Long Live Rex! Um, er . . . Jonathan?

My first post on this blog was about the cover of Blue Noon, book three of the Midnighters trilogy. So perhaps it’s appropriate that my real first post on the redesigned blog is the redesigned Blue Noon cover.

And it’s timely too, given that all three books of the trilogy are being re-released together on January 2!

So here’s the new Rex:

For reference, here are all three of the new covers together. That’s Jessica on book 1 and Melissa on book 2. (Poor Dess and Jonathan!)

Anyway, now that you’ve seen all three covers, what do you guys think?

Update: It has been pointed out to me that this is actually Jonathan. He’s got the acrobat symbol over his eye, after all. Man, us authors can really miss the obvious sometimes.

Except, um, this guy doesn’t really look Hispanic. Hmm . . .

  7. I like these trade covers, I think more than I like the normal hardcover ones. But I’m pretty sure Allie is right- although the guy looks like Rex should, the symbol on his eye looks like the acrobat symbol. Strange.

    have i mentioned i love that rex one?
    he’s so blue…and i love his freaky eye color.

    i mean, i only have the first two. if i wait, the only one available’ll be rexy, so i’ll just *have* to buy all three of the new covers…

    hmmm…i think the flamebringer symbol works the best with the eye thing. you can’t really tell with mindcaster or seer.

    seriously, a fourth midnighters would make my century. i’d buy like eight copies. and donate to every library in my county so they all had one. and show up at every book signing.
    would be great.

    wow, the new layout has brought like 80 million new peeps along with it. odd.

    what’s with melissa’s diamond earrings.

    amazon was stupid yesterday, i hate the search-inside-this-book feature, it foils all my image-stealing.
    and i didn’t see Touching Darkness at all.

    i loves these color schemes. the new layout one and the covers. so…very…fawesome.

    so i’ll have to buy two new ones too.
    and then i’ll have to match the old trilogy too…and buy an old Blue Noon.

    see how i support you Scott-la? buying two sets of a trilogy because it’s so pretty. i might even buy TLD in French to steal the vocabulary. and i bought two copies of Extras accidentally too…

  21. My bookshelf has stupid books on it. I don’t own any of Scott’s books except Specials and Extras. My library has the rest. But I need to buy them…2 weeks doesn’t satisfy me…I need them 24/7!! lol jk. That sounded materialistic. w/e.

  35. Rex didn’t wear glasses after the Halfing deal…not saying more, no spoilers!

    He could see fine w/o them. That’s what it said. So I don’t think he wore glasses after that…why would he need to? And it IS the cover of Blue Noon, so it would be after the Halfing stuff.

  39. i love the covers not as much as the other ones but thats besides the point the point of this post it to ask why almost all of your books have very close up faces on the cover

    I don’t think you missed the obvious at all. I think the cover designers did. That model doesn’t look anything like Jonathan, who you describe as looking noticeably Hispanic. I assumed he would have, at the very least, olive skin. This white boy looks much more like how I imagined Rex.

    i pictured Jonathan as being…Hispanic-er. that is also a word. like, you know, Hispanic at all.
    and Rex should have longer hair and be Rex.ier.
    i support the Rexathan theory.

    from the suspiciously blueish haircolor, i would guess Kirby before he decided to dye pink, but i very much doubt it.

  45. I like the new look of the blog. It’s very high tech-ish. As for the covers, my favorite has to be the second one with Melissa. Only I pictured her with short black hair not long-ish red.

    b) I LUV the new cover!! that is soooo HOT! (and that guys not too shabby either). when i first saw it i also thought rex because of the long-ish black hair and the possesed looking eyes but then i noticed the acrobat symbol sooooo…. maybe the cover ppl got confused?? either way its great!!

    d)I am totally going out to buy those 3 books (plus the last days and so yesterday) just so i can have the full scott westerfeld collection. omg that would be soo cool…. even tho ive already read so yesterday twice in the last 3 months and its probly my least favorite (no offense). even if i dont get so yesterday and the last days im still totally gonna get the new midnighters books (er, new covers, not books).

  47. i love the new covers…very fawesome! i already have the first book in the old cover…so i wonder if my mom would buy me all three books in the re-designed covers so they will be matching…hmmm. she might…i just checked the prices and the originals are actually more than the re-designed ones. yay!

    hey Scott do u think there is any possiblity of them coming out with a boxed set for Midnighters? cuz i’m gonna be sad if they do all of a sudden and i already buy the books seperatly.

    I’m rereading Uglies, and I almost cried during English today when I got to the part right after the Special’s came to the Smoke and Tally was in the cave with David hiding and he was being so incredibly sweet! And she had just helped destroy his home!!!! IT’S SO SAD!

    yeah…ironic part is that i haven’t read the Golden Compass and was thinking more of Zane Cobriana from Hawksong. though Zane Zane is also great and was in my mind.
    and the story also has a character named David in it, ironically. David still isn’t as cool as Zane though.
    the Sarafina (as in Magic Or Madness) spelling scares me. like a drill through my skull. my brain tries to pronounce it different too. it’s wierd.
    i’m very rarely sane.
    Kariss Zakealson is a pretty cool name too.

  77. lol. Lizzy is the name of a character in some fanfic I’m writing now. Stargate SG-1. Not Uglies or Midnighters. I’ve decided to take a break from that! Until I finish my Stargate fanfic. Cause Stargate’s awesome too, just not on as high a level as Uglies and Midnighters.

    i reread all the Tally/David part and felt…nothing. it’s just sort of, is. like, David’s sweet and useful, but Zane is just amazingly better in every way. personally, i’m a Zane girl. i like cities and the rain and gothness and sleep deprivation and caffinne. that’s just me. i don’t like campfires and homemade leather. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again.

  136. I cut my hair just like two weeks ago… and I died it Blue this summer! It was like… neon for a few weeks. Seriously, I didn’t believe it was hair at first cause it was SO BLUE. Actually, it was only like stripes of my hair. It alternated between black and blue. Not it alternates between red and brown :] I love dyeing my hair

  137. Omg I luv the new look of ur website!!! It’s sooooo aweseom!! And I just finished Midnighters!! Now, over Winter break, im having my freiend read all of he Uglies books and All of the Modnoghters books. I stacked all 7 (but there should be 9, 2 for Dess and Jonathan, like some ppl have pointed out) and I almost screamed the stack was so high!! Melissa totally looks how I pictured her!! Well, kind of. And Jessica actually looks evil almost…I don’t know if it’s just me or I didn’t read through all the comments and it’s comeing back to haunt me….And Jonathan/Rex looks more like Rex to me!! And then in the end of Blue Noon, I actually cried it was so sad to me!! Ok well i g2g see if Neopets is working on my compy yet..if not I’ll be back here soon!!

  156. Serafina, I don’t recomend trying green. I tried a bunch of times, and no matter what dye you use it turns this pukey color. At least that’s my experience with it. Plus, I’ve heard that green dye is the most likely to malfunction and turn some weirdo color on you. Like, say, PUKEY! But blue works wonders! If you live anywhere near a Walgreens, I’m pretty sure every Walgreens has this stuff that I used. It’s called SPLAT, and it comes in Blue, Red, and Pink. It’s the best working stuff I’ve found for weirdo colors. But, yeah, I’ve had lots of hair colors. Blonde, bleach blonde, all shades of brown, black[my favorite!], blue, pink, red, this scary indigo color.
    And then after me and my friend read Pretties, we tried to dye our hair with Ink like how Zane’s hair is described. It only lasted like 2 days though

    i’ve used L’oreal Colour Rays, which was where i got the red and purple, which is cool cuz it does streaks really easy. and some other less permanat stuff.

    mine’s been brown, red, really bleach blondish, purple, orange, basically all that spectrum. my mom’s forbidden black.

  159. SPLAT lasts like…. Well, I put it in at the very end of May and it was out atleast by the begining of August. Probably sooner than that. It’s not very permanant. I think the box says a month. And I usually use Loreal, it’s my favorite! Plus, it’s the only stuff that I know for sure won’t totally fry my hair. It keeps it soft :] But after the first time I died it black, they said I couldn’t do it anymore. They said “only very very very dark brown’, because appearently black looks gothic. Which it doesn’t, but whatever. So I’m going to get really dark brown dye and leave it in 20 minutes too long so that it’s black :]]

  161. wow, that’s actually pretty good. i mean, one of the stuff i used lasted only like two weeks and the other stuff lasts about a month.

    yeah. frying my hair is kind of bad. think i might have already done it. l’oreal is good though.

    lol, use that loophole! and the added developing time.
    i ususally leave it in less now, because dying it so much has literally bleached my hair blond, which i’m going to out on a limb and say is very, very bad for it. ahhh well. i’ll end up with edgy short hair instead.

    that is a very cool post you linked to, Allie-wa. and very timely for me, because i’ve been thinking about writing and publishing lately. i love writing, and i would love (and am determined) to get published someday. writing is my sanity. writing is all i want to do with my life. heck, writing IS my life.
    today i hit 24K on a story i really like that i started in june. it’s now 50 word document pages, which is a new record for me. my friends now owe me sundaes. it was the first time i’d really written in forever, and now i remember why i love it so much. AND, and here’s the best part, i know what happens next. i even know what happens after that. the flow isn’t abandoning me.
    which means that i will again be writing tonight, from the hours of eleven to one a.m, as i did last night.
    because sleep is for losers. i’m tired anyway.

Omg, im sure more ppl have thought of this b4, but wouldnt it be awesoem if the uglies and midnightwers books by making a 5th uglies book and a 4th midnighters book about Jessica living for a long time being wrapped in the blue time nad eventually lives to Tally’s time and meets her and explains the Blue time and Tally was also born on the stroke of misnight and they explore the blue time together!?!?! and then since Jessica was in the blue time alone that long she is able to come out and explores the wild qith Tally?!?!?! and then somehow they find Zane and and then Jessica misses Jonathan and all the MIdighters come to where Tally and Jess are and then Tally and Zane and Jessica and Jonathan meet up and they all become frineds and Rex finds tons of lore in the wild and they need Dess because they find the darklings new hideout and Dess has to nake new weapons for them and Melissa they need because Dr. Cable is getting evil and making more specials and they are onto the new people appearing puit of nowhere (becayse in the magical new place Bixby is basically in between cities) and they need Melissa so they doin’t get caught by the specials and then they take down all the cities using the midnight hour to destroy all them by vandalizing and stuff and oh yeah i 4got to say that all of tally’s friends were mystically born on the stroke of midnight also and then everyone merges together like we are today and then it becomes total chaos and eveything starts all over agian with another rip in the secret hour and and Tally is also a flame-beinger and they k ill brb ive g2g eat dinner ill continue l8r

They can say whatever they want but I won’t change my mind. And if someone says they really like something, I’ll see if I like it, and if I do, great, if I don’t I’m not going to be pressured to listen to/read/do it.

    Didn’t people learn anything from Uglies? The normal/popular way isn’t the best. That is one of the many themes I got from the book (along with the whole governement conspiracy thing 😛 jk.)

    So, even though you said you would leave and go to a place where other people liked them, I really hope you read this. Because I don’t want you to leave. And I don’t think you should leave just because some people don’t agree with you on some things. I just think that’s wrong. If you did that all the time, you would live a very lonely life because NO ONE will always like the same things you do. And, not to be rude or anything, but just get over it.

    I went to the bookstore to get Pretties (I have Uglies, Specials, and Extras, I just need Pretties), but they didn’t have it (they waited until I was ready to buy it to not have it). So I bought the second Midnighters instead (I’ve only read the first one). I was going to just get all of them but they were the old covers, and I want the new ones. ‘Cause they’re so cool.
