a challenge . . .
to a Scare-a-thon!

Now, a Scare-a-thon is possibly the scariest thing you can be challenged to, at least in modern times. To survive it, you must face your greatest fear, and then blog it.

If you succeed, you’ll have learned something about yourself, something rich and squishy from your subconscious. But on the other hand, you could die of fear!

So don’t try this at home.

Also challenged were M.T. Anderson, Holly Black, Libba Bray, Meg Cabot, Cassandra Clare, Melissa De La Cruz, John Green, Shannon Hale, Maureen Johnson, Stephenie Meyer, Kirsten Miller, Sarah Mlynowski. I link to some other Scare-a-thon entries below, and will update them as more appear on the interwebs.

Ahhhhhhh!

Okay, not so much scary as disgusting. But it was scary to me.

As for my fellow Scare-a-thon members, I dare you to watch this scarifying video entry from Shannon Hale, in the spirit of Blair Witch Project.

And here’s Meg Cabot’s blog entry, for all you fairy-phobes.

Not to be outdone, Lauren herself met the challenge by learning the dance to “Thriller”.

Finally, here’s where we discover that Melissa de la Cruz is afraid of . . . dentistry!

  5. oh my god, i was in stitches! that was disgusting scott-sama! almost as bad as this one time at girl scout camp where we mixed water, soda, orange juice, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, and tobasco into one pitcher and dared some girl to drink it.

    but that can’t have been as bad as *Grandma Soap* dun dun dunnnn.

    the best part was your lack of any emotion or facial expression throughout the whole thing. and the camera guy cracking up.

    i hope you weren’t traumatized *too* badly.

    Lauren myracle is my (second) favorite YA author ever. 😉

  9. I’m sorry, but THAT WAS REALLY FUNNY!!!!!!!!! I think my favorite scare-a-thon things were Shannon Hale and Scott Westerfeld. And of course, Lauren Myracles Thriller dance. I think Kirtsen Miller and Meg Cabot wimped out and lied about their fears to get off easy (eggs and fairies?!?! come on!)

    Almost forgot, I joined NaNoWriMo! I haven’t started writing yet because I’m torn between two books. Help! They’re both based in the future and the stories are similar because the two series they are apart of are connected, but I can’t decide which one to start with!
    I’m leaning more toward the two-part series instead of the three-part prequel series… even though I thought of the three-part series first. Hmm? Decisions, decisions…

  12. Alright, that made me legitimately crack up.
    Ummm, not that your deepest fears are funny or anything…

    I loved the narration though, especially the part about the not-so-delightful Turkish Delight.
    Then again, because I associate it mostly with Narnia, I’ve always found it rather sinister. I’ve no idea why I just tried three times to put a ‘y’ in the word sinister (I just did it again). Maybe I was thinking of synesthaesia.

  13. I too had a traumatic experience with granny soap. Hotel granny soap. *gag*
    I must have been 6. It smelled tantilizingly of cinnamon and was shaped like a starfish. It was even sitting in its own little, white, Reese’s style paper cup. I didn’t bite it, per se. But it was in my mouth long enough for me to realize it wasn’t cinnamon candy.
    Strangely, I still enjoy cinnamon candy and fancy soap.

    I think I’m very fortunate that I’ve never eaten soap. Eating that didn’t look very fun.

  28. There have been fancy shell shaped soaps in my parents bathroom for as long as I can remember. Luckily, I’ve never tried to take a bite out of one. And was the chewing really necessary?

Of course, yours will so totally win (so far… We’ll have to see about the other authors!). Good job on the granny soap. Hope Justine didn’t get sprayed too badly =D

  59. I HAVE FINISHED TYPING MY SHORT STORY!!! (18 pages long, just in case you’re curious….but it’s double-spaced….lol). Yeah. Now I get to go eat supper while editing it to death!!! fun!

  65. lol…one of my friends just pointed out exactly how morbid my story is….the last line is “He whispered the words ‘I love you’ to Ana’s body and plunged the knife through his heart, with Ana’s dried blood still on it.”….lol….I just finished editing it…now I get to go back a edit it AGAIN!!!! fun, eh? the best part is that it’s due tomorrow! yeps. Also, I know that I can’t get 100% on it cuz it’s too long…as in, 9 times too long….nice, eh? I just couldn’t write a “short” story….

    I tried to write one once, and I had written 11 pages, and was still on the beginning of my flow chart thing. haha. we were supposed to keep it under 20 pages. ehem….

  72. lol….we had to keep it to FOUR!!!! yeah. didn’t work out so great. it’s 18. then we had to write a two page reflection. yeah, mine’s three. and that’s the short version. whatever. it’s done now. my teacher’s gonna think that i’m a retard who doesn’t follow directions. i already know that i’m a weirdo who doesn’t follow directions that make me hold back my imagination. at this point, my teacher should just be glad that i didn’t write a 100 page novel. because i totally would have. just i didn’t have the time.

  75. i didnt get to c the moive yet, but it sounds awesome!! im gonna watch it at school tomorow…but great job scott-la!! i totally wasnt expectin u to eat sops 4 real!! thats soooo gross, but funny also. one time i was dared to jump off a part of my school building- it was like 2 stories or something like that-and i did it bcz, i had nothing better to do, and i can NEVER turn down a dare (well…almost never), and i take mixed martial arts, so it really wasnt that bad. it was fn actually, and when i ran around the building to get back upstairs everyone thought i had died. it was really funny. but i totally screwed it up cuz i ws still shaking like 1/2 hr later. lol.

  113. First of all, this song is filled with grammatical and spelling errors. Second of all, what’s with the cussing? “Global warming” is not an issue that we should be worry about. Like Abigial-wa said, temperatures WILL go down their HALF DEGREE! Our leader is just doing his job as best as possible. Not saying that I agree with everything he says, but that’s no reason to start hating.

  117. Well, this is my view: 1- I don’t agree with people who rag on the President, because What would you guys do if you were in his situation? There’s not a whole lot that could actually be done. He’s just trying to do his job. That’s my opinion, but I totally got what you meant in the song. I didn’t find it offensive.
    2- Oh yes, and so polution, oil, smog, greenhouse gases have nothing to do with global warming? Excuse me, but where the hell have you people been? There’s nothing natural about it, it’s all the crap that we put into the earth. You can just believe that the temperature will go back down by itself, but that my friend is a little thing called denial. Who cares if it’s just a half a degree??? It adds up. Quickly. And what the heck. If it’s not an issue that we have to worry about, who will? Are we gonna rely on somebody else always? Say, oh, someone else will take care of it. I don’t have to do anything? What if everybody thought that way? Nothing would get finished or resolved. I, for one, would rather make a difference instead of just sitting around and waiting for it to all work out by itself. Cuz, sorry to say this, but that’s not gonna happen.

    Sorry if I offended anybody, but I just so happen to be a major tree hugger. I feel really strongly about these matters.
    I still think you did a great job on that song though, I like it.

  118. That was a first draft?!?! Wow! If any of my first drafts looked like that, I would have been held back three grades. Typing with one hand is no excuse for having numerous mistakes. There IS such thing as a backspace button and proof reading. I never said you cussed MULTIPLE times. I looked back and I never found a sentence that said “What’s with all those cuss words?” Also, genocide doesn’t happen very often…if you’ve been sleeping through history. The whole “warming” of the earth is NATURAL. The icebergs melt because it’s NATURAL. I repeat, NATURAL.
    Other than the few things I disagree on, you’ve got a nice song there.

    i don’t believe that the earth is a fragile thing. i do believe that we should not pollute (trust me, people called me trash girl for a while cause i was picking up all sorts of litter at a camp) i’m all for stopping greenhouse gasses but i don’t believe it’s killing the ozone layer. i do think it could potentially harm the air we breathe to the point of serious health concerns but only if the amount we have now was multiplied a lot.
    God is loving. he knows we’re human. he’ll take care of us.

Tally&Zane: THANK U!!! u totally got wat i was saying. i know how the president feels. all that pressure sucks majorly. but i wasn’t talking about just the president coz other heads of countries might be liars i mean everyone lies sometimes (another point i have in a different song) it’s just that if an important leader lies it effects everyone. and global warming…U GET WHERE I WAS GOINING WITH THAT TOO!!!   145. I am so behind on my NaNoWriMo book! I just started editing my other book today because I hit a deadend with my NaNo. I’m only 1,004 words in and I’m thinking of starting over. I know it’s not supposed to be perfect, it’s just supposed to be 50,000 words, but I’M A PERFECTIONIST!!! Also, every time I think about NaNo, I just want to go through all the forums and find a good thread to follow… then I do that instead of writing and the site takes forever to load, so I end up wasting more time.

    I’m thinking of starting a thread for procrastinators.

  156. i just started my NaNoWriMo today…only 1194 words in…..whatever…..the suckish part is that my mom is counting working on it as my ‘computer time’….of which i only get an hour and a half of each day…..so now i’m gonna have to come to an agreement with her so that i can have MORE time on the computer…kinda like i did when i was recording my honor band audition….the kind of “if all your homework is done and your room is clean and you don’t make a mess” agreement to gain an hour or so. unfortunately, my mom officially doesn’t trust me about my homework anymore cuz i waited til the last day to do my social studies project which i will probably do really well on making my mom take back all that she said about my procastionating being bad. cuz the the fact is, i can write an essay in my sleep, so there really is no point in writing one until the night before so that you can put all of your ideas up til that point into the essay. but does my mom understand that? nope. of course, this would be different if it was an english class thing that i didn’t do immidatly, cuz it JUST SO HAPPENS that i’m failing (76%) Social Studies like EVERY STINKIN OTHER KID IN MY CLASS. yeah. what does my mom expect? me do well in my WORST SUBJECT even though i’ve got the TOUGHIST TEACHER IMAGINABLE and my mark is actually ABOVE the class average? gosh. of course, it doesn’t matter that i’ve got one of the highest marks out of EVERYONE in math and that my short story for english class was probably the BEST of all of them or that i’m doing triathlon training AS WELL AS doing all sorts of auditions for things? yeah. so naturally i’m not gonna be able to get every assignment in a week early. okay. now i’m gonna stop ranting (i know, me? stop ranting? it’s a stretch) and go back to working on NaNoWriMo………..i still haven’t come up with a title for it……..whatever…..i’m sure that once i’m all hyped up on coffee and phone my friend late in the evening asking for a title…..well, that didn’t work well last time cuz my friend jokingly asked me if i was drunk (apparently it sounded that way cuz of the coffee….which i really shouldn’t of had) anyways, i’ll just hope that tonight i shall get an idea for a title…..

Also, I love cats and books and I’m christian (catholic to be exact) and obviously my name is Emily. So yeah, I need some help. I don’t exactly like my current username, acekittycatkitty, since I used it for a game called VMK and now the “ace” at the beginning bugs me. But “kittycatkitty” just sounds stupid.

She had to get one of them removed though…and they wouldn’t let her keep it…darn…Lmao, it’s true though. That totally sucks! My friend(aka the clumsiest person in the world) sprained her foot/ankle/I’m not really sure what it was but it’s that thing that’s connected to your leg that *most* people walk on, and she ended up pulling some tendons and doing damage to the ligaments and muscles and stuff and had to go to physical therapy.   194. okay, so i’ve got a LOT to say…firstly, I got into the chorus of the musical (which is a big deal at my school) and so now I offically have a life (in other words, I don’t have to go home from school to hang out alone in my bedroom reading books and eating halloween candy…instead, I can go to rehersal and THEN come home a do that). So I’m pretty excited ’bout that. Also, today at school my friend had to go to the guidence counsoler over “organization issues”…apparently she’s practically failing half her subjects dispite the fact that she’s a genius…I mean, seriously, she’s smarter than me. Except that like a lot of geniuses, she’s very unorganized (i find with geniuses is that they are either perfectionist organization freaks or they are incapable to think if things are organized) anyways, so had to get help from the guidence counsoler cuz she’s failing social studies and not in the way that i am. I mean, she was really close to having a letter sent home to her parents….and not just about Social Studies, about English too….so yeah…and this is just because she hasn’t handed anything in ANY of her assignments cuz she’s just that unorganized. I mean, she’s more unorganized than me…which is saying something considering that my locker explodes on me (with books of course) whenever I open it….i’m actually fairly well known at school as “the girl who kept an entire book series in her locker”…yeah…of course, they got it wrong, I actually had THREE complete book serieses in my locker, but whatever…..my record for the most books i’ve had in my locker at one time was 26, i think….yeah….so anyways, when my friend told me she had to see the guidence counsoler, one of my other friends overheard and said, “what the heck did you do that got you into the guidence counsoler’s officer faster than Andrea?”yeah…according to my friends, I desperatly need counsoling for “mental reasons”. Yeah….whenever they see the words “Human brain” on a piece of paper that I’m working on, they’ll say “……Andrea? You didn’t switch your brother’s brain with your pet guinea pig’s, right?” to which I often reply with something like, “Oh my gosh, did I not tell you? That is SO last month.” then they’ll look at me contemplating if I’m serious knowing that I’m not (but apparently I’m a pretty good actress) and they’ll play along and say “what’s this month then?” to which I will respond with something along the lines of “remember last year when I collected DNA samples from everyone? I’m finally gonna use ’em” Yeah. It’s things like this that make my friends think that I’m slightly weird….or when I say something really odd….lol…so apparently that’s supposed to equal a trip to the guidence counsoler….I seriously don’t need to go to a guidence counsoler, I’m just as sane as anyone else.

  229. TYC Leader: There are going to be twelve books in the Cherub series, though only the first six were published in the US. It is so unfair. That’s one of the major drawbacks to reading mostly British authors. The other is that they hardly ever tour anywhere but England meaning you miss all the books signings.

  242. lol…nice. my friend is trying to get me to audition for the provincial honor choir….yeah…..i don’t think that i have time to go through another audition process….but she wants me to audition….so that means that i might….

  243. yeah….the applications have to be in by tomorrow….it’s not gonna happen….so i’ll just focus on my honor band audition…..still deciding on which instrument to audition on……clarinet or oboe…..i’m pretty sure you can’t audition on alto recorder, lol….yeah…i’m pretty sure i’ll audition on clarinet and i’m gonna get myself a $100 mouthpiece, a $50 ligature cuz i’ve got those on my Christmas list….and i really want them to better my chances of getting into the honor band….my teacher came up to me on friday during jazz band and was all “what type of mouthpiece do you play on?” so I said “the one that came with my clarinet.” then he let me try his and it was AMAZING….then i asked “what type of mouth piece is it?” and he told me the type (i don’t remember it now) and then he went on about ligatures….yeah….plus he said i should be using strength 3.5 reeds…not 3 (which i only JUST moved up to). yeah. so i’m getting all obsessive about honor band now….

Lady Dahlia: ya i know it has been a while since they came out with something new (American Idiot was their last album in 2004 so four years later is a long time) TYC: ok ur the second person to ask and u actually got it. Tally Youngblood Cult/Club either way it works. sounds extreme but it’s really just a rebellion group i wanna start. woo hoo!!! (no i’m not crazy just obsessed…ya….hehe)

    ugh…i wasn’t in the dedication coz i started posting on this blog AFTER all those post about BtB were done with. i read those posts but didn’t say anything (mostly coz i was trying to think of a kick a** name to post under. but i think i accomplished that)

    so i’m supposed to be doing homework right now coz i have a big a** pile of it coz i was out of school for 2 weeks (sucks i know) but i don’t feel like it coz i am sooooooooooooooooo pissed right now coz my mom got pissed at me for having a shi**y attitude at church (there are so many things that i don’t like about going to church and there have been many arguments between my parents and me about that.) so i don’t know how many of u are Catholic but i am. so today during church during the homily this guy gets up to talk about stewardship (which, if u don’t know, is like charity and stuff like that) well i hate in church when people get up to talk about finacial crap coz i just don’t think that should be talked about during Mass maybe before or after but not during. ugh! it just pisses me off soooooooooooo much. also my sister and i were “fighting” (we weren’t really she was just tugging on my shirt on the side where my shoulder hurts so i told her to stop and my mom gets mad!! i don’t understand) so on the way home she like blows up on my about my attitude and i said that i don’t care (well coz i really don’t) and she’s like “right all u care about is Green Day…”and i didn’t let her finish after that coz i knew where it was going (apparently my obsession with Green Day and reading Scott Westerfeld’s books is bad coz my parents always rag on me for that. ha! well it’s their fault that i read so much and listen to music. it’s so i don’t have to listen or think about the suckiness of my life) so i got i screamed “SHUT UP!” and jumped out of the car and walked away. so i was at the park cooling down (we were picking up my dog at my dad’s) and my sister had gotten my dog and wat do my mom and sister do? THEY LEAVE ME AT THE PARK! ALONE! so i got upset about this but i won’t let it show. then they came back and got me. we came home, had lunch, and now they left for my sister’s basketball scrimage without saying good bye (i might add) i haven’t talked to either one of them since. it sucks! i hate having my mom mad at me (other people i like getting mad, but not my mom)
    ok i’m done ranting. just had blow that steam off.

  245. TYC Leader: Okay, so that sounds like a crappy day. I couldn’t go to church today cuz i barfed yesterday (darn chinese food) and I’m assuming that barfing in the middle of a church service would be a very bad thing, not to mention embarrasing. My mom gets mad at me a lot. For example, today we had company over for brunch and my mom kept on telling me to put my book away and be social. So I do what she asks. Guess what? Nobody talked to me. It’s like I’m invisible until I do something wrong. So now I’m kinda sneaking out of talking to people in order to use the computer (soon I might just go downstairs to my room and see if anyone notices) so yeah. A few days ago my mom was mad at me for not doing my social studies project. Yeah. I did it the night before, got 100%, plus some got read outloud to the class cuz it was just that good. Yeah. It totally surprised my mom and she was almost upset that I had done so well on the assignment that she had yelled at me about (yeah…there were tears on my part) and I think she was really hoping for an “i told you so” but instead I got to say “i told you so” to her. Yeah. My parents rant about my obsession with the computer. I dont’ have an obsession. I honestly don’t. Then they’ll rant on about how annoying my instruments are and that I should only stick with one. To which I usually say “I specialize in nonspecialization.” to which they say “huh?” and I explain “it takes talent to be able to play a bunch of different instruments and i’ll get bored if i just play clarinet all my life” to which they say “then could you at least pick a quiet one next time?” to which I’ll usually respond “be glad i don’t play flute or trumpet”. That usually ends those conversations. Okay, now I need to go study for a social studies test (tomorrow) cuz if I don’t, I shall surely fail. And then my mom would get HER “I told you so”. So right now, I’ll be in the clear so long as my social studies mark is above 80%. Okay. *slowly walks away*

Andrea-la: hahaha!! that sucks that they don’t notice u. and i’m like u…i wait till the last minute to do EVERYTHING. which is not smart, and yet i continue to do it…dunno why. ya it’s a crappy day here but i’m slowly getting over it(emphasis on slowly) it usually takes me a while to get over things i don’t know why.

  247. lol…they honestly didn’t notice me…i just walked back to the table for dessert as though i hadn’t even left….it was mega-funny…then i started playing oboe and they’re all “there she goes on her clarinet again.” and then the family who we had over, well they kid was crying so their dad takes them and is all “isn’t that like what squidward from spongebob plays?” and I’m all “no, this is an oboe. my clarinet is downstairs.” it was mega-funny….they didn’t even know that clarinets had a reed…lol…..and i don’t ALWAYS wait til the last minute, only for things that i really don’t wanna do…such as social studies homework….and i have yet to study for the test tomorrow…..yeah…..

Although I have to wonder what was shoved up Dawn’s butt, the third grade part was more than a tad rude, and if global warming is “NATURAL,” than I’m President Bush…..

  260. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
