As you may remember, I recently edited a collection of essays about the Uglies series, called Mind-Rain. We got a bunch of YA authors together and asked them questions like, “Is Shay the real hero of the Uglies series?” “Who was the better boyfriend for Tally: David or Zane?” and “How can we prevent prettyheaded behavior in our own world?”

The answers are thought-provoking and will re-wire your brain!

Mind-Rain doesn’t come out until June 2, but Teen-Libris (the publishers) are having a contest right now. Enter now to win a copy of Mind-Rain AND Robin Wasserman’s excellent book, Skinned. You may remember Robin as a guest blogger here, and from this IMterview with her I did last September.

  7. I really want to get Mind Rain. it seems really cool to hear what other people have to say about the book because nobody i know has read the book and when i recommend the Uglies series to them they never read it! So i am dieing to see how other people viewed the book.

  8. Heres a quick answer (in my opinion): Shay was just a disposable pawn in the game of “operation” if you will. She lewered Tally into comming to the smoke, obviously brain missing about specials, and then betrays her. Acts Phycotic to try to get her to respect her as a pretty? to find a new cure? No one really knows what she was doing when she cut herself in “Pretties” while tally was lying in the mud. she was just, most likely, drunk, mad, jealous, and wants to get back at tally in the only way her non-sober mind can.
    The other opinion- Zane is OBVIOUSLY the better boyfriend in the story. Even after all David did for tally, she had to do what she had to do. she never ment to destroy the smoke. In fact, I think Maddy just brain washed him into thinking that tally was a mean, destructive, evil pretty, and made him think that is what all the rest of the pretties were too. David betrayed Tally, sticking to his mother’s evil words. Zane stuck by Tally and vice-versa. Why would anyone think that Shay would be the HERO? she was only Bait. The argument between David and Zane was Negotionable, but it comes out to a final conclusion. They drifted apart and david is mind washed. Thats it.

  9. …That Mind-Rain cover is by far the most utterly creepy piece of artwork I’ve ever seen, Scott. Like, more scary-making than the freaky pretty-symmetry examples of those little girls in that beauty contest you posted so long ago, more frightening than the first time Shay ever cut in Pretties.

    And yet…so awesome. It’s like an allusion to Zombie-Barbie, in a surged-up, Goosebumps sort of take on things.

    Since things seem to be going quickly into discussion mode, I’ll get on the bandwagon and spread my own opinions mostly to my favorite question first listed here:

    Well, on the website, the question is listed as “WHY is Shay considered the real hero of the Uglies series?” Meaning that she really is. Yes, all you Shay-haters, she really is.

    Hey, I like Shay. As far as the females go, she’s definitely my favorite character. Possibly my favorite out of all of them, no matter how bubbly Zane is (Scott, every character I like dies when it comes to the male species. D: I need to stop liking characters, oh cruel author.). That’s not to say I don’t like Tally-wa either; on the contrary, Tally is a far more independent, heroic, and believable character than the utterly bogus Bella Swan of Smeyers’ barf-making icky vampire sickly sweetness. Tally has mistakes, unlike Pretty-Perfect Bella, which means that she both appeals to me and infuriates me.

    Shay is open-minded, feels hurt and betrayed more often and rightfully so. Her mistakes are out in the open and she strives to conquer the same issues Tally faces usually sooner and on a more direct route. She’s more closely linked, in my mind, with the Rusties due to some of her crazy stunts than Tally herself is, making it easier for me to picture things from her point of view. She can be selfish, but so can Tally. Shay’s operatons are thrown upon her first, and every single one of them is nonconsensual.

    Speaking as a girl used to having friends backstab her and someone who loves keeping her own mind, I suppose this is why I love Shay as a whole. She comes alive to me, from the first time she taught Tally the usefulness of using your dorm jacket as a hoversail, to when she finally determines fighting isn’t worth the time–that all she and Tally should do from then on is attempt to stay friends.

    She’s not a pawn, but she was used like one. I would say she got back pretty evenly at Dr. Cable and the rest of the unfair antagonists of the series by helping Diego with the rest of the Cutters in the end.

    And hey, that Armory scene and her obvious love of nanos? I’m sorry to all of you who dislike Shay, but she’s just kick-ass. Really, she is. Maybe it doesn’t matter who’s the hero entirely. Tally and Shay both have their moments of brilliance. Even Aya is the hero of her own story, though I far prefer the first draft with Hiro. See? The title is expendable either way.

    …Speaking of hoversail-dorm jackets, Scott, I am curious. What would you say to the style of hoverboards used in the animated Disney film Treasure Planet?

  12. Aaah! I started reading the excerpt. And then I stopped. I actually managed to stop. Because I want this when it is beautiful and in my hands and to read it then. And also because I read Genesis by Bernard Beckett in two hours tonight, which is not a good idea unless you want psychological vertigo that DOESN’T go away. So I note above intelligent comments about Shay as a character and I wish I could join discussion but can’t now.

    That said. For the record. Shay is the hero of the series. You could almost see the series as unconventionally written from a secondary character’s POV. She has always fascinated me, been the character I analyze most and identify with most.

    Also Scott’s intro to that essay, he’s not joking. When he was in Toronto he said he’s considered writing the book(s?) from Shay’s POV. I HIGHLY encourage this.

  15. Okay, I don’t think that I really need to state this, but, obviously, I’m with Shay! I’ve allways loved her, and I play Shay in the movie, so even more reason why I should love her…. I never thought I looked like her until my friend Savanna, who’s playing Tally, told me so…. btw, we have GAZZILIONS of AWSOME bloopers to post soon, so watch for that!

    uhm… I read the excerpt and was a little, but not really, surprised so many hands went up dissin Shay.

    ‘Cause well… I am Shay in so many ways and every way. Incredibly like her it’s insane. I gave the first book to my little brother and he pointed it out how I’m like Shay…

    I was defensive at first about it, because Tally is my favourite character… but then I realized she is my favourite because I am so like Shay that I’d be Best Friends For Ever and Never with Tally…

    I thought first, no, I’m more like Tally… but then I realized I was like Tally in the ways her and Shay were similar. That was another reason they clashed, they were alike… but there was only room for one protagonist…

    I think Shay definitely did push Tally, and the pushing is what made Tally who she is, but I don’t think it’s about that. It’s how Tally dealt with how she got changed and generally, she handed it well.

    And I like what Julie-wa said, Best friends for ever and Never. That is righteous sounding too.

When I was reading the excerpt, my mind started to drift into metaphysical thoughts (as it often does…), and then it hit me: The Rana/H_rd story in Risen Empire/ Killing of World is basically Uglies before Uglies existed. Except the surgery in RE/KoW turns you into a secretive minimalist, rather than a mindless consumer.

  28. Personally, I think I’m like Tally (*can hear friends laughing*) and I forgot the reason, but I think it has to do with in Pretties it’s like

    “Tally sighed. Sometimes it seemed as if her life was a series of falls from ever greater heights.”

    or something close. And there was something else…But there are Tally’s of the world and there are Shays…

    Also, I think David and Zane were good for Tally in different ways, but ttfn cause I gotta go see STAR TREK!!!

  30. i actually think zane waz better for her then david. i had alot of reason and fergot half of them. lolz. thats why i waz so paralized when he was killed off………………or died. david promised her he would bring the pills and he didnt and zane waz there to help her.

  35. Jay-Wa: I thought it was pretty good. Not Scott’s best work, but when you compare things to the Uglies series, everything pales in comparison.

    But, I can’t help but notice that in the excerpt, the author mispelled 1337 into ‘733t’ (that translate into teet). Ack… like adults trying to use slang, eh?

  40. Yeah, I’m definitely a Shay fan. Yes, she was used as a pawn in the story….often by Tally! (I can’t stand Tally). I can’t say it as well as the rest of you can, but I think that she is, in some ways, the real hero of the story. Tally left Shay soooo many times, and Shay left Tally a bit, too — but think about it! Tally stole David, Tally got to stay normal longer, Tally SAVES everyone for Chrissakes…. Shay’s the person (I can sympathize) who wants to do the right thing but is continuously living under Tally’s shadow.

    My generic response to the David/Zane question is David, but I don’t really care. Zane was pretty and helpful, but I always felt like Tally was cheating on David, so I felt sorry for David and wanted her to go back to him, even though I didn’t like how HE kind of kicked dear ole Shay in the face by liking Tally. That part at the end of Extras with he and tally, however, was lovely. 🙂

  44. Alwyn: I dont think she was used BY tally, more by…oh wait…Yeah she was used by Tally, but she was only trying to to it so she could live “happily ever after” w/ peris! I mean, she didnt even know shay that long. Thats why she did it! she made a promise to Peris saying that Him someday! remember that!

  46. I seem to have the same fairy, Bethany-la. I’ve entered to win almost every week on Free Book Friday Teens for a couple months now (I think), and I still haven’t won.

    Hehe, that reminds me of something kind of funny/sad. A while ago they were giving away Need by Carrie Jones (I think that’s her name). Anyway, about a month after that giveaway they had to announce a new winner for one copy because the first person didn’t claim it. And yesterday they had to announce a third winner for that copy because the second person didn’t claim it either. Isn’t that kind of sad?

    I do think in ways Shay was a hero, but I refuse to give up my love for Tally! In my mind, Tally will always be the hero of the series, regardless of what I will read in Mind-Rain.

  48. Awsome, Scott-la! though the cover is a LITTLE creepy… Shay’s actually my favorite character, at least in the beginning of uglies. She’s also a pretty cool pretty, but a little weird as a special. And she Tally can never get along… 🙁 … Shay started the whole story, so without her the story would pretty much be:

    Tally goes to a party. Tally sets off some fire works. Tally stays up late. Tally gets a hangover.

    You get the idea. Though shay started it all, the whole story is based around Tally, so you can’t really argue that Shay is the main character.

    wow. That was a kinda specific analysis of Uglies. I surprise myself.

  53. uhm, to all of u Shay haters( ESPECIALLY ANT-LA) i think that you should maybe think a little more about this. SAHY is the one that got Tally into being a more tricky ugly, SHAY is the one that encouraged her into being a crim, SHAY is the one that says( and i directly quote)
    Tally: ” And you’d really do that for Zane?”
    Shay: “For you, Tally-wa”
    pg 95 Specials.
    then SHAY is the one that comes up with the plan to make Zane Special, SHAY is the one that helps Tally stay icy, SHAY is the one that RESCUES tally from being despecialized in Diego, and Shay has always come back for Tally, no matter how much tally is a total ASS to her, as she says on page 266 of Specials:
    I hate you sometimes, Tally. Like I’ve never hated anyone else before. Maybe that’s why I keep coming back for you.”
    And, quite simply, without SHAY, The whole story would be nothing. Tally would have been a bubblehead.

    I love the series I have all of the books,
    But one thing, to Pony-la
    I agree with most of your argues but,
    isn’t it bad that shay wanted to make zane a special..
    because thats what finally killed him right?
    Ant-la I don’t really agree with team Tally but I seriously think neither could be the main character, although since it centered around Tally it seems the more obvious choice, although it feels as though Shay made the bigger decisions Tally still filled in all the spaces. Like Shay would make the line for Tally to write on :).
    But Ani-la is right, although Shay started it, it’s centered around Tally, I mean neither could be a main character without the other.
    And in Extras tally and shay team up to help Aya 😉
    but, of course it wasn’t purely to help Aya.

    If the movie does come out, of course it won’t be as great as the books but i will SOOOO look forward to it, they should do a movie for each book so they won’t cram it all together, and then they can leave room if Scott decides to add another addition to the series *excited* 😀

    Oh and I agree with Alwyn, the end of Extras Tally and David, but she still hasn’t kissed anyone since the death of Zane though. But for me im stuck a bit towards Zane, since i happened to accidentally read pretties before uglies then back to specials then extras. Also since David sort of betrayed Shay-la but Frizz sort of reminded me of Zane, like they had some great points but just couldn’t really be as helpful as David, and they sort of dragged the girls back a bit, I mean it felt like the girls were the ones to take care of them. But they were both very smart.
    I sort of agree with Ant-la on David though, because he did end up sticking with his mother, although it was also due to Tally calling him ugly at the end, he really wanted her to come and he probably was quite jealous of Zane, he did understand that they had to leave Zane because it wasn’t possible to take him with them without getting caught in the end. But what else could David do, if Tally wouldn’t budge, and if David got caught bad things would happen to him.

  57. I completely forgot until just a moment ago, that Zane doesn’t die until specials right? And its soo sad, because when Tally is a special she can’t stand Zane..

    Pony-la: To your direct quotage I say: Nay. Shay was using Zane to find the New Smoke and by using Zane she had to use Tally. ‘Cause you know, that’s what I call friendship.
    But I do love all the characters in the books (I find Aya a little self-centered, but they all are she’s just more obvious)
    And the reason Shay saved Tally from Despecialization is because Tally had to go face Dr. Cable, so again, Shay used her.

    Kiri-wa: I agree with your post. And it makes me want to cry to. *eyes fog up*

    I would have to say that Zane and David were good for her. Zane was good because he kind of helped her see and take chances and changed her from bubblehead and from specialhead. David helped her understand herself (though it took forever) and he over-flatters her which I think makes her humble.
    I read this in Defining Dulcie:
    “What made her a hero is that she included other people in the rescue.” (or something close)
    And I think they’re all heroes. Even Peris a little bit. When he didn’t jump with Tally in Pretties, she kind of realized that being friends wasn’t follow the leader. Atleast, that’s how I felt.

    Terrence: I see what you’re saying, and I agree, and I’m excited!

    P.S. Star Trek (the movie) WAS AMAZING!! SERIOUSLY.

  60. Pony-la:ok, ok ok, hold on a second here!!! I havent exactly read all of Specials, and i just think that shay is NOT the greatest friend. Shay wants to live in the past, while all tally wants to do is move on! Tally, yes i do agree, jacks up everyone’s life as they know it, but she doesnt mean it! Tally isn’t always an ass, but shay is one too sometimes!! All shay thinks about sometimes is HERSELF. so does tally, but….well…lets just say on the road, shay and tally are very………………….ungainly….. I doubt they even know what they are doing sometimes!

  64. I agree with those of you who said that there would be no story without Shay. I mean, Tally was too busy being all jealous over the fact that her best friend was in New Pretty Town to question the system or consider running away or anything. When Shay showed up, she acted like a catalyst for all of Tally’s changes. Shay, in effect, made Tally who she was.
    Yet there aren’t a million Shay-cults.

    I agree Tally wouldn’t be Tally without Shay, but without each other there probably wouldn’t be a story.

    Zane is in New Pretty Town trying to not be bubbleheaded but doesn’t have a way to not be (because no nanos)

  66. Dahlia-wa the Black-Winged Ninja Sorceress: I know… Shay is like half the story, and tally is the other half. Tally never ment to trigger special circumstances, but she did. Now she is one! And ya know, i think she likes it!

  71. I really like Shay… she’s cool, besides the cutting part. that’s not so cool. Just reread the series, and I made some super weird connections that I didn’t notice before. (mostly from skipping around the chapters) You did mean to mention the 5 years of evolution twice, right Scott-la? I have to read again though.

    And extras from Hiro’s view would have been bogus, Scott-la. 🙂

    Kiri-wa: yeah i guess, but it was what Tally wanted at the time and Shay did her best to help her. And Zane kinda didnt want to be a special, in fact, he hated the whole idea of it. Zane wanted to be normal, without the tremors and stuff, but in no way did he want to be special.

    Ant-la: Ok, so maybe they aren’t cut out to be friends, but shay doesn’t think about herself. She thinks about the cutters as a whole, that is why she seperates from Tally, is to go save Fausto, becuase Tally isnt a baby anymore, and she can do things on her own, and the whole world shouldn’t be centered around Tally, who always seems to mess things up for everyone else in the end: Uglies- Just because SHE doesnt want to stay ugly, she betrays Shay
    Pretties- She shares the cure with Zane, just because he is her latest boyfreind.
    Specials- she starts the whole diego war because SHE wants her widdle Zane back;and SHE KILLED ZANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Jay-wa: Yes. That was an added bonus. But in no way would I see Shay just using Tally like that. AND IN NO WAY DOES SHE WANT TO USE HER!!!!!!!! Shay wants Tally to GROW UP and face the war that she started. oh and LOL about the andrew simpson smith thing. I am totally gonna say that now, cuz the teachers wont kno wat it means. oh and ps sorry 2 anyone that i yelled at, i am very opinoanated

Team Tally and Team Zane. David sucks. everyone knows that. In Uglies, she wants to become pretty! Is that so wrong? But she does betray shay, i have to agree with that. She REALLY Jacked up there. Well, you know what? i HAVE 3 TEAMS. Team Zane (the awesome bf), Team Shay (She just wants to live her own life), and Team Tally (because SOMEONE has to be on Tally’s team!)   86. yeah, ant-la its good that u see my side, but I also see yours. Tally is, sort of important, i mean, she is the main charachter. Yea and i wanted to get the Team Zane shirt but im savin up to replace my ipod( my mom put mine thru the wash and now i have to replace it, which totally sucks)

  90. hmmm thats wierd Angela-wa… Today at my school there are 2 other girls who read Uglies series and we made today Bubblehead day. we talked pretty talk and called eachother wa and la. here is the sched for the week:

  92. I read Anne Frank in 4th grade for fun. I thought it was good but I understand how it could be considered boring. I personally love Shay. I like David more than Zane but I just have this thing where in books I alsways like the person who comes along first.

  100. I don’t see what’s so wrong with Maddy, I mean she overreacted considering that everything was an accident but you have to look at it from her perspective. I mean if someone one killed my husband I’d be pretty ticked. Not that I have a husband(I’m 13) but still.

  107. I have loved this series ever since one of my best friends Leah-wa introduced it to me (thaks Leah-wa) I loved Tally and Shay and all the characters. But I loved the series the most because I can relate to it. The coolest thing to me is the my last name is Tally it’s just spelled different so now people call me Tally-wa (which I love).

Hi, my name is Lakeisha and im a big fan of your books, when i read them it was like i was in another world i felt like i was tally; i had’nt ever felt connected to a character like i was to her. I read the first three books in 6 days; i had to go buy the 4th book and the guide,which was awesome, i was sad to see the series end.

    But want i wanna know is if there is going to be a movie for uglies and if there is where can i audition. I you can please give me that information that would be great; i wanted to see the book that was a movie in my head come alive, with me in it.

  109. Laekeisha, almost exactly 3 years ago Fox Centuries bought the Uglies idea to make it into a movie. I wouldn’t doubt they’ve started filming since then, but maybe you could make it into Pretties or Specials!
