Okay, I’m twelve days late, but I didn’t want to miss commemorating the 60th anniversary of the first publication of Uglies!

Here’s the novel in all its original glory, back in 1959.

    I kinda like the cover, but the new one is better. No offense intended!
    Also, I think that a hoverboard would be possible, although the bellyring wouldn’t work well, it would need the board to have a sort of internal sensor, creating too much weight. However, I think the specials board with the fans would work better. I’m gonna start thinking…. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Heeey anyway… that is a sweet cover scott-la (you know what? in spanish, la is feminine and el is masculine, so it seems like you should be scott-el…) I think your photoshop skills are pretty good, actually. I don’t have photoshop, but I love picnik.com.

    You know what? I kind of wish that I grew up in the 50s. They thought stuff like TVs were awesome technology, so it would feel like you were living in the future, if you know what I mean. I read this book once on people’s visions of the future from the 40s and 50s, and one said that they thought that everything would be made of plastic so that on cleaning day, you could just hose everything down, and it would drain out. I thought that was pretty cool.

    And to keep the random thoughts flowing, is anyone out here, like, really into track right now? we had a meet yesterday and I ran the 4×8, 800, and 4×4. I usually do high jump too, but I didn’t. Also, our best sprinter was hurt, and so I had to take her spot as the 4×1 anchor, because there were no sprinters who weren’t in 4 events already. I was so freaked out because I’m used to distance relay handoffs, but it went okay I guess. Not like anyone really cares about my track schedule, but you know, whatever….

I was flipping out for a moment, thinking that Scott Westerfeld was probably too young than to write a book, that the book was new when I read it, and that all good things really did have to happen before I was born. And now I’m just thinking that I wasn’t going any crazier than usual and that I’m GULL-I-BAL!

    Basically Amazon is stripping the sales rank of any books that contain sexual, GLBTQ, romantic, and adult content. This means that the books will not appear in Amazon searches when you do a search that might have one of their keywords.

    It isn’t contained to adult books and novels; YA authors are being hit too. So spread the link around and join in on the google-bombing! You can just follow the instructions and process that they explain. We might be able to get Amazon to stop this complete brain-missing policy.

  36. Ally-wa: Yes, Amazon has gone insane this weekend. Certain books are being deleted from the sales rank database for being “adult.”

    However . . . it’s not sexual content that makes a book “adult,” apparently. For example, the “Playboy Book of Centerfolds” still has a sales rank. That’s pretty adult, seems to me. And yet “Ellen Degeneres: a Biography” HAS had its sales rank removed. So that’s more “adult” than a Playboy photo book?

    In other words, Amazon isn’t limiting anyone’s access to sexual content, they’re just limiting access to books about gay people, by erasing them from their sales rank database.

    Hmm.

    Now, perhaps you’re wondering why a book losing its sales rank matters. Here’s how it works: Sales rank determines how soon you get listed when a search term is used. If you search on “ugly,” the Uglies Box Set pops up quickly, because it has a high sales rank. So if your book suddenly has NO sales rank, it’s much harder to find. Such books aren’t really invisible, but they’re sort of transparent.

    As I write this, there are rumors that Amazon is already starting to retreat from this insane policy, claiming it was a “glitch.” The web’s justice is fast and furious, I guess.

    If Amazon doesn’t come clean and fix this crap by tomorrow, there will be more words about it here (and many changed links to buy my books). In any case, it’ll be a while before I send them any money.

    You can see how weird this is, right? I mean, imagine if Amazon (or Google, or Facebook) just decided to erase you and everyone like you. Not happy-making.

  42. and scott-la im totally with u on that. think about it. its like being erysd like if u were never. there. i dont beleive its right to do that. its the readerz choice. doing that is not giveing the author its full credit! its like going up to some ones house and saying i dont like u so were wiping u from the face of the earth. wen im an author i dont want that to happen to my books. like at my school. they dont like twilight so they tried to act like it wanst real and if u brought it up u would get in trouble. i went alone with it till the “vote”. i dont know wat its called but ppl/adults picked books and then there were levals of age groups for serten books. teens would read at least 4 books then vote for there favorite. twilight was a nomine but in stead of letting stephenie get her credit they didnt let ppl read the book to vote. i was completely against it so i spoke up. i was almost sent to the princiblez office. it was as if they were saying stephenie wasnt a good author wen she’z my top tied wit u. ppl in my class saw i was rite and many didnt even vote. (know one really wanted to vote for anything but twilight) me and some friends tho went to a public libary to vote. i think every author and the books, that they have spent time to wright, deserve ppl to know, bye,and read and see there writing!

  45. Scott: Yeah, the biographies being removed made no sense to me until I figured out how all the people were related. It took John Barrowman’s biography getting removed for me to get it.

    I cancelled all my pre-orders that I have with Amazon… if this does get fixed I’ll probably place them again, but this really makes me angry. It’s like when LiveJournal and SixApart went around deleting peoples’ accounts based on their interests – interests all related to the gay community.

    Thanks for responding! It’s good that authors are noticing this.

    Would this be all books with LGBT characters? Because, with that heading, you’ve eliminated incredible books like “What Happened to Lani Garver,” “Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List,” and, branching out to the fantasy genre, “The Mortal Instruments” series (No more Alec/Magnus!!!), “Skinned”, and “A Great and Terrible Beauty”… which comprise at least 65%, if not more, of my bookshelf. Would they even go as far as to ban Harry Potter? Dumbledore’s gay, after all. Or would they stand back and say, “Oh, well, those books are top bestsellers, and as long as his gayness is just implied, we’ll let it slide to make more money”?

    This is entirely too far. If we ignore LGBT books, does that mean we can ignore LGBT people? One of my best friends, a boy, is the most talented artist, and fashion designer, I know – he’s going to be bigger than DKNY one day, mark my words – yet his family almost disowned him because he has a boyfriend. In what way is that morally right???

But now that it’s dealing with The Mortal Instruments, A Great and Terrible Beauty, and HARRY POTTER. WTF?!?!?!?!?! Those are some of my favorite books EVER. That’s so so so so soooooo stupid. Other people should be able to find awesome books like those and all the others being banned and read them at their own will. Amazon shouldn’t be able to censor people. (I was a little bit peeved, because it is an easy connection from calling a book “trash” to calling someone’s opinion of a book “trash,” like saying that their views are wrong/don’t matter because the book sucks anyway.)

I have no idea when I started commenting, or even when I strated reading this blog (which was a while before I started commenting). I used to comment as PeaceReaper, but then me and Orchid thought of this club thing that we haven’t done anything with, which is where our flower names came from.

Ok guys, it’s 10:41PM, so I’m going to try to start going to bed early… my doc emailed my mom (I had an app. sorta recently) and she said that the doc said quote “I cannot stress how important sleep and diet are”, so I’m going to work on that. Honestly, I’m going to REALLY try hard to start getting more sleep instead of wasting time like I am now for instance on the computer doing usless crap… oh, and Tally-wa7, I was 12 in… yeah, 7th grade… oh wow that’s actually when I first discovered the Uglies series! Lol I remember when back then I used to think that Uglies was a HUGE book… lol, that’s sooo funny! I’m almost 15 now, and a Freshman in High School… well, I’ll be 15 in July 28th…When I looked at it for the first time in forever, it was all small and stuff… now it’s like gotten bigger again… lol it’s like it keeps on changing sizes! I think it looked small cuz I was readin Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix then, and you all know how emensly HUGE!!!!!!!! that book is… but anyways, I’m going to hit the sack now so good night, ya’ll! I’m going to update my site in the next couple days, so watch for that… I’ll announce it here of course… bye!

  164. *Yawns* Still Tired. But finally I’ve got my power back. It’s been on and off all day cuz of crazy wind storms and everything…It’s totally sucked. That’s why I didn’t reply earlier Tally-wa7. Okay, so the we were all arguing about books we like and dislike, and me, Lizzy-wa, and Haley-sensei were just talking about it and we decided we should be able to speak our opinions in a…civilized way, without dissing the heck out of eachother and Lizzy-wa said it in a funny Medieval way and basically we just made it up that Scott-la was the king of Westertopia(? I think that’s the name we decided. I was opting for Westerfeldianiatopiataniaofawesomenessania or something like that, but it was too long. ๐Ÿ™‚ ) and we just chose random things we’d like to be. I’m like the ninja faery princess of awesomeness on ice(lol) and Haley-Senei’s the head ninja and Lizzy-wa is the Royal Advisor. And All kinds of other stuff. Alex-wa’s partly in charge of it too, they’re making a website for it and everything but I’m not sure when it’ll all be finished. It’s just us being random and stupid and having fun and all. Just say whatever you want your title to be, it can be whatever you want!

  165. Oh, I was 12 at the end of 7th grade and beginning of 8th. I have a late birthday…But now I’m in 9th and am 14. I can’t believe the school year’s almost over, it’s gone by so quickly! So far, freshman year’s been pretty shweet. Can’t wait till I’m a sophomore.

My baby sister, ( who isnt a baby, looks like shes twenty and acts likes shes 25), read them last year and didnt tell me about it!!! So i wasnt happy when i had to find out randomly on my own.   168. hwy i’m a freshman tooo ! but i failed a grade ( b/c of hearing difficulties i swear!) so i’m 15 in 9th gade and i found Uglies wayyyy back in 2007 like 7th grade

    and the glitch thing was just wrong, wrong i tell you – how could they do that it’s just uneverythinggood and i thought people who provided books were nice, guess i was wrong ๐Ÿ™

    and wow a nice dibate over twilight and harry potter
    welll i have read both and give a nonbias opinon on both
    for me, Hp lacks in hte grab-you-in factor like i never really got fully draggged into it by the story but that miight just be me but i can honastly say that the plot is amazing
    twilight was my first love, the first reall book outside school i read ( i did read as a child but mostly goosebumps) so the story really pulled me in. Though i know the plot isn’t good AND the last book is just rubish. So in the end, i Hp towers over twilight with an iron fist

    oh and i wasn’t fooled for a second scott is only like 40 impossible for Uglies to be that old and i knew that it came out in like 03

    anybody on here has read a great and terrible beauty, way better than twilight imo

    oh and scott i can’t wait that logn for liviathan ๐Ÿ™ when do we get to see the cover ?

  169. Yep, I read A Great and Terrible Beauty! I think the series gets better as it goes along though. I thought the first was a bit on the boring side, but I liked Rebel Angels better and loved The Sweet Far Thing.

  183. Twitter is this website where people have followers and the just post whatever they are thinking and it lets other people know on their pages. It tells you how many people are following you like Ashton Kucher is going for a million people. I thought it was like Face rank because face rack tells you how popular you are… go to cnn.com they have a whole story running about it

    I ABSOLOUTELY LOVE THE UGLIES SERIES…i can never help but wonder if anyone else really GETS the series as much as i do, or if they’re just taking it in lightly. I guess I’lll never really know for sure…
