Scott, you try and make our experiences with your books the best they can be!!!! No other author is as awesome as you are or has such tolerence for their annoying, obsessive fans! Thanks for being great!!!! 🙂

11. THIS WHOLE COMMENT IS A SPOILER

YES! I sort of hated Lilit (not as a person, but because I was afraid that Alek would start to like her, and I adore Deryn), but all along I felt that Lilit could redeem herself by liking “Dylan.” I WIN AT LIFE. (I actually had to take the subway to a Borders because the adorable independent shop didn’t have it! They had two unopened boxes of books that turned out to be something completely different.) ~am totally pro unintentional lesbianism, though Lilit was either implying that she knew that “Dylan” ‘s a girl or she was teasing her since Bovril says it like that all the time, what do you guys think?~

I was kind of rooting for Deryn and Alek to just run off together, but being back on the Leviathan is great because we don’t just drop off all of our characters and they still have their allies. Sorry, Alek, but I want the new pope to declare the document a lie just so you can be with Deryn.

I’m also a little (very little!) disappointed that the count didn’t tell Alek about “Dylan” outright at the end, but that would have ruined an eloquent ending and the last book. (But if that’s the ending of Goliath, I think I might be angry…)

12. Also, I must say that Leviathan and Behemoth are the only two books I’ve come across that once I’ve finished, I want to turn back to the beginning and read it all over again!

13. First of all, YAY!!!!!!! Second of all, I was wondering if you made a cover that matches the first. (you know, the one without the person on the front). I just like my books to match (:

14. I BOUGHT IT!!! AND IT WILL BE SIGNED BY YOU, SCOTT ON THE FOURTEENTH!!!! EEEEEKKKKK! (P.S. I thought it was amazing that you dedicated Bethmoth to Justine, So points to you!)

15. First off, I’d like to say that I am such a big fan that I left school during my free block and walked to a bookstore, waited for it to open and proceeded to read it throughout the day, trying to avoid as many distractions as possible. Also, I had a gift card that I had no idea how much money was on it and I was prepared to use all of my lunch money to buy this book. It was definitely worth it.

Personally, I’m sooooooooooooooo pissed that Deryn never came out of the closet! I must have squealed ten times. Especially when her and Alek were in that hotel room together (OOHLALA) and he was telling all his secrets and everything. I had the hugest fit. It was so obvious to EVERYONE, even Bovril at the end. Alek’s clueless. If he doesn’t find out within the first few chapters of the next book, I swear I’ll cry and never read anything with the name Scott Westerfeld on it ever again. Maybe. Not really. I love everything too much for that. And I’m far too curious to see how the trilogy ends.

I really loved Bovril and his MR. Sharp. I’m still confused about what they’re use is. Repeating words that are important? That part was unclear to me.

I really loved the reporter. He let everyone communicate and seemed to be good at first, but then he just went and did that article. WITH HIS PICTURE. Now everyone knows what he looks like. Hmm. Maybe time to pull Pretties over into it. He can get surged and all will be fixed. HE CAN BE THE NEW ZANE.

So the next book takes place in Japan, I’m guessing. That’ll be interesting.

I have this theory that Count Volger and Dr. Barlow were secretly hooking up. He said that he had gotten to know her and he likes her somewhere at the end, so I’m now officially TEAM VARLOW!

Golly, this is long. Anyone dare to try and beat me?

16. Team Varlow, IMO, hasn’t happened yet, it’s one of those tie-ups at the end of the next book.

17. I JUST GOT MY COPY OF BEHEMOTH! YES!!!! *pumps fist* Scott are you really planning on making this a four-book trilogy?!?!? This just seems too good to be true!

18. O.O
Scott you were right….. I shouldn’t have looked at all these spoilers.
*dear everyone… i’m about to have a huge fit*
WHAT THE HELL!!! ALEK DOESN’T FIND OUT DERYN IS A GIRL!!! I MEAN COME ON ALEK GROW A BRAIN!!! THAT IS SO…… ANNOYING!!

I really can’t wait to read the book now!!! everyones making it sound so good!!!! 🙂 thanks for the spoilers people despite what i said before im kinda glad i looked at them.
1 more week!!!

19. YES! YES, I DO LIVE NEAR ONE OF THOSE!!! :DDDD

I am so excited to see you. You’re my favorite author, and you’re pretty flipping bamf. So, yeah. I am PUMPED!! 😀

20. SPOILER: I am annoyed that Hirst tries to shoot Klopp…. I mean….. what the heck? But I guess that just makes the book even more awesome and extraordinarily exciting!!!!!!

21. Random facts of the day:
You are normally 1 cm taller in the moring than you are at night.
A sneeze can reach speeds faster than 100mps.
The largest organ in your body is the small intestine.

22. What.the.hell?!
ALEK! YOU’RE SO DARN CLUELESS!
If you were with me right now, I could just about strangle you!

Anyway..
*SPOILERS!*
Am I the only one who had mini-heart attacks throughout the whole thing? I had seperation anxiety when i was away from Behemoth. I finished it this morning [the 6th.]
Eddie Malone and Lilit just.. annoyed me. I’m glad we rid ourselves of them in the end, atleast for right now.
I was expecting a major character death. My mom read the last few pages and was like SOMEONE DIES!
So I’m omging and stayed up late to read the book.
I couldn’t of cared less that the FREAKIN POPE died! Seriously mom. that wasn’t funny.
I don’t think I can wait till next year for Goliath. It’s going to kill me, I swear to you.
On another note, why the heck did Alek not find out Deryn was a girl?! At this point I don’t care if Volger tells him instead of Deryn herself.

Btw I think Volger and Barlow would make a cute couple <3

23. You’re right, Aliss-wa, it’s gonna be amazing. And hilarious.

I’m already imagining Alek finding out, both scenarios with Volger telling him and Deryn telling him. Not sure which one I like more, but Deryn telling him HAS to be accompanied by a kiss! Though if Volger tells Alek, of course he won’t believe it, and that’ll be soooo cute!

24. Barking spiders! That’s a good book!
I am honestly going insane for this book! I even stayed up till 3 in the morning to finish it! I can’t wait for the next one!

I have imagined so many different ways for Deryn to tell Alek she is a girl but my favourite one so far is that Volger and Dr. Barlow both know her secret so they call Deryn and Alek to Volger’s cabin so Deryn can tell him but Alek so doesn’t believe her at first. I also imagine that before that Alek tells her that he feels like he is in love with her but when Deryn is about to tell him the truth they get interrupted like in the first book. This leads to said conversation in Volger’s cabin. I also think that the Perspicacious Loris sees things that some people try to hide, like Deryn being a girl.

I have such a crazy imagination but I totally can’t wait for Deryn and Alek’s first kiss!

25. I originally hated Lilit too (because I didn’t want Alek falling for her!), but in the end I really liked her. All the girls in these books are just too epic. I think she suspected that ‘Dylan’ was a girl after awhile, and the kiss was just to reassure her.

Varlow? YES!! They are perfect together XD

And, I don’t think that Deryn will come right out and tell Alek, or any one else will. I can see something happening (like her getting hurt) where she can’t control what is going on and it is revealed.

26. i want behemoth now! my stupid library takes FOREVER to process and ship new books. i think a four-book trilogy would be great, just please don’t pull an eragon on us. i heard that inheritance is going to be a five book series by the time he finally finishes it. I’ll be writing my own books by then!

BTW, bookworm, you are wrong, the largest organ in the body is the skin. the small intestine is the largest internal organ.

27. Spoilers, don’t you know!!!

Lilit and Deryn….
I believe that was one of those, “interpret as you wish” parts… And I’m quite sure that Lilit knew that Deryn was a girl. Emphasis on MR. Sharp… yeah, Lilit definitely knew. I found it quite funny.
I’m annoyed that we weren’t in Deryn’s head for the kiss.
To hear her OMFG thoughts.

28. Oh yes, I saw Varlow coming.
I mean,
Barlow: I have plans for Alek, kukukuku
Volger: I also have plans for Alek, but he never follows them… TT_TT

Both their names have six letters, possibly it’s a coincidence and I’m just paranoid after reading Midnighters…. or not.
Only Scott-la knows.

29. I’m so happy that I’ve like… made up the most amazing shipping name ever (besides Zutara, for any of you Avatar fans out there) because Varlow is really sweet.

By the way, anyone have theories (besides the obvious) for what’s going to happen next?

30. Okay… well I’m still pretty much on page 19, but reading a few comments I am on board with the Varlow thing!!!!! It is perfect!!!! And uh…. you guys….. trilogy means THREE BOOKS. Tri-logoy like as in TRI-angle or Tri-athelon…… cuz technically Uglies is trilogy, only with a companion novel…. In other words… four-book trilogy is technically not possible but……. A SUPER AWESOME GREAT IDEA!!!! And Alek and Deryn MUST KISS!!!!! It has to happen!!! I don’t care if it happens in Behemoth, but it has to happen!!!! And for predictions…. nobody wants to hear mine, I can assure you. My predictions and plot-line twists are always um….. weird let’s say. I want to know what’s in the weird eggs though…. what if… I bet I’m wrong for those of you who’ve finished…. but what if they have mutated humans in them? Just a brainstorm type thing…. and this Lilit girl, she might fall for Deryn’s friend and fellow airman Newkirk. What if Alek has a msyterious sibling or cousin? Hm, this relative could be Lilit. All of this is probably 10000000% wrong…. but you never know. I’ll probably come up with even more preposterous theories the more I read….. but that could take a while because I’m reading apprx. 7 or 8, maybe even 9 or 10 other books now too……

31. Behemoth sounds awesome. But I’m not going to buy it (yet) until after next week because a) I’m extremely broke and b) I need spoiler cooldown time.

32. Well, Ive got to say…

Amazing job.

It cant quite compare to Leviathan, yet really, what can? A fantastic novel. Keith Thompson, as always, made fantastic illustrations. The part I liked best about it was that it didnt let that Leviathan feeling drop; Ive seen far too many sequels where an author simply creates a completely new theme in a new terrain, or introduces something that outdoes everything else (and no the telsa cannon didnt do that). Im not sure if Deyrn shouldve revealed her secret; it couldve made it a lot better or made it a whole lot worse.

Now for my complaints. What about the Behemoth!? The title is “Behemoth”, so I assumed that the gigantic sea creature played a very large role. Yet it feels like it was just there to make a cool title and make an awesome final battle (which it did). But it just doesnt feel like it deserves the title of the book if you only see it for a few pages : /

Anyway, in all, its a great new book. It introduces a new style, yet keeps everything you want from the older book. I wish that we could be on the Leviathan more, but I can see why we couldnt. If you havent bought the book or arent planning to… And strangely reading the comments page to get spoilers about it… THEN GO BUY IT NOW!

33. I felt the same way about the whole behemoth thing, but it does make sense, all things considered. It was central to the reason why they were in the Ottoman Empire and eventually became a big part in the revolutionaries’ desire to overthrow the government. There was a lot depending on the behemoth in the end.

So far as Lilit and Eddie Malone go, I absolutely love them! I thought they were such brilliant and strong and clever characters. I’m going with the idea that Lilit figured out Deryn was actually a girl somewhere along the line; her liking for Deryn could have just been admiration for what she was doing/accomplishing.

34. @Jessi
i know that trilogy specifically means three books. what i meant by a four book trilogy is a series that is supposed to be three books, but has to be extended to four so that the plot can fully play out. that’s what happened to inheritance, it was supposed to be a trilogy, but it exploded into a four-possibly-five book extravaganza. i wouldn’t mind if leviathan was extended to a four book series, because Scott can write a book in about a year, as opposed to Christopher Paolini, who can write a book in about three years.

35. Random facts of the day:
Ondontophobia is the fear of teeth.
Clinophobia is the fear of beds.

36. How do you guys think Alek will find out?

Right now my personal favorite is that Deryn will get injured (shot?) in just the wrong area (I’m thinking around the ribs) and brush it off to the surgeon but beg Barlow to mend her. But she’s losing blood and Alek helps her over…

Of course, there’s the more explosive version where Volger notices Deryn’s romantic feelings for Alek, which he deems to get out of hand, and to cause a rift between the two, he tells Alek.

I also absolutely adore how the Loris bonded to Alek AND Deryn because it knows that they’re TOGETHER. Or at least supposed to be…

37. ZOMG, us at the forum kinda predicted a little of it!!! LOL it wuz pretty damn epic!!! The ending wuz kinda neccesary rho so it’s ok… PLZ come 2 SoCal 4 Goliath Mr. Scotty!!! Keiths pics were even better in this 1!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Tazza wuz like barely in it!!!

38. @Ginya-wa: I was listening to an interview Scott did a while back and he said that Leviathan WOULD end up being a four book thing–that is, the three novels and then a fourth companion novel with exclusive/color artwork and extras on the world of Leviathan. I don’t know about an entire fourth book, but the way the series has been paced so far, I don’t think it’ll be necessary, unless inspiration strikes for him to continue, like with Uglies.

Also, Raibean, your theory reminds me of Mulan! That’s actually how I’ve been picturing it to happen too. :3 And I especially like your theory with Volger. SO DRAMA.

39. I really have been wating 4 a Mulany thing, but it’s epic SCOTT WESTERFELD he’ll be way more creative than that!!! Same thing with me and Volger

Trinia!!! Like BD (hated it but yeah) and kinda Vamp Diaries, and Mortal Instruments… I really want a full book of the pics, the Behe ones were pretty damn epic (I say again!!!) Scotty does actually write pretty fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY 4 us!!! This is my gave Scott series to imagine as a movie!!!

40. A movie would be great Madi-La!! I could totally see Chloe Moretz as Deryn!! Not too sure about Alek though XD

41. @ Trini – Yeah, but I was just thinking of dramatic ways. I mean, if Deryn tells Alek herself (unlikely), then I always picture her kissing him (which, honestly, is NOT Deryn), freaking Alek out.

@ Madi-la He’s already written it, so I guess we’ll find out. I really do hope he surprises us all in an epic way, though.

@ Veil – I can’t picture Chloe Moretz as Deryn, but by the time the book is out and they get around to optioning it and creating a script, I will. She’ll be old enough then. (She’s like 13 now, and you know everyone plays younger than they really are.) But her face might not be androgynous enough – if we really want her to play Deryn, I hope that clears up a bit. I have no idea about Alek, but I’m not that familiar with the acting scene right now. 😛 I’ll search, though.

42. Soilers….ok well I guess I don’t have to tell you guys, but just to be safe.

I just finished it today…after not doing homework for seral days to read it (don’t ever try to do that in high school boys and girls) and it was awsome!

I agree with alot of other people that the behemoth didn’t seem to play a very large role for being the title of the book. But the Tesla cannon made up for that, expecially since I knew who Tesla was so when I read it I basically had a spaz fest round my living room. XD

I don’t think Alek should every know that Deryn is a girl, or if he does then they shouldn’t kiss. That would just be odd, since he would probably think of her as a boy and a girl being in the airservice is a “hanging crime” (it seems like everything’s a hanging crime in the british airfoce.) Come on guys, do you really want our heroine to die!?

One word. Lilit. Oh my gosh I wanted to punch her in the face. Although the whole DerynXLilit thing made my life. We need to think of a pairing name for that. Derit? Lilyn?

Eddie Malon=<3
I seriously think he is my new favorite character! And I love the fact that we now know what Japan and America are, now if I could only know Canada my life would be complete…

43. YES! I GOT IT!!!! i actually got it yesterday, but my idiocy caused me to not realize that the package in the mail did in fact contain it, until my mother dearest pointed it out twenty minutes ago.

AND NOW I READ!!!

-Lizzy-wa OUT!

44. OMGOMGOMGOMG
I so want to read the spoilers but then i don’t because I want to read it in the book, but then its so tempting!! ARGH i need to read this book…

45. LOL reading a bit of spoilers 😛
Varlow: they so work together!!
I had an Alek-Deryn-truth theory before Behemoth came out, which I presume to be wrong as i read this: I had already heard of Lilit, so I thought she might like Alek and Deryn gets jealous but then Lilit finds out that Deryn is a girl and Lilit blackmails Deryn…its interesting how i automatically interpreted Lilt, an outsider, as an evil person! There are waay too less evil peoples on the Leviathan! at least, as of now..

46. @Cassidy: I agree. Bring on the villians! I would love for there to be a German character…they don’t even have to be a villian I just want some Germans. ^_^

47. @Amy: If I were to speculate from actual WWI, I’d venture to guess that Canada was Darwinist (like Great Britian), or perhaps a hodge-podge of both technologies? But yeah, that’s only me making a wild guess.

I just finished the book, and I’m pretty satisfied. I’m willing to defend the title, guys. It keeps with the theme of legendary, massive creatures, and they spend the latter part of the book figuring out a way to make sure the beast gets to those German war ships.

I rather liked Lilit, and I’m kind of sad that we’ll probably not see her again. She was a smart cookie. (And the kiss thing was all sorts of called for and awesome).

Alek embodies the concept of a “Dummkopf” sometimes. What with her voice squeaking and the whole sarcastic “Mr. Sharp” thing going around, it’s not that hard to at least suspect that Deryn is a girl.

48. Random facts of the day:
Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark.
Frances Hodgson Burnett was poor and sold her stories to help her family.

49. @ Ginya-wa: I know you know that, and I would be really phsyced if Leviathan turned into four books too…… I just really love stating the obvious because 1: it annoys people and 2: It’s FUN!

50. @smizily: I was thinking that too, but then again I was thinking the same thing about America and they tured out differently.

And yes, Alek can very much be a Dummkopf.

51. I find that it’s easy at first to suspect that Alek is simply an idiot for not realizing that Daryn is a girl, but then again, during the time period that this is set in, women are seen as mainly week and wallflowers; however, Daryn is so far out of this stereotype that it might not even occur to Alek that a girl would be capable of what Daryn has done even with the whole MR. Sharp business. Though I find this a terrible view, I do not think it is due to Alek being a terrible person, but that he was simply raised around male tutors with a military cantered curriculum in a society that told women to sit down & shut up. Especially considering how far out of the norm Daryn is.

52. Okay, a few random questions for ya, Scott:
1. Are you seriously going to name the third book Goliath? Why not just call it Ziz and complete the trio? And for that matter, why does everyone always forget the Ziz? It’s important!
2. Are the Japanese going to have mecha? Please say yes.

53. @clareh – I agree. Especially after we saw how Alek reacted to Lilit.

I feel like Japan will be more of a Clanker country, thinking back to all the history lessons I’ve ever gotten on Japan. They were militaristic and quick to jump on the bandwagon of manufacturing and etc. when they saw how behind they were from the rest of the world. Of course, they could also be interested in the complex sciences of the Darwinists, but I think they’ll trust in the Clanker machines more than the fabs.

54. @Trini: My friends and I were talking about that, and we pretty much decided Japan would be “what-ever gets it done at that moment”

55. @ Amy – Of course it’s not a hanging crime, remember what Deryn said in the first book? They haven’t hung a woman in forever or something. They’d just kick her out and send her back to Glasgow. But I agree, it would be really awkward for Alek (IF Deryn kissed him right away, which she wouldn’t because she’s still worried about his status and all).

I almost threw the book across the room when Alek was like “I think I’m in love… with your ship.” I wish I could have reached through to book to slap his ass…

56. I have to say it: THAT WAS SUCH AN AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!!!! Scott Westerfeld does it again! I was soo hooked to it, I couldn’t put it down for a minute!

(K THIS IS A SPOILER – just letting you know…)

I agree. At first, I didn’t like Lilit because I thought she would fall for Alek and I’d rather Deryn and Alek be together. But in the end, I didn’t think she was that bad (maybe partly because Alek said she “liked” Dylan and not him). I also think that Lilit knows that Deryn is a girl because she said “MR. Sharp” (something that I saw a lot through the book from Volger and the beastie) and said to Alek “You don’t know what friend you have in Dylan.”

Anyway, I was kinda pissed at first that Alek didn’t find out that Deryn was a girl somewhere in the book, but I got over that because that means it will add the the excitement of Goliath. I’ve pictured him finding out one way or another in my ehad over and over again… I CAN’T WAIT!! Alek and Deryn are PERFECT together! I’m also hoping there’s a Alek/Deryn kiss coming up… I don’t know about you guys, but that’s me.

Oh yea, “Varlow…” I was thinking that too actually! When Volger said that about Dr. Barlow I was smiling and going, “Something’s going on with them…” Haha I think it’s a definite possibility.

Even though Zaven died in the end, I’m glad that it wasn’t someone who had a more major part in the series. No offense, but I honestly didn’t mind Zaven dying. I mean, it was sad and all but not AS sad as it could’ve been if, say, Volger or Bauer or Klopp died.

I absolutely CANNOT wait for Goliath!!!!!!! It’s gonna be SOOOOOOOOOOO hard for me to wait a WHOLE BARKING YEAR for it!!!!!

57. Lilit knew that Deryn was a girl before she kissed her. I think Lilit had a crush on Deryn and was “curious” about what it would be like to kiss a girl. She wouldn’t have kissed her just to figure out if Deryn was a girl, because that wouldn’t be reliable. Even if Deryn was a guy, what if Lilit just wasn’t attracted to her?

58. Hmmm, I was wondering about Japan. I think that they’ll be kinda like the Americans – a mixture of both. Japan was advancing, but had a lot of western influences since they were controlled by them at a time (I think British did). But then I think about WW2 (yep, I am already imagining what WW2 would be like in the Leviathan world…) and how Japan was sided with Germany, so Scott might want them to have a bit of ‘clankerness’.

59. @Raibean: Merp, you’re right. Sorry I didn’t remember but now that you bring it up you have a point. Again sorry for my mistake! ^_^

@Veil: Don’t worry, I’m already thinking about how the Americans would make an atomic bomb and how the Cold War would play out.

60. I am hypervenilateing!!!!!!!! I just finished Behemoth and it was awesome!!!!!!!! I just am mad that I have to wait until Goliath comes out!!!!!!!! Grrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!

61. Behemoth was amazing! And Keith Thompson’s illustrations were beyouuuutiful!

I didn’t like Lilith at first, but I did when I found out that she didn’t like Alek. I think she definitely knew Deryn was a girl, what with the whole MR. Sharp thing.

Was it just me, or was anyone worried about air pollution whenever Clanker machines were mentioned? Darwinist 4 evar.

62. I’m curious about Japan too. In this universe history, Japan industrialized faster than any other country (it got a late start, but boy did it catch up). So in that aspect, my reactionary categorization is “clanker,” but I think it was mentioned as Darwinist? It’ll be interesting to see where Scott goes with this.

I agree that Lilit definitely knew that Deryn was a girl. I’m not sure it was a full-on crush as much as admiration perhaps, but the hopeful part of me thinks “curious” is being used in the modern sense of the word. Lol. I’d ship it?

63. @Smizily Also Lilit is really observant, like her grandmother. Alek and the British Air officials are probably the only ones left who still think she’s a boy.

I think it’s good that Alek doesn’t know Deryn is a girl yet, because he’s kind of sexist and he might stop trusting her or something.

64. NOOOOOOOOOO! WHY DID THEY NOT GET TOGETHER YET?! COME ON! NOW I’M GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT A WHOLE NOTHER YEAR! NOOOOHOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO

65. JUST FINISHED. Literally 5 minutes ago. I kept putting it off because I don’t want to have to wait so long for Goliath.
IT WAS INCREDIBLE. Now that the character introduction is taken care of in Leviathan, it was AWESOME to have them develop throughout the book.
AH SCOTT you are BRILLIANT! I loved how you split up the Deryn and Alek and brought them back together.
AND I really enjoyed how Leviathan was more about Alek being tossed into Deryn’s world and Behemoth was switched.
Also I laughed LOUDLY when the whole Lilit-Deryn drama ensued. HI-LA-RI-OUS. Although Lilit bugged me a little she was pretty rad just because she was able to be involved with everything and everyone knows she’s a girl.
Also I find it amusing how Alek is literally going to be the last one to figure out Deryn’s secret. And even though I reallly am rooting for them I can’t see how it will work out or happen….
But I’m really enjoying how Deryn + her world is changing everything/way that Alek was raised to think, so who knows, maybe he’ll think it’s cool she’s an awesome soldier and a girl.

Loved the Tesla cannon! GO PHYSICS! I loved Bovril! Awesome, awesome, awesome egg surprise!
And I almost cried at Nene- that was my dog’s name (he passed away last year at the ripe old age of 20!).

p.s. Scott what do you have against characters who’s names start with a Z??? Seriously.

66. Oh yeah, and Keith Thompson you deserve a medal as beautiful as the one you drew for Deryn. OUTSTANDING artwork

67. aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My library doesn’t have the book and
I
NEED
IT
*NOW*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in other news, any Uglies movie updates, Scott-la? ;D

68. Today I got Behemoth for my birthday. My birthday is today on 101010. I feel so great. Thank you, Scott Westerfeld for making my birthday great.

69. *SPOILERS*

The lack of Deryn-revelation really ticked me off, but I was slightly mollified by Volger, Lillit, and Bovril figuring it out. Okay, Alek, even the fab gets it; time to put two and two together…
But I get the feeling that being around Lillit will have opened his mind to the idea of atypical girls, so hopefully things will start clicking into place.

Speaking of Lillit, I’m glad Deryn finally knows the REAL inherent danger in pulling a Sweet Polly Oliver. ;D

Bovril- so cute! I want a loris to perch on my shoulder like a highly vocal sugar glider! And by the way, “Perspicacious (adj)- penetratingly discerning or perceptive.” Given the definition, I think she meant Alek to have it either to help him stay safe from treachery or to tip him off to Deryn’s secret. Or both. Hmmm…

Varlow is now my other Leviathan OTP. Just throwing that out there.

*/SPOILERS*

Goliath can’t come out soon enough. Rargh!

70. I am only angry that I discovered the books now because the wait will be excruciating. I’ve noticed that a lot of people are confused by the beastie’s purpose. Synonyms of perspicacious are perceptive and archaic, so the beast doesn’t have human intelligence. It thinks like a child, and in a way children can be more perceptive than adults. Looking through the useless details, it’s simpler view allows it to understand much more than others. Also, I would just like to point out that Scott took a leaf out of shakespere’s book with the Alek/Lilit/Daryn situation. Personally, I think that Japan will be an all or nothing country because of it’s rigid nature.I’m leaning toward clanker though I think that it will be a more refined form of clanker.

I cannot wait until Goliath!!!!

71. What if Japan is a sort of hybrid, like the Ottoman Empire or America? Maybe they’ll have animals that look like machines or something.

72. I’m confused why some people think Japan will be all Clanker – I don’t have my copy with me to check (a friend is borrowing it), but I thought the book said that it was Darwinist?

73. SPOILERS!!!!!

Oh MY Word!
How could you do this to me Scott?!
I’m so scared now, Uglies ended terribly with you know who dieing, Midnighters also ending awfully with Jess stuck you know where, and now the finale of the Leviathan trilogy will be… I cant even say it. I would also like to say that I love your books but you just have awful endings. Thank you so much. Good Day:-)

74. SPOILER… again!
I read my comment and I realized that I said nothing about Behemoth! Well, the book was wonderful, I loved it, Leviathan was amazing but Behemoth just blew me out of the water. I loved Bolvir and hated how Alek thought a girl couldn’t do the things a boy could and Deryn is a girl and she is way more amazing than Alek could ever dream to be. I also loved how everyone has kinda guessed Deryn’s secret except Alek and the whole world of Behemoth was just… inspiring. One of the best steampunk books ever!

75. @Raibean It does say that Japan is Darwinist (since 1904). I guess the modern real world Japan is just so into robotics that it seems like they should be Clanker.

76. this book is amazing i reread it three times in four days!! I can’t wait for the next book what’s the title

77. The next book is called Goliath. I can’t wait either!!!!! Ugh, this is gonna be so excruciating…

SPOILER!! When Alek told Deryn his last secret and Deryn was gonna tell Alek about her secret, I thought for a moment that she was gonna tell him her “being-a-girl” secret but instead she revealed her “secret-mission” secret. I was a little disappointed then, but that will make Goliath all the more better.

Yea, Alek is going to view girls differently once he finds out that Deryn is one.

78. LOVEEE THIS BOOOK!

Scott Westerfeld you’re an AMAZINGG WRITER! I couldnt put the book down!

But I agree I was sooooo hoping Alek would find out about Deryn’s little secrect. I kinda feel as if Dr. Barlow might try to set them up since she realized that either Bovril is either defective or theres a special connection between Alek and Deryn and Dr. Barlow tends to makes things interesting.

I totally agree with Varlow! And that also supports my suspicions. I’m sure that if the two are that close then Dr. Barlow will talk it over with Volger and well…he knows. I don’t feel that if she does find out that she’d turn Deryn in because I think she believes in strong female leadership and afterall I think we can all agree Deryn’s the best middy Leviathan’s got, and shes a barking girl.

I NEED the next book to come out soooon! The suspense is killing me!

ps. I <3 <3 <3 Bovril and his little witty comments..espcially the MR.Sharp. ahhh i love it(: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

79. Okay, so here’s my story. As soon as I heard that Behemoth’s release date was the 5th, I put it on hold at my school’s library. But, as the week went by, I never got word of it actually coming in so I reserved it at my public library, thinking it would process it faster. But of course, it didn’t. So I said, “Screw the public library system” and went to the bookstore to buy it. I was wary at first because I don’t really like buying books I only read once (I have Leviathan but I didn’t know how Behemoth would be.) But when I read the first line, I knew that I had to buy this book. So I did and it was the best money spent.

//SPOILERS//

Okay, so. I finished the book in a few hours after that. I skipped off studying for my ACT (which is two week) just to read this book. And boy was it worth it.

I want to apologize, Mr. Westerfeld, for almost throwing your book at the wall in frustration. Deryn was SOOO close to telling Alek about her true identity but noo, something always had to come up. (Stupid Alek, for assuming the wrong thing in the hotel room. But they did save the Leviathan from total disaster so I guess that’s alright…) I really hoped she would tell him or he would find out somehow and they would end up together but I have a feeling that that isn’t going to happen until the end of the third book/fourth book. Things like this are usually drawn out.

I wanna give you props though for Alek’s “I think I’m in love…..with the Leviathan.” As heartwrenching as it was to know that he still didn’t know her identity, it was rather funny.

This whole series is perfect for me. I am a huge history buff and steampunk has always piqued my interest. I tried to find a similar series like Leviathan but to no avail. -sigh- I guess I have to wait another YEAR for Goliath to come out. And that’s not even the last book!

I don’t know when the last time I have been so excited for a book was. Probably Harry Potter. I wish it was October 2011 🙁

P.S. If Volger found out about her gender issues, then that means Dr. Balrow is not far behind. (the would make a really cute couple btw)

P.P.S. I think (someone mentioned this before but I’m gonna repeat it) that Alek is going to find out by accident that Deryn is a girl. Like she’s gonna be injured and he’s gonna walk in on them working on her. I mean, he won’t really believe her if she tells him that she’s a girl. He’s gonna have to see it for himself. That way he won’t keep confusing Deryn for Dylan because he’s actually seen her… femininity.

P.P.P.S Bovril is so cute. And so useful. If only people listen to his MR. Sharp.

80. I just finished Behemoth, and it was Epic! I too was expecting Deryn to tell Alek that she was a girl. Then he would fall in love with her, and he would be confused. I am glad the eggs finally hatched, Bovril was adorable. He is so perspicacious. I laughed when Volger assumed that Alek had strangled him. That seemed a bit harsh.

I didn’t realize how dependent Alek was on Volger until they were separated. Alek is sort of lost without him. He almost lost his letter, thus we know why Volger was always in charge. Alek needs the count’s cleverness. I mean, I really like Alek, he’s my favorite character, but at times he isn’t exactly the brightest candle in the room. He is so loose with his secrets. He seems to trust everyone, and is quick to blab, which turned out okay in the end, but still. I think he should be more cautious. Now, the whole world knows who he is. Volger probably had a heart attack when he saw the paper.

Also, I liked the interaction between Deryn and Volger. Volger knows Deryn is a girl, and I am 98% sure he knows that she has feelings for Alek. And may I just take a moment to say how alike Volger and Dr. Barlow are: both were using Deryn as a spy, the scheming, the secrets, and the arrogance.

Lilit sort of annoyed me. I didn’t really like the way she treated Alek. She seemed to really look down on him because he had spent most of his life being coddled. He does say a lot of stupid and haughty things, but she could have given him a break. He’s proved time and again that he is more than just a spoiled brat. However, it was very entertaining seeing Deryn so jealous of Lilit. I never saw her as the jealous type.

Can’t wait for Goliath!

81. @ Brittany – I don’t think he was very dependent on Volger, at least not more than any child would be dependent on the adult/parent in charge, especially at 15.

82. I LOVED IT. OMG.
Yes, I did want Alek to find out, but hey, then whats the point of making a third book? When Volger found out, I hyperventilated. Thrice. But I guess Scott did all he could to satisfy us: at least SOMEONE found out, finally.
And yes, Lilit does know. I think she was ‘curious’ if Deryn was a girl or not, because in the book it said she ‘threw her arms around Dylan’ so maybe she was just trying to see…but in the picture it showed Lilit with her arms at her sides…so, well, I don’t know. But Lilit DOES know, that’s for sure. I think her sneaky old granny told her >.> or Lilit is smart enough to figure that out by herself anyways.
I love how Lilit acted like Alek was a total dummkopf, as he is! xD I love Alek, but Lilit is wayy smarter. She obviously can tell that Deryn likes Alek, which was probably the basis of her last comment “You don’t know what friend you have in Dylan.” 🙂 yay I love Lilit! She’s actually a lot like Deryn, except she couldnt care less if she was a girl or guy, which I think is because of Zaven being so allowing (are you listening, Mrs. Sharp??)
Oh, and, Bovril is SO CUTE! (I’m on Dr. Barlow’s side about the name though :S) I think Dr. Barlow figured out why the lorises were giggling after “MR. Sharp”, I don’t think Volger told her, but they will probably discuss it HINT HINT 🙂
Oh, and Volger does know about Deryns feelings, yay! Because when Alek was like “I only came back on the Leviathan because of Dylan” Volger seemed suspicious, but then was convinced that it wasn’t from Alek’s side. Yet.
I have a theory that Barlow finds out, talks to Deryn, and Alek eavesdrops. He is betrayed by the hugeness of the secret, and is horrified that Deryn didn’t tell him earlier, just like Deryn’s worst fears! xD im so cruel…But THEN Alek falls in love with her and everything falls into place…

83. I just reread my fave parts and I’m fawning over the “All the yackum Alek would soon get past, she knew. And then he would love her, she KNEW.”
Isn’t that so cute?? LOL I can’t wait for some Varlow to fawn over (;

84. @ Cassidy

I don’t think Barlow knows YET. I mean, if she knew, she would have just ended the sentence “But that’s not supposed to happen unless -” but instead she explained it by going, “Oh, well you two spend so much time together, the thing thinks you’ve mated or something.” HOWEVER, I do think she will find out early in Goliath, OR it will be confirmed that Bovril tipped her off completely.

ALSO I absolutely ADORE your theory. Though I think Alek would start to fall in love with Deryn because she saves him again after he finds out… :***

85. Barlow has known Dylan’s a girl almost from their first meeting. (She noted Tazza’s reaction to Deryn.) In Leviathan, she feels Dylan’s half-shaved cheek and Deryn thinks the boffin has guessed the wrong secret, but Barlow knew.

If Barlow is half as observant as her grandfather, Charles Darwin, who was a barking genius at observation and drawing conclusions, then she’s picked up on all the clues to Deryn’s female personality.

Barlow’s impressed with Deryn and her desire to be in the air services and her actions that keep her there. She has kept the secret because she sees Deryn as a truly capable person. I predict she’ll be one of Alek and Deryn’s strongest supporter; she really wants to see their DNA merged!

86. This was just a historical question that I thought of at the end of Behemoth.

We’ve now had extensive interactions with 3 Armenian characters (Nene, Lilit, and Zavin). Is Scott going to handle the Armenian Genocide in this alternate history or has it been prevented by the way Behemoth’s timeline preserves the Ottoman Empire?

I’m just curious.

87. OMG!!! I just finished the book today. AMAZING! But if I have to wait another year for the next book I’m going to go insane!!!

So I totally agree with the Varlow thing. The “we’ve been exchanging information” was a total giveaway. I really wanna see more action between them in the next book

But Alek is a bit of a Dummkopf for not seeing that Deryn is so in love with him. Even after the week they spent with each other at the beginning, she was so disappointed that Alek said he was in love with the ship, not her. Then after the month they spent together with the Revolution, she was totally head over heels with him. Her biggest problem with the “Lilit Kiss” was probably that she was worried that Alek may not think she loves him.

I can see Deryn telling Alek in the next book up-front. Maybe she gets hurt or something and before she (thinks will) dies, she tells him, she is a girl, and in love with him. Then the magic, long-waited-for kiss. Then with some sort of miracle or a brave deed by Alek, Deryn lives and after a slight spazz out from Alek, he will return her love, though she is just a commoner, and they will kiss again. Then he will help end the war and they can live in happiness together ruling their country.
I know a bit dramatic and terribly romantic but it would also be really sweet, in my opinion at least.

All in all, BEHEMOTH WAS AMAZING! I could not put it down!

88. Ahhhh I can’t wait for when Alek finds out that Deryn is a girl! I sort of hope that the new Pope won’t recognize Alek’s archduke-ness just so they can be together.

Also, did anyone else notice that Lilit named Bovril after “the only British thing she liked”, which was actually Scottish (like Deryn)? I thought it was funny.

89. Aw! Everybody is talking about how much they loved Behemoth with all their hearts, but I can’t find time to read! And when I do read… I’m supposed to be reading this higher level book for my ALP plan at school….

90. Thank you for an amazing book.

I couldn’t put the thing down, spent most of my time at work mumbling to my customers while devouring the book page by page.

You’re such a tease with the “Book Two in a Trilogy” bit. I’m estatic and enthralled to hear about it, but forlorn knowing I will have to wait~. I wish I had my own Perspicacious Lorin of my own.

91. @ Max, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to disagree with you completely on that one. First of all, Tazza’s reaction to Deryn has nothing to do with her gender, all Barlow says is “He’s usually very shy.” It also never states that Tazza has a preference between genders, so that’s thrown out. The shaving thing, if added up to other things, would certainly make Barlow suspicious, but it had a completely logical explanation (one that was true, I might add). She also seemed too relaxed, if she’d suspected that Deryn was a girl, then she might have stared at Deryn a moment before shrugging and promising to keep the secret. Also, there AREN’T clues to Deryn’s feminine personality because she doesn’t have one, ESPECIALLY in the conventional sense of the word. She’s a tomboy, she’s been practicing, in the end it was her BODY that gave her away to Volger, not her personality (her voice and her stance are both it). As for whether or not Volger told her, that’s certainly a possibility, though I prefer to think that Volger told her about how Alek and the Pope’s document, or possibly scientific and military information.

92. Also, brita, that was awesome, but of course girls kiss better. 😉 Better breath and all that softness…

93. alek is so very very thick how could he not see deryn is a girl i mean i havent even read the book yet and reading these spoilers makes me want to pull my hair out i think im going to borders or the public library tomarow i mean people who have read this spoiler thing and posted here imagine not have had read the book but reading this stuff i mean gosh this lilit character sounds some what lesbain and volger knowing dylan is deryn sounds awful because thinking on how alek will find out that dylan is deryn i have 3 ways of it happening #1the wright way: they will be on the battle feild in goliath and deryn will be wounded (probably around the ribs) and will think shes about to die and then it hits her she wont ever see alek again or anyone else for that matter so she spits it out as loud as possible that she is a girl and loves alek then goes to france with alek(they share a long kiss) but deryn passes out from losing to much blood 10 secounds after that and she wakes to find that she is in the sick bay with guaze around her ribs alek pering through the doorway at deryn not dylan and him explaining to HER that he watched them open up her shirt to tend to her ribs however the medics at the scene died while after finished with her so they died with her secret but back to the point he SAW THEM RIP OPEN HER SHIRT so dummkopf alek will know dylan is a girl unless hes never seen a womens fiminimatie or hes just plain stupid ok then, deryns eyes will light up and after she gets out of the sick bay her and alek will be abile to spend some time together secretly p.s i feel sorry for alek if that were true because that would be like kissing a corps he would have so much of her blood in his mouth uhh….#2the awkward way:volger knows dylan is deryn so he may tell Dr barlow or barlow already knows so each of them will tell deryn and alek to meet in aleks quarters with them so then they will and volger will say “alek there is something “mr”dylan NEEDS to tell you barlow will say “yes alek “he” really needs to TELL YOU alek:what? deryn: well um you see ummmm well (cheeks geting reder and reder) umm i am a ……. alek:you are a what cmon spit it out already deryn:im a well you see im a.. not really what you think i am alek alek:what are you O,O deryn: (face geting very very red) IM A GIRL!!! alek wondering if he heard her corectly deryn with her pink cheecks says well as i said im a girl in a soft voice she said her skin haveing that tinkiling feeling agian from when alek had given her a manhug then alek froze for about 10 secounds then deryn walked forward slowly and then went to france with alek(shared a very long kiss) volger freaking out alek thinking heck ya!! and deryn hipnotized by the feeling of her body pressed agenst his dr barlow wondering if she should do the same thing with volger and tazza very very confused p.s that would be so imbarising for anyone now that would be like you not knowing your best friend is a girl and has a deep deep crush on you and your parents watching the whole thing…….#3the funny way:um well this is funny because there in the hotel room alone cunfesing secrets to eachother well im not going to type it but i think i know what will happen next……………so ya there you have it put in the peices i left out and one thing….. hormones so dont think alek is gay his body is just reacting its normal p.s my gosh that is borderline inapropreite but put yourself if your a boy in aleks position so what are you going to do keep telling her your secrets or demand that she tell you hers but then her saying in a soft vocie why dont you come here and find out i mean come on it has to happen some time or another and i was a little confused when i heard lilit kissed deryn that seems to prove what i said in the begining about lilit being possibly lesbain i have way more than just three of these things but there um kinda weird and inapropreite and i totaly am on bord with the volger pluse barlow but hey thinking back yes it would be interesting to here deryn screaming in her mind omg omg omfg omfg once i do this im gunna blow brains out this is so wrong thoughts when she kisses lilit

94. oh and another thing i read somewere on this blog that a creature thinks deryn and alek have mated bacause they have spent so much time together dr barlow said i belive it was #106 raibean typed it huh…muahahahahaha

95. @ Kokiris Yeah, I did say that. Next time you do such a long post, could you pleeeease use punctuation or at least the shift key? I got so confused because it was so long…

96. @raibean you said that hmm… Wonder what deryn thought of that. probably happy thoughts. Or alek for that matter hmmm…He prabably said it was discusting, and ok all remember to use punctuation and stuff.

@aliss-wa i belive i beat you on the long post thing. Its sad because half the people who will go here and will be all like ,oh no way i am not reading that huge monster thing of a post and they will skip it T,T .

@max yes dr barlow totaly wants there DNA merged ~.~ hahaha….huh… (happy and inapropreite thoughts)

97. @ Kokiris You should really read the book. Barlow doesn’t finish the sentence (but it’s sort of an obvious ending) but then she explains is by saying that they’re together so much that Bovril must’ve gotten confused.

98. hmm i am starting on it today yesterday. I went to a borders and got like a bunch of anime and behemoth, and wow its makeing me angry. You guys were right i was gunna pull my dang hair out. She was this close to telling him in the hotel room. (bad thoughts)

I think Bovril wasn’t confused he was just seing the future……uhhh…….
Oh and wonderful sofare, i think im gunna blow off sleeping for the next few days so i can finish. Oh and on top of that i will be here, but still i can see it now bovril is totaly seeing the future…But he probably can smell the hormones so yeah if a, girl and a boy who were just really close freinds (or more then just freinds) then yeah. I would understand a creature thinking that they(*********censored*********) and for them it probably was good. Deryn was geting obsesed with Alek so they needed that. (but of course this is in the not so distant future)

And i heard lilit kissed Deryn . What is she thinking . That is crazy Deryn probably didnt want to do that . She had to to keep her secret but one question. DID ALEK SEE THIS if he did he would never belive deryn is a girl . It doesnt matter she would have to rip off her shirt to make him belive her . so either she shows him or alek will never know ,and will probably be told in 10 years by volger(because volger doesnt want to see it happen all over again) so yeah Aleks gunna be so sad and depressed. if she doesnt basicaly show him her (diddies)<before people call this inapropreite and messed up i must point out scott used this word in leviathan),so yeah but if alek didnt see that. I think its all good and he will be happy with deryn. Im thinking it pretty much HAS TO HAPPEN so yeah anyone else have an opinion on it ?

99. That was AMAZING!!!!!!
I don’t think I’ll be able to wait a whole year for the next book!
When will Alek find out!!! This is driving me crazy!

HAHAHAHAHA that part when Alek told Deryn that Lilit like her was priceless! I laughed sooooo hard. and then when Lilit kissed her!! HAHAHAHA OH scott-la you are hilarious! 🙂

100. Oh and also I feel as if Dr. Barlow has known Deryn’s secret since Leviathan. I mean… she is a doctor after all.

101. …Sigh, just realized my first post was never posted…

Here we go again. Probably half of the things I posted originally have been lost to my memory. Oh well. 🙁

Just finished reading Behemoth this afternoon and I adored every word of it! It definitely did it’s job after Leviathan and now I’ll go into my thoughts and theories on it…

Lilit knew Deryn was a girl. I thought this was obvious, but judging from earlier comments it apparently wasn’t. And I’m definitely in agreement with the consensus that I couldn’t stand her when Alek first met her! Haha, jealousy I guess.

..cont’d

102. I’m loving this Varlow thing! I think they’ll be an interesting match and I hope something works out between the two. They would be the perfect match: Clanker and Darwinist. ‘Tis love. <3

103. I had a feeling the pope was going to die. Mainly because Alek’s concern about his grandfather passing away and I was thinking more along the lines of what if the freaking pope passes away?! And sure enough… sigh. It’s not looking good for our young archduke.

What the heck is up with Bovril?! Did Dr. Barlow ever mention the scientific name because, as of right now, I have no idea what to call them.

I know everyone is excited for when Alek finally puts 2 and 2 together about Deryn. Whether she admits it, Volger reveals it, or something else entirely is so freaking exciting! Personally I think it will be a Mulan moment: where Deryn gets in a situation/accident where she can’t deny the claims.

When I was first reading it I loved the character of Eddie Malone. He was so quirky and weird and he actually helped out quite a bit, but as soon as Alek, Lilit, and Deryn were leaving the hotel and he was all “Oh yo what up PRINCE?” I was just like… that son of a bitch. Haha, sigh. I really hope this guy doesn’t become so frustrating to the point of unbearable.

I don’t know ’bout you guys, but I was bummed we didn’t get to see more of Newkirk. He seems like a great friend and if he is the one to discover Deryn’s secret (you never know!) then I hope he will keep it hidden and not become biased towards her or anything.

Basically, I can’t WAIT until Goliath comes out!

104. almost there im still angry deryn hasnt told her secret because people think about it she was secounds away from telling alek that she is a she in leviathan please let the next book be alek and deryns first kiss but sofare theres too ways it could go ether she tells him or she doesnt so basicaly you alek+deryn fanatics it doesnt look good because scott seems to be leening on deryn being more of a boy then a girl what i mean by this is that scott may not like the actual idea of deryn starting a new life with alek and wanted her to be a strong femal character and if your wondering wich book im talking about all the books future and past but deryn still has her own way of showing she loves alek like her angry thoughts about lilit but whats even worse is what lilit did to her its messed up because she couldnt not kiss her that would compromise her secret so deryn had to wether or not she liked it or wanted to was a completely to herself but it probably wasnt good to do somthing like that and your a non-lesbain girl/women but thinking of the future deryn will not stay in service unless she has private breast reduction surgery and im not sure they even had that back then so yes once the war is over she wont be in the service and alek alek of all people may may not like deryn mainly because if i were him i would feel used stupid and sad sad because my best friend is a girl and didnt even say so and knowing deryn and alek do have a specail bond that would be deryn breaking that bond by lieing to alek about something that could change them as friends or lovers i mean if my best friend ended up being a girl and loved me that would change things drasticly in are realashonship stupid because it would have been right in front of my face that would be so sad for alek even though he may not think that its hurting him but it is because alek has proved time and time again that he is a dummkopf and wouldnt even think that dylan is deryn its sad and i think he would feel used because this is the person he creid in front of a girl and on top of that shes his age if i found that out i would be depressed because crying to a women/girl is so very dishonorable but out of all the things she could have done she chossed not to do them because she loved alek she could have told the captain but she didnt she could have not been in such close contact but imean c’mon they have held eachother so many times hey people alek mite not think to hard about it like i did but i dont think just because deryns a girl alek will instantly love her things take time and i just cant think of a way to choose between the too its like chooseing an (A) or (B) question (A) deryn should tell alek wich will hurt him but help them or(B)not tell alek and have knowingly missed the chance of missing a husband and somone who could have made herlife very happy but i suppose thats fo scott to decide

105. Yeah, people who think Alek will love Deryn immediately are “barking mad.” We already have Lilit for our era-appropriate amount of “homosexuality,” so Alek DEFINITELY isn’t going to start feeling that way about Deryn before her revelation. I personally feel like there will be a period of awkwardness or anger before they reconcile things and before Deryn confesses that she likes him.

106. I’m glad that Alek’s mother played a bit more of a part in this book (even if it was just her name). I would absolutely love it if Jaspert came back into the story. Maybe his ship could be sent to the Leviathan to help with something? There are just so many ways this story could go and I’m already filled to the brim with possibilities. I only wish the year would pass sooner. One good thing about there being a year before Goliath comes out is that we really get time to think and imagine all these different ways of things happening. I think that Jaspert should show up after Alek finds out Deryn’s secret, he could totally add a lot to the story I think.

107. Do you think Mr. Westerfeld actually reads these posts?
If he does then I hope he consideres adding Jaspert back into the story if he hasn’t already.

108. @ Elle – Yeah, that’s who.
@ Ridley – I totally agree. I would love to see Jaspert again!
@ Bridget – thanks!

109. I’m not really fond of the american covers of the book, but I love how the other two look though :3

@Ridley I was thinking the same thing 😀

110. I have the faceless Leviathan, but not Behemoth (lame – I dislike the face-making ones AND now they don’t match!) but it’s still better than the bubbly British ones.

111. I also dislike the covers with photographs. i don’t think the people look that much like the illustrations. I definitely prefer the British covers.

And, while I was rereading Leviathan, I noticed Jaspert in the beginning. I wish he was mentioned earlier. @ridley Is rereading what made you think of that too??? Just wonderin

112. I was thinking the SAME thing about the covers with faces. My Leviathan cover just has mechanics and what not on it, but my Behemoth cover has someone’s face, which makes looking at it very awkward for some reason.

I don’t think there needs to be a picture of someone, there are illustrations inside of the book for that.

113. @Bridget I totally agree with you.

And I have to say, it would totally suck if Alek fell in love with Deryn straight away… I mean that would just not happen in real life.

114. Lee, we know Scott-la better than that. He’s a GOOD writer – even my picky stepmother said so! And she said that YA is where the writers who aren’t good enough for adult fiction get published! XD

115. I sill can’t see that Japan are Darwinist because since this is kinda based on WW2, Japan attacked the U.S. at Pearl Harbor and that’s what brought the U.S. into the war… that and also Germany sending a messenger to Mexico to attack the U.S. and they will give the land that the U.S. back 2 them, but it gets intercepted…

Well anyways that’s why I was surprised that Scott put Darwinist instead of Clankers….

I wonder were he’s going with that…

Anyway, Behemoth was A-MA-ZING! AHHH I can’t wait ’till the next one!!! Lillit kinda annoyed me at 1st but then it was hilarious with the kiss. I can’t say I didn’t see it happening. Then the whole lori thing at 1st I was like “Aw, Daryn isn’t going to have one,” but I liked how Bouvri bonded with both of them, kinda gives you a clue on how its just Daryn and Alek 😉

116. @zuniyesi I was just thinking about the same thing today about Japan, maybe Scott-la will start out with Japan on Britain’s side and then eventually they turn…? Maybe, who knows, we’ll see. So friggin excited for the last book! Woo! 😀

117. uhhh…. ok i think lilit is not gunna be with deryn deryn isnt like that right? well i think some people are unneedingly looking for somone other than alek to be with deryn EX:newkirk, lilit, volger(i know volger wouldnt sound like it but i did see a few people mention it)beur, and some others but really i dont think anyone other than deryn should be with alek however i do know aleks not going to instantly love deryn but i do think some time after he finds out her secret he will love her deeply unless scott decides not to write that alek will find out T.T

118. Some people are confusing World War ONE with World War TWO. In World War TWO, Japan is an enemy and attacks the US to bring them into the war. This series is NOT BASED ON THAT WAR. In World War ONE, the war this book IS based on, Japan was an ally and declared war against Germany when Britain asked them to secure the waters against the German Naval forces and Japan’s ultimatum to Germany went unanswered. So seeing as how Japan is an ally, it makes total sense to have them be Darwinists.

119. does anyone think that the us mite get invovled because if my history is correct the us helped the brits and the frinch out near the ending of ww1 so maybe after goliath the us mite get invovled i wonder what they mite be clankers or darwanists or maybe something like machines that look like animals or animals that look like machines whats every one elses opinoin

120. In WWI, the US was selling weapons to France and Britain, which lead to the Germans attacking our business and military submarines. Germany also tried to make a deal with Mexico to invade the US to keep the US out of the war. This led to us declaring war on Germany. That was in 1917, but the books are still in 1914, so I’m thinking he’s going to end the war before it gets to that point OR he’s going to have the US declare war at the end of Goliath and then the “extra” book will win the war. Basically, even though America entered late into both world wars, it was the push the Allies needed both times to win the war, especially since Russia dropped out of WWI because of the Болшевиков Revolution.

121. I think he’ll end the war or have it be really short and end sort of differently, because WWI basically led to WWII (with the help of more terrible diplomacy) and I don’t think Scott Westerfeld would end a series on the brink of a world war.

Although now that I think of it, that’s sort of what happened with the Uglies series (excluding Extras).

And Raibean is right. Japan was an ally in WWI, but got mad at the U.S. and Russia at the end of the war, which (if I remember correctly) was one of the reasons they fought against us in WWII.

122. who will the u.s be though clanker darwanist or machines that look like animals or animals that look like machines? because they have to be something in the 4 book all though it is 3 cus trilogy but there will be a 4 but still what will u.s be

123. the u.s should show up in world war 1 because it is true that they were in it

@raibean yeah but there mite be time gaps in the 3 book wich would explain 1914 to being 1917 im hopeing and by then alek should know dylan is a girl but still who will the u.s be clanker or darwanist or something inbetween

124. Personally? I think Alec already has small, very hidden, very unconscious feelings for Deryn. I realllly don’t think (and would be annoyed) that he’s just going to be like “Oh, you’re a girl? Alright then, now I have feelings for you. Just like that. Yep.”
Obviously he cares about her- as a friend, as a dude, a lot. They’re best friends. But yeah, I can see there being more to it.
He calls her attractive this book, is constantly hugging her/putting his arm around her, etc etc… You can chalk up a lot of it to just friends, but there is something more then platonic going on there.
Just my two cents. ;D

125. I don’t think he does it a lot, at least not more than I think guys do. It’s not emphasized, at least. I really do think Scott-la’s pulled off Alek’s “I’m totally clueless and you’re totally in the Guy Zone (the male equivalent of the friend zone)”

126. @ moonie thats what i was trying to say ^.^ on 130 i should have put that there to and well i can explane: “hormones” even though alek doesnt know dylan is a girl he still is phisicly around one so his body would react to her as if she were a girl so basicly he mite do something to her that he would do with a girl so he mite accidentaly do somthing that seems “wrong” because hes not homosexual but in this case it would feel wright to him phisicly because hes a he and shes a she so yeah he thinks hes paling around with his buddy but hes being around a girl that would explain bovril thinking they may have mated they had eachothers hormones all over eachother so they mite as well have mated pluse i dont get how alek would not know dylan is a girl they have touched eachother so many times (as in them being in close contact)alek should have felt the urge to***************or noticed some odd features around “dylans” body

127. Am I the only one who wants deryn to go in ‘disguise’ and act like a girl again? I’m thinking she would do this secretly to hide from the Germans without any of her friends’ knowledge and she bumps into alek when she’s in her feminine state (this is of course, when they’ve already landed in japan).

Oh and I think it’s a good idea to put Deryn’s brother in the book, but I think he should appear before the ‘epic truth’ is revealed

128. deryn is already in hideing the only people who know is volger and posibly dr.barlow but when the story goes to japan i suppose she could hide it from them but i dont know why mr scott would put jaspert back in if they were going to japan?

129. Maybe he was stationed there. We barely see one time characters except for some Germans. I don’t know I just think it’ll be a cool idea

130. I LOVE this BOOK!!!!! I also like the way it turned out but i was hoping when volger asked deryn to help escape she would run away with them and that’s when they would find out she was a girl. I also love how borvil knows that Alek and Deryn are destined to be together. I need alek to find out she is a girl though or i will cry forever. just kidding. but i will be Very upset. I dont care at this piont how he finds out.

131. i just got this idea. What if for some reason jaspert came back and alek over heard deryn and jaspert talking and heard something. so he confronts jaspert and he accidentally lets it slip to alek and then he has a like a month long spazz attack. then he will be mad then he will get used to deryn. but that probably won’t happen.

132. @Kokiris The technical name for those is “pheromones” not hormones, and I do get what you’re saying. However, I would like it better if Alek DIDN’T feel that way about her until afterwards, especially because then he really does have to rethink everything. It’s also a great way to confront sexism against women (because it goes both ways).

133. Yea I’m thinking that Deryn gets shot or hurt or something and thats how they find out. Also, you know how a lot of the time, it’s Deryn who helps Alek. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Alek HAS helped Deryn. But I’m just saying, I would like in the next book if Alek helps Deryn and tries to save her from something.

134. One thing I noticed— (sorry if someone else brought this up, I only read about a fourth of the comments) Dr. Barlow has two last names- Nora Darwin Barlow. I am assuming Darwin is her maiden name, so the second kind of suggests that she’s already married. Unless Darwin is her middle name because her parents wanted to keep it in the family.

135. @Khoela-wa- I think Darwin is her middle name, because she’s Charles Darwin’s granddaughter. She isn’t married.

@T.C C.M- That would be hilarious if Deryn had to be a girl pretending to be a boy pretending to be a girl! It reminds me of Twelfth Night.

136. @Khoela-wa It could be an unhyphenated last name, like her mother and father kept each other’s last names like my dad and stepmom did when THEY married.

137. it was WWII cuz Churchill is in it unless Scott mixed it up a bit to make it a bigger interesting one…

Which could definitely be a possibility

138. Churchill was the First Lord of Admirality, like he is in the books, during World War ONE. During that war, he became Minister of Munitions after an election (the British call this a “change in government”). During World War TWO, he was appointed First Lord of Admirality AGAIN, then he became Prime Minister.

Sorry, but you’re the one who’s mixed up.

139. I LOVED this book!!! The Leviathan series are my #1 FAVORITE!!!! A fabricated horse in Goliath, I hope? Hehe!!

@ Bridget
-“Oh yo what up PRINCE?” (said by Malone) I LaughedOutLoud!!!! Hillarious post 😀

Erg I would give Scoot ALL my money, EVERY PENNY to read Goliath!!!! I think he’s done… but I don’t know. dun dun duuuuuuuuun

140. @Raibean Sigh, I was never any good in World History haha thanks for correcting us though! 😀

@Grace Haha I’m glad you liked it! xD

141. Ok, so I LOVEE the Uglies series and have read it many, many times. So I was in the library one day (this was like, a week ago), and could not find a book to read. Even though I own all his books, I think,”Let’s head over to the Westerfeld section.” So I walk over, and spot Leviathan. I had heard about it some, so I decided to give it a whirl. Let me just say, THANK GOD I had a five hour car ride to read the whole thing, otherwise I think I might have died. When I got back home, I quickly pulled up this blog, feeling sad that I would have to wait who knows how long to read the second book, when I spot BEHEMOTH IS OUT! I had a little minuture spaz attack and bought the book as soon as i could. I read it, and let me just tell you I LOVE IT!
Now….SPOILERS!
While I was reading the book, I almost threw it out the window several times out of frustration. I COULD NOT believe that Deryn STILL did not tell Alek that she is a girl. But now, looking back, I’m kind of glad that Deryn didn’t tell, because A) it adds more excitement for the third book and B) I think that the secret would have ruined quite a bit at first.
I will say that I pretty much hated Lilit at first, because I thought that she would like Alek, so BOOM goes the Alek/Deryn thing. But as soon as Alek said that Lilit like “Dylan” I breathed a huge sigh of relief. And, yes, I am 99% sure that Lilit knew that Deryn is a girl, for various reasons, and the whole kiss thing had me laughing out loud.
Someone else (can’t remember who) posted “What does Scott have against characters whose name starts with Z?” and I laughed very hard at that. BECAUSE IT’S THE TRUTH!
Over all, I LOVEDD the whole entire book, plot, characters, beayutiful pictures, and all!

About that whole WWI WWII thing, this book is DEFINETELY in WWI, first because it SAYS! and second because, well, look at the darn facts!

And about Japan, I think that they are proabably Darwinists, but maybe in WWII they turn on the other Darwinists and reveal secrets to Clankers…?

142. @Kokiris Her post has nothing to do with 156. 😛 Sure you got the right post?

And sorry, guys, for being so b*tchy about the WWI thing. It’s just that Google is right there, AND the books said it’s WWI.

143. elise it was because i want everyone to read it its so funny and kinda makes me think a little about how alek really likes deryn in a subconcius way

144. oh ok yeah I see what you mean with that(: and i had already read all the posts wich, WHEW, took a long time.

145. but what i think is that “dylan” and alek are such good friends and alek does whatever guys would normally do with their bestfriend. like some people have said, i think that after alek finds out there will be that awkward period where he has to think about things

146. …Just thinking about the next year pains me. I don’t think I’ve ever waited for a book series so much. I remember feeling this exact same way when I finished Leviathan, and here I am, a year later, and wanting Goliath.
Also, not to be a nitpick, but I noticed in one of Alek’s chapters, you used Deryn instead of Dylan.
I honestly don’t know how you’ve kept up with that ’till now though. I’d always be switching the names up.

147. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! My brain is tearing itself in half!!!!!! The hopelessly romantic side of me is extremely irritated that Deryn has not told Alek (this is the same side of me that hated Lilit’s guts the moment she entered the story). The creative-likes-to-read-stories=that-aren’t-sappy side of my brain is trying to kill the other side. I repeat rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

148. @Cassie

I know what you mean. One side yells that teenage love stories are stupid, overrated, and pointless. That there’s a barking war going on in the story which is more important, while the other side yells KEEP READING!! I wanna see if she tells him all ready…

149. @Cassie and clareh SERIOUSLY!! It’s like the side of part of me that likes romantic comedies… and the part that likes action movies are fighting.

150. Oh oh oh! I was looking through the first book today, reading my favorite bits… And I noticed that Deryn called Alek’s parents sneaking around, hiding their relationship “dead romantic”.
I wonder if this is supposed to foreshadow the two of them having to hide their own relationship in Goliath?

Either way, hnnngh that part is so cute. <333

151. well Mr Westerfeld Im sorry to report but you are SO WRONG ABOUT BEHEMOTH BEING OUT IN AUSTRALIA BECAUSE ITS NOT!!!!! I went into the city to buy it AND IT WAS NOT THERE!!! I asked the dude at the front desk why it WAS NOT THERE and he was like “I dont think its in Australia yet” and when he said this my freaking jaw dropped to the freaking floor!!! and I was like “dude you must have some mistake its supposed to be here” and he was all like “sorry but its not”

so all you people who are complaining about haveing to wait another year for Goliath to come out… put yourself in my shoes.. haveing to STILL wait for Behemoth to come out!!!

152. Did you go to a mainstream bookstore or an independent one? Because my local indie bookstore didn’t have it right away, so I went to a Borders, and they had it (not on the shelves, but and associate got it from the back – they didn’t have the room).

153. wate a secound goliath isnt the last one it will have an extra book or a companion novel somthin like that mr scott has enough imagination to make atleast 1 more book after goliath is out its not gerinted but knowing how much money hes geting out of this he probably will make a 4 book like he did with uglies

154. @kokiris, what i mean is that i will be sad that their probably won’t be another book after Goliath from Deryn/Alek’s POV….it will probably be a new character, like in Extras. I know that there is going to be a companion novel thingy 🙂

155. Ok, so I was looking at the cover for Behemoth (which I don’t like as much because I don’t generally like covers with faces) and I noticed that, on the back, Bovril is there, and he is saying MISTER Sharp! I was laughing pretty hard at that.

156. Two things:

1) When Volger says to Alek, “Don’t worry, I haven’t revealed all my secrets [to Dr. Barlow]” I went all, “ah, but did you reveal the RELEVANT ONES?”

Because, dudes, Volger/Barlow would be really hot.

2) The only thing more hilarious that Volger knowing Deryn’s secret of being a girl…. would be Volger thinking Dylan’s a boy who’s got a gay crush on Alek.

157. Wait, I lie, three things:

3) Deryn should get her period at some point. It’s not really that big a deal and lots of things can interfere with a heavy flow (I’ve passed it off as Deryn being too stressed to have her period recently) but it would be +1 Hilarity if she got her period at a Very Awkward Moment.

158. @jha i forgot all about that omg i was gunna say that like a weak ago on another thread but i forgot and yes she should have got her period mr scott should make things more realistic like that

159. @Jha 2 is funny, 3 is nooot happening. I know more girls read than guys (why else would publishing be a female-dominated field?) and it’s quite obvious (just from this thread, mind you) that more girls read this series than guys, I don’t think that would be quite kosher with the target audience. A lot of kids that read YA are uncomfortable with the subject regardless of gender. Also, it’s one of those really small things that I think would just get in the way of the rest of the story.

160. Re-reading definitely makes me notice all of these things. Sorry it took so long to respond but I haven’t been online in ages. Another thing I noticed is that at the beginning of the first book it says that Alek’s sixteenth birthday soon. But it hasn’t happened yet even though it has been a couple of months since then. Maybe it will happen during Goliath? That is like a completely useless piece of information but 16 is a very important birthday anyway. I wonder if Deryn’s birthday is soon too?

161. I agree that Deryn having her period would just get in the way of everything else that is happening. While it could make things more realistic some girls don’t even get their period until they are 18 so it could be just as realistic if it never happens during the books. Yay I posted the 215th post! That is a lot of posts! Congrats everyone!

162. I just finished it!!!!!! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!!!!! When is the next book coming out!?!?!?!

163. Yes, the period thing is quite hilarious, but i don’t think that it would go very well in a book about WWII

164. @ Ridley

How far into the book? It’s not in the first two chapters (or at least, I didn’t see it when I skimmed them).

165. MORE NEWKIRK, PLEASE.
He has the potential of being that funny third wheeler. Yet he barely shows up in both books. D:
I was wondering about Deryn’s time of month as well.
She doesn’t have any diddies yet, so I think her period won’t come too soon.
Besides, that would be sort of an awkward for Mr. Scott to write about, being a MAN who cries MANLY MAN tears and all.

Oh, and Team Varlow. Yes.

166. Ah. I contradicted myself. I wonder, but then say it would be too awkward for the writer and take back my wondering.

To Mr. Scott; I hope Goliath is like, 900 pages. ㅇㅂㅇ

I’m kind of hoping Goliath will get to the part where U.S.A. and the other countries join the war. I want to know more about the seemingly terrifying Russian bears. I also wonder if they wear arts, like they’re depicted in the art of Behemoth. o 3o

Sorry for double post.

167. It’s at the beginning of chapter two on the top of page ten to be specific. A funny thing to think about is that Alek and Deryn haven’t had their first kiss yet. It sounds totally duh I mean yeah of course they haven’t kissed yet but it just sort of hit me once. They have in reality, never kissed yet. I guess I’ve just pictured it so many times it’s gotten hard to believe otherwise. I definitely love the whole Varlow thing but I wonder really how much Volger agrees with it? I mean Dr. Barlow is a Darwin for goodness sake! It makes me think that if he really does like her then he has no reason to object to Deryn and Alek (because he knows that Deryn likes Alek due to the whole the expression on your face gave it all away thing) but then I think that Alek is royalty and that’s the real reason he would have to object. I still love Varlow though and can’t wait to see how it goes!

168. @Payong
I like Newkirk too but I don’t fully agree with him being barely in both books. He was there quite a bit in Leviathan and he had a very good reason for not showing up a lot in Behemoth. Maybe he’ll be there more in Goliath though? Only time will tell the answer to all of our questions. At the moment I kind of hate time.

I don’t think that we’ve seen the last of Lilit. She just doesn’t seem like the type of person who would just drop out of the story like that. And what about her uncle? I just feel like that we haven’t seen the last of her or her uncle (whoever he is). Speaking of Lilit, do you all remember her body kite? Before that Deryn was dreaming of flying on wings of her own and then this kite shows up. Maybe there is a connection there? Or maybe I’m just so excited I’m overexamining things and seeing things that really have nothing to do with each other whatsoever.

169. I NEED MORE THAN WHAT WAS GIVEN, RIDLEY.
MOREEEEEE. ㅜㅇㅡ

Honestly, I can’t recall much from Leviathan. ㅋㅇㅋ

The last time I read it was about a month ago, and that was my first round.
I would like to reread it again but I know what’s going to happen and that takes from the book a little.

170. I’m still not sure if I’m a darwinist or a clanker. I think I’m a bit of both. I feel almost like my mind is darwinist but my heart is clanker. I love the rumble of machines underfoot and the power of them amazes me but when I think of the destructions I really can’t stand them. But while I’ve gotten used to darwinist creations the first time I saw them in the illustrations I felt a little horrified I’m ashamed to say. I also feel like my personality is more like Alek’s than Deryn’s most of the time even though I’m a girl. Do you think it’s okay to be a little bit of both? I’m really glad that the whole darwinist clanker split isn’t actually happening with machines on one side and fabs on the other. I sound absolutely barking mad don’t I? I guess I am little odd.

171. Sorry I just think that on the Leviathan Newkirk was almost always there, especially since he was the only other middie left after Dr. Barlow got picked up. I’m really sorry Payong but I can’t explain it much better than that. You should definitely re-read Leviathan though. I feel like it doesn’t matter if you know what happens if you really love the book then you could be content reading it more than once. I honestly can’t tell you how many times I have read most of my books. Sometimes I go through crazes where I can only read the one book of just that series (this has only happened with Twilight and Leviathan though) but I still love to read my favourite books over again. In some of them it helps you notice clues to what will happen next and I always seem to feel proud when I’m reading a book and I get to the end and find out it happens just like I thought it would. That makes very little sense but maybe I’ve just read so many books that I like it when it feels like they go the way I want them to. I remember feeling disappointed once when I came to the end of the book only to find something completely different happens than I thought would happen. I am such a weirdo. For some reason I feel different about other books though. For example with the Leviathan series while I would of course love it if things go the way I think they will I also won’t mind if some twist happens that turns everything around. It is so contradicting it probably makes no sense to anyone at all. It barely makes sense to me and I suck at explaining things well.

172. @Ridley, I think I know whatyou mean. I read books many many times over (though I just finished leviathan last week so haven’t goten to that one yet) and sure, it may have been better at first because of surprise, but I still get joy out of books I love. Also, whenever I finish a book and it ended the way ithough/wanted it to, there is this slightly smug feeling of YEAH! So, I think I know what you mean.
As for other things, I think that I am more of a darwinist. I have also loved animals so I don’t think that o would be too scared of all the beasties or anything. However, there is just this huge feeling of power that comes with the huge Clanker machines. I think that I would enjoypiolotibg a walker or something of that sort, but I am also slightly horrified of the destruction, and I might be too nervous about messig up the whole time I am driving. Yep, I is Darwinist.

173. Sorry for so many long posts but I’m not sure how soon I’ll be online again so I’m trying to make up for lost time I guess. In case anyone asks me a questions about any of my posts then please don’t hate me if it takes me a couple of hours or even a few days to respond. If you do have any questions though please ask them because I like knowing that people are reading my posts and not just going:Ridley, she’s such a weirdo and never posts anything important so why bother reading her posts. I wish I could stop being such a freak but I was born on Halloween so it’s in my nature I guess. I also like being the center of attention a little (but you’d never guess if you ever met me because I don’t talk very much). You can totally tell though because this is a thread/blog/forum/whatever it’s called about Behemoth and here I am talking about me like the whole world revolves around me. Could you all maybe just ignore this post like it never happened?

174. No, Payong’s right. Newkirk is present, but he’s not THERE. He’s barely a part of the series. He’s a serious background character, even more so than the reporter whose name escapes me and I can’t check my copy because y friend is borrowing it. (Malone?)

I agree on Lilit, though, but I think she’s going to show up at the end of Goliath in some sort of “save the day” capacity, even if she doesn’t show up herself.

I’m Darwinist all the way.

I totally understand what you mean about the book reading, though (except for Twilight, I hate that book and everything it represents). The difference, I find, is when you absolutely hate the ending or you were completely engaged in the ending you though was going to happen.

175. Since were deciding which of which we are, I’m a Clanker. ㅇㅂㅇ
I like machines, not much of an animal/nature person.

No other reason, really.

[Well, I tend to go for the less liked side/things.]

176. As much as everyone seems to think, I really don’t think that Alek is such a ninny for not figuring out that Deryn is a girl. I mean, it’s not a very common thing to think about, that your best friend us the opposite gender. He probably doesn’t think anything of the MR Sharp thing, just that it’s one of the weird things that Bovril says. Also, Deryn is quite the tomboy, anyways, and she has that strong attitude about her.

177. @Payong Completely agree with you! I want more of Newkirk. Whenever he’s mentioned it’s always something fairly entertaining, and what would be more hilarious is if Newkirk discovered Deryn’s secret before Alek!

@Ridley Then I suppose you would be considered an American. They are a mixture of both! 🙂

178. i think it would be cool if newkirk figured out deryn’s secret before alek. It would b so awkward between them and alek wouldn’t know what the heck was going on.
I don’t think alek is a complete moron to not realize deryn’s a girl. i mean the way he was raised is so sexist that the idea that a girl would have the guts to even consider pretending to be a boy has not crossed his (somewhat small) brain. it’s just impossible to him.
btw team varlow!!!!!

179. i would love to see jaspert but we probably won’t be able to again! *sigh*
@ elise- even though it’s annoying i can see how alek can’t even picture that. i mean who sees their best friend act weird and thinks, “Maybe he’s actually not a boy! Maybe he/she is a girl!” he’d have to be seriously smart and ‘perspiracious’.

180. I agree too, he’s not an idiot. What obvious clues did deryn give away when she was with alek? There is some that makes a guy think it’s odd but not enough to think your best friend is the opposite gender and has a crush on you.

181. Was watching an old interview for the first book- Scott-La called Alek “Romeo”. Heeeeeeee.

(In reference to Clankers vs Darwinists being like the Montagues vs the Capulets.)

182. @Raibean sorry this is a late response…
Yeah I went to borders but they didn’t have it… The dude at the front desk didn’t even know there was sequel to Leviathan (which is completly ridiculous!!) He said it is probably still on the ship coming.
It was completly annoying and I no longer have any an faith in borders or its employees (only jokeing)
But I yesterday on the train I ordered it online, because I cant wait anymore.

P.S are you from Australia???

183. right now, of the ways that deryn’s secret could be spilled volger telling alek is the most likely. i doubt deryn would tell alek, she’s too cautious, and the chances that alek would are even smaller. i still think that volger making deryn tell alek would be hysterically awkward!

184. @Lee

No, but if I were, then your Borders would just suck. I’m American. :Y quack I hope it gets to you from the internet before your local bookstore gets it. That would be awful.

185. @Elise. Read My post (65) if you want to hear someone who thinks Alek isn’t just an Idiot.

Just Sayin’ I prefer the American way of thinking. Machines are powerful, but animals help pollution. Or I might just be biased seeing as I am an American :/

186. Here is a summary of all the theories I’ve seen about Alek finding out

Possibly involving Volger, Barlow, Jaspert, or even Newkirk:
Alek overhears discussions
Alek is told
Alek and daren are confronted

Daryn tells Alek

Daryn is wounded and:
confesses to Alek
Alek finds out in infirmary

This could all be complicated while daryn is out “under cover” (aka as a girl)

Other theories that I haven’t seen yet from most likely to least likely:
*From Daryn’s confession about the accident with the balloon, Alek is informed of how her dad pushed his DAUGHTER out of the balloon to safety
revelation brought about by a new character
Daryns old relations relations are involved
Alek figures it out on his own

* I actually thought of this as I typed this post and I think it’s my new favorite theory. The foreshadowing is there. Alek wouldn’t suspect Daryn lying about the accident. He could see that it haunts her, that may be the only thing to make him realize the truth

187. @clareh, when is said “finally someone who thinks alek is not an idiot” i was exagerrating a bit 🙂

188. oh…andi also like your post (65) and agree(: andd i like your theories, especially the hot-air baloon accident thing

189. @Raibean Thanks!!! I just thought,”Oh, well I should write this down”

*rereads* “… … OH MY GOSH!”

190. @clareh– i love ur new theory! poor alek would be all confused and he’d have to ask deryn about it resulting a very weird conversation.

191. Wow… i have been reading these post for the past couple of days and i must say you guys are my new favorite people in the whole world. first i would like to say that the Mulan theory is too popular and such that it will most likely not be used but that’s just me. second it would be so awsome if Deryn’s brother came back into the story. and lastly i have a theory that no one has put up here.
okay so my theory is that Deryn ends up back in her home town and the Caption makes her watch over Alek and all the other clanks so they don’t escape with the secrets of the ship. then when she gets home she finds her brother, mother, and aunts there. then when they get ready to eat it is a fansy meal and everything so they have to dress up(meaning Dertn in a dress) and Deryn’s mother lets it slip that Deryn is a girl not a boy named Dylan. then awkwardness happens and Alek confronts Deryn all mad and crap and then i’m not sure what should happen next…
but anyway that’s my theory so far

192. @lexi– that’s a pretty cool theory but i can’t see it happening. they’d have to go all the way back to scotland. i can totally see deryn’s mom like trying to ruin her disguise though.

193. @baf- ya i didn’t think it will happen, my heart is actually set on Alek over hearing a convo (i don’t know who is talking to Deryn) and him finding out that Dylan is a girl and freaking out and not telling her that he knows but we will never know…( until next year that is)

194. @Lexi – They’re gonna be in Japan, and at this point in the war, I highly doubt they would station someone home, let alone have Jaspert (who is on another ship) stationed there as well. I also think that Deryn ran away and didn’t tell her family that she was going to join the air navy, just that she was taking a trip to London. It’s not said explicitly, but it’s implied.

195. @Raibean…but didn’t at some point Deryn say that her mom wasn’t on board with the pretending ot be a boy thing? I think this was in one of the first chapters from Deryns POV.

196. @Elise- ya it did some where because her mother and aunts were waiting for her is she didn’t make it into the air navy
@Raibean-and my theory was more for if (which i hope this doesn’t happen) Alek doeesn’t find out in the next book and Scott gets rid of the trilogy thing and has a fourth book

197. @Elise

Alek is bound to have a realisation.

How, we do not know how. But we can speculate until we do. 😀

198. yes speculating is fun because then we have this awsome thread to talk about random ways it could happen! 😀

199. @ Elise and Lexi – You guys are right because of a single sentence “certain this mad scheme wouldn’t work.” 😛 If it’d said they were just waiting for her, they probably wouldn’t know.

But if Deryn HAD been stationed home, I doubt her family would be stuffing her into skirts and corsets again.

200. I sorta said the mother theory very vaguely “Daryns old relations are involved” (by relations I should’ve said relatives), but on my likeliness scale-thingy, it was right above alek realizing on his own…

201. i think deryn’s mom let her try to join the airforce with jaspert probably because she didn’t think deryn could pull it off. i’m not sure though.

202. ZOMG!!! Even better than Leviathan!!! Best moment: When Lilit kissed “Dylan”, then flew away. Alek called her quite mad, and “Dylan” said “But she’s not a bad kisser.” THAT made me LOL!!!

Does anyone else think Alek was a bit snobbier in this book? It seemed so to me.

Also, I think something interesting has to happen now that the Count knows Deryn’s secret. 🙂

203. @ Victoria – Of course he seemed snobbier, this is the one where sexism comes in. It didn’t really make its way in Leviathan.

204. HEEEELO wow it has been a long time since i posted here
just wanna post a rlly quick theory: what if alek becomes so bonded w/ the loris that he can understand y it says stuff seemingly randomly? (i have guessed that it laughs when it senses deception) and then he figures out that deryns a girl?
ooooh or jaspert could come and mess things up…he would be all *GASP* BUT HE’S CLANKER! HOW CAN U LIKE HIM and alek overhears…(:
i know, the theoris suck compared to that GENIUS daughter-not-son-hot-air-balloon theory! amazing!

205. for some reason, i really hate the mulan theory…it’s just sick. like how can alek like her after seeing…? its just nasty in my opinion and needlessly prolongs the inevitable awkwardness

206. OOOOH and another theory triple post mayhem!
how about, you know how volger was against aleks dad marrying his mom? and volger obviously knows about deryns feeelings, so he’ll threaten her, for her own good, to get rid of that hope that alek will like her! deryn is TRAGICALLY HEARTBROKEN but it all works out in the end

207. Volger doesn’t necessarily know about Deryn’s feelings. In that day and age, girls were considered emotional beings, so her outbursts could easily be put down to her lack of self-control. HOWEVER, it is just as likely that Volger DOES know (and if he doesn’t, he’ll figure it out early on in Goliath). But I don’t think he would threaten Deryn – I think he would use her. I think that he would try to play up to Deryn’s feelings, but play down Alek’s so there’s no hope of “contamination” (or make very, very sure that Alek doesn’t find out Deryn’s a chick), because the more attached Deryn is to Alek, the more they can use her as a pawn.

208. To be honest, I never thought I would like Leviathan. I enjoyed the Uglies Series and I appreciate Scott’s writing but Leviathan just didn’t seem like something I would be interested in. I’ve never liked history and hadn’t even heard of steampunk. However, one night I found myself craving a good adventure story and no new books to read. So, I caved and began reading Leviathan. As you can probably imagine, I soon discovered how wrong I was!

I was soon caught up in the world Scott created and in the lives of his characters. I fully appreciate his character development. So many novels have great plots and clever twists, but fail to really develop genuine characters. Not so with this series! (At least in my opinion). Anyway, I was so thankful that Behemoth was already out when I finished Leviathan, and I quickly became entranced in that book as well. Now, I find myself wondering how in the world I’m going to survive anothe year until Goliath!

I just started re-reading Leviathan and Behemoth, and I find myself enjoy the books even more. A great novel is one you can return to and enjoy again and again! I believe someone mentioned that earlier in the comments, and I wholeheartedly agree. I especially love being able to pick up new things each time, even small points that contribute to revelations later in the series!

I now also have a craving to learn all there is to know about World War I. Congratulations, Scott: not only have you written incredible successful and intricate novels, but you’ve managed to get many of us to take a genuine interest in history. That’s no small feat!

209. @ rabiean That would also contribute to the “hiding their relationship” theory broght about by the possible fore shadowing of daryn thinking that his parents sneaking about was “dead romantic”

210. I disagree, if Deryn was agreeing to be used by Volger to get Alek to like her more, she would stop if she and Alek got together.

211. Sooo I haven’t posted in a long time… but clareh has my favorite theory so far! It seems pretty likely to me… the Mulan thing has already been done.

Also @clareh- I totally agree about the pollution thing! I COULD NOT stop thinking about all the smoke in Istanbul for the entire book!

@Ridley (post 226)- Hahaa I didn’t notice the flying thing! Lilit says something like that too (see post 110).

212. @ baf (post 237) That’s exactly what I said in 236 haha! But seriously, I just find Newkirk finding out before Alek so incredibly funny! I’m really wanting it to happen now! 😀

213. @Ridley (226) YES I noticed that too 🙂 how interesting. I hope Deryn has a chance to body-kite in Japan…
@Raibean and @clareh: Judging from how Volger ‘froze’ when Alek told him that it was mainly because of Dylan that he came back to the Leviathan; Volger knows that Deryn has at least a little feeling for Alek. Whether he thinks its just a temporary crush or actual love is not known as of yet, but I doubt he will take it very seriously. He MOST LIKELY will try to discourage it (from Alek’s side at the very least); seeing what had happened with Alek’s parents. Whether thats done by taking the crush out from Deryns side, Alek’s side, never letting Alek find out, using Deryn, or another theory, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt he’ll take the lovey-dovey side and keep them together. (UNLESS…He’s going soft because of Barlow? 😀 that would be entertaining)
I think though, that Volger trying to prevent Alek from finding out is very logical of him, but just not, you know, VOLGER. Volger would relish the dissapointment that Alek (may!) feel when he finds out about Deryn. I think he would play it up that Deryns a traitor and all that clart (:

214. OMG, and, though this would be rather hard to wangle because it would need a LOT of coincedences to happen, but…
JASPERT + LILIT!! Aren’t they so good together?? Or maybe its just me and my hyperactive matchmaking-imagination xD…

215. OMG!!! luvv this book!!! just finished it today. got it yesterday. my ‘rents said that this is my birthday present but it’s worth it. luv deryn’s action scenes 🙂 too bad alek never got to see any of them

i liked lilit right off the bat, but maybe it’s because i read all these spoilers :b

jaspert & lilit= GENIOUS!!

216. @Cassidy All that stuff about Volger: YES. I think you hit the nail on the head! Gaaah, I just can’t wait until the next one comes out and all this theorizing is over, haha!

217. @Cassidy – I think Volger WOULD try to keep Alek from finding out if he thought it would get in the way of his plans.

218. If they met (MAN it would be interesting to get to THAT point!!! Would involve a lot of storytelling and a great bit of creativity and adventure)

219. Actually, I don’t think the Jaspert/Lilit thing is going to happen. I also don’t want it to happen just because that’s TOO happy ending. It’s just cliche. (Unless, of course, Barlow or Volger died. DO NOT WANT) Varlow > Jaslit

220. Jaspert + Lilit= (probably) not going to happen. It would just be too… Stephanie Meyer Everyone’s A Couple-esque.

Although it would almost be worth it just to call it Jaslit. Or Lilspert. HAHAHAH!

But… yeah. Varlow > Jaslit/Lilspert.

Only 3 more posts until there are 300! Or 2 more posts….

221. Stephenie Meyer didn’t coin the phenomenon and she’s certainly not the only author to use it. Especially at the end of a series, where readers really want to know, and authors know, so they put it in. (Rowling didn’t put it in, but she still knew – like George marrying Angelina.)

222. haha yes, I know, they’re perfect, but 3 couples is wayy too much…Im still on team Lilspert, but its very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very unlikely to happen. And yes, Varlow > Lilspert.
@Bridget: thanks (: I think Volger is the internal villain…the only one who is still always suspicious. I’m surprised he hasn’t tried to strangle the lorises yet D: that would be sad! Though he’ll probably end up admiring the darwinists, however grudgingly it may happen.
I’ve just noticed…we haven’t made a name for Alek + Deryn! How odd! Aleyn? Dlek? (haha) Aleryn? Derlek? hmmmmm…..

223. @Raibean but if it had to be at the end of the series, they’d still have to meet somewhere in the book; like how George already knew Angelina…

224. Hahaha I know. The Twilight series is just a good example of it. Lots of authors do it, and it doesn’t bug me because it makes a happy ending. What I don’t like is how sometimes it just seems like they decided that since one character is male and another is female, they’re meant to be together. It’s only especially eerie to me in Stephenie Meyer’s books because sometimes the characters are kids and because there are never any gay couples, which makes the whole everyone is in a couple thing kind of unnatural.

AAHHHHH! I must be wayyy behind in my Harry Potter knowledge! Wait… I thought George died? This is a serious memory failure.

P.S. Sorry to talk so much about other books! I have not forgotten Behemoth!

225. @Cassidy I like Aleyn, sort of. Would it work better if Aleksander was used instead of Alek?

@Raibean Oh! I remember now, I think. They went to the Yule Ball together.

226. @Lexi Hahaha maybe not.

@Bridget OH! I can’t BELIEVE I forgot that. George just lost his ear.

Sorry about the verrry early Alzheimer’s.

227. I was trying to say IF they met it was likely but it would be kinda insane and unlikely for them to meet (J & L)

228. Enough about the matchings, on to the most IMPORTANT thing…title and release date for the sequel of Behemoth please. *pant pant pant*

229. Guys, we don’t need a name for Alek/Deryn, probably because it’s so OBVIOUS.

And I was a little miffed about you using She-Who-Must-Not-Be-An-Author as your example, because it’s like associating that only with writers who suck.

As for the “Wouldn’t they have to meet before the end of the book?” thing – well, yes, which is partly why it’s unlikely.

230. @Raibean I think S.M. is an author. A boring and cheesy one, in my opinion, but still an author.

And I’m not trying to associate all matchmaking in books with writers who suck. Jane Austen is a great author, and matchmaking is a really important part of her books. A lot of books would be completely boring and not worth reading if there were no couples. It’s just that you don’t notice interesting or well matched couples in writing like you notice the forced, convenient ones.

Umm, about the Lilspert thing… even if they did meet, it wouldn’t really work out if you think that Lilit likes girls. I guess it all kind of depends on whether or not Lilit knew Deryn was a girl.

231. @ Elle – I’m not saying She-who-must-not-be-named ISN’T an author (she IS published and all) I was making a play on Voldemort and calling her bad.

And I didn’t say you WERE trying to associate it, just that I disagreed to you using Meyer as an example because she IS bad. (I personally dislike Jane Austen’s work – unless it’s from Quirky Classics – but that’s because I dislike the formula that she – and Meyer – use for romance. It’s an influence of the times.) And I’m not saying no couples, that’s just as bad as everyone couples.

I don’t think Lilit knew. (Of course, I may change my mind upon rereading.) Also – if Lilit was “just curious,” what about bisexuality?

232. @Raibean Hahaha yes, I did get the Voldemort reference, my memory isn’t that bad!

I don’t know that Austen used a formula exactly… and if she did, it was more the formula of society at the time than a formula of her own creation. Anyway, I like Jane Austen and not Meyer because Austen knew how to develop characters and use them to satirize society. Meyer just seems to like sparkly hot guys.

I don’t know. I was convinced that Lilit knew, but after reading these comments I’m not so sure anymore. Maybe we will find out in Goliath.

And yes, I was wondering if maybe Lilit was bisexual too. It might not really matter, though, because she might not show up again in the series.

If she does, though, and if Jaspert does too, and if she does like guys, and if they do meet, and if they do like each other, and if they don’t die or something, THEN they might be a couple. It’s just… a whole lot of ifs.

233. @Raibean Oh! I wasn’t trying to say that you were against all couples… I was trying to say that I wasn’t. This is getting confusing.

234. I think that Lilit definetely knows Deryn is a girl. I think that she just fell for her guyness (that sounds soo bad but when you’re pretending to be a guy it’s totally true). Anyway Lilit likes Deryn as a guy but knew she is a girl and was curious as to what it felt like to kiss a girl you know is a girl but who you have met and fallen for as a guy. Sorry if that makes no sense to anyone.

I also say that Alek and Deryn don’t need a name. For some reason I fell better with just plain Alek and Deryn. But I’m kinda liking Lilspert, probably because I’m thinking both Jaspert and Lilit will (or at least should) return to the story and Lilspert will make those dreams come true!

I can barely wait for Goliath! EEEEEEE!!!!

235. You know how you can get so excited you feel like you’re about to explode? I’ve only felt that way thrice: the day before I Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver came out and I had a copy of both on hold, the day I finished reading Leviathan and found out Behemoth came out 5 days later, and now! I wish Goliath could come out sooner!

236. That’s funny, on the post it says that it’s just past midnight but here it’s only quarter to 1 in the afternoon. It’s a good thing I don’t live in Eastern Australia or I’d be falling asleep at my keyboard right now! Or at least I would in an hour or two, I always like to stay up late.

237. I thought that Lilit knew for a long time about Deryn’s disguise, just because she seems more observant than a lot of the other characters and she doesn’t assume that girls can’t fight. I don’t really know, though.

A name for Alek and Deryn isn’t necessary… but it’s fun to try to find one.

238. Now it’s ten to one pm. Are Deryn’s eyes green? It’s a weird question but I want to know so that’s it gives a better picture in my head. I always think that her eyes are green and I know that Alek’s are but I’m not positive.

239. @ ridley– i think deryn’s eyes are blue
@ elle– i agree with you alek and deryn don’t need a name.. it’s just fun. What about dalek??

240. Yeah, we don’t know Deryn’s eye color, but I assumed it was brown. Why? Well, it IS the most common eye color… But now I want to know.

@ Elle Austen uses a situation and general romance formula that Meyer also uses and lots of women adore. It goes like this: guy is rich, cultured, handsome, and sought-after. There is initial dislike between him and the MC, who is generally average. Then he helps her out and pays more attention to her than is socially acceptable for the time period. It’s very general.

241. I really really want Deryn’s eyes to be green. My own eyes are green so if her eyes were green too it would be so perfect. I’ve started to feel like I should be more like Deryn, so having the same eye colour would make my day and make me very happy. It sounds really stupid because it’s just eye colour. It won’t make me braver or anything but it’s really important to me.

It’s been over twenty days since Behemoth came out. Just over twenty days since I finished reading it and started wishing for Goliath.

242. @Raibean I completely agree that Meyer uses that formula, but Austen does not. It’s just isn’t true that her main characters are average, with the possible exception of Fanny Price (but even she is very pretty and sweet- and sought-after herself). Elizabeth Bennet, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and Emma Woodhouse (to name a few) all are very intelligent, outspoken, and even empowered (for their time). As for their husbands: Colonel Brandon is not sought-after, Edward Ferrars is neither rich nor handsome, and Edmund Bertram is not rich or even very cultured. Although it is true that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet dislike each other at first, she doesn’t get over it when he helps her but when he explains himself. That is also the only story in which the members of the future couple truly dislike each other. While it is true that the men usually help the women at some point, the opposite is also true. Elinor Dashwood gets her future husband a job and a house, for example. Lastly, many of the rich, cultured, handsome, and sought-after men in Austen novels are cunning and manipulative and are cast as villians (like George Wickham, John Willoughby, and Tom Bertram).

243. I’ve been wondering, what kind of tea do you drink with milk? I’m Canadian and the only tea I drink is fruit tea with lemon and honey or green tea. Is it some kind of European tea? Does everyone drink tea with milk? I’m kind of confused here

244. @Ridley I drink black tea (like Earl Grey) with milk. Tea is originally Asian, but Earl Gray and English Breakfast would be considered European, I guess, even though it isn’t grown there. I drink tea with just milk, and I’m American, but I think it’s more about preferences than region anymore. Volger probably has black tea.

245. @ Elle – What I meant when I said MC’s are average – well, it’s true, to a point. Average isn’t pure, straight across the line. I mostly meant looks, but especially in literature, those traits you listed ARE the norm. Another thing, just for Elizabeth this time, is that she’s not the oldest child. I also didn’t say that MC starts to like him after he helps her out.

246. Hola fellow posters! I’m goin to see scott tomorrow and might be able to get answers to ???????????????s

247. @clareh He’d answer the eye color one, I bet!

@Raibean They still aren’t average in looks or situation. Emma Woodhouse and Marianne Dashwood are definitely above average in looks. And even then… Fanny is basically adopted by her rich extended family instead of raised by her poor parents, so she is way far from average in that. Emma is really nosy and meddlesome, and Marianne is way more independent than any of the other female characters, and Elizabeth (with the help of her sister) has to try to raise her younger siblings because her parents are so dumb/indifferent.

Why does it matter that Elizabeth Bennet is not the eldest? Emma, Marianne, and Fanny have older siblings too.

248. i’ve just been reading all these posts, and not posting anything, but if you look at all the posts at the beginning, you kinda realize that we’ve changed the topic A LOT! 😮
team varlow and darek to da end!
@levi, i just can’t imagine deryn in a dress. i just cant. :S

249. @ Elle – I’m sorry, but I’m not seeing anything UNaverage, with the exception of Fanny’s situation, which is another thing I didn’t think of including, but I suppose it counts. And the siblings thing matters because it means she gets less privilege and because, at that time when people had more kids, there were more middle children than not.

250. @melmel I can, I saw someone draw a picture of her in one.

And can you guys stop being off topic? Sorry its just that me and probably other people have no clue what you’re talking about

251. Is anyone else having a hard time picturing Bovril? Perhaps I didn’t pick up on the description of him, but I can’t exactly figure out what the creature looks like. I appreciate his perception though- it definitely adds another element of humor! Are there any pictures of him? I have both Leviathan and Behemoth on my Kindle, so the pictures are very small and hard to see 🙁 Sad!

252. I finished the book ages ago but haven’t been able to post yet. I’ve read all the comments though.
Does anyone know if Barlow knows Deryn’s secret. I just assumed she did but Scott never really told us, did he.
I love the lorises. They are pretty amazing. I did expect something different in the eggs though.
Varlow is pretty amazing but then again they are my two favorite characters.

253. @clareh OOOOOOOOOH DID U MEET HIM YET??? he’s not coming to canada (at least not my side xD) so sad…
@beef flavoured loris xD yess they are my fave characters…but i like deryn too and alek and lilit and jaspert ARGH i lika all of them…

254. @Cassidy

Yup info:
Goliath will feature more historical characters, but branches off more from history

He would be Darwanist

A book (either new or old) will be manga!!!! (in the works, upcoming)

255. One of his literary tricks is to have a personal ark and a larger ark dovetail
(I’m assuming war and the fact that Daryn’s a girl)

Another is “_____ imbalance” I forgot the exact wording, but it’s an unequal distribution of knowledge.

He also said something along the lines that some one can’t write a true war story if no one important dies.(this is not exact wording so don’t quote me, though this is similar to what he said) Unfortunately this could mean that someone in the close supporting circle will die. Most likely not the main characters because he would be buried in angry fan mail. Unfortunately this puts lillit, jaspert, Dr. Barlow, Clopp, vulger, Newkirk, and various others in danger.

DUnDUnDUN!

257. @Clareh – Sorry, but I don’t think Lilit is important overall. The only way I even see her showing up again is at the end of Goliath, so I’m fairly sure she’s safe. (I love Lilit as much as the rest of you guys, for the record.) And while Jaspert isn’t “important” to the story – even less so than Lilit – he is in more danger simply because he’s close to Deryn. Newkirk isn’t as important to the story as Lilit, either, but he’s a better candidate for death because he’s a soldier – one that’s close to Deryn – and it shows us how dangerous war is. Deryn and Alek are NOT dying. Volger and Barlow are in real danger. (Don’t misspell Volger’s name as “vulger” – that’s actually a word, and while it used to mean “common,” now it’s a common word to describe pornography. O_O) So let’s take bets on who dies. Personally, I think it’s Volger. He constantly gives up everything for the Young Prince, and remember when he gave himself up while Alek escaped? Can anyone tell me what a Portkey is? (Yes, Miss Granger.) Now can anyone tell me what foreshadowing is?

258. @bridget no problem!

@Rabean

I don’t think that she’s (lillit is) vital to the story, really. Yet, we readers have come to know her. Any of the lesser characters could die in another location, but the MCs find out by a letter or word of mouth. As for Volger (sorry about the name-I’m a terrible speller) He has actually given himself up twice. Both when Alek escaped from Leviathan(airship) and during the stormwalker journey in the first part of Leviathan(book). I wonder how ling this pattern will continue before he does die. It would be a big loss to Varlow fans and would upset people, yet not devastate everyone such as would happen if he killed off Alek or Daryn(not happening. avpm! Volger and Barlow would have a similar relationship in regards to the main characters as Tonks and Lupin, who died. *moment of silence* That kind of makes me think that he might kill them or one of them off most likely any death directly around the characters will occur in the 2nd half, but the death of a lesser character could truly go anywhere.

259. Aside from Deryn and Alek, I think Volger and Barlow are “safe” too. (Maybe I’m biased because I’m pulling for them as a couple as well!) I think that Jaspert, Newkirk and Klopp are the character most in danger of being killed off. I don’t think Lillit will die- I’d be surprised if we see much of her in Goliath. I bet she’ll be in Goliath at some point, but overall I feel like she’s mostly played her part in this story.

I’m glad Clareh brought up how Volger has sacrificed himself on several occasions to save Alek. In some ways I think that because of this he WON’T be killed off, being heroic and self-sacrificing and whatnot. However, Alek’s dependence upon Volger also concerns me. (It kind of reminds me of Harry’s relative dependence on Dumbledore.) Alek needs to grow and learn to trust himself more, not just rely on Volger. However, I dont’ think this mean Volger will die- I think they will be separated and Alek will be forced to take charge and exhibit more leadership apart from his mentor.

260. I think that it will be Klopp who dies. Remember how at the end of Behemoth he is injured? The funny thing is, about a week ago before any of this dying stuff was mentioned, I actually imagined a whole bunch of stuff that happens after Klopp dies. Of course in my mind he doesn’t actually die, Alek just thinks that he will, but it actually made for the perfect story.

261. Completely off topic but- there’s a little smiley at the bottom of my screen and I thinks it’s part of the website. Does anyone else see a little tiny smiley at the very very bottom of the page?

@clareh Thanks for the info!

262. @Ridley
Woah I see it too! Scott, we found your secret smiley.

And I can’t imagine Barlow dying. I can see Volger dying. I can also see Klopp dying. Maybe Hoffman or Bauer. It would be so sad if Alek is left with nobody. Can’t see that happening though. At most two will die.

Wouldn’t it be awful if the lorises died! Can’t see that happening either but it’s still awful.

263. Gosh, I’m a little late here, but Behemoth was AMAZING!!!
Beyond amazing. Scott is a genious.

The last scene with Deryn and Alek inside the walker was so epic.
I was fangirling so hard. Gazing into each others eyes, gripping hands, and begging each other to stay together.
Alek saying he couldn’t do it without her.
IT WAS SO EPIC.
I’m still thinking about days later.

I also wanted to throw my book out the window, when he was talking about how he could never like Lilit because she’s a commoner.
That was awful.

Speaking of deaths, I think Volger or at least one of Alek’s mentors will die.

264. I don’t see a smiley. :C

I can see any of Alek’s crew dying, but more especially Volger (just my opinion. 😛 Like, I hope it doesn’t happen, but still). I really can’t see Barlow dying. She’s just… IDK she wouldn’t be emotional about it (we would, she wouldn’t) she would be all “pish-posh I gave you a mission MISTER Sharp, so get to work.”)

265. @Ridley Haha, yeah I saw that smiley awhile ago and forgot about it, but reading your comment and looking at it again totally just made my day so thank you for that!

@ Raiben Bets in for who is going to die: I am thinking along the lines of Dr. Barlow, Klopp, and Newkirk. One of those or maybe 2 or maybe all, who knows, but I think these three probably have the highest “chance” of death. But then I’m wondering if it will be a “lesser” character who dies because I’m sure Scott-la doesn’t want us to feel too sad so with that said maybe it will be Klopp…? Argh, it’s so hard to say because I really won’t appreciate eating my words come Goliath, but we’ll see. 🙂

266. I don’t believe that Barlow will die and Newirk already came close to dying so I’m betting on Klopp, Volger, or Jaspert. But maybe Scott-la’s decided that Deryn’s had enough people die in her family. Still I’d rather him than Volger. And if Barlow does die(I don’t really think she will) I’d cry. Same with the lorises.

Also if Scott-la does decide to follow history on Barlow’s lifespan she actually lived to be 104! 1885-1989.

267. for some reason i think it is going to be Newkirk which if is i might just cry…i love him even though he’s not in the books alot

268. Hi everyone! I am doing a favor for my best friends and so please look at it. She wanted me to tell everyone to go to http://extraordinarylife-mc.blogspot.com/
She has some fan art that she wants everyone to see. She is my best friend so if you post anything rude about her art I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN!! Not really… but just post nice comments please.

269. someone like million posts ago mentioned that when deryn said she was as common as dirt it made them want to cry. me too!!! i wanted to jump into the and beat it into deryn that she was unique and brave. if alek falls for her and then rejects her b/c she’s a commoner he actually is a dumbkopf!!
@ kylie– fangirling! hahahahaha. finally i have a word for what i do in romantic or potentially romantic parts in every book.

270. @Lexi That is exactly what I’m worried about! I love Newkirk so much, too! Despite not being mentioned a whole lot, there is practically always something amusing about him. I really hope he doesn’t die, like.. really! D: At least I won’t be the only one upset if he does!

271. newkirk and jaspert should meat in the next book tht would be funny if newkirk heard a conversatoin between jaspert and deryn and found out and then told alek then it would cause a chain reactoin evntualy deryns secret wont be secret that could happen right 😀

272. @ kokiris – NOOOOOOO we want Deryn to stay in the airforce and continue being awesome… so the only person we want to find out is Alek because we want some GERMAN BRITISH LUUUURVE

273. @kokiris – Yeah, but I’m bisexual…

Off topic, but does anyone have a Mugglespace account and want to add me? My name on there is Rhiannon King. 🙂

274. @clareh Just one last thing, and I don’t mean to be obsessive but, did Mr.Westerfeld answer the question about Deryn’s eye colour?

@kokoris I do find Deryn a little attractive, but more in a way like I want to be her than be with her. I actually fell like I’ve fallen in love with Alek in a way. I wish that I could me him. *sigh

I’m unfortunately leaving for Florida for 10 days starting tonight and I won’t have a computer so I’ll really miss this thread and all you guys and all your ideas! So this will be my last post for a while.

“I’m leaving on a jet plane” (I really like that song)

Byeee!

275. Yeah, I couldn’t find a way to get to Naperville yesterday, so I didn’t get to meet him. It’s okay, I didn’t have a bowler’s hat to make him wear. That would’ve been awesome.

276. @Ridley

Though I was bursting with questions, I only got to ask 1 which was whether he preferred dreaming up the darwanist or clanker machines more

277. ya i’m kinda fallin for alek but that happens in just about every book w/ a hot male protagonist. like peeta in the hunger games.

278. ok well this is a male questoin (not about alek its about deryn no awfence girls) so is she attractive what do you GUYS think

279. @clareh I asked him the same question. He told me he was a Darwinist cause he thought the machines would make him carsick. Did he tell you the same thing?

280. YAY i see the smiley xD
haha I’m trying to get as many of my friends to read this series as possible, because its just TORTURE how their lives don’t depend on GOLIATH like mine 🙂
Weel, yes, I do have a crush on Alek, but really I was sorta dissapointed with D+A love in Behemoth. I mean, in Leviathan at least Deryn was like staring at him and EXPLAINING WHY THE HELL SHE LIKES HIM but in Behemoth it was just like, “I like him for no apparent reason” and it IRRITATES ME, you know? Does anyone know what I’m ranting on about here??

281. @ Cassidy.
Maybe a little, I get what you’re saying.

Here’s what I think will happen.
Alek will find out that Deryn is a girl very early into Goliath. He will be mad at first, but then Deryn will do something totally badass and awesome, saving the world, then he will realise that she is still the same old best friend he always had.
Then some kissing.

282. @ Kylie – That’s what I’ve been sayin’, girl. *brofist*

Anyone know any good Leviathan FF? IDK how Scott-la feels about FF (Anne Rice hates it; Rowling doesn’t care), but it’ll assuage my thirst for a year, if there’s enough of it.

283. Woah!!!
so I just finished Behemoth (I know it’s a bit late but I had to work and study) and I have to say I barking love Klopp!!! he’s so funny how he always thinks he looks Turkish when he really doesn’t and how he always cracks those gay jokes…. I just love him, and I would cry my eyes out if he died.
I can’t imagin Barlow and Volger getting together, I mean they hardly seem like the loving type…. especially Volger I mean the image of him being in love is just….um…. weird.
@Kylie I love your theory and I believe that will happen to, or definitely something along those lines.
whats FF Raibean???

284. I wonder if Deryn will grow her hair out at some stage in Goliath (after Alek finds out, if he does…which he better.) That would be interesting!!

285. @ Raibean
Haha, *brofist*

I really only need the last part.
If they don’t kiss at least once, I swear.

How does everyone feel about a happy ending for this?
I’m not so sure. The endings in Midnighters and Uglies are a little bittersweet.

286. OK…clarification!! (I read it over and it doesnt make a lot of sense at all)

You know how in the end of Leviathan Deryn is hugged by Alek and she starts tingling and stuff? And she’s like “…do I like him?” And then she catches herself staring at him, at his dark hair and noticing the way he talks, and stuff? Like she’s falling in love, right?
Well, in Behemoth, I was expecting more of that. I was expecting more of, “am I REALLY in love with this dummkopf?” But I got a whole lot of, “I love him, plain and simple, even though I’ve only known him for like a week, and I’m already dreaming of when he’ll love me too, even if I do think he’s a total dummkopf.” It just DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. I wanted her to think about WHY she likes him before just admitting it to herself. Why? Is he hot, smart, nice, etc? WHY???? I need some more of that…

287. @ Cassidy
Yes I get where you are coming from.
But at the same time I don’t mind. In Leviathan, she discovers she likes him, but in Behemoth, it’s just sort of fact. She tries to convince herself that she doesn’t, but that was a complete fail.

They’re just meant to be, and Deryn knows it.
Heck, even Bovril knows it. Which is why he bonded witht the both of them.

288. umm raibean i know a good fanfic just go to google and type i want to make love with deryn sharp ok dont think its messed up its actualy a very clean and none dirty fanfic the name is misleading but the first thing you find that says fanfic click it its very good 😀 and the name of the site its on is fan fic.net its very good

289. Hey guys, first type posting here, cause I only finished the book today and I’m a complete spoiler-phobe. It took me a while ’cause I started it two weeks ago and then had to ban myself from reading anymore ’cause I just had way too much work for University. I think I had some withdrawal symptoms.

Anyway, I have soo much stuff to reply to, but I’ll divide it all up nice and neat for you so you don’t have to go through a wall of text. I’m not gonna post my opinions here, just cause everyone have and it’s repetitive XD, but it was AMAZING.

Anyway, in replies to other people:

About who I think will die: I have to say that the theory of Volger dying because he always sacrifices himself for Alek is extremely convincing. It would also prove as a growing up point for Alek in his life, which perhaps he needs.

About whoever said Lilit was not going to die because she was not in the war. Well, she may not be in the war, but as someone brought up earlier there was an Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire that occurred in 1915. After looking up the origins of the names Lilit and Zaven, I found out that Zaven is an Armenian name. I’m not sure if the book explicitly stated that they were Armenian, but if Scott decides to keep the genocide in…

As for Deryn and Alek not dying because they are main characters, well, look at Uglies… and Midnighters too. Even though there’s no death in that one, it’s not exactly a happy ending to say the least.

@ Raibean I don’t have a mugglespace account, but I DO have a fanfiction account, and I am planning to write some Leviathan fanfiction. Also, Scott did bring up Fanfiction before. I believe he brought it up the time when he talked about someone mailing him a cheque. He said that he honestly doesn’t care whether we buy his book or read it in a library or bookstore, or draw fanart, or write fanfiction. He’s okay with all of it.

290. @ Clareh, may I use your idea of Alek finding out Deryn is a girl through the hot air balloon story for a fanfic?

291. Ahhh! I’ve seen all the fanfiction stuff and I can’t like any of them because I know there not Scotts words. 🙁 But someone is bound to think up something similar to what Scott will write so I’ll keep reading nevertheless.
I’m gonna go mad waiting a whole year!! The other day I was making a mental list of all the crap things I will have to get through before it comes.. It made me want to cry 🙁

292. Hmm.. I’ve never really gotten into the whole fan fiction thing, but if you guys say it’s good I might just read one or two. The only thing is: if it’s written well, I get bummed out if it doesn’t actually happen in the books haha ;D

293. Someone brought up the “bittersweet” ending – I thought that was self-evident! Deryn and Alek get together but Alek doesn’t get the crown!

Ouais, j’adore FF. I’m glad Scott’s okay with it, or I might feel a little guilty. And thanks for the links, guys. 🙂

294. I liked “A Matter of Trust” but I hate Loyalties. I couldn’t get past chapter two. FountainOfPens runs right through the parts I want to read! She doesn’t copy Scott-la’s style very well, which is okay, but the speed…. No. And it’s all about “love” when they haven’t gotten to that point yet. Really. It turns Deryn and Alek into those dumb teenagers that fall in “love” too fast instead of the awesome people they are.

295. raibean i have to desiagree 1 because your not supposed to copy the authors writing style just so the reader will feel a false feeling of reading what the author says (so the reader will feel a bit happy) its just not the same person so dont expect the same and why did you like a matter of trust so much it doesnt support deryn and alek likeing eachother are you anti deryn+alek and there not stupid teenagers although it is your opinnoin atleast the writer of a matter of trust should have made a secound chapter were its like 3 weeks later and deryn and alek admit they like eachother and you didnt show any pros with your opinnoin on loyalties why do you hate it so much its like your hateing on something you dont understand you should read the whole thing they are already awsome people in loyalties you dont need to say there stupid teenagers then say there really awsome people that was like a waste of words and the only pro i see in a matter of trust is that its realistic now let me say a thing the characters (deryn and alek) are ficton not fact they were never real so dont say there conversatons should be real they are awsome characters but an author is an author he/she wil write what they want and the cons in loyalties is that it was a cliche of the “instant love” and if you check your facts loyalties had a diffrence imbetween alek and newkirk finding out (2 weeks) imbetween them fighting for her and then alek and deryns love ok you should read the whole thing so you can give a better opinnoin on it and the speed oh yes but you need to get to the good stuff wich is in chapters 3 and 4 so please reconsider your thoughts and dont just hate it because you need somethin to hate /reconsider/

296. 415 wow when scott talked about it was only 100 thats alot but better yet triple it yessss YES its so awsome!

297. I don’t hate it because I need something to hate; I dislike it because even though it SAYS time passes, that doesn’t change things for the reader. It skips the good parts; the stuff I want to read. Like I said, I don’t MIND it when a fanfiction doesn’t copy the original author’s style well (especially when it’s only slightly related to the original works) – that was NOT the issue. The issue was that it moved everything too quickly. I’m not talking about the time going on in the story; I’m talking about word count and skipping over events that are pertinent to the story. I would have ADORED to read The Incident, or about Alek and Newkirk getting into a physical fight, or about Deryn and Alek traipsing around and nearly getting caught by Volger. THAT’S the good stuff. But it just skips over it. And yes, it throws the word “love” around waaay too much. In the books, Deryn’s not hooked up on it. She doesn’t throw it around almost meaninglessly, YES, like the “stupid” teenagers I don’t want them to act like – it’s because she’s not daft.

298. I also tried reading one of their Scorpius/Rose ones, and it did the same thing, so I didn’t get through the first/second part.

299. Okay, guys, sorry for the triple posts.

@ kokiris – Yeah, I finished the whole thing. It’s a good “skeleton,” which I didn’t say before but doesn’t deviate from what I was getting at; the last two chapters didn’t change my opinion at all. It’s missing at least half the story. My favorite half. And yeah, they WERE really rushing it in that one, this whole “let’s get together and in a week/two weeks/a month let’s start being really serious and think about the rest of our lives together.” That’s what it was like. And it’s a poor portrayal of the characters IMO. In the books, Deryn brings up Alek’s future as an emperor because she knows Alek will go out of his way to avoid getting together with common blood, not because she wants to up and marry him or because she thinks it would get that far if they got together. It’s an implication and not something that’s said outright, but it’s important, especially in a fanfiction where that’s the focus. The end scene is more fitting for, say, the end of the war. It’s to iconic to fit the events in the story.

300. I..um.. didn’t really like Loyalties either… but i was to scared to say lol. no but who ever wrote it is still cool because they had an idea and they had enough courage to put it online… something I would never be able to do to so * clap clap clap * theres a round of a applause.

301. Kokiris, sweetie, not everyone is going to like everything you like or (if you wrote it, since you sounded pretty defensive) you make. It’s one of the reasons we’re all so different. And you don’t need a reason to dislike something in a general sense; being “enjoyable” is different from being “good” – good has to be held up to professional standards and enjoyable has to be held to personal ones. Someone disliking something you like in no way invalidates your opinion or enjoyment of that thing. So please don’t get defensive when someone says they disliked it. And be civil – I found it incredibly rude when you suggested that the only reason I disliked Loyalties was for fun. THAT was invalidating and very immature of you.

302. Actually i must agree with Raibean it just seemed so fake in a way…like they were to lovey dovey and not the kick a** people we know and love so yeah….but i did still like it i mean i’m like reading all of the ff stories on fanfic.net and some are really good others not so much…

303. To sum it up, kokiris, FountainOfPens actually said that all but one of my points was completely valid and that they didn’t put their full effort into the story, got bored with it, and wanted to finish it up. Which accounts for my biggest problem with the thing. I was also welcomed to take the idea and do a full one version if I wished. (I toyed with the idea, but I don’t have the time.)

304. well i am sorry for geting definsive about it well….your…..your thinking about it way to much it was my opinnoin not a review of how i hated anything that you said and no im not all that immature about it i mean i really injoyed that and hearing someone completely disagree and put it so black and white that you had to say they were being stupid teenagers and all made me a little agitated so i got definsive about it because you treated it like trash its a very good ff no need to treet it like that and hey it doesnt need more chapters it was finished so if the author says it is finished its finished you cant argue now ok i have to point out it did go fast with there love life but thats minor please state what you wanted to read and what you didnt and i must say you overused the words: me i and myself so hey F.Y.I everyone is reading it so did you think about anyone elses opinnoin its not made specificly for you its made for everyone read there opinnoin i did and most of them said it was awsome and cute and you posted like 5 replies to my post its not a hard thing to think about no need to be a spammer i had just one post and it bothered you so much that you posted 5 replies its a ff for alek+deryn fans if your not an alek+deryn fan dont read it its about fluffy woveyloveydoveynes not about correcting everything it cant be perfect and im a guy not a girl dont call me sweetie and i dont think you should act so hi of your self that you had to call me sweetie like i was a child haveing a fit and that you have a higher intalect (hater) so calm down you dont need to act that way

305. I didn’t really like it. i’m sorry kokiris. it seemed to quick. i kinda liked a matter of trust. but i’ve always thought that after alek found out he would have a long time of bein mad. i mean finding out your best friend is actually a girl is nothing small.

306. i disgree with finding your best freind is a girl “small” how would you feel if your best freind sudunly turned into a girl hypatheticly ovecourse

307. I hope the person who wrote Loyalties doesn’t read this blog…. that would be..um…awkward (did i spell that right??)

308. lee that would akward….. and I would like to also add we all have different thoughts so can we please not yell at each other?????

309. I’m sorry kokiris, but I’m not even going to bother with your larger posts if you don’t use basic punctuation. It’s hard enough to understand what you’re trying to say without having to figure out where the sentence ends.

And I can’t believe you think I’m anti Alek-Deryn just because I disliked a particular fan fiction. What do you think I ship? Deryn-Volger? That’s almost as ridiculous as saying I don’t ship Alek-Deryn… I didn’t like it because it went too fast and they were talking about “love” instead of talking about crushes, like it should be. The parts I wanted to read? I wanted to read about the Incident, about Newkirk and Alek getting into a fight, about them realizing their feelings for Deryn and discovering that the other felt the same way before Deryn figured it out. I wanted to read about Deryn and Alek sneaking around and nearly getting caught by Volger. The best parts of the story were the ones s/he didn’t write.

310. I think that Cassidy brought up an interesting point regarding Deryn’s love for Alek. To a degree, I agree with your assessment: Deryn is falling for him in Leviathan, and it becomes more of a fact in Behemoth. However, I think we can infer a lot from the plot: their adventures together and interactions with one another make it clear that they become incredibly close throughout the novels. Best friends, even. We see this in the way they care for each other, and have one another’s back. As the reader, we clearly know that Deryn is a girl and the relationship takes on a whole new meaning. Alek (and the other characters who are unaware of Deryn’s secret) see it as a close friendship. We, the readers, and Deryn can see it as much more than that because we are fully aware of all of the factors.

And, I think we must also remember that men and women think differently. I don’t pretend to understand the male mind, but I do think that women tend to read into things more. I know that I’m constantly reading between the lines regarding their relationship and overanalyzing their interactions. Perhaps that’s why I agree with you and think that there needs to be more of a progression into her feelings for him. Just a thought! 🙂

311. i agree with u Morgan…girls do tend to overthink things and i’m kind of waiting for when Deryn starts that and then her deciding she REALLY wants Alek to know that she is a girl. then Alek getting pised off and then realizing he is being a ninny and seeing her as his best friend (Dylan) the girl, then the mussy crap happening.

just my thoughts…but i mean if you have ever read any of Mr.Westerfeld’s books the endings always suck in my oppion and because of this i personally don’t think Deryn and Alek will ever get together in these books, unless he makes a fourth book….hmmmm very sad thought :'(

312. @ morgan- i agree with you. i am always overthinking everything to the point where it can annoy people. on the other hand guys sometimes just don’t seem to think.
@ lee- thanks. and yeah the author of loyalties reading this would be totally awkward.

313. If the endings sucked so much, I wouldn’t read them, but how much they “suck” is based on how much of a perfect ending I want. Someone earlier said that his endings were always “bittersweet.” I definitely agree with that. I think they WILL get together, but the new pope won’t recognize the old Pope’s edict, so he doesn’t get the throne. I also think someone very close will die, at worst Barlow or Volger, at best Newkirk or Klopp or Jaspert. Someone said he was doing a companion fourth book, and if that happens, that means that Deryn and Alek have to start something for there to be a connection between them. Something epic. What do you guys think it will be?

314. I always figured the companion book was going to be like Bubbly to Bogus. Has Scott actually said it’s going to be a novel? Like Kylie said, I thought it had all the pictures in it and maybe some information about the world.

And I’m betting the ending of the Leviathan Series is going to make me cry. Just like with the ending of the Uglies Series. I know that killing off major characters, especially in a war story, adds some realism to it all, but I’m not gonna handle it well XD;;

O_O I see the smiley face at the bottom of the screen now!

315. does anyone think that scott-la actually reads these posts as suggestions for his books? because that would be really cool! 🙂

@lexie+kylie
i saw scott a while ago, but i think he said that the companion book included keith’s drawings as well as being a companion book itself.

@raibean
i agree that somebody close will die, but i have absolutely no idea who. it could go off in so many different directions, you know? and i think that the companion book will kind of be like extras, in which what alek and deryn do kind of changes the world and shapes society differently.

316. Hm, no idea if Scott reads these or not. I know if I was him then I wouldn’t, at least not until I finished the series. I wouldn’t want to risk getting any criticism until it was over, ’cause that uninspires me to write. Also, I wouldn’t want others’ ideas to change my own.

Also, I would feel really bad if the fans are like “I don’t want this person to die!” when I was already planning to kill that character off XD.

317. He’s already finished Goliath – at least the first draft; not sure if his tweet meant the whole thing. I mean, it takes Carey 2 years to pop out a book (1 year for writing and editing, another for publication itself), but Scott-la does it in a year, so he’ll be done with it soon if he isn’t already.

318. i thought i heard that the companion book would just be keith’s drawings and more info about the world of leviathan but i’m not sure.

319. @Esprit Haha, completely agree! I doubt he reads these, especially since it’s 400-something long xD

320. I just realized that I haven’t even tried to examen the actual historical context. I suggest we all do some research to be able to better predice what will happen

321. wow didnt know and or realize he didnt read these i would if i were him ^.^

off topic:does anyone like fullmetal,alchemist

@raibean:ok lets just stop argueing its not going anywhere and that made me a little angry for you to talk about my long posts ok i dont like use puncuatoin im not the best speller but you dont need to throw it in my face good thing you didnt read that post you would have been so angry and you only seem to talk about my long posts not anyone elses ive seen others like mine

322. the most likely event for scott to use that I see is the ta-pa-ni incident

wiki says:
The Ta-pa-ni Incident was one of the largest armed uprisings against Japanese rule in Taiwan. Alternative names used to refer to the incident include the Silai Temple Incident (西来庵事件 Sairai-an jiken?), after Silai Temple where the revolt began, or the Yu Ching-fang Incident, after the leader Yu Qingfang.

323. Hm, that would make some sense Clareh, since it is close to Japan and in around the same time period.

I think another likely incident is the genocide of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, since we were just there.

324. In the online interview he said that leviathan would visit america and mexico too. I’ll have to check that out later

325. @ clareh– Thanks 4 the info. that makes a lot of sense. he said they would visit america? sounds like fun

326. I’m betting the Mexico/America thing is for the fourth book. No way they’re travelling that quickly.

Kokiris – I DID read the post. And the only other post I remember being long and without punctuation (since it’s easier when they’re shorter) was one that I spoke up about as well. Please don’t presume to think you know me well enough to predict how I feel about something. I also didn’t say anything about your spelling.

Also, I adore FMA.

327. Yay! scott-la posted the video chat on his blog! 🙂 now i can watch it!

all my friends have said that fullmetal alchemist was really good, so i’m going to have to read it soon!

To get back on the topic of research, on wikipedia, it says that darwin was dr. barlow’s maiden name, because she married a man named alan barlow. Wow! she lived to be 104! if she was born in 1885, she would have been 38 or 39 at the start of scott’s version of the war. i kinda thought she was younger….

@raibean
i agree about mexico/america being in the fourth book. it just makes a lot more sense then the leviathan traveling to all three places in one book.

328. All right people, let’s keep the peace. <3

Did anyone else really love that Deryn started to understand german?
I just thought it was really awesome.

329. @melmel Hmm, yeah I guess I imagined her “younger” as well, but more between the ages of 30-35 so it really isn’t too far off. But now this has me wondering how old Volger is… 🙂

330. I want her and Alek to fun off in Tokyo or something and Alek’s already caught on to some Japanese so he’s all debonair as he leads her along… :**)

331. but why would they go to mexico or america i mean its tough trying to figure out what japan is gunna be (clankerORdarwanist) what would america be though or mexico O.o

raibean you like full metal alchemist 😀 ?!?!!!!!!

332. answer: japan=darwanist america=clanker mexico=?

hmmm……i need to……research…that last one :s

333. I am not up to date on the books (I know I’ve gotten past 8) but I’ve watched all the episodes of both series.

America is Darwinist, remember? Mexico, I really don’t know, but it would probably be a little of both. There would be an insurgence on Clanker technology since Germany will be trying to tempt them into declaring war on the US. Japan is Darwinist, too. Books said so.

334. Page 479 “The Japanese had been Darwinists since signing a cooperation pact with the British in 1902.”

335. Wait, I’m wrong on the Americans. “Americans were an odd bunch – neither Clanker nor Darwinist. They dabbled with both way,s mixing technologies as they saw fit.” page 107. I supposed I lumped them in with the Darwinists because that’s the side they end up joining.

336. wow, this thread is getting longer and longer!
Has anyone here read Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen? I always imagine Alek realizing just like Bryce in Flipped. For those of you who don’t want to read it (though its a very good book xD) here’s a quick summary:
Julianna likes Bryce from the start, right from when she first sees him. Bryce, on the other hand, thinks she’s just weird. Slowly, Julianna starts to realize that Bryce doesn’t care for her at all, and tries to move on. At the same time, Bryce falls in love with Juli!

I imagine that Deryn will probably try to cool herself down, and think about other things, because she’s convinced that Alek will never be able to love her. Alek notices her, falls in love. Finally, to undo the last knot, a letter comes from the Vatican saying the old pope’s declaration is not valid.

What do you think? Is that a good idea for a fanfic?

337. I`m German and I read Behemoth this weak on english and I have to say its the best book if ever read! But when there was german sentence there were many mistakes! Its dont call “Was uns getroffen?” its “Was HAT uns getroffen?” only by the way. I love Behemoth and look forward to Goliath 🙂

338. @Lena – I’m sure you could e-mail the editor and they could fix it for the next edition. Maybe for Goliath, Scott-la could talk to his German translator about those sentences. :3

339. Hey guys! I’m back! I’ve been reading the posts and those two fanfiction things and I have some things to say.

1. Sorry kokiris but I didn’t really like Loyalties. I thought that they didn’t really seem like the characters that we all know and love and so much of it just seemed really unrealistic and unlikely to happen. I think it’s really cool that you helped write it though! I think that it’s great that people do those kinds of things (to tell the truth, I’ve never heard of fanfiction before today).

2. I didn’t really like A Matter of Trust either, because again it just didn’t seem realistic to me.

3. When I was originally reading Leviathan for the first time I actually thought that Deryn would tell Alek during the book and I knew that they were so obviously meant to be together, so I was a little mad that it didn’t happen then. The beginning of Behemoth sent a thrill through MY stomach and so I was on the verge of screaming when I finished and NOTHING like that had happened to them. (explanation: I have been homeschooled for the past six years and know zero guys, have no boyfriend not even anyone to crush on, and have relied on books so I can fall in love with someone (although I have only truly fallen for Alek, I still fell like I’m being kissed when I’m really into a book and there is a kiss in it)).

4f. Yesterday on the plane home I had a sudden realization…What if Jaspert died! I never truly thought about it before, but if he died then Deryn would fall apart. Oh no no no no nooo! She would have no one else who truly believes in her and knows what she’s really like (the soldier part of her. Her mom and aunties obviously don’t care) other than Alek. She doesn’t really trust Newkirk enough but with Alek she would have someone to lean on, someone who really understands what she’s going through. That’s the kind of thing that could make her tell him her secret! Oh no no no! Now I’m freaking out! What if he does die?! What if she does tell him?! Ooohh Noooooooo!

340. Sorry to have another post but a couple of days ago my mom and my dad where telling me about my heritage and stuff. My dad’s mom is German which I already knew, but my dad’s dad’s family is originally from England! That is really really awesome because I am crazy about the UK. My mom’s family is 100% Czech which I also already knew but for some reason I didn’t make the connection that the Czech Republic was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire! So, in a way I’m half Austro-Hungarian! And who says dreams don’t come true! Also one my mom’s aunts got our history traced and found definite royalty! There’s a possibility that I am actually related to the Hapsburgs! I totally want to scream right now! aaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

341. I think that this is the barking best thing that’s happened to me for a while (other than reading the Leviathan series of course)! I feel so happy right now! Yaaaayyy!!

342. @Ridley Holy crap! That is FREAKING amazing. My last name is O’Connor, which was the last King of Ireland’s as well except I am in no way, shape, or form related to the line, but it’s cool for the rest of the O’Connor’s in the world haha

343. My stepmom’s Irish family gets red hair – but only with BOYS. :/ Any chance of red hair I would have from MY mother’s family is lost due to her Mexican blood.

344. my mom has red hair but I have my dad’s black hair and only in the sun can you see random red hair mixed in with the black.

345. I’m just blonde.
How boring.

I think I should have been a redhead though.
I have the fair skin and freckles and everything.

346. i’m an asian. we’re actually pretty typical, black hair, brown eyes. i might get contacts, though. And all my family is asian, so no chance for red/blond/brown hair. oh well, im happy with my asianess. and ridley, that is AWESOME!!!!!!! i tried looking up the grandchildren of sophie and franz, but i didn’t get anything. no wonder, they have like, 14 different names. each.

*Penguins will rule the world one day.*

347. Actually, the most common hair color in Japan is brown. (I am not implying that you are Japanese. That’s just the only country I know for sure. *whistles*)

Hitler actually has living relatives. Great nephews. None of them have children – they are all males and have decided against it. They’ve hidden it very well.

348. @Kylie Haha! Same! I do have red tones in my hair except (obviously) my hair is not red. It isn’t even blonde nor brown: it’s just LAME color. :/

349. @ Bridget – I don’t know if you know this already, but when you lol at someone and then contradict them, you come off condescending. As for the brown hair, it was something that I remember learning about in 7th grade (which was a long time ago), so yeah, I could be wrong. But unless you bring up a source, I’m going to be wary about the information.

350. @ Raibean Seriously, no need to be so defensive. Melmel was the one who identified her hair as black. I think your comment was ultimately pointless to the current topic, which I don’t even know why we aren’t talking about Behemoth, anyway. Do you not know the difference between brown and black? Unless they’ve died their hair, people of Asian-descent generally have black hair… as for the source you’re asking: Google. Besides, black hair is the most common in the world. Run and tell that, homeboy.

@baf Yes! I hate that word! Makes me feel as if I don’t wash my hair or something, as if “dirty” blonde is a bad thing: a hybrid or something. But I’m probably just being dramatic lol

351. @ Raibean Just to clarify: I didn’t mean to come off as a total beach in my posts, we’re all fans here, right? Right? Haha

352. @ Bridget – I didn’t mean to come off as defensive, in my head, I sounded totally calm and rational. Maybe we should all start using emoticons to indicate tone? 🙂 But before I posted, I DID look for a source for that on my own to see if I was wrong, but nothing came up. And without a source, it just sounds like an assumption based on what you’ve seen. But you’re right, it’s really pointless. I can’t even remember why I brought it up – I think to make Melmel feel a little more special about zir black hair?

Anyone like A Very Potter Musical?

353. i wonder how we managed to get so far off subject. i guess all outr theories have been discussed out.
@ raibean– i’ve heard of it but haven’t seen it.

354. Yeah, they have. I think. Maybe we’ll have more upon rereading. You should totally see it, it’s boss. 😀

355. I’ve seen AVPM as well as the sequel. It practically made my life (besides the actual Harry Potter books haha). Have you seen the “Glee” episode with Darren Criss? I haven’t seen it yet, but I heard the version of “Teenage Dream” and it was amazing! And yes I do think we should incorporate smileys and what not haha —> ;D

356. sadly, i just have very very dark brown hair…im south asian and so is like my whole family like ever…my geneology is so boring..
WHOA RIDLEY THAT IS SICKKKK! xD!!
ya we’re a little off topic here…though yes, we have sort of run out of theories…

357. I have dark brown hair with little gold and red bits that show up in the sun for no reason whatsoever.

I actually came up with another theory recently, what if Alek actually has a dream that Deryn is a girl and then if he chose to mention it to her he would be like: It’s silly, I mean that can’t be true… right? and Deryn’s like: Umm, actually… But even if he didn’t chose to tell Deryn about it he might tell Volger about it of something which would inevitably lead to the truth being told.

…Is it just me or does that sound really weak? I guess I’ve run out of any good theories too. Whenever I think about what might happen I always think about the favourite ones that I’ve come up with and my favourite ones that I’ve heard from you guys of course.

I’ve never heard of A Very Potter Musical, can someone tell me what it is please? Oh, and I did see that Glee episode and I really liked that song. I don’t particularly like the original but I kind of liked their version. Sorry but I don’t know how to do any emoticons so I won’t blame you if you misunderstand me or judge me or whatnot.

358. @ Ridley

(This is for your question about a Very Potter Musical)
It was just some collage kids who decided to make harry potter a musical and it is actually pretty funny in some parts. The bad thing is it’s very VERY bad (bad as in naughty, not bad as in terrible) I think you can watch it on youtube but like I said, it’s not a very clean musical.

359. Haha, yeah A Very Potter Musical has quite the language, but it’s all in good fun and the songs are surprisingly catchy. I mean, if you love Harry Freaking Potter than you’ll love A Very Potter Musical. 🙂

360. Okay, thank you.

This morning when I woke up, there was three inches of snow on everything! It’s all melted now but I still threw some snowballs and was tempted to make a snow angel but didn’t have enough time. Even though I really love snow this just stomped on my last shred of hope that I would be able to see Mr. Westerfeld in Vancouver on the 24th. I mean even though I have an orthodontist appointment on that day, and it’s a 6 hour drive through the mountains, and I have school, I was still hoping that there was some possibility of good weather, having school and my orthodontist appointment canceled, and my mom having a sudden change of heart, this snow has ruined all my chances of getting answers to any questions. But next year…

361. BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! I read it in three days and would hav finished it earlier but i was really busy anyway I couldnt stop thinking about no matter wat i did it was on my mind questions filled may head witch made it harder and harder to go withhout the book, questions like When will Deryn tell Alec her secret? Will Alec become emporer in the end? Will Alec fall in love with Deryn? Will Jasper come back into the story? When will Alec’s granduncle die? Does Lilith know about Dern’s secret? Did Count Volger tell Dr. Barlow about Deryn’s secret? Does the note from the pope matter anymore? and What adventures await them is Asia? still linger in my mind. It’s sorta like I’m trapped under a spell when Im reading the Leviathon Series and the only way to break free is to finish the book but wait, there’s another book. Its allmost like I need the books to surviveor else where I stopped will linger in my mind forever and haunt me untill its finished.

362. I thought that it might be cool if Deryn was scetching herself in the dresses that she was forced to wear and longer hair and Alec see’s it and says the girl is beautiful yet familiar and then asks who it is and then Deryn says ” I need to tell you something Alec something I haven’t told anyone before that has to do with that picture” then Alec says “What was that your girlfriend or some thing” then deryn says ” No Alec not even close, that girl is me.” then Alec says “wait what” then Deryn ” Alec I’m not Dylan Sharp, My name is Deryn Sharp and…” Alec ” wait no you you cant be a girl your the best soldier I ever met” Deryn ” I know it sounds crazy and you don’t want to believe it but this is who I am”

thats all I got and it might be a little different if it was actually in a book so ya i hope you like it

363. @ Lyndsey

I love that idea!! I really wish that scott would make deryn sketch more, she drew a lot in the first book but not so much in Behemoth.

364. While that theory is nice, Deryn is very aware of being discovered, so its’ doubtful that she would sketch that in the first place. Another thing is I doubt she would tell Alek unless she absolutely HAD to, which is why it’s more likely that he finds out from someone else. Gold star for creativity. I just brought up the Mulan theory.

365. I have a very strong feeling that the secret will be revealed in a most dramatic fashion, in order to maximize the climax. In a sort of, “The airplane is going to crash and we’re all going to die. I love you!” manner.
It will not be something simple like an “accident,” oh no, Scott knows much better than to do that!

Also, I think the letter will not make it- along with at least 1 of Alek’s crewmen. It *might* be Volger, due to his symbolic significance as Alek’s guide, and the necessity of him dying to allow Alek to mature. Or perhaps not Volger- because he is well-established and liked (even though Scott has a reputation of being unmerciful to these people anyways).

Alek and Deryn will DEFINITELY end up together, neither dying. However I am unsure about their unification in regards to what Alek’s prestigious title will allow him. By researching real-world, events, I’ve come up with Karl/ Charles I… so it may very well be that Alek forfeited the throne for Deryn- it doesn’t seem that important to him in any case.
Oh yeah! I also think that Deryn’s secret identity would be revealed rather early in the book, so that the pair have time to reflect and build a new relationship.

One last thing: to all those hypothesizing that Lilit is lesbian, bi, etc. etc., I have one thing to say: I am absolutely positive she is NOT. She used to have a crush on “Dylan,” but being a perceptive girl she soon picked up on Deryn’s suble feminism (slight temper, a fancy to Alek, etc.). To be certain; before she left, she kissed Deryn. That pretty much sealed the deal- Dylan is a girl. It was also a message for Deryn to hurry up and confess to Alek already- Lilit saw they are perfect for each other 🙂

366. @Flashy – I think the only part I disagree with you on is when you say the throne doesn’t seem that important to Alek. This throne is everything to him. It’s something that has been shoved in his face his whole life, yet could not be his, even though it should have been, and now he has a path to make it his. (I know a similar feeling – my mother is Mexican, but she doesn’t speak Spanish, so that part of my heritage has always been closed off to me.) As for textual support, I will remind you that Alek said he would have to “run a mile” (or something like that) if he liked Lilit and he wouldn’t put his children though what he did – he absolutely intends to take the throne.

As for the Karl/Charles thing (am I right in assuming that is who takes the throne instead of Sophie and the Archduke’s children?) it’s not entirely valid because in the real world, the Archduke didn’t get a reprieve from the Pope. So it could go either way, but I agree with the bittersweet ending person; he’s not going to get it, but he’s not going to give it up willingly, either.

367. @Raibean
I see what you mean. However, I see it as an enormous barrier- clearly Alek cannot have both: throne and love. It is simply impossible- merely a prince’s fancy will never push the royalties to accept such an unorthodox couple. Also, Alek seems to have taken a liking to the Leviathan, along with other Darwinist beasties. Would he go back to the Clankers, opressed in regard to love? I don’t think so (and nor would Deryn even convert to “Clanker”- it would be insufferable to her to be separated from the beasties :’D).
And once again with Scott’s reputation- does he ever have a cliche happily ever after? I wish! XD

368. The difference between our thinking is that I don’t view Alek and Deryn as in love. Even at the end of the books, if they end up together, I won’t think they’re in love. I will assume that they will love each other and live happily ever after, but that at the end of the books, they are not at that time in love. And Alek has a complex because of his parents – I don’t think he views love as the most important thing. He would try to get over Deryn and “focus on what’s important.” Especially with Volger behind him. Another thing is that if Alek is the ruler, he can RESHAPE the country to be a bit more Darwinistic. If he stops the war, it’s not as if that’s unpredictable, IMO. As for Deryn’s hate affair with Clankers – well, then you’re missing one of the underlying motifs of the books: them getting over their learned prejudices.

369. Reading these comments almost makes me want the new pope (or whoever is in charge now) to say “sorry, this letter is a fake” just so Alek can be with Deryn.

370. same here, amy-la. i have a strong feeling that the pope’s letter will not be validated, so alek is stuck being a prince(which to alek is bad, but considering the rest of us, its not)

@raibean
i sort of see what you mean about the not really in love thing, but i like happy endings, and all that stuff, so i am crossing my fingers for them to be in love and happy at the end of goliath. although scott has a bit of a reputation for SOME bittersweet endings.

@flashy
i think scott-la’s “clique ending” would probably be peeps/so yesterday
in so yesterday, maybe it was just me, but i really disliked jen. i just thought her character was a bit too nieve.

371. I feel like I need to come up with an ending that solves everything, but I don’t want to spoil the book if it has a different version than what I came up with and I prefer my version, or if I somehow freakily come up with the same thing that Mr. Westerfeld did and the book is spoiled for because I knew about it for ages before reading, but I need answers! I really feel for Mr. Westerfeld, it’s almost impossible to come up with something that solves all the questions and that feels perfect to you. I just can’t do it!

I might as well make it official: I am in love with Alek. I’m pretty sure that I told you guys that before but I figured I might as well make it official.

A funny thing is, if you look back at my first post (36) that first theory I mentioned is still my favourite one, with a few altercations of course. Instead of telling Deryn he is in love with her Alek still doesn’t actually know but he sort of almost kisses her, but Deryns sees what he’s doing and pushes him away from her. He never fully realizes what he did until she tells him in Dr. Barlows cabin. Long story short, she tries to stop being friends with him, they have a few awkward encounters before Dr. Barlow and Volger make her tell Alek her secret in Dr. Barlows cabin. This whole thing started because Alek was told Klopp’s condition was critical and he would likely die so Alek met with Deryn in the telescope room to tell her and he was crying and she was comforting him. They never actually kiss until they get into a big fight in Japan and Deryn realizes he really does love like she loves him and they kiss but then Deryn knocks them out cold before someone sees.

372. I actually wrote out that theory in a very long e-mail so my last post was actually just a summary of my writing. I also imagined this whole theory a while before I even thought to write it down but it still doesn’t do the whole thing justice. I’m not a very good writer. It’s missing a lot of detailes but for a summary I feel like I did a pretty good job. This post I’m currently writing really has no definite purpose and I guess that I’m just sort of talking to myself but writing what I am saying to myself. I really am weird.

A word of advice to anyone who will listen: never eat two sugar cubes, two pieces of cake, a brownie, candy, and three cans of pop. It made me so hyper I danced to almost every song I heard. I feel so embarrassed now even though I’m actually a good dancer and everyone loved it. Maybe this advice only applies to me?

For goodness sakes! It’s like this whole post is one big Note To Self!

373. I really would love a purely happy ending. 😕 But I also want more realistic writing… DILEMA *cries* But I would rather Alek and Deryn end up together than have Alek get the throne.

374. @Amy-la
Hahaha! I LOVE YOU XD

@Ridley
Wait, what? That was so confusing… Alek tries to kiss Dylan? O_O But I do very much agree with the ending. Although I’d think Alek rejects Deryn instead of vice-versa.

@Raibean
Oh, really? You don’t see them in love? Weird :O. I think it would kind of be strange otherwise. Didn’t all of Scott’s novels end semi-happily (protagonist in couple [David in Uglies])? Like, even… Lyra and Will from The Golden Compass “sorta” ended up together. Well, I dunno. If they don’t end up together my world wouldn’t make sense anymore and I’ll be flung into a deep abyss of uncertainty!

^oh yeah, sorry is all that sounds nerdy/verbal diarhhea, I’m just reeeeally tired after an enormous bio project x]

375. @ Flashy – There’s a difference between “in love” and “together.” I see them together, and eventually falling in love, but not in love at the time of the ending. It’s a little different with The Golden Compass, that really is a first love story. The difference to me is how long they’ve known each other, how they work together, how mature they are, etc. It depends a lot on the characters themselves. I can confidently say that, even at the end of Behemoth, Deryn is NOT in love with Alek. She likes him very, very much in a very powerful way, but she is not in love with him. One reason I’ve made this distinction is because Deryn and Alek are too mature to fall in love so immediately like that. Now, I haven’t read Goliath, so I’ll make my verdict on the ending then.

376. @Raibean
I agree that there is a definite difference between in love and together but I think that they are in love. But everyone thinks differently and maybe everyone is wrong and Mr. Westerfeld somehow makes them hate each other forever. Who knows! Deryn definitely really really likes Alek though which nobody can argue about. I also don’t think that maturity has to do with falling in love. Then again, if you’re imature you can fall in and out of love quickly? Now I’m feeling very confused!? Never mind you are right with the maturity but if it’s true love then it can happen quickly… or the realization does?

@ Flashy
Let me try and clear things up a little. Alek has unconciously fallen in love with Deryn. His hormones/pharamones/whatever know that she is a girl and so he really likes her but in his mind he has never fully realized it yet. He sort of tries to kiss her because his head is on her shoulder and he is crying because of Klopp but his sobs slow and he starts to lift his head up along her neck, and he turns towards her, and he also starts to sort of lean on her and press her back into the wall a little. Deryn freaks out a little and shoves him away and moves to the other side of the room. I hope this helps?

377. @ Ridley – It’s not just maturity, it’s the way that they’re both mature, if that makes any sense. I know they’re only 15, but things were different back then, of course, so instead of learning the rules of society and becoming normal people for their age, they’ve had adult responsibilities such as careers and espionage forced on them, which, IMO, stunts their focus on things like relationships and love and building a family, even though those are normal thoughts for their age (during the 1910’s). And it’s not “oh, they either love each other or they hate each other,” it’s they WILL fall in love, just not during the time the book covers. Even if it’s “true” love (which, well, let’s be honest, I don’t believe in it – not the way everyone else means when they say it, at least), it doesn’t happen more quickly than any other kind. It has to grow properly. Science says that it’s a crush until 4 months have passed, then after that, for all measurable purposes, you’re in love.

378. i would really love a happy ending but i would be unhappy with overly simplistic unrealistic ending.
About the whole are they in love or just together? i’m not sure. being ‘in love’ varies from person to person or from situation to situation. especially with teens. (i hope i don’t sound condescending, i am a teen) that’s why it’s hard to tell with deryn and alek. alek can’t love deryn unless he knows her secret or he’s gay; hormones aren’t powerful enough to make him actually love her.
once he finds out they will probably eventually get together but im not sure if they will be in love. i agree with raibean, love sometimes takes a little longer to come than a really, really strong bond. i guess we’ll just have to wait til goliath to really find out though!!

379. Totally agree with baf. I also don’t think you sound condescending, but that could just be me. I was trying to display that, too. (Though when it comes to teens and love irl, I can be VERY condescending, despite the fact that I’m 18.)

380. Aggh, I had this well thought out theory all typed out and sumbmitted yesterday, but it didn’t work!

Here we go again…

Alek finds out Deryn’s secret and gets mad. Deryn will do something totally badass and he’ll realize she is still his best friend. Then his feelings will develope and they will get together.
Alek then does get the throne, therefore he has to go back to Austria.
But Deryn goes back into the airforce.
So they will say their goodbyes promising that “This wont be the last time we see each other” yadda yadda.. then go their different ways.

Bittersweet.

381. @ kylie– though that is a great theory if something like that happened i would probably scream and throw the book at the wall.
@raibean– thanks!

382. @ Kylie- I would DIE if Alek and Deryn got together and then he had to leave. I want a happily ever after ending (though I highly doubt that will happen) and Scott’s books always seem to have a bitter-sweet ending. WHY DOES NOTHING EVER TURN OUT AS IT SHOULD!!

383. @ baf
Oh, I would DEFINITELY throw my book at the wall.
Then pick it back up and apologize. 😉

@ Amy-la
Maybe Scott will surprise us on purpose with a happy endind because we are all expecting a bad one.
Not bad…. just not perfect. 😛

I wonder if he reads these posts.
That’d be so cool.

384. @ Kylie- I really hope your right. But as long as Alek finds out Dylan is a girl named Deryn (and is not totally horrified by the fact), and develops feeling for her (not exactly love but close enough), and does NOT leave just so he can rule an empire, then I will be satisfied and promise never to through one of Scott’s books at the wall ever again just to pick it up and start reading again… maybe.

385. I think Alek has already subconsciously “fallen in love” (or developed affection) with her. There are… subtle signs. 🙂

Going back to the old argument… you know, it suddently HIT me that they very well may NOT be “in love.” Like uglies- I doubt it was real real love (like Golden Compass, Twilight *puuuke*, etc.). Because these books are sorta teenage-based. Yeah….. Bah! I don’t know how to explain it Dx. A very strong fancy? But not exactly like the deep bond between characters in other books aimed toward perhaps older kids. And half of it comes from the fact that Deryn is practically MOONING over Alek and he’s just the indifferent boy ;D.

Hmm… If Scott makes it so obvious… maybe it IS a trap! And the ending will be heartwrenching. Bittersweet, like Kylie said. (although I still kinda doubt that’ll happen, because I predict very negative response from fans!)

And now I will do my spazzy fangirl thing.
KISS KISS KISS 😀

386. @ flashy– i think that deryn’s romantic feeling toward alek is the teenage-type, whirlwind, crazy affection/love backed by a ver strong friendship. i don’t think they are actually “in love” (especially not Alek) but who knows??
@ amy-la– if they don’t kiss i will go absolutely insane

387. I don’t think Alek likes her like that yet. People don’t realize how thin the line between “best friends” and “couples” can be. If Alek knew Deryn is a girl, then I would totally be with you. But since he doesn’t, I don’t believe it.

I RELISH THE MOMENT WHEN ALEK REALIZES HE LIKES DERYN MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

388. I think Alek would either freak out like:”I told you everything! How could you not trust me with this! After all we’ve been through!”, or he would not believe it at all and need some kind of proof. Everything would likely be really awkward until something happens that makes everything all right again.

@ Raibean
I can’t wait for that moment! So great! Hee hee hee (creepy giggle)

389. I think that Alek will feel angry, dumb, and betrayed; as if he a stupid little kid who’s been lied to. Deryn will also be mortified and she will go do some crazy/badass/corageous thing in which she either risks or life or achieves something amazing (or both). Alek will then realize that she’s he same person and also his strange feelings will be explained. 😀
And they will kiss in the climax or something, maybe when there’s a battle going on (so they think’s they’re gonna die anyways).

390. im totally agreeing with ocelot on this one. it just makes sense to me!
oh, and everyone should make a pact to keep commenting on this thread, even after scott-la makes a new post and this one goes to the “older posts” page. i wonder how many comments his website can take………….
😉

391. I don’t think he’s going to be outright angry. I think he’ll be a little resentful, but I think his biggest feeling will be awkwardness. He won’t trust her, but I think it will be a little more about sexism than “why didn’t you tell me?” You guys probably don’t want to think that, but that’s how it was back then. I think he’s going to start wondering if she likes him, though, and THAT’S how everything gets started.

392. Do you think Alek would feel the same way if he found out himself rather then Deryn telling him? Would he still be mad/upset/resentful I think I would rather him prove that he is not such a dummkoph by figuring it out himself.

393. What I described was Alek finding out himself because I honestly can’t see Deryn telling him. I can see other people telling him, but not Deryn.

394. If Alek has a truse issue Daryn could remind him of the end of leviathan. She DID try to tell him. She was just…interrupted.

My favorite theory is him finding out cuz of the balloon story. Then he’ll think about that story and her telling him…yada yada.yada. Then he’ll think Oh, “she” tried to tell me. He is weirded out & slightly angry, avoids shortly, then tries to keep their friendship. Daryn pulls away b/c of the fears she has mentioned. Something else happens. They are forced to work to gether, then they fall for each other

395. i don’t think deryn would ever tell alek her secret. Volger might, just to cause a rift between them. I think alek would be angry (Why didn’t she tell me?!?!?!!?), indignant (I can’t believe this!!!), hurt (i told her everything!!) and sexist (how could a girl *snotty tone* even do this?!?!?!). Probably a mix. o yeah and awkward.

396. I don’t think Deryn will end up telling him.
She came so close like, twenty times. If she didn’t do it then, she isn’t doing it now.

397. I decided to go back into the older entries to see how far I could get. I only had enough time to make it to August 12 2009, where there should have been the old countdown clock for when Leviathan originally came out, but it refused to load! Why!? I love the countdown clocks! If I knew how to make my own, I would sooo have one counting down to Goliath! Of course it would only countdown to the start of October since we don’t know the exact date yet. I wonder how you make one? Hmmm…

398. I just looked up the saying of the Hapsburgs: Bella gerant alii, tu Felix Austria, nube. It means: Let others wage war, you Happy Austria, marry. I love that!

399. So on Youtube my channel is evilkarmaangel and I’ve been doing reviews of the stories in Zombies vs. Unicorns. (It’s Justine-related for sure, but not quite Scott-la related since I haven’t gotten to his story yes. :P)

400. OMG @Flashy TOTALLY AGREE HOW “It will not be something simple like an “accident,” oh no, Scott knows much better than to do that!” (post 509) sooo true!
The bittersweet ending is very aggravating, and it makes me sorta scared, because considering how obsessed i have become after Behemoth came out, if Goliath goes and kills me like that, I would seriously like fall apart xD
I think the Hapsburg saying means let others start the war, you will end it (by ‘marrying’ or making an alliance) if that’s what it means, it SO SUITS ALEK!

401. @ Cassidy– that may suit alek but i don’t think he could make an alliance by marryin deryn. sucks for them

402. @ Cassidy- I agree, Deryn may be a darwinist but she is not royalty or even a common nobleman… woman. Not a very good alliance if you ask me.

403. Personally, when sealand turns into a country at the end of the war, Daryn should totally become a noble. My sister’s math teacher last year was a lord of sealand

404. @ clareh- I wish Deryn could become a noble, but how could that possibly happen? She just gets a letter one day from her mum that says “hey, I should have told you but your the princess of whatever land”

405. @amy-la
You can actually pay around $50 today to become a lord, lady, baron, or baroness of sealand which is a “country” that declared it’s independence from england after WWII. It is an abandoned British fort in international waters. They even declared a king. No, I’m not lying, although my comment was rather facetious. Not many countries actually recognize it as another country, but some do.

406. Agh, my post didn’t work again!
I have no luck with this thing it seems.

I was just wondering, what are your thoughts on if Alek or Deryn dies?
I don’t think either of them will, but I’m not ruling anything out.
So, what if either of them die? How do you think it will happen?

407. The only time I’ve heard of Sealand is in humon’s comics on deviantart. And it was protrayed as one of England’s children (the actual “small child” ones, which means it’s not its own country, it’s an island). Humon is Danish, though, so that will reflect whether or not she views it as its own country.

408. Neither will die. Because neither needs to die :D. It simply wouldn’t make literary sense because no conflict would be solved, and also such an event will not contribute to the theme. However, if somebody WAS to die, it would be Alek and not Deryn. His life is VERY significant, while hers isn’t.
That’s a really good discussion point though. I’m sure quite a few people may believe that a main character will die in these books!

Do you guys see these books as mainly a story about Alek, or about Deryn?
(Personally I imagine it a bit more of Deryn’s story, although I don’t like her as much as I like Alek.)

409. I agree if either of them die, it would be Alek.
All I can say is, he better not!

I can’t pinpoint who the story is mainly about. I think it is equally about both Alek and Deryn.

410. ^^ *WERE to die

It would be Alek, but because his life is insignificant. I don’t see why you would call it significant; is it because he’s “royal”? Even if he’s technically the heir (that wasn’t certain before the pope died and it’s even less certain now – after all, he still had to wait to reveal it until the Emperor died, and that would certainly cause a Civil War in Austria-Hungary, so it wasn’t certain). He has no family. No job. He has basically one outlet in life. Despite being a huge part of the story, that’s what makes it “neater” to have him die, which is why I call his life insignificant. Deryn, on the other hand, has a job, family, and her death would make more of an emotional mess for the characters (especially since they would find out she’s a girl), and it’s a mess that would be hard to convey since it doesn’t do much for the plot in the great scheme of things. Deryn’s death would be negative. Alek’s would be neutral. (In reference to the advancement of the plot.)

411. It said in the book that the saying of the Hapsburgs was because they gained more power through marrige than through war. Neither of them should die! I swear, if they do die… Mr. Westerfeld would have many enraged fans on his hands…
If one has to die though, I actually think maybe Deryn. Actually because of the disorder it would cause. It would totally change the direction of the story and would be the biggest twist you could find. Also she seems more likely to sacrifice herself than Alek does. And Volger wants Alek to stay safe so that he can rule Austria-Hungary, whilst Deryn is always getting into dangerous circumstances. But still… I swear…

412. if one of them has to die i don’t know who it would be. both of them are brave and would sacrifice themselves. both would be an emotional mess if the other died (but alek might feel betrayed as well). i don’t know who would be better to die. personally, i hope they both survive. it would kill me if they died

413. noooooo…. my enormous, eloquently written post got deleted T^T

so i’ll just quickly restate (warning: verbal diarhhea ahead):
i think that alek would be the one to die PRECISELY because he’s a noble. why would there be a huge dramatic plot twist if deryn dies? an inferior midshipman’s life is worth NOTHING on the great scale of war. everything would continue, perhaps pointlessly (cuz the other characters would have nothing to do… ie. alek would not be with beasties; everything would break apart…). BUT! if alek were to die the war would probably change dramatically, seeing as his life is such a crucial part of the plot. also deryn would be heartbroken and it’d be fascinating ro read from her perspective (wheras if deryn died i don’t think alek would be as dramatic). personally, i also feel closer to the story when deryn narrarates (she’s my primary main charrie)

p.s. ha, ha, ha, raibean i would try to do that to but even now i know that i my resistance would inevitably snap and i’d read anything scott writes! XD

i wonder what would happen if BOVRIL died O_O (like hedwig…)’: )

414. @ Raibean
That’s what I said after the end of Specials.
But then I went right on ahead and picked up Leviathan.

415. Scott says that in a story there should be a personal, and a wider story arc. Wide=war
Personal=daryn + Alec

Scott westerfeld can come up with a better resolution than to kill one of them off

They make it at least to mexico. He says “they’re” heading to america and mexico. They=Alec+daryn

Math=truth

416. ^ Meh, I wasn’t much a David fan either.
Man, I should read those again, I forget everything!
I tried to get Uglies for my English ISU, but my teacher wouldn’t let me.

417. My assumption is that Alek and Deryn solve the war. As for Alek being “important” to the war… No, he’s not. This is what I said before, Alek is ONLY important to the war if he’s the CONFIRMED heir of Austria. Which means the emperor has to die. Which means the Pope has to confirm the document. Which means there is a civil war and Austria-Hungary pulls out of the war, which, yes, will put everything into chaos, but that’s if Alek LIVES. If he dies, he’s still changed the war and Austria will probably stay out of the war if there’s a Civil war. That means Germany will either stay in the Great War or pull into the Civil War, which would, in all likelihood, just change the focus of the Great War from one to retribution to one of deciding the Darwinist/Clanker powers. So nothing really changes. Alek dying doesn’t do anything to the war.

418. So, say Alek is confirmed the heir. Then he would be important to the war.
But, Alek generally will still need a lot of guidance and/or help. I think Deryn would be important to him, judging from the last scene in Behemoth when Alek aks Deryn to run away with him. He said “I can’t do it without you”.

So maybe, if Deryn were to die, it would affect Alek, if he were to become the heir.

419. “Alek is ONLY important to the war if he’s the CONFIRMED heir of Austria”
-umm… isn’t he? he’s their last hope; at least as far as anybody is concerned right now
And what you described is proof of Alek’s impact on the plot :P.

420. IF daryn were to die it would be a HUGE plot twist, it would compleatly screw up the personal story arc about her & alec & her being a girl and all, but it would have little effect on the war. IF she died it would have a lot of significance, just not for the war (unless there was some huge scandal that she was a girl and a decorated female soldier at that)

421. @ocelot

no he isn’t the confirmed heir. far from that. About 4 people know about the pope’s letter that might be invalid undr the new pope

422. i think that if either one of them died it would have a huge impact on the other. Alek would only make an impact if he was the well-known heir. Deryn wouldn’t make an impact, but she could make a scandal.

423. Say Alek is confirmed the heir, Deryn’s death would affect him greatly because she is really the only friend he has. I’m assuming he relies on her somewhat judging from the last scene in Behemoth when he says “I can’t do this without you” and asks her to run away with him.

So, if Alek is the heir and Deryn dies, that will generally mess him up and effect the war.

424. @Ocelot – I explained why he wasn’t. FIRST the emperor has to die or he’s DEFINITELY not the heir. THEN the Pope has to say yes. Which makes it highly unlikely. His death on its own is nothing to the war (barring some awesome plot twist that would make everything possible). We know those things aren’t going to happen because the book is too short.

425. I’m not going to bother arguing with you because I do not agree, so it’s no use making arguments which will not be taken seriously.

Can we just leave it as NEITHER will die? I believe it’s quite obvious 🙂
… (but I still think that at least 1 of Alek’s crewmen will definitely die)

426. @baf- agreed wholeheartedly :D.

So guys.
Any chance Bovril dies? D: (IMO no XD; cuz Scott isn’t the type of author like Suzanne Collins who kills of all of her characters in crusades just to illustrate the brutalness of war)

427. @ flashy– thanks. If bovril dies it would be awful. what if he realizes something’s gonna happen because he’s perspiracious and he sacrifices himself. :((((((
Do you like The Hunger Games??

428. @Ocelot
I am 100% with you with neither dying, and also with one of the Clanker crew dying. I’m still unhappy that someone will die no matter what, but I consider the crew a better option than Alek/Deryn.

@baf
My friend is absolutely crazy about The Hunger Games! I haven’t read them yet because I’m like 22nd in the request line on my library system, but I can’t wait! They sound pretty good!

I don’t think Bovril would sacrifice himself. It just seems to weird.
We still don’t know the real purpose of the Perspicacious Loris yet. And their trip to Japan doesn’t have to do with it because LSL (Last Surviving Loris) has bonded to Dr. Barlow already. Hmm. I guess we’d know if Dr. Barlow and Volger have a thing if LSL starts to like Volger even though he hates the beasties.
I hate all these unanswered questions! It just bugs me so much! Why exactly are they going to Japan? Will Alek rule Austria? When will he find out Deryn’s secret? How? Will they fall in love? What about Lilit? Jaspert? Who dies? Why? Why? Why?!

429. OH GOD.
I was so sad/angry when the book ended and Alek still didn’t know about Deryn being a chick.
I was all psyched about possible romance then BAM book is over. No romance. Terrible stuff. Now I’m going to be all impatient till the next one comes out.

430. @ ridley– they are really good!! lots of romance!! that’s a good idea about finding out if volger and barlow have a thing if the loris bonds to both of them

431. I love the hunger games too! 😀 I used to REALLY REALLY like the books, and recommend them to all my friends (typically it went like: “have you read uglies? well if you did and you liked it, you’ve GOT to read THG. it’s a tiny bit not as good as uglies, but still epic”. However… I was verrrrry disappointed with the last book, for loooots of reasons :(.

OOH! maybe barlow’s loris WILL do that! that’d be really nice. i kinda thought that Bovril was the only one who can do the (ie. the most human..?), but perhaps the other can too. i do think there’s something going on between them. XD ah well, all the more reason for Volger to DIE :\\\…

432. Finally finished it tonight (and no, I haven’t been reading this for two months!), and _man_, was that a compelling read. If memory serves, not quite as good as Leviathan, but only because the world and characters were no longer brand new and, as mentioned numerous times in the posts above, the titular behemoth did not prove to have a spectacular role in the story after all. Still had me reading for hours on end, though, not to mention leaving me all too eager for this Goliath you commenters speak of (where did you hear the name?).

I’m actually using this for a book report due on the 2nd about social issues, believe it or not, and I can’t wait to get cracking at it first thing tomorrow.

Thanks for yet another enrapturing novel, Scott, and definitely keep up the good work in the years ahead!

433. I actually thought that the Behemoth had a large, though less visible, role in the book. I mean, the Behemoth sort of makes everything that happens in the second half of the book possible, and arguably a well-portioned amount of the first half as well.

434. The Behemoth did have a large role in the book. It just doesn’t seem that big because Leviathan was basically centered around the Leviathan, and most of the book actually took place either on or around the Leviathan. But the Behemoth doesn’t seem to be used as much as the Leviathan and I would have liked to acually see more photos of it, and really know what it looks like and what it does. Like how we know that the Leviathan is an ecosystem and most of the parts of it are described.
The Behemoth almost seems to be some freaky sea monster thing. I was amazed when I saw the illustration of it. I would have liked to see more.

435. It’s not just in Behemoth, the Behemoth played a role in Leviathan a little too (we just never heard the name) so it had the role for most of the series, so it was in a little bit of Leviathan and basically all of Behemoth.

436. Why?! The auction ended and I didn’t get to check out the print! And my mom says that I could have bought it too probably! First I missed Vancouver and know this! This is torture! Why Mr. Westerfeld?! Why?!

437. Yeah, do you guys think the Tesla will be in the next book? And do you think Newkirk will find out that Dylan is Deryn?

438. @ raibean- I would looooove if newkirk found out that deryn was a girl before alek!! it would be soo amazingly awkward!!

439. What if Newkirk found out that Volger was blackmailing “Dylan” so then he confronted her, but she still didn’t tell. Then he told Barlow who told him not to worry about it, but Barlow puts two and two together and Newkirk finds out via spying. Then he assumes Alek knows, then confronts HIM so Alek finds out.

440. @Raibean haha, I’ve actually been hoping that Newkirk would be the first to find out (let’s hope he’s a good enough friend to keep the secret, though!) 😀

441. I find that newkirks character may be there just to give daryn someone to save.

OK, That’s too harsh, but that seems to happen quite often.

442. Well, Newkirk does two things: he’s character fodder like the captain, and he keeps Deryn from being only friends with Alek. We also get to see some Monkey Luddite mindset there.

443. @clareh I wasn’t counting seeing the Monkey Luddite mindset as “doing something.” It’s not entirely important, especially since they’re so far from England and this isn’t a book that’s supposed to be revealing about society, but it does add a little realism.

444. She said “Thanks for the clarification (masculine gender)”
And I jokingly said “Wouldn’t it be for the clarification (feminine gender)?”

445. I don’t think that Newkirk and Deryn should ever happen, and I hope that it never will. I am very much for Alek and Deryn and always will be. I think that it’s a very interesting and unique way for Alek and Newkirk to find out but it seems a bit complicated, but I like it. I like the Tesla Cannon and what it added to the story and would like to see something like that again that adds a twist to the plot. Perhaps Tesla’s “Death Ray”?

446. WOW I haven’t been here for long – proud to see you guys are still growing this convo! I was busy with homework for a while…so anyways, Newkirk+Deryn=EW. Not even to get Alek to realize he likes her. Maybe another guy, but not Newkirk! @Raibean – brilliant theory though!! But I still would prefer that Alek find out that Deryn’s being blackmailed instead of Newkirk…I really don’t like Newkirk much, do I? :S SORRY NEWKIRK FANS but he’s too meh for my taste. Like, @ clareh, yes he seems to be just someone to help Deryn prove she’s all brave and boy-ish…

447. I’m not sure how much I like my theory, I just wanted to create a new one. I DO want to see more of Newkirk in the next book simply because that would make him more “real.” Even if he’s not being seriously involved or upgraded to a bigger player, I would like to see more interactions, what it’s like for “normal” soldiers and stuff like that. An Alek/Newkirk friendship wouldn’t be out of line, either…

448. @Cassidy
I totally agree with you! He can be kind of meh at times and he doesn’t really like the Clankers and sees them as enemies, so I definitely don’t see a friendship there (sorry Raibean), but maybe if he showed up more and got more of a personality and everything…but I don’t see how something like that could happen. I don’t really think that he is there JUST to prove that Deryn can make a barking good boy.
@Raibean
I do want to see Newkirk become more real though.

I feel like I’m asking too much. With wishing Lilit and Jaspert will come back, possibility of Lilspert, a great way for Alek to find out Deryn’s secret, a kiss, more Newkirk, what is the real purpose of Bovril and LSL, Barlow, more machines (Tesla’s “Death Ray” hopefully), another giant fab (Goliath?), answers to all the questions.

Is the Goliath another fab (which I think it would be) or is it a machine? It would make sense to be a fab.

449. Goliath has to be a fab fo sho. All the other ones have been. (I thought the Goliath was mentioned in Behemoth.)

450. I don’t remember seeing the Goliath mentioned. The Behemoth was mentioned in Leviathan, but the Goliath wasn’t mentioned in Behemoth. When I finished reading Behemoth I was clueless as to what the next book was called, but then people were refering to it as Goliath and then I saw the thing at the bottom of the Leviathan page that said look out for the next book in the series Goliath! Even the Behemoth wasn’t mentioned by name.

451. Yes, I would like Newkirk to have a personality, but FOR NOW, until that happens, he is really just a mehish side character. Yes, he isn’t ONLY there for the purpose of making Deryn stand out (@Raibean post 621) but for now he is mostly just a thing to make the setting more real…
Alex+Newkirk could work, but only if Scott really needs to to push a point forward. And yes, @Ridley, I do feel like we’re asking too much…what I would hate was if I expected a whole lot of things to happen but they didn’t and I would be sad FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER…scary thought xD

452. gotta say, LOVED this! As random as it was to visit the ottoman empire.. I kinda liked it. a lot. BUT I wanna know if we’ll ever get to London town!! We’re going to …Japan? .. next? random? I’d LOVE to get some more in-depth action in london, rather than just the touch-down/pick-up of Dr Barlow.

and YES I concur so much on “Varlow” = amen!!! They’re the perfect amount of snooty/classism and they’d hate each other but complement each other perfectly.

And on the subject of Lilit…aside from the fact that that’s a Israeli “night-demon”, haha, I really didn’t like her. I mean, it seemed obvious her whole purpose in the plot was to make Deryn jealous, BUT then I did like the twist with her luvvin Dylan/while you think she’s gotta know it’s DERYN underneath that swagger. I feel like Lilit is that spunky lesbian action hero we, er, NEVER see these days. I’m not really pro-Lilit, just saying, props to Mr. Westerfeld for NOT making me hate her!!!

Gotta say, LOVED BOVRIL. He’s my new fave. I want him!! He can ride on my shoulder all day long and make snooty jokes at me!!

And the action, oh, just grand..this was such a lark. Don’t know HOW ON EARTH I’m going to be able to wait a whole ‘nother year!!!

Oh and the illustrations were great, except where was the dragon-faced Orient Express? in its illustrations I could not decipher any hint of a dragon face. I took the illustrations as almost stand alone’s cause if you focused on the book’s description they didn’t always match up, not for me anyways…am I alone in this?

& Katie-La, from wwaaaaay back at the top, yes, I too had withdrawals whenever I was away from this book!

453. I thought Goliath was the second creature the Brits made for the Ottoman Empire.

@BookWormBeauty – Lilit is NOT an Israeli night demon. In Judaism (which explains the “Israeli” part), Lilit(h) was the first wife of Adam. Yes, before Eve. And Lilit refused to be dominated by Adam and didn’t want to have sex with him on top – she wanted side to side or something to show they were equal. But Adam raped her (it’s still rape if you’re married) so Lilit ran away and tricked God himself into telling her his name. Which, if you’re familiar with Judaism and other old beliefs, knowing someone’s true name is a huge thing. So Lilit said God’s name and it gave her wings – she flew out of Eden. God sent an angel to bring her back, threatening her and saying that if she didn’t come back, 1000 of her children would die every day. But she still refused, so she joined the demons and God created Eve. Basically, it was said that Lilit comes into houses and suffocates the infants living there because she’s mad about her children being killed.

454. @baf – Yeah, I saw it on a History Channel special on stuff that was cut from the Bible by the Catholic church when it was assembling it after Jesus’ death.

@Amy-la – Well it’s one of those explanations for infant mortality. Even in this day and age, thousands of children just forget how to breathe when they’re sleeping. Either laying on their back or their stomach has a higher percentage; I can’t remember which. All I know is my babies will sleep on their sides, haha.

455. Wow. I didn’t know that.
@Cassidy
How does it fit into the story? Lilit doesn’t go around suffocating children!
@BookWormBeauty
The locations aren’t random. They go where the mission takes them (whatever the mission really is), other than their crash landing in Switzerland of course (but without that Deryn and Alek would never have met!). Also quite a bit happened in London. The entire British Air Service entry thing all took place in London, including the whole free ballooning on a Huxley thing which was awesome. I also think that the illustrations do match up, but I remember first reading the part where Lilit kissed Deryn and how I just kind of thought “okaay?” when I first read it and then I turned the page and saw the illustration and it really hit me, I was like “Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! What the heck!? Why Deryn!?”. It was a totally emotional experience.
@Raibean
I remember hearing about the babies forgetting to breath thing, and I’m pretty sure that it’s when their lying on their back that they have the largest percentage of deaths. I might be wrong though but I’m pretty sure.

456. WHOAAA im back for some reason unbenunced to me but really i do think the book was great and that it was awesome but i do think the deryn kissing lilit thing is still quite lesbain and hello all i got back from an insanely long trip wich took me from canada to mexico and man oh man am i tired i cant belive you guys are STILL coming up with stuff to talk about after *scrolls up* …. 647 posts O_O u guys have quite the imageination (sorry for my spelling)

457. oh i just was reading the other most recent posts and i think thats frekin awesome i wish i was related to them some how 😀 and raibean have you seen the FMA movie conquerer of shambala sorry for my spelling (again)

458. @Kokiris – yeah, (I think) but not for a while now. Are you keeping up with Brotherhood? I’ve seen them all now, but I saw most of it in Japanese. Picked up a single swearword – Kso. (Damn, f*ck, all that stuff).

So BESIDES Varlow, what do you guys think we’ll learn about Barlow and Volger in the next one?

459. @raibean yeah i have been but at first it was just on adult swim (where i saw it anyway) im to the episode: father where they fight the dwarf in the flask homunculus (for the first time) oh and i have been noticeing some of those cus words :s if you wanna see shambala and all of the first series go to just dubs . net i mite try to find ya a link some time they have all the anime in english they also have gundam gurran lagan kekkiashi bleach inuyasha etc. and a bunch of others

on to more things yeah i think theres much more we will learn from them maybe a stroy on why they inlisted in what and where they came from and stuff …..

460. i think they have up to episode 39 in english on FMA brother hood but they have all of the first series of the original FMA

461. @Raibean

I want to learn more about the challenges Barlow faces being a woman in male-dominated professions.

I also want more of Alek’s back-story and his parent’s back-stories which will most likely be introduced through volger.

462. @kokiris
Are you Canadian? I am too!

Something weird is that I actually have some FMA songs on my Ipod. There’s nothing quite like singing along to a song in Japanese and having no real idea what you’re saying. My favourite one is Again by Ogawa Mika (I actually know almost all the words to this one and can sing them when I am listening to the song (still don’t know exactly what they mean though)). I am just totally into Japanese music right now. I originally got the songs from my brother but now I’ve bought some myself as well.

I really want to know more about Dr. Barlow’s mission. I also want to know more about what Volger thinks about the others (Alek, Dr. Barlow (does he really like/love her?), Deryn). I would definitely like to learn more about the history of both Alek and Deryn or even more about how the history of their world differs from ours. I would also like to learn more about the proccess of creating a fab.

463. @Ridley she doesn’t strangle babies, but she seems like the type that would if the rebellion depended on it…xD JUST KIDDING Lilit is the type to want to be equal with her husband, and is also the type to be smart enough to go and trick God (:
@Ridley again COOL I’m canadian too 😛
I thought that it would be HORRIBLE to wait this long for Goliath, but it actually isn’t that bad…but its only been what, 2 months! Shoot I thought it had been longer…urrggh.
@clareh yeah, I’m pretty sure Barlow has had some of the same experiences as Deryn, I want to see them bond at last xD

464. Oh my god! I just got an e-mail back from Scott Westerfeld! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!
Of course it doesn’t really answer all of my questions (or any regarding the book and my question about Deryn’s eye colour (I just can’t seem to let that one go)), it’s still amazing to get a reply from you favourite author! Unfortunately he said that there is no real movie that he is planning and he in no way could get me the part of Deryn Sharp. I’ll just have to keep an eye out and see if I can get an audition or something somehow.
@Cassidy
Don’t worry, the time will be gone sooner than you think! I’m actually surprised that it’s already been two months, it feels like just yesterday that I finished reading Behemoth…

That fan art is really cool!

465. wonder were raibean went of to well … so ridley um … no i am German but you are close i was in canada because i just got bored with home and then went to canada because um ….. well no one here is from the FBI right well…. probably no one is so i guess i can say why i went to canada …….. because, weed that is the only reason pluse i was bored with germany so i spent a long time in canada with my weed……. that i ovcourse finished and went to mexico then back to germany ….. i think i went to mexico because of the fire works they have such good explosives in mexico well thats basically why i went to canada and sorry no i am not canadian but wow i wonder were your brother got the songs ….. do you know? ps:i saved up enough money for 1 flight and 8 bus rides then 1 boat so yeah! awesome but now i’m almost brook i still have meh food though ….

466. and ridley WHOOOAAAA he …. he , he repled omg! that is so awesome except that thre not doing the movie 🙁

467. and sorry for triple post but if no one new, just sayin … the link i posted was to a anime site full of episodes of anime series (you can watch the animes on video players you know) so if no one new just sayin cus no one really said anything even though that site is awesome wonder if raibeans there?

468. @kokiris
My brother got them on iTunes and that’s where I’ve gotten all my other Japanese/other language songs as well. It sucks that you only came to Canada for weed. I didn’t even know people came here for just that. Of course a couple of years back there was a person a few cities away who got busted for having a poppy field secretly growing underneath their deck or something. There was another case like that actually… But I’m still very anti-that stuff and don’t take it personally but I think that what you did was stupid. Darn, that sounds super personal…But on another note what part of Canada did you go to?

@Raibean
I’m glad to know your still reading this. For a day or so there I thought everyone else had abandoned this thread. Stupid overreactions…

I just found out that you can order prints of the illustrations from Leviathan/Behemoth online on Keith Thompson’s web site. When I first looked there a while ago you couldn’t do that but now you can which is awesome! To bad my birthday and Christmas are already gone. Now I’ll have to save up my money and buy them myself, which I probably would have done anyway. He doesn’t have all of the best ones in my opinion but he has some at least.

469. Does anyone have any ideas or anything about any of the books? It would be nice to have something new to think about. Is the fourth book going to be a companion novel?

470. I won’t be online at midnight so I’d just like to say, Happy New Year everyone! According to this spoiler clock it says it’s already 2011, but here it’s still only 6:30pm on the last day of 2010! Happy New Year!

471. @Cassidy
Isn’t it awesome!
Sorry, but could you tell me what ‘an* gr’ means?

If the fourth book is a companion novel than that means that it’s written in a different perspective right? Since the other books are all written from the perspective of two different people (so brilliant!) than that would be the same for the fourth. Maybe it would be from a Dr. Barlow/Count Volger perspective? Interesting idea, and similar to the original.

472. @Ridley
LOL I was trying to correct my previous post which was supposed to say “Enlarged, and with AN explanation too!” so I corrected it and said grrrr. except I was in a hurry so it turned out as gr. Hope that helps (;
@Ridley again
WOW! I never thought of that…Barlow/Volger would be AWESOME!

473. Does anyone think that there could be a traitor/double agent anywhere. I mean, this is about a war! There are spies in wars…

474. @Cassidy
Sorry, I just wasn’t sure what you meant.

@Clareh
Nobody amongst the current characters strikes me as really traitorous (but someone might say Alek is traitorous for being friends with people who are supposedly enemies), but I think that if anyone will cause trouble in that sort of sense it would be Volger. He wouldn’t hesitate to tell Deryn’s secret or abandon the Leviathan if it meant that Alek would rule Austria-Hungary (even though Alek himself would never do such a thing). Technically speaking, it’s not traitorous or double agent-like or anything but that, but it’s definitely a possibility. As for spies, maybe Mr.Westefeld will add one into the plot to try and turn things around? Nobody among the current characters surely, but maybe someone new?

475. What kind of people do you think we’ll meet in Japan? There were the anarchists in the Ottoman Empire but who will there be in Japan/wherever else they go?

I think that Mr.Westerfeld should just scrap the whole trilogy thing and make it four books. There are just so many loose ends to tie up, and things to add to the story, that it would be insane to shove it all into one book! Also, I don’t know about anyone else, but I would definitely prefer that the fourth book kept the Alek and Deryn dual perspective thing rather than switching to different characters. There’s nothing wrong with changing your mind and making it more than just a trilogy! In my opinion trilogies (trilogys?) are overrated anyway. I mean how can you just get an idea for a series in you head and say this will be three books long. How can you limit yourself like that! It’s insane! What if you wanted to keep going?! You’d be stuck! How can someone do that to themselves? How?!

476. Good God! I can’t believe I just went on a rant like that! Barking spiders! I’m sorry! I just really had to get that out of my system. Sorry, but it’s what I really think and I just wanted to tell someone that. But, really. How? I don’t believe in limiting a series like that. I don’t mean that an author should go all out and make the series 13 books long or something (because sometimes it works, but other times you just get lost), but I just don’t think you should put a limit on a series like that. And I also think that companion novels are risky. I read a series that had the first book, then a companion novel, and now a sequel to the companion novel which is weird because it’s written from a different perspecitive than the book it is following. They’re all in a row (time-wise) but their all from different perspectives, but you don’t get mad about it because you don’t have enough time to really attach to the one character and what she/he thinks. But with Leviathan here, we have three books to really get attached to the characters and how they think. I already can’t imagine it any other way, and that’s after only two books! I guess, in a way I’m just saying that I think the series should stay the same. It shouldn’t change, and it should keep going.

477. @Ridley
Yes, I do think Volger is like that. Not that he is willing, but if he had to, he would. If he needed to convince Alek that Deryn didn’t care for him at all, that she didn’t tell him any of her secrets even if he did, Volger would not hesitate to tell him Deryn’s secret and imply it in a bad way.

I think they will meet some significant people among the Japanese/
American crowd, like Lilit and her family in Istanbul. I have no idea about Japan, I don’t know much about Japan’s part in the war, but I do know that America did end up declaring war on Germany in 1917. Although it is still 1914ish in Behemoth, when they go to America they may certainly find people with opinions about the war, and early loyalties to the Entente (Darwinist side). I wonder if they will meet Eddie Malone there? Or maybe…maybe they only go to America to meet him…what for? Something he published in his newspaper? I never thought of a reason for them going. Hmmm.

@Ridley: Yes, I think it is rather wrong to limit that, but assuming he knew from the start the basic outline of what would happen, it wouldn’t be so hard to know how many books there would be. If he’s already decided, I doubt he can change it now. (Nothing against the companion book though!!) Though I am just assuming he has had an outline…I have absolutely no idea how he’s going to fit everything into that one book!! He’ll have to really work on it (: Sometimes I feel like I’m asking too much, like what if he actually doesn’t tie something up, like if he’s planned that from the beginning that he’d leave that hanging…I wouldn’t blame him, because it’s a nasty task, it is, but still…

Still @Ridley: Which book is that? The companion-sequel thingy?

478. @Cassidy
It’s The Forest of Hands and Teeth series. It’s actually a horror series, but what I found strange was that even though I’m really sensitive to horror (I can’t watch a horror movie or anything without freaking out and having nightmares for weeks (even though once I only watched half of the stinking movie and still had nightmares) I just have such an overactive imagination, but anyway) I didn’t feel scared whatsoever while reading it. I would totally reccomend it to anyone who would be willing to read it. I swear Carrie Ryan (the author) just wrote it so beautifully… She is definitely my favourite author in terms of writing. Scott Westerfeld is my favourite author because he wrote by favourite book of course, but Carrie Ryan is just amazing. The detail…
The first book in the series is The Forest of Hands and Teeth, the second one (the companion novel) is The Dead-Tossed Waves, and now there’s a third one coming out later this year called The Dark and Hollow Places.

side note: the 13 book series is called Sweep and it’s by Cate Teirnan. I’m only on book 4 right know and so far it’s pretty good, but it’s almost like not much changes in the books, like Cate’s trying to draw it out and it doesn’t quite work perfectly.
Just thought I should mention it in case anyone was curious.

479. The double-agent theory seems likely, but I doubt it will be anyone we met in the first book. Anyone we met in the second sort of stayed in the second, so if there IS a double-agent, they’ll be introduced in the third book.

@Ridley – They were revolutionaries, not anarchists. But I think since they’re the allies… We’ll get a different look at the fabs. As for the trilogy thing, well, before you sell a series to an editor, you have to have an outline. So the whole thing’s a skeleton, really, probably even a bit fleshed out. I don’t think it’s limited. I also don’t think there are a lot of loose threads. But maybe I’m not reading into stuff as much as you.

480. @Raibean
I’m not really looking things up or anything, this is just what I think.
Even with an outline though lots of things get changed in a book during the drafts and editing period. There’s also the whole Eragon thing. I’ve never read the series, but I thought I heard somewhere that it was supposed to be a trilogy but now it’s grown into five books or something like that. That proves that you can still change something if you really wish to, and if the public agrees with you (and your editors and publishers of course!).
I agree that if there is a double-agent/spy he/she will be introduced in the next book.
I’m looking forward to any new characters and hopefully the return of some old characters as well!
I’m so excited now! To bad there’s still nine months to go…

481. I take back what I said earlier about the Sweep series. It’s actually gotten really exciting. I’m on the fifth book now.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Behemoth of anything. Sorry.

482. @Ridley – I didn’t say you COULDN’T change it. I just said that they’re NOT limiting themselves. They have to be able to bring a storyline to conclusion to sell it. I’ve never read the Eragon books, but I CAN give you two examples: The Mortal Instruments Series is being expanded into six books, and the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is still referred to as a Trilogy despite the fact that it has five books.

483. Thanks, Ridley! I’m going to look into those…almost done my sixth reading of Harry Potter! Need new material…
Absolutely nothing to do with Behemoth. Or anything at all. What a waste of a post.

484. OOOH! Going on the website of Carrie Ryan (The Forest of Hands and Teeth) I find that she wrote a story in Zombies vs. Unicorns! Maybe this is related to Behemoth, somewhat anyways…

485. Oh, and looking on Wikipedia I discover that the Sweep series has 15 books (actually 14, the 15th appears to be a companion book)

486. @Cassidy
It’s kind of related to Behemoth because she wrote a story for it, and Mr.Westerfeld also wrote a story for it, and his wife Justine is the editor for Team Zombie so it’s vaguely related to it. Your welcome by the way!
I also didn’t know that there were 15 books. Ah, shoot! I just looked in the cover of one of my sweep books, and where it lists the books there are actually 14. Sorry! That was totally my fault. I’m not sure how I miscounted, but I think it was probably because Sweep is a whole witchy series so I thought that it was 13 because that is a witchy number that is mentioned at one point in the series. That was such a stupid mistake! Sorry!
I’m onto book 11 now, and the series is having tons of perspective changes. The first 9 books were from the perspective of Morgan, then book 10 was from Hunter’s perspective. Oh, god! The first part of that book was such a guilty pleasure! Now, book 11 is mostly from the perspective of one of Morgan’s anscestors, book 12 is a Morgan/Alisa dual perspective, book 13 is a pure Alisa perspective, and then book 14, which I’m looking forward to the most, is a Morgan/Hunter dual perspective. I think the last book is almost like the Deryn/Alek dual perspective, but what it would be like after they realize they love each other and they are 17/19 years old.

This really has nothing to due with Behemoth or anything, and is really a waste of a post. Not to mention it’s long. Talk about useless. Sorry

487. @Cassidy
I wasn’t saying all that specifically to you, I just didn’t put in enough spaces. Sorry if you thought maybe I was freaking out on you or something. I meant to put in another space to seperate the paragraphs, but oh well I guess.

488. “When thirteen dine together, the first to rise will be the first to die”
-Trelawney

“I doubt it matters unless a mad ax man is waiting to kill the first person into the entrance hall”
-mcgonagall

*note that this is paraphrased*

489. How do you think the people of Leviathan will react to Varlow? Alek is obviously horrified at the thought, and Deryn likely would be too, but what about everyone else?

490. Attractive hands imply enticing nails as properly and so it’s worthwhile to follow sure nail care procedrues such as maintaining the nails nicely moisturized, treating the cuticles properly and washing your figers on an everyday basis.

Nail Fungus Home Remedy

491. I think Alek would laugh, but Deryn would be horrified. I feel like Alek has seen the need to ally the fab and Clanker worlds the most.

492. okay i just read all 691 comments. *WHEW* and i just gotta say that 1) I TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY AM GOING TO KILL MYSELF IF I HAVE TO WAIT AN ENTIRE YEAR!!! 2) avpm is the most magical and amazing musical in the universe (besides newsies) and 3) i wud kill to find out alek’s reaction to the whole deryn/dylan thing…but i mean besides the war, that’s the entire plotline so there would be no book if he found out, so i can wait.

493. Tiger-La

We share sentiments; although, mine tend to be slightly less violent. I wouldn’t want to kill, only maim, or seriously injure.

494. Just got back from Mr.Westerfeld’s meet up at The Forum and have some points to confirm:
1. Varlow is probably never going to happen since Dr. Barlow is in fact MARRIED
2. Goliath will take place in Japan, New York, and places in between
3. Volger is going to blackmail Deryn with her secret so that he can control her and what she does
4. There will be sadness and recriminations when CERTAIN PEOPLE find out CERTAIN THINGS (I’m not sure if recriminations is the right word though, since it has to do with divorce (which possibly negates point 1))
5. Goliath is about 10% larger than Behemoth, which was 10% larger than Leviathan
6. Goliath word count-92,000 to 95,000; Leviathan word count-78,000
7. There will be no quartet; Goliath is and always will be the last book in the trilogy
8. August 2012 will mark the release of a fourth book which will be all colour with lots of cool art and things such as the deck plan of the Leviathan
9. About two-thirds of Goliath’s art has been finalized
10. If Mr.Westerfeld could switch lives with any of his characters he would switch with either cured-Special Shay, because HOVERBOARD or Deryn, because AIRSHIP
11. His fav part of writing Goliath was researching historical characters
12. There are a lot of historical characters in Goliath
13. He doesn’t think that he gave Deryn and eye colour (I should really let this one go but I can’t)
14. That’s all

Sorry if this post is really long.

495. Point 4 is likely in reference to Alek finding Deryn’s secret but I just don’t understand what recrimination has to do with that. Sadness makes sense though. I also suspect anger. But… who knows?

496. All this is only making me want to read Goliath even more! Arrrrgh! There’s only 8 1/2 months = 32 weeks = approx. 257 days until October 5 which is probably near when Goliath will be released! I didn’t think it was THAT long!

497. @baf
I know! And it would have been interesting to see how they would react to an Alek/Deryn romance if they were together. However, it’s good since that means that Dr.Barlow won’t be having an affair. It’s to bad she’s married already.

498. @Tiger-La
Deryn’s secret isn’t the entire plot other than the war. There are many other little sub-plots that all add up into the plot. Deryn’s secret is definitely a main plot subject, but is by no means the entirerity of the book!
I wouldn’t neccesarily kill…..maybe…..
No, I would be capable of hurting someone, but probably not killing them. Unless Alek was real and the only way to save him was to kill someone, then I would definitely save him no matter what it took!

499. Never mind, recrimination does make sense depending on it’s usage. It means that Alek and Deryn will likely fight when Alek finds out Deryn’s secret. Alek will of course be sad as well because Deryn didn’t trust him enough to tell him sooner,or at least that will be what he thinks, since he doesn’t know how many times she’s tried to tell him then never got the chance, since of course he wouldn’t know that she would have told him aboard the Leviathan at the end of the first book if Dr. Barlow hadn’t marched in and ruined it.

500. Did anyone notice that on page 233 of Behemoth Deryn’s head is directly over Japan? Or maybe I am just a little too addicted to the book…..

501. Fun Fact: over half of Leviathan’s illustrations were completed in 2008; all of Behemoth’s illustrations were completed in 2010; two-thirds of Goliath’s illustrations have already been completed.

Also on The Forum, in a past post by Mr.Westerfeld from a year or two ago, he said that neither Alek nor Deryn are dying material! That doesn’t exclude serious near fatal injuries, but it means that they aren’t going to die!
approx. 256 days

502. @amo
That’s interesting. I never noticed it before. However, I don’t think it has any supremely signifigance. I think it’s more likely that Japan just happened to be in the middle. That’s a pretty awesome map though.

503. @Ridley GAHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOO Dr. Barlow CANNOT be married!! this is just plain BAD! GHRWLHHHHHFDGASQEEEEEURYS…done spazzing now(: OK the only reason I can think of for this unnaturally annoying turn of events is that Dr. Barlow takes sympathy to Deryn (after finding out THE SECRET) and explains that a similar thing happened to her, and now she’s happily married. OR that it was an arranged marriage and she’s DIVORCING HIM because he’s an idiot teeheeee (loophole).
@Ridley again (#3) YAY I was right-ish! OOOOOH I’ll be looking forward to some Volger-wickedness now…I can’t wait!!
@amo WHOAAA good eye! no, you cannot be too obsessed (who was it that found that typo?? where there was a “Deryn” in an Alek chapter??) xD
@Ridley yet again YES, recrimination may be a part of it, and not only because Alek is angry. After he gets over it, don’t you think it would be a little AWKWARD for Alek? Like not that he’s scared of girls, but like that he can’t go near her without feeling too close? (until he falls in love of course xD)

504. @Cassidy
Things would definitely be awkward for Alek. After the moments they’ve shared together (as friends) and with him trusting her with all of his secrets, things would definitely be awkward. Until he realizes that he’s madly in love with her and everything turns romantic and happy…Good God, I just wish I could read it now!
It would be cool if Dr.Barlow was divorcing her husband. Then she’d be available for Volger! They certainly would go good together… They might eat each other’s head off, but what good couple doesn’t start that way? Even Alek and Deryn didn’t hit it off right from the start, what with Deryn pulling a knife to his throat and all, and her almost punching him, and turning him in, and him hating her for not letting him go… but look at them now! They’re perfect for each other!

505. @Ridley & @Cassidy
My friends call my addiction “unhealthy”, however, I tend to spazz out at the slightest hint at leviathan, i.e. we watched a video about a Scottish artist in art and I proceeded to silently squeal to myself. I annoy practically everyone about it, fortunately I urged others to read the book. Still, some of my friends are trying(unsuccessfully) to get me addicted to another book series. I REALLY hope I’m not the only person who thinks about Alek & Deryn everytime they hear a certain song or tries to incorporate Leviathan into just about everything. Or am i just crazy? The latter, most likely.

506. @baf
Yes, I have always considered that, however, I think of my self more as the weird/eccentric type. I am just really hoping that Scott Westerfeld is going to be visiting arizona on his goliath tour. I really hope i can curve my craving for more Alek & Deryness, although I highly doubt that I will succeed. BTW anyone who still reads leviathan fanfiction i would recommend Dangerous Secrets, because that is the story i have found most believeable & enjoyable so far.

507. @amo
I just read Dangerous Secrets and it was really good! A couple of things were still doubtfull, but on the whole it was pretty believable! Thanks for mentioning it! That’s probably enough to hold me off for another day!
If you’re crazy then I am too!
Hurrah for insanity!

approx. 254 days

508. Have been reading fanfics all day and I would recommend Sketches as well as Dangerous Secrets. Sketches is kind of sweet, but it’s short and doesn’t exactly have any major storyline or anything. It’s just a sweet little side note.

509. @Ridley
Yes, insanity is the origin of all things awesome (including fangirling).

On another note, does any specific song bring Deryn & Alek to mind? Personally, mine is Speak Now by Taylor Swift (yes, because of the fanfiction), but seriously, check it out. It’s a really good song. Is that too harsh? I haven’t a clue, but all I know is that I am Scottish & German (which is close enough to Austria for me). Plus I’m also of Japanese descent (I have two parents from VERY different backgrounds) so yay for me!

Fun fact: Austria was one of the only European countries to use arch- in front of titles

510. One other fun fact: The first genetic engineering ever done was when scientists injected frog genes into the bacteria E. coli and when it began binary fission (aka reproduction) the offspring had the gene also. Sadly, the bacterium does not acquire any frogyish or frog-related traits. If only they could do genetic engineering the boffins do. Sad. 🙁

511. This is a sort of general question, but which book is better: Leviathan or Behemoth? In my opinion, I like Behemoth, because there is more character development & I became more attached to the characters (helllllo Alek). BUT i believe that Goliath the most because of CERTAIN OBVIOUS REASONS that I hope that will happen. What do you guys think?
(whoaaaa triple post!)

512. @amo
I like the song Raise Your Weapon by Deadmau5, but that is because of this really awesome Deryn and Alek ‘dream’ that I have that is totally related to that song. I agree that Goliath will likely be the best due to certain reasons that have me so excited I want to scream. However, between Leviathan and Behemoth, I’m not exactly positive, but I’m thinking maybe Leviathan. It has the moment Alek and Deryn first meet, all the action of Deryn holding a knife to Alek’s throat and all those other things, it has them becoming friends, and it doesn’t have any of Alek’s annoying “it is my destiny” stuff or Lilit messing things up with that kiss which makes Alek even less likely to believe Deryn is a girl when she is finally forced to tell him. Of course, Behemoth has the perfect fencing moment at the beginning of the book, Deryn telling Alek about her Da’s death in the telescope room, and the even more perfect moment at the end of the book when she convinces Alek to come back aboard the Leviathan. It really close but I think Leviathan is my favourite just slightly, but then again Behemoth was awesome too…you know what I’m just going to say Goliath.

513. @Ridley
I just found the song This Is Was by 30 seconds to Mars & Green Eyes by Coldplay (both self explanatory songs in themselves). I know green eyes is talking about a girl, but I still find it ironic. Anyway, super hyped for goliath and i had made it my job to preach the leviathan series to practically everyone I know and even some I don’t. 🙂

514. @Ridley
I just found the song This Is War by 30 seconds to Mars & Green Eyes by Coldplay (both self explanatory songs in themselves). I know green eyes is talking about a girl, but I still find it ironic. Anyway, super hyped for goliath and i had made it my job to preach the leviathan series to practically everyone I know and even some I don’t. 🙂

515. @amo
I was just listening to Green Eyes, and this song is really good! I like to think of it as Alek singing about Deryn’s green eyes, but it kind of works the other way around too which is cool.
We should make some sort of Leviathan Awareness Day where all day we just go around talking about Leviathan. That would be fun!
While we’re talking about songs, I was just daydreaming about Alek and the random Ipod shuffle inside my head suddenly randomly started playing My Life Would Suck Without You by Kelly Clarkson, and I was like, “Whoa…That is so true.” It was kind of weird.
Still listening to Green Eyes. This song is so sweet! It’s now one of my favourite songs!

516. @Ridley
I’m glad you like the song; I enjoy it too, and when I saw green eyes under coldplay I thought it was such a coincidence.

517. I know this post is sort of wasting a virtual tree & will not happen any time in the near future, but wouldn’t be AMAZING if there was a Leviathan movie? Although half of the movie would be subtitles but their accents are so awesome!

518. @baf
I’d hope they don’t. Although the Percy Jackson movie was good in and of itself, it hardly followed the plot of the real book, which slightly agitated. Scott Westerfeld, if you are reading this, PLEASE DO NOT mess up a movie for the Leviathan series OR the Uglies series….PLEASE!

519. @ amo– i really like the percy jackson movie by itself but i wanted it to be more like the book. I hope the movie of leviathan actually follows the book’s storyline

520. Does anyone THINK they know Deryn’s eye color? My friend (who is obssessed with the book also but hasn’t even read them yet) believes that her eyes are blue, which may be the case, as many fanfictions have said that her eyes are blue also. But does anyone think that her eyes could be, say, hazel? Or brown? Maybe even green or gray, but since Alek has green eyes I don’t believe she would have them too. Or maybe Scott just won’t tell us, even in the 3rd book. I mean, really, we find out Lilit’s eye color for heaven’s sake (it’s brown)! Omigosh, 250 days is JUST TOO LONG……w0w I just went on a random rant……

521. @amo
I’ve always believed that Deryn’s eyes are green, and they will be if I can help it, and I also don’t think that it matters that Alek’s eyes are also green (his are dark green to be exact), and they might be different shades of green too. It’s true that Mr.Westerfeld never decided on her eye colour, but he might choose to decide on a colour and mention it in Goliath. Hmmm: “As Alek looking into Deryn’s beautiful green eyes, he found himself starting to forgive her.” Hee hee hee, how great would that be? (sorry for the lousy rhyme).

@amo & baf
It would be sooo amazing if Leviathan was made into a movie! With the right graphics it would blow the world away! The only reason I’m not screaming out loud since it won’t be happening anytime soon, is because if it takes a few more years before it’s made, they just imagine how much better the graphics will be by then! It will be superemely realistic, not to mention then we will be watching it IN 3-D!

approx. 249 days

522. Not looking, looked! I can’t believe I messed that up, so much for effect.

“As Alek looked into Deryn’s beautiful green eyes, he found himself starting to forgive her.”
(ha!)

523. @amo
That’s cool! It’s my favourite colour too!

It would be cool to have a fanfiction account so that I can just write down all the little Leviathan stories that I’ve come up with. That would be pretty fun don’t you think?

approx. 248 days

524. @Ridley
Totally! I would if I could, but the time just seems to disappear around me…I just wish it would disappear fast enough so I could read Goliath!

525. approx. 246 days

I just read the manga RomeoxJuliet, and it is awesome! Some of the similarites to Alek + Deryn stuff is hard to ignore. I would totally recommend it to everyone. As far as ratings go, I think that it is a ages 14 and up kind of book, because it has quite a bit of profanity in it and one little image that really isn’t that bad. The art is spectacular though and the story is so perfect!

526. l’oiseau et la prince………
( the bird and the prince)
And for those who may not be as crazy obssessed as me, Deryn’s name comes from the Welsh word aderyn, which means bird.
Also, birds seem to be incorporated a lot into the story: Deryn’s name, the fact that they are always in the sky, how Alek’s stormwalker walks, the fact that Alek’s crest is a double-headed eagle, the strafing hawks, etc.

527. @amo
I did already know about Deryn’s name, thanks entirely to the fanfics, but the Hapsburg coat of arms is originally a double headed eagle (google image it, it’s cool looking) but Mr.Westerfeld just changed it so that it’s made out of mechanical parts. I never realized that the Stormwalker walks like a bird. Plus: the whole fact that Deryn lives to fly, and she dreamed she was flying with wings of her own. She’s really living up to her name.
That french verse is really cute! It should totally be incorperated into something. Really cool!

528. @Ridley
Thanks! I take French, but I still wasn’t sure if I should have written it in French (language of love) or German. I went with French.

Lastly: Aaaaaaiiiiieeeeaaaahhhhhhhhiiiieeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOOOOLLLIIIIAAAATTTHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go and scream while jumping up and down and yelling about Goliath.

Alek’s mother’s family is in Goliath?! Is it just me or did someone elso notice that mention? It’s like a hint to what may happen in the book or something.

@gerbilove
It’s true, Dr.Barlow is married. Mr.Westerfeld said that Varlow would be a major scandal and thus will not happen unless she happens to be in the middle of a divorce. Which she is probably not.

534. @Ridley
Yes I did notice the *ahem* sly hint, and could just as well be another pointer to Goliath.
I also want to know more about Deryn’s family even thought we have learned a little about her father & brother.

535. @amo
Yes, it would be nice to know a little more about their families. I’m mostly curious about Deryn’s mother. I’m thinking about doing some fanfics about her. I think that she’s just worried that she’ll lose her whole family to the sky. First of all, her husband died, and then her son joined the Air Service, which isn’t the worst since he’s a boy and all, but now her DAUGHTER has joined the Air Service too! I think she might just be afraid of her dying like her da. I like Jaspert. I think he could be funny and a really great character. It’s just to bad that there won’t be more time in the series to get to know him and some of the other characters better.

Third page news now! The Behemoth Spoiler Thread is now even older news!

536. @gerbilove
Hang on, did you write the fanfic ‘Goliath’? Because if not then there is someone who did write that fanfic who has the exact same username as you…that sounds really stupid. If it is you, then good job! You should continue it if you can. It could definitely go somewhere.

537. Why couldn’t they have stuck with the original Behemoth poster? It’s MUCH more awesome……in my opinion.

538. @amo
Yes, but they changed it so that it would go along with the style with the face that the paperback Leviathan has. I do like that better though. Maybe they could use it for the paperback? It would make more sense to have hardcover match hardcover and paperback match paperback, but too late now I guess.

539. Dear Scott,
Please give us hardcore undying-love fans a hint of Goliath or a sneak peek of the art. Please………it’s Valentine’s day. Or else I just might die (not literally)….
Your fan 4eva,
amo

540. I haven’t been on here for an outrageously long time…and what do I find? Only a MONTH’S LESS WAIT! That is is best welcome-back-ish present EVVVVER!!!!! Thanks soooo much, Scott!!
Surprisingly enough, I didn’t hyperventilate, because I had been reading the posts backwards and he had mentioned September 13th a lot of times and so I forgot about the former October release…until he declared it and left me jumping wildly around (:
I’ve never actually imagined her eyes as green…always blue or gray…interesting…
The best news is that there’s still hope for Lilspert (; [I will never give up hope!!] I can’t wait for the whole Jaspert/Newkirk/random other male darwinist “YOU LOVE A CLANKER?!” thing, that’s gotta be a little funny (;
209 days?! *sigh*

541. 207 days left (sorry, but I missed yesterday)

@Cassidy
Heh heh, I’ve been imagining the whole ‘You love a clanker!?’ thing. Hilarious! Really really really looking forward to Goliath! Welcome back by the way!

542. Hopefully Goliath will have a better cover……will it be Darwinist or Clanker themed? OR maybe a little of both like America? hmmmmm….

543. @amo
I’ve been wondering about the cover too. If he continues the face theme then who will be on the cover? ‘Alek’ was on the cover of Leviathan and ‘Deryn’ on the cover of Behemoth, so who would be on the cover of Goliath? I think that if he continues this theme then they should both share the cover. I think that the cover will probably have some relation to the book. I hope we get a sneak peak of it as soon as it’s decided.

206 days left

544. Okay. I was just on Alison Goodman’s website and she has the first chapter of Eona available to read. Eona is coming out in April but wouldn’t it be just perfect if Mr.Westerfeld could do something like that for Goliath! Talk about a sneak peak! That would be awesome! Course, it probably wouldn’t happen anytime soon, but still.

545. I just found a mistake in Behemoth! On page 330 when Deryn just found Alek and Lilit and they’re in Alek’s hotel room, it says ‘Lilit asked’ before Alek ever mentioned Lilit’s name! Deryn wouldn’t have known what her name was! I was just randomly flipping open pages and re-reading some random paragraphs when I noticed this. Totally random and just a small little error.

546. What I found isn’t nearly as good as one of the Alek chapters saying Deryn! Does anyone know which chapter that is?

547. @Ridley
I have no idea what chapter that is, but I’ll keep my out for it. By the way, wouldn’t it be awsome if BOVRIL was on the cover of Behemoth?

548. @amo
That would be really cool, but it would be kind of hard to get a real-life looking photo of him.

205 days left

549. @Ridley
I know, but still, maybe they could take a picture of a ferret and mess around with it on photoshop. I’ve always imagined him as a ferret, though I’m not sure why.

550. I can’t wait for Goliath woooo

By the way, though, what hapened to Fitzroy(the other middy in Leviathan)?

551. @olivia
I’m not sure. I think he was just a supporting character to heighten Deryn’s characteristics and give her a motive to work harder

552. @olivia
He got kicked off because they had to much weight and he didn’t do his job well enough.

553. Does anyone know when Alek’s or Deryn’s birthday is? And how old are they? I know they are either 15 or 16, but I’m not sure.

554. @amo~ someone mentioned a little screwup in Leviathan…possibly an intentional screwup…at the beginning of the book it said that Alek’s 16th birthday was close..but its been like a month and a half and it hasnt happened yet -.- I hope it happens in Goliath!! (No idea about Deryn, though)

555. EEEEEE!! (squeal) 800th post!!! wooooow…I wonder if this is unlimited? We should go for 1000, we’re close enough!!

556. looks like I haven’t read the comments well…@Ridley (765) you noticed first (:
triple post…what happened to all our theories?? I’ve been reading them and they all sound plausible right now, though they didn’t a while ago…am I just desperate for an ending??

557. @Cassidy
I had no idea I was the 800th post……random. And knowing Scott, he’ll probably suprise us all (at least I hope). But no death PLEASE!

558. @Cassidy
I know! It’s like the well of theories has run dry!

@amo
They are both currently 15 but that might change in the next book. Nobody has any clue when their birthdays are (except Scott probably). I’m all for a surprise, as long as Deryn and Alek end up together, I don’t care what happens to anyone else!

Mwwaahhaahhaaahhhaa!!!! Go Chapter Two! Thank you to everyone who voted! Note: it also included the two-headed messenger so ‘Ha!’ it included the whole thing from Chapter One while adding stuff!

Message lizard update. Now it says release is Sep. 20th. Wait, what? I thought it was Sep. 13th? Am I wrong or is the lizard still wrong? So confused! Just kidding! I’m in a really happy mood right now! I feel like skipping around my room for no reason whatsoever. Tee hee! Just gotta say, please don’t advertise here! We really aren’t going to buy anything and advertisments are really annoying when we’re here to discuss a book and all things relating to it.
This goes for any buisness people who want to put up ads here. I’m sure you could find much better places for them. Thank you.

565. @Ridley
Though I would really appreciate an add for Goliath……. and the message lizard confused me also. If it’s correct I will have to wait longer! UGH!

566. @amo
Yeah, nobody really knows enough about Goliath right now to create an ad for it though (except Scott of course!). I hope that it’s still wrong! Didn’t he say multiple times that the release was the thirteenth? I could have sworn…

I just went on the Simon & Schulster website and it said it is going to be released on the 20th. What does this mean????!!!!

568. Ok I just realized this but in the last chapter of Behemoth, Volger says the New York World was delivered from Churchill by a “beastly bird”. Could that be the doubled-headed bird in the picture, the “two-headed messenger?” Just a thought…

569. @amo
Maybe. I just assumed it was a carrier pigeon, but the two-headed bird would make much more sense. Cool! Hmm…. Very curious…..

570. New cover! Pretty cool! It does keep with the style of the others. Looking forward to finding out about the manta-ship thing. There is a crown in the middle. Is it a sign?

187 days left

571. @ Ridley and amo
I think the crown has to be symbolic…in the leviathan face cover the center was this gear thing, on behemoth it was like a compass-ish thing, and now…a crown!!
AHHH NOOOO I voted for chapter 3, for purely calculating reasons, because #3 was the one that would give us the most insight on plot…ah well, another glimpse of growing-in-hotness-alek is fine with meeeee (:
ackk, if it’s moved to the 20th I will like dieeeee…he has to update…may be he said it was the 13th, found out it was changed to the 20th ,realized the messenger lizard was wrong, changed it to the 20th, and then forgot to update us because he forgot he said it was the 13th in the first place…or maybe I’m just spewing gibberish XD

572. reading over the votes posts, I find that I have an IMPERSONATOR eeeeeek!! LOL since they might be reading this, I gotta be polite…no big deal really, except that it might’ve screwed up the voting. “I vote for the first one… can my vote count double because it’s my birthday and this is the ultimate present?” ~ NOT ME…ah well…I don’t think there was any point in posting this, but if you’re listening, girl (or guy) I WAS HERE FIRRRST XD

You were so close to being able to see him! You’re lucky. He only came six hours of snowy mountain passes away from me…
If the crown is symbolic then what is it a symbol of? Other than Alek being an archduke and all….Hey! Maybe it has something to do with him ruling Austria-Hungary? (Ugh, that is so obvious)

575. @Ridley
oh wellll…): I’ll get over it sometime XD
maybe it has something to do with the war over the crown? like, everyone’s practically fighting over it!

576. @Cassidy
I live in Arizona, & the closest he came to me was TEXAS.
Anyone remember what I said about the “beastly bird”? Yah, kinda got the quote wrong there. It was actually a “beastly EAGLE”……
I also apologize for the constant use of CAPITAL LETTERS-it’s sort of satisfying in a way though.
One more note: does anyone constantly listen to the audiobook for Behemoth to stop boredom? Or is it just one of the many details that point to my omnipresent obssession of Alek & Deryness?

(Is it 184 days or 183 days? I forget :/ )

577. @amo
I feel like spoiledish for not checking it out and being so close but not going while you guys all like had no hope ): ok Im done moping, I had even forgotten about it before I checked the thread XD no need to worry for my mental health…
+ NO IT IS NOT UNUSUAL I DO THE SAME THING XD I had like memorised the first few paragraphs of it last october when I was hungrily sucking up all details of Behemoth there were…presumably, the same will happen with Goliath!

578. This is random but does Deryn hate being a girl or the fact that girls cannot join the air service?

Also, all weekend I have been watching Indiana Jones. The Last Crusade is my favorite, and I practically went crazy when Elsa (Austrian Nazi) kissed Indy and said “That is how Austrians say goodbye.” If you have not seen it, watch it!!!!!

579. @ amo: i don’t think she hates being a girl in general, just all the things girls were supposed to do in the early 1900s

That makes sense. I was thinking that she’d enjoy being a girl modern day (in our world, not the parallel-universe steampunk westerfeld world). I almost never wear skirts, and practically live in jeans.

581. @amo LOL less random than me painting my nails at 3 in the morning…I really love this colour!
awww I missed the week mark…6 more dayyysss!!!

582. “It’s slightly spoilery, but I think you guys will like it anyways”?! SPOILERY? oooh I’m innnn (:

583. Only 6 more days of painful testing, never-ending homework, and sleepless nights till the art release from Goliath! Can’t wait!!!

584. I feel really bad for not being on hear for such a long time.

Such spoilery art! Honestly, I am going crazy right now! Is that Lilit Dylan is marrying? And that is Alek in the Stormwalkery thingy right? Is he crashing the wedding because he knows Dylan’s secret? And WHY THE HECK IS DYLAN GETTING MARRIED ANYWAYS!? WHAT THE HECK IS HAPPENING? Totally going crazy with waiting for Goliath! Arrrghh! How many days are left anyway?
*going to check calendar
164 days left. Why must he torture us with spoilery art when we must wait so long? Why!?
On the bright side, how many theories do you think we can come up with revolving around this?
Sh-oot! My brother just asked me ‘what day was that released?’ Answer: April Fool’s Day. Aarrrggghhh! That is soooo mean!

585. Oh. Em. Jee.
I found the spoiler synopsis.
sigh.
DON’T READ IT! PLEASE! ITS VERY VERY VERY SPOILERY! IT DOESNT SAY HOW ALEK FINDS OUT THAT DERYN’S A GIRL, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, IT TECHNICALLY REVEALS THE WHOLE PLOT! gahhhhh

586. AHH am I a loner? LOL no one’s talking…understandable, because we’re sort of on the fifth page now, plus exam revision month is in full swing D:

587. I had the poor fore-sight of finishing Leviathan on a saterday night when my library is closed on sunday and monday, and then opens on tuesday after my school starts and is eight kilometers away from said school.
Be that as it may, I still biked there instead of having lunch during my lunch period (it took the whole freaking period because even though I put it on hold because I am paranoid, they lost it. but then found it so yay!) then I biked back as fast as I could and just made it back to school in time. I then proceded to read it under the desk of every class and not pay attention and manage to finish it in less then five hours.
my mom was less then thrilled because she thinks that now i’m going to run away and join the army, but she’s secretly crazy so bah
might I just add that in between saterday night and tuesday… noontime I was hopeing for Alek to give Deryn a fencing lesson and then I open the book and HI HO, there it is

my ability to predict these things make me so happy!

588. Hello! Is anybody else still on here? I just finished Goliath and it broke my heart and made me cry…I can’t believe Scott did that!
Spoiler alert!
When Deryn’s knee got hurt I couldn’t stop swearing and I considered throwing the book against the wall. But it was a hardcover and my parents would hear and wonder what I was doing throwing books I just bought against a wall. So I through it onto my desk chair instead. Not a satisfying but better for the book and speaks more for my sanity.
I was so excited and THAT KISS!!! Now THAT was GREAT!!! Still mad at Scott and Goliath for crushing Deryn’s knee and my dreams of serving on the Leviathan! 🙁
I guess I love it anyways though 🙂

590. Let explore this false teaching
Inspire church beliefs

5. The salvation of man
a. Conditions to Salvation.
“Salvation is received through repentance toward God
and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and
renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith,
man becomes an heir of God according to the hope of eternal life”

God has no favourites

Many of Peter’s fellow Jews thought that God loved them more than the gentiles,
but Peter came to understand that God did not show favoritism. God wants people of all
nations to repent and be saved (2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4)

Where does faith come from?

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy
set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand
of the throne of God

God leads us to repentance
Romans 2:4 says, “The goodness of God leads you to repentance.”

Both faith and repentance comes from God

NOW The truth!!

Ephesians 2:8 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works,
so that no one can boast.

THERE YOU HAVE IT. IT’S A FREE gift from God. NOTHING you can DO ABOUT IT!
NO Conditions NO STRINGS ATTACHED

Jesus IS REALLY THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD.
That means all your family, friends and yes, all your ememies

This is the good news. salvation is not a lottery

591. You really make it appear so easy with your presentation however I find this topic to be really one thing which I feel I might by no means understand. It sort of feels too complicated and extremely wide for me. I am looking forward to your next publish, I’ll attempt to get the dangle of it!
